Chapter 3: The Spoiled Villain in a Period Novel 3
Xu Nongqing picked up the shoes Shu He claimed he had dirtied.
He stood up and looked at Shu He. The boy seemed to be sleeping restlessly, his eyelashes fluttering. His pale cheek was pressed against the soft quilt, making him look harmless and pitiful.
Not hateful at all.
After another moment, Xu Nongqing took the shoes and went outside. The rain had stopped. Butler Fang was talking with a few bodyguards and greeted him when he saw him.
“What are you…?” Butler Fang noticed what was in Xu Nongqing’s hands.
Xu Nongqing lowered his dark eyes. “Washing them.”
“There’s no need to wash them,” Butler Fang said in surprise. “The young master brought many new pairs. This pair can just be thrown away.”
Xu Nongqing said nothing.
The rain had just stopped, and the early autumn air was cool and damp.
Wang Family Village was nestled in the mountains, surrounded on all sides. Looking up, one could see a thick, wet mist. Xu Nongqing’s figure quickly disappeared into the white fog.
Butler Fang shook his head, puzzled. “I really don’t understand what he’s thinking.”
Butler Fang was a little worried that Xu Nongqing would hold a grudge against his young master.
After all, from the moment they arrived on the mountain, he had been made to push the wheelchair, give up his house, and read stories to lull him to sleep… all of it was just tormenting Xu Nongqing.
Although he didn’t quite understand what his young master had against Xu Nongqing—
That wasn’t important.
What was important was to keep a close eye on Xu Nongqing and not let him find any opportunity to trouble the young master.
It really would be more convenient to move to another village. He would have to whisper in the young master’s ear more often and persuade him to leave early.
A bodyguard standing guard at the door guessed, “Is he after our young master’s money?”
That reason was logical, and Butler Fang had thought of it too.
But he was a good judge of character, and Mr. Xu didn’t seem like that kind of person.
When he had given Xu Nongqing the rent money, Xu Nongqing hadn’t even taken the full amount, only what he was owed.
Butler Fang shook his head and sighed. “I’ll stay a few more days. When I’m gone, it’ll just be you guys. Remember to protect the young master well.”
The bodyguards replied, “Yes, sir!”

When Shu He woke up, his mind was still a little fuzzy.
He sat up dazedly in bed. The sky had grown dim, the sun was setting, and everything was quiet except for the sound of raindrops falling. The world seemed to have been tucked away into a narrow corner.
Where am I again…?
System: 【I’m sending you the Villain Performance Guide. Take a look now while you have the chance. You’ll probably have another confrontation with the protagonist soon.】
Right, he was bound to a villain system.
He had to be a stepping stone and complete missions.
Shu He’s little mood quickly dissipated. He pursed his lips, lowered his head, and mumbled, “Alright, let’s see it.”
As soon as he said it, a book slowly floated down in front of him.
He caught it.
“I thought it would just appear in my mind.”
Shu He eagerly opened the book. The table of contents alone was over thirty pages long.
Those thirty pages filled him with supreme confidence.
He read it carefully, nodding seriously from time to time. A small dimple appeared on his pale cheek; he already had a plan in mind.
*
When it was time for dinner, Wang Xingguo came over to invite Shu He and the others to eat.
He eagerly announced that he had slaughtered a chicken, a fish, and a pig. His wife had cooked, and it was delicious. The young master would surely love it!
Butler Fang regretfully informed him, “Thank you for your kindness, but our young master needs to eat light food recently. He’s supposed to avoid heavy meats.”
Wang Xingguo: “…”
His chicken! His pig!
Those were things he only allowed himself to eat during the New Year.
Wang Xingguo’s heart bled, but he didn’t dare show any dissatisfaction on his face. He forced a smile. “Alright, the young master’s health is most important. By the way, my son Wang Zhi doesn’t have much to do usually. If the young master wants to go out and have some fun, he can ask him. We don’t have much in Wang Family Village, but we have plenty of mountains and water. The scenery is quite nice.”
“Mm,” Butler Fang didn’t brush off the kind offer.
After Wang Xingguo left, he turned around and saw Shu He standing by the door of the woodshed.
He was wearing a new pair of white sneakers, which were now standing on the dusty, ash-covered ground. Inside the woodshed, Xu Nongqing was expressionlessly feeding wood into the stove.
Originally, a bodyguard was supposed to cook the nutritious meal that Shu He could eat.
But Shu He refused.
He insisted that Xu Nongqing do it, his attitude so firm that it put Butler Fang in a difficult position. Fortunately, Xu Nongqing said nothing and simply took the vegetables they brought and went into the woodshed.
Smoke drifted upwards, and the fire in the stove flickered.
At the doorway, Shu He watched and watched, but he couldn’t tell if Xu Nongqing was secretly holding a grudge against him.
He pressed his soft lips together, then took two steps forward to Xu Nongqing’s side, his slender white fingers gripping the corner of his shirt.
The fabric weighed down.
Xu Nongqing turned around.
He was tall and slender. Shu He felt he must be at least 1.9 meters tall; he had to tilt his head up slightly to look at him, which didn’t feel very villainous at all.
With a blink of his almond eyes, Shu He let go of his shirt and placed his hand on Xu Nongqing’s hair.
This time, there was finally a noticeable change in Xu Nongqing’s expression.
His dark eyes deepened. He moved his lips, looking at Shu He silently.
He didn’t make a sound, but he was clearly asking, “What are you doing?”
“Be shorter.” Shu He frowned, then said haughtily, “No one has ever made me look up at them.”
His bad temper was on full display.
He wouldn’t even allow someone to be taller than him—so malicious and domineering.
Xu Nongqing curled his fingers and looked away without a word, simply moving a low stool to Shu He’s feet.
He didn’t speak, but Shu He understood instantly.
Shu He quickly stepped onto it, and in an instant, he was as tall as Xu Nongqing. He tilted his head slightly and smiled triumphantly, his round almond eyes peeking out from under the fine black hair on his forehead, as bright and nimble as a little cat’s.
“Xu Nongqing, are you very scared of me?”
Otherwise, why doesn’t he resist?
Why doesn’t he curse at me?
Or glare at me?
He must be scared.
Shu He hadn’t expected his performance to be so good. Seeing Xu Nongqing just looking at him without speaking, he felt incredibly confident. He even leaned in closer, placing a hand on Xu Nongqing’s shoulder to keep from falling.
“I won’t do anything to you.”
Shu He said, “As long as you listen to me and serve me well while I’m here, I’ll give you benefits.”
After a thought, he added, “I’ll give you money, and you can go to the city.”
Go to the city, have his Dragon King counterattack, and with a single command, I’ll have to go live in a doghouse—
No, I can’t live in a doghouse.
Shu He’s almond eyes widened slightly. Just as he was about to add a threat, Xu Nongqing’s large, warm palm suddenly lifted and pressed down on the wrist of the hand resting on his shoulder.
Shu He stared blankly at Xu Nongqing. The man’s dark eyes reflected his own pale face, so deep that no emotion could be discerned. He only heard his somewhat detached voice echo in the woodshed—
“How do you want me to serve you?”
The words were completely unexpected.
Shu He’s brain stalled for a second. He unconsciously tilted his head, looking at Xu Nongqing in confusion.
Xu Nongqing held Shu He’s wrist, slowly pulling his hand down from his shoulder. Shu He lost his balance and was about to fall against him.
He quickly wrapped his arms around Xu Nongqing’s neck. Xu Nongqing’s fingers loosened again, his hand hovering in mid-air as Shu He’s lunge forced him to take half a step back.
Shu He was displeased.
He turned his head, and his dark hair brushed against Xu Nongqing’s neck. He wasn’t sure if it was his imagination, but he felt the man’s breathing grow a little heavier.
“What are you doing?” Shu He paid it no mind, only blaming him for pulling his hand just now. He lifted his face slightly to glare at Xu Nongqing. “You’re already resisting me right after I said that? People who resist me never have good endings. With just a single command from me…”
He reached out and, feigning viciousness, pressed his hand against Xu Nongqing’s neck. “You’ll be gone.”
As he spoke, he was standing on his tiptoes.
His entire body was pressed against Xu Nongqing’s.
Xu Nongqing lowered his gaze, not looking at Shu He. His Adam’s apple bobbed slightly. The hand on his neck was a little cold, and he turned his head to avoid it.
“The shoes are washed.”
Shu He’s hand went limp.
“Why did you wash the shoes?”
Xu Nongqing’s voice was low and indifferent. “Didn’t you say I got them dirty?”
For a rare moment, Shu He didn’t know how to respond.
Yes… that’s the excuse I used to pick a fight, but isn’t Xu Nongqing himself perfectly aware?
He didn’t get my shoes dirty.
So why did he wash them?
Shu He thought it over and concluded that the protagonist was showing weakness.
He was probably genuinely scared, so he showed weakness by washing the shoes, hoping Shu He would stop targeting him.
Thinking this, Shu He released his grip, a little soft-hearted and guilty as he took half a step back.
He had to be a bad guy for so much longer. What was he going to do?
Lost in his own thoughts, Shu He didn’t notice the shockingly dark look in Xu Nongqing’s eyes as he watched him.
—
After dinner, Shu He prepared to take a bath.
No household in Wang Family Village had a water heater; everyone had to heat water with firewood, which was very troublesome. He had to wait for over half an hour for hot water.
But then a new problem arose.
The bathing area was very dark, with no light. There was a spiderweb in the corner of the ceiling, with a black spider entangled in it.
There was no door either, just a piece of cloth serving as a curtain. Shu He stared blankly at the scene. He had thought he could tolerate these conditions, but now he was on the verge of a breakdown.
Shu He raised a hand to wipe his eyes.
Tears welled up. He sniffled, his nose turning red. He didn’t dare to undress or bathe. He stood there alone for a long time before finally calling out in a soft, hoarse voice, “Xu Nongqing—”
A moment later, footsteps stopped in front of the cloth curtain.
Shu He lowered his head and saw the shadow of a person cast below. He reached out to lift the curtain, wanting Xu Nongqing to come in and keep him company. However, just as his hand grasped the curtain, his movement was blocked.
Through the cloth, Xu Nongqing’s voice was as detached as ever. “Aren’t you bathing?”
“Let go.” Shu He tugged at the curtain, not understanding why he was holding it down.
“You come in and keep me company. Don’t ask so many questions.”
The little villain wouldn’t admit he was scared.
Xu Nongqing quietly watched the curtain flutter as it was pulled, his grip still steady. “Afraid of the dark?”
“Afraid of ghosts.” Shu He puffed out his cheeks in anger and kicked at Xu Nongqing’s pant leg from underneath. “Let go. Come in. Stand in the corner and keep me company.”
Xu Nongqing: “You’re bathing.”
“We’re both guys, what are you afraid of?” Shu He didn’t believe Xu Nongqing cared about that; he just thought Xu Nongqing didn’t want to help him.
“It’s not like I can take advantage of you. Hurry up and come in. You said you’d serve me, so you have to listen to me.”
Such words were truly full of ambiguity.
But Shu He was completely unaware.
He was still urging him. Xu Nongqing stood before the curtain, his dark eyes lowered, lost in thought. Finally, he lifted his hand, pulled back the curtain, and moved towards Shu He.
