Chapter 22 p2: Logic
At dawn, the wind had been strong last night. In the middle of the night, Song Changxu had woken up from the cold, closed the window, and continued to sleep. When he got up early, it was pouring rain.
He washed up and went to the kitchen. Song Mingyan hadn’t prepared the Bobo Chicken business today. It was difficult without a place to shelter from such a strong wind and rain.
After breakfast, Song Changxu said, “Elder Brother, don’t be too strict. When you can earn, earn some pocket money. If you can’t, then it’s fate.”
Song Mingyan agreed.
Song Changxu went to Lingshui Village, walking through the mud. His shoes and the hem of his long robe were soaked. He saw the rushing river. Fortunately, the water level was not high, and he could cross by stepping on the stones.
The rain continued to fall, pattering on the umbrella, as if it were hailing.
A gust of wind blew, making it even colder.
Song Changxu’s shoes were covered in mud. He held the umbrella and with difficulty, shifted his book box to his front to shield it with the umbrella.
The rain was falling straight down, mixed with a fine drizzle that slanted into his face and onto his long robe.
When he reached Scholar Li’s courtyard, he was already drenched in sweat. Although it was raining, it was unusually stuffy. Plus, he had quickened his pace, so he had inevitably sweated.
Seeing him, Scholar Li quickly called him in.
“You child, you didn’t have to come in such a heavy rain.”
In the past, when the original owner was studying, there had also been times of heavy rain. He would be lazy and not come, thinking that one day more or less made no difference. But Song Changxu was not that kind of person.
The teacher’s wife brought him some ginger tea. Song Changxu was quite embarrassed. Feng Xin’ou had also arrived. His house was close to Lingshui Village, so he hadn’t suffered much, but he still looked disheveled.
The two of them looked at each other, both wearing Scholar Li’s old long robes, holding ginger tea and huddled on the short wooden stools. For some reason, they suddenly burst out laughing.
The two disciples suddenly burst out laughing.
Scholar Li: “…”
The teacher’s wife found Scholar Li’s old shoes and stood at the door, beckoning him over. “Why are your two disciples suddenly laughing? I thought they were both usually so calm. Why are they acting so wild today?”
Scholar Li smiled. “Let them laugh if they want to, and cry if they want to. That’s what it means to be young.”
Ten of the fifteen disciples had come. Scholar Li gave them a lecture in the main hall.
In the afternoon, the rain stopped, and a rainbow appeared in the sky. He wore his teacher’s robe back. Because Scholar Li was not as tall as him, the robe was a bit short, revealing his trousers.
Song Changxu crossed the river and returned home. He changed his clothes and washed Scholar Li’s robe and shoes, and then washed his own from this morning.
He looked up. The breeze blew, and the distant mountain forest looked as if it had been washed clean, lush and green.
“Zhizhou, let’s go cut some grass,” Sun Luzhen’s voice sounded from outside the door.
Xu Zhizhou answered. In the afternoon, the ground was not completely dry. Going up the mountain to cut grass would get his shoes and clothes dirty, so he wore his own linen clothes. He wouldn’t feel bad even if they got dirty.
At the entrance of the Song family’s house, Song Changxu first saw Sun Luzhen, and then he saw a burlap sack carrying a basket walk past.
Song Changxu was speechless.
Xu Zhizhou bent down to cut grass in the mountains. The weather was cool, but the grass was slippery with dewdrops, so it took a long time to fill the basket. After cutting the grass, he went back to his room for dinner.
When Xu Zhizhou had just left home, he was only thinking about cutting grass. Now that he was done, he noticed that Sun Luzhen was wearing a new hair ribbon.
“This yellow hair ribbon looks very good on you,” Xu Zhizhou said.
The two were close friends. Sun Luzhen lowered his voice. “Bai Yuan gave me this hair ribbon.”
Xu Zhizhou said, “You should still be careful of him.”
Sun Luzhen nodded and kept his words in mind.
Xu Zhizhou parted ways with his friend and returned to his room. His elder brother had already made dinner, and they ate together.
He suddenly thought that he and Song Changxu had been engaged for so long, but he had never given him anything. He had only bought things when he had asked for them.
He’s so thoughtless.
Xu Zhizhou was sullen. Before he was engaged to Song Changxu, the men in the village would still try to curry favor with him. Now that he was engaged, Song Changxu was so infuriating.
Xie Huaichuan also bought snacks and jewelry for his elder brother. The more Xu Zhizhou thought about it, the angrier he got, and he went to bed in a huff.
After the rain, the night was cool, and everyone in the village slept soundly.
After this rain, the weather grew hotter and hotter. The dogs in the village didn’t like to go out and move around anymore. They would lie in the main hall with their tongues out, only going out to drink water. Xu Cheng, who was usually playful, also stayed in his room this weather, guarding the mint tea.
Liang Su had gone to help Song Mingyan sell Bobo Chicken a few times, and they had earned a lot of copper coins. Seeing them make money, someone in town had also started to sell it. Their meat skewers were four copper coins, and five vegetable skewers were six.
One stall was set up, and their business had not yet cooled down. More and more stalls popped up like mushrooms after a rain, and they lowered the prices of their vegetable and meat skewers. Their business became much slower.
The weather was hot, and the ingredients couldn’t be kept for too long, so Song Mingyan made less. Song Ye sold some vegetables and winter melons in his basket a few times.
In the summer, winter melons were expensive. A small, fresh winter melon could sell for five copper coins, and a slightly larger one could sell for seven or eight.
After picking them from the fields, they would wash the mud off their vegetables and melons and carry them to town to sell. It took a little more effort and time, but it made their produce sell better, which was a worthwhile trade-off for them.
Song Mingyan made less Bobo Chicken. After selling out, he went home and first divided the money. When Song Changxu came back, he told him about the situation in town and asked for his advice.
“It’s normal for people to imitate. The seasoning we use is easy to imitate, but it’s impossible to get the taste just right. However, they can still get it seventy or eighty percent right.”
Song Mingyan nodded. For example, Auntie Li’s family in the village would make tofu and sell it to the villagers. Some people in the village had also learned to make it and had earned money.
“Elder Brother, how much can we earn now?” Song Changxu hadn’t planned to do this business for too long. He wanted to earn money for the exam. In his opinion, to have a long-term business, one needed to have a unique skill or technique.
Song Mingyan said a number.
“Then we can still sell it. In another month, they still won’t have figured out the entire recipe. They’ll only be able to make a similar taste. If the business doesn’t meet expectations then, we can sell the recipe.”
Song Mingyan nodded. “I’ll listen to you.”
With Song Changxu’s words, Song Mingyan’s brow relaxed. He watered the mint and then cleaned the main hall.
Xu Cheng had a small hoe. He had followed behind Song Ye and weeded a few times with his small hoe, feeling very proud.
“Uncle, look what Grandpa bought for me,” Xu Cheng showed off to Song Changxu.
Song Changxu held the small hoe. It could be used to turn the soil and plant vegetables.
“It’s very good.”
Hearing his uncle’s words, Xu Cheng was even more proud.
Song Changxu grabbed Xu Cheng and went up the mountain to pick fruits together. The uncle and nephew took a basket to fill. After filling the basket, Xu Cheng picked a few wildflowers and put them in the basket as decoration.
What child doesn’t like pretty things?
“It’s Xia Ya, Uncle. I’m going to talk to her for a bit,” Xu Cheng said after getting Song Changxu’s permission, and ran off.
A moment later, Xu Cheng came back, with a few less wild fruits in his basket.
He sighed and said, “Xia Ya’s sister came back to her parents’ house. It was fine before. She said her brother-in-law would buy things for Xia’s sister before they were even married.”
Song Changxu’s heart stirred. “Children shouldn’t think about these things.”
Xu Cheng held the basket and said, “Father said that my other father would often send him food and other things before they got married, but they still got divorced.”
Song Changxu gave him a tap on the back of his head. “I’m running first. If you can’t catch me, I’ll drink all the mint tea.”
Xu Cheng came back to his senses. “My legs are so short. How can I catch up with you, Uncle!”
He ran home, washed the fruits, and gave them to the people cooling off in the courtyard. Song Changxu was going to take a bath tonight.
There was no bathroom in the house. A separate five-square-meter mud house had been built specifically for bathing.
At night, Song Changxu carried two buckets of water. He opened the window on the side of the mud house, and by the moonlight, he took off his clothes. His body was well-proportioned and slender, his waist firm and powerful, with a jade-like luster. He scooped water with a ladle and poured it over his body, then washed himself with a cloth.
He wrung out his clothes, squeezing out the water, and hung them up in the courtyard. Back in his room, the wedding quilt and wedding pillows were put in the wardrobe. There was an extra dressing table. In the future, another person’s everything would also be in this room.
They would live together for a long time. Song Changxu suddenly turned over, pulled out a brick, and felt the purse he had placed there. His heart settled a lot.
In a few days, Scholar Li would have a holiday.
During the holiday, Song Changxu and Song Mingyan went to sell Bobo Chicken together. With Song Changxu there, it sold even faster than usual. They earned a total of two hundred copper coins.
Song Changxu: “Elder Brother, I’m going to buy some things to take back.”
“Go on.”
He went to the shop on East Street and bought cloud-flake cakes, water chestnut cakes, and a portion of peach blossom slices, which looked very pretty. He spent a total of fifty copper coins.
He put them in his basket, bought meat, pastries, and yellow wine for his family, and went back. He glanced at the jewelry shop, thought for a moment, and then lowered his eyes.
Back at home, Song Changxu made an excuse and went out. A hot wind blew, and a patch of Song Changxu’s back was wet.
It’s fine. I’m just doing this for the good of our two families, so there won’t be any conflicts for people to laugh at. Do I really want to give these? Of course not.
Song Changxu had convinced himself.
At this hour, the villagers had eaten lunch and were taking a nap in their rooms. Song Changxu saw the eaves of the house hidden by the elm tree and knocked on the door.
Xu Zhizhou had just fed the chickens and ducks. He put down the feed and went to open the door.
When Xu Zhizhou saw Song Changxu, he pulled him into the house.
Song Changxu’s hand trembled, and he said nervously, “I, I…”
Xu Zhizhou: “Don’t worry, they’re all taking a nap. What do you want with me?”
He felt a bit strange. Why had Song Changxu suddenly come to see him?
Song Changxu said, “I went to town today and bought some pastries for you.”
He stuffed the oil-paper package into his hand. Meeting Xu Zhizhou’s wide eyes, Song Changxu paused.
