Chapter 9: Meow p1
The Cat God continued to reveal the rest of the content: “The wish is: to apply hand cream to the left hand of Chen Xiaoyuan, where the cat scratch is.”
“Chen Xiaoyuan is Captain Chen, the police officer who took your Papa away just now.”
Jing Mimi was a little surprised to hear this. He looked down at the fragrant hand cream clutched in his hand and couldn’t help but worry about Papa.
He didn’t know what kind of person the tuxedo cat’s wish target was, and whether he would bully Papa like the tuxedo cat bullied him.
…
Jing Zhi and Captain Chen moved to an unoccupied room.
Captain Chen was a man in his forties or fifties, with a naturally dignified and imposing face. After closing the door, he got straight to the point: “The DNA results are out. You have no blood relation to him, and there is no match in the DNA database for anyone related to him.”
It was a somewhat surprising, yet not entirely unexpected answer.
Jing Zhi’s lips moved. Since he didn’t know the other party’s background, he answered conservatively: “I don’t know why he calls me Papa either. It’s really my first time seeing him.”
He couldn’t tell the police about Mimi; the police wouldn’t believe it, and they might even think he was deliberately changing the subject to cover up something, making things worse.
So he could only skip the point about Mimi and return to the case of the lost child itself. He was just a kind-hearted passerby, nothing more.
Captain Chen: “Recently, a gang involved in child trafficking and even suspected organ trafficking has been committing crimes across borders and has extended to City A. I am investigating. We rescued some children, but some members of the gang escaped, and the whereabouts and fate of some children are unknown.”
Jing Zhi was stunned, but quickly understood—they suspected the little cub was related to this trafficking case and also suspected him.
He didn’t expect to be involved in such a big case…
Jing Zhi immediately said, “I can fully cooperate with the investigation.”
Seeing his neither humble nor arrogant attitude, Captain Chen was quite satisfied. “We need to go to your house to take a look.”
Because Jing Zhi said he found the little cub at his doorstep, but the nearby undamaged surveillance cameras didn’t capture his figure. Putting aside the coincidence that the little guy managed to avoid the cameras, if Jing Zhi lied, then the little guy might have been hidden in Jing Zhi’s home all along—it had to be investigated and confirmed.
Jing Zhi nodded and told him the password to the door lock. Suddenly thinking of something, he took out his phone and said, “I also have a surveillance camera at home. I can send the footage to you if needed, but it’s been turned off for the last two days. The previous recordings are still there.”
“Why was it suddenly turned off?”
“Because the cat my ex-boyfriend and I raised together passed away two days ago. We broke up, and I’m planning to move out recently.”
Jing Zhi knew another coincidence had piled up, but he had nothing to hide. Besides, he didn’t want to clear his name so quickly; he wanted to maintain contact with the little guy.
Captain Chen nodded noncommittally and asked him a few more questions. He then asked his subordinate to accompany Jing Zhi to the nurse’s station to change the finished IV bag and copy the surveillance footage from his home, while he turned and went back to the ward alone.
Jing Mimi was clutching the hand cream, staring blankly at the door.
Because of that mission, he was increasingly worried about Papa’s situation, afraid Papa would be bullied.
Just when he couldn’t sit still any longer, a figure walked in from outside the door. His amber eyes lit up instantly, but upon seeing who it was, the light in his eyes dimmed a few degrees.
It wasn’t Papa.
The care worker called out to him: “Captain Chen.”
The other police officers also looked in his direction in unison.
Captain Chen asked, “How is it?”
Several police officers shook their heads and said dejectedly, “He ignores us.”
No matter what they said, the little cub just kept looking at the door and ignored them.
There was even a specialist in child psychology among them, but she had talked until her mouth was dry, yet was still treated as air and ignored.
Even the cat she raised at home wasn’t this aloof; it would at least pay attention to her occasionally when she took out a cat treat.
If only cat treats worked on this little cub, she would be willing to contribute all the cat treats in her house.
Captain Chen walked straight to the bedside, and a police officer stood up to offer him the stool.
Jing Mimi finally stopped staring at the door. His gaze fell on the tuxedo cat’s wish target, and under the gaze of many pairs of eyes, he suddenly spoke: “Where is Papa?”
His voice was small and soft, carrying undisguised worry, as if afraid they were monsters who would eat his Papa.
Several police officers who had been given the cold shoulder for a long time all exclaimed “WTF” in their hearts. He finally spoke.
Only the care worker was relatively calm; she had gradually gotten used to it.
Captain Chen glanced at the care worker, then looked at the little cub and said, “Mr. Jing went to find the nurse to change the IV bag. I’ll ask Auntie Care Worker to fetch him back. How about Uncle chats with you first?”
The care worker stood up very tactfully. “I’ll go get Mr. Jing right now.”
Jing Mimi’s suspended heart finally settled. He nodded his little head. After being taken care of for so long, he trusted the care worker auntie relatively more.
Jing Zhi had successfully copied the home surveillance video for the police and was pushing the IV stand back. The wheels of the stand were a bit rusty and deformed, making it hard to push. He had to use his foot to control the direction while pushing, creating a creaking sound.
From a distance, he saw a familiar figure walking towards him.
It was the care worker.
“Captain Chen asked me to come pick you up. He’s talking to the little guy.”
Jing Zhi nodded and asked tentatively, “That Captain Chen… what’s his background?”
The care worker said, “He’s a great hero here. He solved several trafficking cases.”
“Have you heard of the Golden Apple Case? That was the first case he solved back then.”
…
Captain Chen had actually already investigated Jing Zhi’s background clearly, including his “ex-boyfriend” and the deceased kitten.
He was a local of City A, his parents were divorced, and he was raised by his mother. He ranked first in the city in the college entrance examination for mathematics and attended the prestigious University A. Now he was a very popular game streamer on the Cat Tail platform with a stable income, no criminal record, and participated in some animal welfare causes.
A while ago, he participated in some offline gaming events, and many videos of his appearances could be found online. There was no helping it; streamers with education, skills, and good looks always attracted extra attention.
During this period, he had been streaming steadily, only posting a leave notice on the platform when his kitten fell ill and passed away.
Honestly, he felt Jing Zhi had little connection to this case.
Including this little cub—currently, it couldn’t be 100% confirmed that he was a child lost in the trafficking case.
They had shown his photo to the children rescued so far, but the children said the traffickers often blindfolded them to prevent them from seeing things they shouldn’t. They couldn’t fully recognize the faces of all the other trafficked children.
The criminal gang was smart and had more than one hideout, which was why they hadn’t been able to rescue all the children yet.
But doubts had to be investigated; better to investigate wrongly than to let a criminal go.
Seeing the care worker leave, Captain Chen coughed lightly, preparing to continue extracting information from the little cub. Suddenly, a small hand held his left hand.
The small hand was fair and soft, making his hand look even darker and rougher in contrast.
Because of the dry winter, and being a rough man who rarely paid attention to skincare, the skin on the back of his hand was peeling a bit and felt rough to the touch.
Being held by such a small hand, his gaze couldn’t help but soften a few degrees.
He had interacted with many children and liked being with these innocent souls. He liked holding their small hands; it felt like passing on hope, wishing they could all grow up safe and healthy.
That was why, over the years, he had been cracking down on and solving trafficking cases, promoting awareness, and supporting related public welfare to ensure their safety as much as possible.
The small hand held his, suddenly opening his palm to reveal a shallow scar inside. A finger probed and touched it gently.
The movement was very light, slightly ticklish.
“This was scratched by a kitten,” Captain Chen murmured in explanation.
Jing Mimi looked up curiously with his little head.
Was it that tuxedo cat?
Seeing his interest, Captain Chen felt he had found an entry point to get closer to him and asked, “Do you want to hear the story of the kitten?”
Children were indeed more likely to be interested in small animals.
Hearing from the couple in the ward earlier, the little guy was mimicking cat meows with their daughter yesterday, so he probably liked kittens.
Jing Mimi nodded quickly.
Captain Chen spoke slowly: “It was a kitten Uncle raised at the police station a long time ago.”
Back then, Captain Chen wasn’t Captain Chen yet; he was Little Chen.
After graduating from the police academy, he had been diligently following his master to handle cases, a reckless young man.
He found the kitten outside the police station on his way to work one day.
It was a tuxedo cat with distinctive markings.
It didn’t look fierce, but when he reached out to touch it, it quickly extended its claws and scratched him. Caught off guard, he bled immediately, grimacing in pain.
The scar on his palm was left just like that.
After that, every time he saw that cat, he would take a detour.
Not long after, he suddenly noticed that the cat was getting thinner and thinner, but its belly was getting bigger and bigger. He realized it must be pregnant.
Some cats become clingy and try to please humans when they are pregnant, hoping humans will care for them and their babies. But this cat was particularly “unperceptive” and extremely wary.
Seeing it so pitifully thin, he decided to be the bigger person and not hold a grudge against a small cat, so he bought some food for it.
After feeding it for a while, it seemed to become familiar with him. He could pet it without getting scratched, but he couldn’t touch its belly, where its precious babies were.
Those days coincided with the rainy season. It was damp and wet outside. Being pregnant, getting caught in the rain and blown by the cold wind at night was torture for the cat. So he and his colleagues got together, made a nest for it in the station, took it to the pet hospital for a checkup, and bought some supplements.
His master even teased him back then, asking if he was here to serve the people or to raise cats.
He grinned and said: Tuxedo cats are the prototype of the Black Cat Sheriff; it matches our police station perfectly.
He even named the tuxedo cat “Sheriff.”
The smart kitten quickly got used to its new name.
Sheriff was not only good at scratching him but also caught quite a few mice secretly causing trouble in the police station.
During that time, he would occasionally find dead mice at his workstation.
Anyway, it could be considered a meritorious service to the police station.
They say tuxedo cats have a “psycho” attribute. Because Sheriff was carrying babies, it was forced to restrain itself a lot, but one could still faintly see signs of its “psycho” tendencies.
Although it occasionally went crazy and made noise, it was also quite cute.
