Chapter 4: Dog-Blood High Society
Following the system’s instructions, Gu Xiu returned to the house he lived in, an old villa left to him by his parents.
However, he wasn’t the only one living there. There was a butler and a maid to take care of his daily needs, as well as his older cousin, Gu Chun, who had been sent by his grandfather to keep him company.
【The original owner’s rebelliousness and willfulness are mainly due to his empty head, coupled with the intense emptiness in his heart after losing his family…】 007 explained. 【Even though Gu Chun lives off him, he doesn’t care. After all, a mansion with only one person is just too lonely.】
Gu Xiu: 【Humans are insatiably greedy. What Gu Chun wants is more than just free food and lodging.】
In the story’s setting, only the original owner’s father was the child of his grandfather’s legal wife; the other sons were all born to mistresses. Gu Xiu’s paternal grandmother was Lu Shichen’s grandaunt. After her death, Gu Xiu was the only one in the Gu family with any ties to the Lu family.
After his true parentage was exposed, the original owner was cast out of the Gu family by his grandfather. This was largely due to the instigation of his relatives in the Gu family, among whom Gu Chun’s family, who had long coveted his father’s inheritance, played a major role.
Gu Chun crossed his legs and lifted his eyelids, assuming the air of a master. He spoke to Gu Xiu at the door in an annoyed tone, “Where have you been messing around again? How many times have I told you, those guys are just after your money, treating you like an ATM and a sucker. None of them are your real friends…”
He seemed to have a sharp tongue but a soft heart.
Unfortunately, he had run into a tough nut. The one thing Gu Xiu hated most in his life was being told what to do. The daddy-type Lu Shichen was annoying enough; this kind of ill-intentioned, foul-mouthed person just made him want to rush up and land a few punches.
For the sake of his persona.
Gu Xiu pursed his lips, held back, changed his shoes, and took off his jacket, replying nonchalantly, “I went out to eat with Ninth Uncle.”
Gu Chun’s expression changed instantly. “What?”
Seeing the slovenly, golden-haired figure about to saunter past him, Gu Chun shot up from the sofa and hurried after him to ask, “Don’t you hate him the most? He’s not even thirty, but he acts all high and mighty because of his seniority, always bossing you around…”
“Yeah, it’s so annoying,” Gu Xiu said, letting out a lazy yawn.
So blessed yet so unaware, always reaping what he hasn’t sown.
It’s infuriating.
Watching his nonchalant back recede, Gu Chun gritted his teeth in hatred.
On the way back to his bedroom, 007 continued to fill Gu Xiu in on the novel’s detailed settings: 【These people in the Gu family are all descendants of your grandfather and his mistresses. The Lu family are relatives from your grandmother’s side…】
However, since the original owner was a child swapped by a nanny, he had no blood ties to either the Gu family or Lu Shichen. On the contrary, this in-law relationship had made him enemies on all sides, and he was ultimately abandoned by both the Gu and Lu families. Although he had enjoyed a life of luxury that wasn’t rightfully his, it was still a disaster he hadn’t brought upon himself.
Even within high society, there were different tiers. Just Lu Shichen, the current head of the Lu family, was worth more than all of Gu Xiu’s relatives in the Gu family combined.
The Gu family was both jealous of Gu Xiu and needed to rely on him to curry favor with Lu Shichen. Their attitude towards him wasn’t exactly bad, but Gu Xiu, whose parents had died young, felt no sense of belonging there.
Only when he was messing around with his degenerate friends did he feel like he himself was getting attention and being valued.
Even if those people had ulterior motives, they were far less greedy than his own relatives.
Gu Xiu easily understood the underlying logic of the original owner’s actions. He didn’t feel much sympathy, but he couldn’t help but let out a soft sigh.
He first found some makeup remover wipes and scrubbed roughly, removing the panda eyes from his face. Then he washed his face three times with clean water, finally rediscovering his own features.
The thin skin clung tightly to his three-dimensional bone structure. His monolids were clean and fresh. Only when he had just woken up in the morning or was tired might a shallow, narrow crease appear.
After patting his face dry with a towel, his grape-like black eyes became even more moist and bright. Gu Xiu then ruffled his golden bangs, which were wet and stuck together in strands. Still not quite used to his new hairstyle and color, he tied his bangs up into a small ponytail.
Much better.
After a shower, he slept soundly under a soft goose-down quilt in a king-sized bed. It wasn’t until the next afternoon that 007 popped out to announce the end of his vacation.
007: 【Jiujiu, you have to go through the second plot point tonight. This one is very important, so don’t mess it up…】
Tonight, Gu Xiu needed to return to the original owner’s old habits and hang out with his degenerate friends at a KTV.
Jiang Yuan Yao was bedridden with his injury. He had waited bitterly for several days, but Gu Xiu never came to visit. Heartbroken and disappointed, he had only just started to feel better tonight and accepted a friend’s invitation to a gathering to relax.
But Jiang Yuan Yao’s heart wasn’t in the party. He called Gu Xiu again during the gathering, and Gu Xiu lied, claiming he was being held at the company to work overtime by his Ninth Uncle. Just as Jiang Yuan Yao was feeling dejected, he would run into Gu Xiu, who claimed to be busy with work, at the KTV.
To be honest, Gu Xiu hadn’t done anything that outrageous. After all, a scum gong could be bad, but he couldn’t be low-class, or else why bother with a crematorium? He might as well be directly cremated. But in the eyes of Jiang Yuan Yao, who didn’t have a God’s-eye view, it was a different matter entirely.
Gu Xiu, drunk and staggering, would leave the private room to go to the bathroom. Coincidentally, he would bump into a beautiful woman in the narrow corridor. Because he was unsteady on his feet, he would accidentally kabedon her.
Jiang Yuan Yao would happen to pass by and witness this ambiguous scene between his sugar daddy and the beautiful woman. His eyes would instantly turn red, and he would leave with a broken heart.
Gu Xiu had just finished digesting this part of the plot and was now getting ready to leave.
【…Tsk.】
【Jiujiu, don’t be so picky.】 The small silver ball of light that was 007 hovered above his head, acting as a light for his makeup mirror, chirping away. 【Your makeup skills are terrible! Can you hurry up? What if you’re late and miss the plot point!】
Gu Xiu’s hand slipped, and the eyeliner drew a long, upward-slanting line, instantly transforming him into a demonic cult leader from a historical drama.
Whatever, as long as it looks bad, Gu Xiu couldn’t be bothered to fix it. He threw down the eyeliner pencil in a fit of pique. 【I think that’s about right.】
【…】
007’s silence was deafening.
It wasn’t until Gu Xiu was about to leave that it remembered to remind him: 【Jiujiu, quick, take down the little pigtail on your head!】
“…”
Gu Xiu untied the small rubber band holding his bangs with one hand and strode downstairs. Gu Chun, downstairs, happened to glance at him and choked on his own saliva, coughing uncontrollably. He was still coughing when Gu Xiu pushed the door open to leave, and didn’t even have time to ask where he was going.
Gu Xiu walked out onto the street as if no one else was there, his chin held high with confidence: 【Looks like my first time doing makeup turned out pretty well.】
007: 【…】 No comment.
Inside the KTV private room, the air was thick with smoke and foul.
The surprises that the host from Qidian brought to 007 came one after another.
The host, who seemed so arrogant and self-important, who had weathered all sorts of storms, was actually… a lightweight when it came to drinking.
Of course, you couldn’t tell from his appearance. Gu Xiu had put on makeup again, and the foundation perfectly concealed the faint flush on his face.
His distinct black and white eyes were tinged with drunkenness, transforming from clear mirrors to shimmering pools of water, rippling with light. He looked even more handsome than usual, so much so that one could temporarily ignore his sloppy eyeliner.
Therefore, at the beginning of the plot’s derailment, 007 didn’t pay much mind to it, not until the deed was done and it was too late to turn back…
Gu Xiu put on a fake smile to deal with the group of fawning fair-weather friends. The hot liquor flowed down his throat and through his lungs, stirring a warmth in his lower abdomen. The timing was about right. Besides following the plot, he really did need to go to the bathroom.
In the post-apocalyptic world, alcohol was one of the most precious resources. Gu Xiu had never played a protagonist, so he rarely got to enjoy it. As for the fantasy worlds teeming with demons, alcohol was a major hindrance, so he naturally didn’t touch a drop.
Now, after a few more drinks, he felt fine, except that the diuretic effect of the alcohol was excessively strong.
He eagerly pushed the door open and walked into the long corridor with unsteady steps.
There was no one else in sight. The halo of light from the ceiling lamps fell on his eyes, which were framed by grayish-black eyeshadow. They were misty and watery, and the corners of his eyes were also tinged with a faint red.
The floor was covered with a soft, sound-absorbing red carpet, but the heavy thud of his footsteps was still clearly audible, and his breathing was heavy and ragged.
007 couldn’t help but worry: 【Jiujiu, are you okay? Are you drunk?】
Gu Xiu replied without thinking: 【No.】
007: 【…】 You had the exact same tone when you denied being ill-mannered last time!
More pressing than debating whether Gu Xiu was drunk, the pair now faced a more immediate problem.
Namely, where was the random beautiful woman who was supposed to make the protagonist shou jealous?
This wasn’t a plot point Gu Xiu could resolve on his own.
007 was useless, but it offered some emotional support, better than nothing: 【Jiujiu, just head towards the bathroom. There are so many private rooms along the way, someone is bound to come out. When you see someone, just rush up and stage an accident!!】
It sounded incredibly unreliable.
007 was noisy and annoying, but Gu Xiu was unusually quiet, and his movements gradually became more stumbling and clumsy.
The host’s acting is amazing, exactly like the description in the novel! 007 was full of admiration.
【Jiujiu, someone’s coming up ahead! Charge!】 007 promptly provided a course of action for its groggy host. It didn’t know what it saw, but it suddenly choked and changed its tune in terror. 【You… no, wait! Don’t go up there! Don’t—】
Unfortunately, Gu Xiu was only two or three steps away from the person around the corner. It was too late to avoid them.
Not to mention that the current Gu Xiu was completely incapable of dodging. His vision was a blur; he couldn’t even tell men from women, let alone people from animals.
He only saw a dark shadow, a long and tall one.
The moment 007 recognized the person, his gaze also fell on the stumbling Gu Xiu, a hint of surprise in his ashen-gray eyes.
Seeing this, Lu Shichen quickly put the glasses he was wiping back on the bridge of his nose. Through the lenses, he could confirm that the drunkard heading towards him was indeed that good-for-nothing nephew who caused trouble all day long.
Lu Shichen’s brow furrowed slightly, but before he could speak.
Gu Xiu’s strangely made-up face scrunched up. He couldn’t see the person clearly, but he still remembered his job of following the plot. To prevent this tool-person who had delivered himself to his door from running away, he rushed forward in a few large steps.
007 shrieked: 【Jiujiu!!!】
Gu Xiu didn’t hear what 007 was chirping about. His footing was unsteady. He was only supposed to kabedon the person, but he accidentally stumbled into their arms. To keep his balance and not fall, he subconsciously hugged the innocent passerby tightly.
The latter seemed to be startled by him as well and simultaneously reached out, wrapping an arm around his lower back.
Their two bodies were pressed tightly together, like magnetic poles attracting and clinging to each other.
Any passerby who saw them would think their relationship was intimate, far beyond that of friends.
Even though they were both men.
The text message he had just sent to Gu Xiu had once again sunk like a stone in the sea. Jiang Yuan Yao’s face was full of misery. He was planning to go to the bathroom to wash his face, but unexpectedly, not far away was the cold-blooded and heartless man who wouldn’t answer his calls or reply to his messages.
And he was hugging another tall, handsome man.
