Chapter 50: The Human-Shaped Cataclysm Defuser (Part 3)
The driver who hadn’t been looking at the road was slapped awake by Yu Zhao. He didn’t say anything, but obediently took them to their destination and even refunded the extra charge to Yu Lin on the platform.
Yu Lin looked at the refunded amount on his phone, paused for a few seconds, and silently closed his phone.
The company was in a shop at the entrance of the community, and there was a door underneath that led directly to it. Jiangcheng was particularly quiet today. There were not many people on the road, and even many shops were closed.
The entire city was shrouded in yellow sand and strong winds.
Yu Lin turned his head and looked at the trees on both sides of the road that were swaying in the wind. The weather was unusually bad, and it was about to get dark.
He opened the weather forecast and belatedly discovered the warning of a super heavy rain.
It was not a suitable day to go out.
“…We’ll rest at the company for a while. It might rain.” He looked at Yu Zhao and pressed his lips together lightly. “I didn’t see the reminder. I’m a bit slow with these things.”
He was used to living on his own, and he could do whatever he wanted. He wouldn’t pay attention.
Yu Zhao lowered his eyes to look at him, and without saying yes or no, he just asked, “Wife, you don’t like the rain?”
“Not really.” Yu Lin thought for a moment, and his eyelashes lifted slightly. “It’s just that the rain is too heavy, and it’s not convenient for us to go home.” He looked at the gloomy sky.
“I know. Then it won’t rain.” Yu Zhao smiled, stood by his side and looked at the sky, his eyes curving slightly.
There were not many people in the company, only the director was there as usual. He took the manuscript, picked out a few mistakes, and took the opportunity to scold Yu Lin.
Yu Lin calmly pointed out that there were no mistakes in the places he had questioned. He was choked for a moment, and after careful identification, he fell silent.
Yu Zhao was sitting in the lounge. Hearing the sound, his eyes kept looking in this direction.
After he came out, he immediately walked up and asked, “Wife, who was that person just now?”
Yu Lin turned his head. “Who? The director. My leader.”
“Leader? Is he very important?” Yu Zhao pressed his lips together, looking unhappy.
His face was grim, and his expression was exactly the same as before he had hit the driver.
Yu Lin looked at him, and remembering the way he had hit the driver, he raised his hand and ruffled his hair, and comforted him, “En, if I don’t have a job, I’ll have to go out and pick up trash to support you.”
Yu Lin was relieved after he had handed in the manuscript, and he was in the mood to joke. He raised his hand, ruffled the fluffy hair that Yu Zhao had lowered his head to let him touch, and said softly, “Don’t worry. I’m fine.”
The sky had cleared up at some point, and it hadn’t rained. The dark sky had returned to normal, and there were scattered pedestrians on the road.
The color of the evening sunset was beautiful. In the twilight, the tree shadows on the side of the road were clean.
Yu Lin was carrying his bag and was walking forward in the beautiful orange sunset. Yu Zhao was following him slowly, his lips pressed lightly together. He looked back, and a hint of unwillingness flashed across his face.
***
The super heavy rain never came in the end. The next day, the weather was sunny, as if yesterday’s heavy rain warning had never existed.
Yu Lin didn’t care about these things. When he got up in the morning, he boiled two cups of milk and heated up two rice balls.
Seeing that he was busy, Yu Zhao wiped the table clean on his own, and then came over to get the food. Yu Lin handed him the plate and took a moment to look at the constantly jumping messages in the group chat.
Only then did he know that the director had been driving home last night and had suddenly slipped by the river and had fallen into the water. Not to mention that the car was wrecked, he had drunk a bellyful of water. He had taken leave to rest during this time and had no energy to scold people.
The group chat was chattering, discussing how this low-probability event had happened.
The world where only the director was injured had been achieved.
He had just handed in the manuscript, so Yu Lin had some time. He played games in the morning, and at noon, a courier called. Thinking that he hadn’t prepared lunch yet, he asked Yu Zhao to wait at home and planned to go out and buy lunch on the way.
“Can’t I go?” Yu Zhao had been watching since he had pushed the door open, and then he had followed him and had squatted at the door, his fingers lightly hooking the corner of Yu Lin’s clothes.
Yu Lin thought of the half-episode of Teletubbies he had left and shook his head in refusal. He ruthlessly pushed the face that was pressed against his palm.
Just as he was finding it funny, he found that he had mischievously lowered his head, and his long eyelashes were blinking in his palm, which was a little itchy.
“Okay.” Yu Lin’s fingers curled slightly, and he pushed his cheek. “Go and watch TV.”
Yu Zhao was aggrieved. “Oh.”
The courier was a box of new pens, and Yu Lin had to go to the courier station to sign for it.
He lived in the innermost part of the community, and it was not a smooth road. He had to take a detour to get to the entrance of the community.
The courier station was on the east side, and there were many people standing inside. Yu Lin waited for a while, and after he went in to get the courier, he suddenly found that the air around him had become cold.
He wasn’t wearing a jacket. He subconsciously touched his cold wrist and realized that the temperature was dropping. He planned to go to the restaurant next door to pack two meals.
But just as he stepped out of the door, and before he could put down the door curtain, he found that the originally sunny sky had become gloomy, and the rain that had not come all night had suddenly fallen.
A light rain, from far to near, fell continuously from the sky, like a dynamic curtain, blurry, from small to large, and soon it became a string.
Yu Lin was holding the courier and was looking into the distance in the rain. He suddenly found that the rain was very strange, and the world had become unclear.
It was as if a layer of a virtual filter had been added. The tall buildings had become blurry colors, and the leaves were like green color blocks.
Yu Lin was not holding an umbrella. He blinked lightly, thinking that his eyes were playing tricks on him.
He stood under the eaves for a while and found that it was not the case. The rain was continuous, and it was falling very fast and very bizarrely. In just a short while, the water had already reached his calves.
There were still a few pedestrians at the entrance of the community. Seeing this, they hurried up the steps. At first, it was just the sound of hurried footsteps, but gradually, the footsteps turned into screams.
Yu Lin heard their terrified cries, was stunned for a moment, and when he went down the steps, he found that the world had become abstract. The clear figures had become blurry, as if they were constantly sliding down a spiral slide, and they could never reach the end.
His gaze fell, and he only saw a series of terrified, fast-running, blurry shadows.
He seemed to have accidentally entered some kind of bizarre world. The vivid people seemed to have been added with a layer of a shadow effect, and their bodies were infinitely stretched, blurred, and virtualized, and finally, they melted into the endless rain.
It’s too far. Yu Lin belatedly thought. A young man with a schoolbag, his stamina seemed to be very good, and he was running very fast. He was pushing forward with all his might, and the tip of his shoe had stepped on the steps. He opened his eyes wide and reached out to Yu Lin on the steps.
However, his long and slender bones seemed to have stretched into a layer of a water film, and ripples appeared in the air.
Yu Lin felt a wave of dizziness.
Although he was a firm materialist, and although he did not think that all of this should have happened, Yu Lin also felt that his hands and feet were cold.
He pressed his lips together, and tried his best to keep his emotions from panicking, and unconsciously looked for a connection with this world.
“Hello, wife?” In a blurry mist of water, Yu Lin dialed the phone and heard Yu Zhao’s clear and low voice on the other end, as cheerful as ever.
His voice was a little distorted through the network cable, and it could also be that he was a little far away.
He didn’t know what had happened, and was just muttering on the other end, “Wife, when are you coming back? You didn’t bring a jacket. Shall I go out and pick you up?”
It had been almost ten minutes since Yu Lin had left him. Yu Zhao was leaning against the coat rack, his expression anxious.
Yu Lin listened to his oblivious voice, was silent for a moment, and his heart softened a little again.
Yu Zhao thought he had agreed, and with a smile, he took down his jacket and was about to go out.
Then he heard Yu Lin’s pale voice on the other end of the phone, “Yu Zhao, my bank card is in the drawer in the lower left corner of the study. You have to pay for food. You can’t just hit people anymore. You’ll be taken away. Don’t forget.”
Yu Zhao was stunned for a moment, and when he understood his meaning, his hands and feet turned cold.
He paused at the door, blinked lightly, and his eyes turned red. “Wife, you don’t want me anymore?”
Then he heard a light, and almost shattering, voice, “No. It’s that I might be about to die.”
***
The rain in the vicinity of the community was drizzling, as if it would never stop. The strange weather had attracted the attention of some people.
“It’s a small-scale cataclysm.”
A man with a cold expression was in a uniform, holding a communicator in his hand, and he dialed a special number. “108 Cangwu Road, a primary small-scale cataclysm, water-based. Requesting support.”
The changes in the world were not only known to a few people.
Ever since all kinds of supernatural phenomena had suddenly occurred in various places, and a group of super-powered people had appeared, the relevant departments had been acting in secret.
After research, due to multiple destructions and reconstructions, the world’s structure had become extremely unstable. The most dangerous cataclysm, codenamed “White Bird,” had not made a move, but besides him, all kinds of small-scale cataclysms that had been born in various places were causing frequent trouble.
These small-scale cataclysms were not as destructive as White Bird, but they were numerous and very tricky. They were currently simply divided into three levels: primary, intermediate, and advanced.
The rain in the Cangwu Road community was a primary small-scale cataclysm in action. A primary cataclysm had a simple mind, and its destructive power was concentrated in a small area. It would generally lure people in and kill them.
It was not difficult to eliminate, but because it was concentrated at the entrance of the community, too many ordinary people had accidentally entered.
What was even more tricky was that outside the range of this small-scale cataclysm, a member of the special action team, Lin Ming, had also sensed the auras of several cataclysms waiting for an opportunity, and at least one of them was intermediate.
If this group of cataclysms were to be connected, Jiangcheng would be in big trouble this time.
Lin Ming held the communicator and briefly reported the situation. He drove his car to the side of the road, took his equipment, and in a continuous and strange light rain, he slowly walked into the water curtain.
No matter what, he had to go and save the people first.
***
Perhaps a day had passed, or perhaps only a minute or so. There was no time in the rain curtain, only the drizzling sound of rain, and the sky was gradually getting dark.
The original space was soaked by the rain, and it was strange and blurry. Yu Lin walked forward along the mottled color blocks, trying his best to go to a place with a clearer color.
The surroundings were empty, and the water film had isolated the distance between people. Yu Lin didn’t know where the others were trapped.
Along the way, there was only the dripping sound of water, and it wound forward. An unknown amount of time passed, and he heard a clear sound of a dog barking.
The barking of the dog was very clear in the quiet night. Yu Lin paused for a moment, and he looked up. Under the mottled tree, he saw a dim yellow light flickering, and under the light, a few blurry shadows were squatting.
The temperature was very low, and those shadows were all human-shaped, but the part of their faces was empty.
They heard the movement, looked up, and met Yu Lin’s gaze.
Yu Lin’s gaze overlapped with theirs, and his mind went blank for a moment, and his fingers were completely cold.
He stopped, and did not move forward. In the drizzling rain and a desolate expanse, he confronted these few shadows.
A chill rose from his back, and it was uncontrollable. The monsters slowly stood up. Yu Lin stared at them, his lips pressed tightly together, and his face was pale.
“Don’t just stand there. Come here!” A short reminder came from the side. Yu Lin was stunned for a moment, and before he could react, he subconsciously followed the sound.
The direction from which the sound came was a flowerbed. In a blurry color block, and he didn’t know what had interfered with it, the outline of the flowerbed was actually very clear.
Yu Lin walked over, and then he felt a chill on his skin, and he had stepped into another space.
The space was not large, only the size of a room, and the decoration was simple. A few people were squatting inside.
Yu Lin recognized that two of them were the ones who had gotten a courier with him, and another was a young man with well-developed motor skills, who had almost stepped on the steps with his bag. At this moment, they were all listless, and their faces were as if their worldview had collapsed.
A man in a uniform was standing in front of them, holding a weapon in his hand. His steady brow was slightly furrowed. He looked at Yu Lin and asked with uncertainty, “A human? Or an evolved cataclysm?”
Yu Lin was a little dazed. “What?”
Lin Ming looked at his clueless look, and his brow was tightly furrowed. He was also confused, and he looked at the alarm in his hand with a frown.
The alarm, which had been developed by the action team for evolved cataclysms, was used to identify humans and monsters.
He had entered this space formed by a cataclysm, and with the alarm, he had quickly found a few scattered humans and had protected them. Logically speaking, there should not have been anyone else outside the space.
But just now, the alarm had sounded again, and there was a human aura.
Then why hadn’t it been identified before?
He looked at the silent Yu Lin with confusion and vigilance.
He didn’t know that in the external space, a human-shaped cataclysm with a terrifying aura was rampaging in the community and was striding forward.
He was walking in a mottled color block that was constantly twisting because of the terrifying aura. His face was grim, and wherever he went, the cataclysms would make way.
He did not sense a familiar aura, and he was bumping around like a headless fly, his expression anxious and dangerous.
“Did you see him? Or did you see him? He’s hiding… why is he hiding? Did you scare him? Or did you scare him?” Yu Zhao’s expression was blank, and his excessively beautiful features showed a bizarre feeling.
He slowly walked past the small-scale cataclysms that were lowering their heads in silence, and he became more and more silent.
