Chapter 49
One day, Liang Xusheng’s nose started itching, and he began sneezing frequently.
At first, neither he nor Lu Xun paid much attention to it. Lu Xun suggested he see a doctor, but Liang Xusheng didn’t take it seriously. After a few days, both of their mothers noticed and urged him to go. It turned out he was allergic to pollen.
Lu Xun, upon learning this, immediately got rid of all the flowers in the house. Liang Xusheng was a bit sad; he had gotten used to having fresh flowers at home.
“My desk looks so empty now,” he said to Lu Xun. “Aren’t you going to buy me flowers after work anymore? I got used to it.”
Lu Xun thought for a moment. “I can still do that.” He bought a bunch of artificial flowers for the house and a few to take home every day.
“Okay,” Liang Xusheng said, not minding the artificial flowers. It was the thought that counted. Besides, artificial flowers wouldn’t wilt, making it less of a hassle.
One day, while playing Rewind, Liang Xusheng received an official message. He thought it was a reward for a bug fix, but when he opened it, a 3D bouquet appeared on the screen. He realized it was Lu Xun. He took a screenshot and sent it to Lu Xun: [Impressive, Mr. Lu.]
Lu Xun: [Do you like it?]
Liang Xusheng, feigning indifference: [It’s okay.] He posted the screenshot on WeChat Moments with the caption: [A gift from my husband. (Smug emoji)]
For Liang Xusheng’s birthday, Lu Xun bought him a G-Wagon. Liang Xusheng, initially confident, turned out to be a terrible driver. He would be honked at every ten meters, nearly sideswiping other cars, or causing traffic jams with his sudden braking.
The G-Wagon was so well-insulated that he couldn’t hear the honking, blissfully unaware of the chaos he was causing.
Fu Shu and Liang Jing, after a terrifying ride with their son, demanded that Lu Xun take the car away and forbid Liang Xusheng from ever touching a car again.
“What did you do?” Lu Xun asked Liang Xusheng over the phone.
“I just pressed the gas and brake a bit too hard,” Liang Xusheng said sheepishly.
Lu Xun decided to test-drive the G-Wagon himself. Liang Xusheng, full of bravado, said, “I’m driving!” He stomped on the gas pedal, and Lu Xun was thrown back against the seat. Then, as they drove onto the road, Lu Xun’s heart raced. Liang Xusheng, oblivious, was happily chatting and changing lanes without signaling, causing other cars to honk angrily.
Lu Xun decided to take the car back and buy Liang Xusheng a new one: a small electric scooter.
“You’ll be safe with this,” Lu Xun said.
Liang Xusheng, wearing his helmet, sped off, leaving a trail of dust behind him. Lu Xun shook his head. He took the scooter keys away from Liang Xusheng. “Don’t touch any vehicles,” he said firmly.
“Not even a bicycle or a mountain bike?” Liang Xusheng asked.
Lu Xun, Fu Shu, and Liang Jing: “No!!!”
Since Liang Xusheng wasn’t working, Lu Xun decided to give him some “side hustles.” Lu Xun opened a gaming company for Liang Xusheng, which included selling merchandise related to Rewind and his new game. He also created an online store where Liang Xusheng could sell merchandise he made with his friends, using private links for his fan groups.
One day, a friend asked: [Feather-sensei, can you make a acrylic keychain with you and Lu Xun on it?]
Liang Xusheng: ?
[Feather-sensei, do you have abs? Can you make a mousepad with your abs?]
Liang Xusheng: ?
[Feather-sensei, can you write a book about you and Lu Xun? I’m sure a lot of people would buy it.]
Liang Xusheng: ?
[Feather-sensei, can you sell…]
Liang Xusheng: “…”
Rewind‘s new game was a hit, attracting attention from all corners of the gaming world. Liang Xusheng, who had been traveling, missed the beta test and only started playing after the official release. He became completely addicted.
Lulu messaged him: [You were traveling. How were you playing the game?]
Liang Xusheng, feeling sheepish, didn’t reply. He and Lu Xun had been too busy to even touch their phones. He was too focused on other things.
Games are no match for…, he thought.
Liang Xusheng started working at his father’s company, earlier than expected. He had decided it was time to stop playing and take on more responsibility. He was assigned as his father’s assistant, starting from the bottom, doing simple tasks like making tea, filing documents, and running errands.
While Fu Shu and Yang Yue disapproved, thinking it beneath him, Liang Xusheng took it in stride. He even enjoyed goofing off with his colleagues during breaks.
He’d message Lu Xun: [I’m slacking off!] [Nothing to do!] [Living the life. (Smug emoji)]
Lu Xun: [Are you adjusting okay?]
Liang Xusheng: [It’s great. I fed the fish in my dad’s office. (Smiling emoji)] [Fed them too much. (Crying emoji)]
Lu Xun: “…”
Lu Xun: [It’s okay, I’ll take care of it.]
Liang Xusheng: [I’ll have to pay for those fish, won’t I?]
Lu Xun: [How much of your salary is left?]
Liang Xusheng: [I owe a few thousand. I got a discount. (Laughing emoji)]
Lu Xun: “…”
Chapter 50
Liang Jing had put Liang Xusheng in the office, starting him as an assistant, thinking he wouldn’t take it seriously. He was surprised to find that his son was not only competent but also punctual, hardworking, and well-liked by his colleagues.
One day, while Liang Jing was in a meeting, a business partner, Mr. Chen, came to his office. His assistant wasn’t there yet, and none of the staff recognized Mr. Chen. But Liang Xusheng, recognizing him, greeted him warmly. “Mr. Chen, please come in and wait. My dad should be done soon.”
When Liang Jing arrived, he was surprised to find Mr. Chen sitting in his office, chatting with his son.
Liang Jing realized that Liang Xusheng wasn’t as useless as he had thought. It was time for him to gain some independence.
Lu Xun was annoyed that Liang Xusheng was working overtime. He wanted to have dinner with him, but Liang Xusheng was still at the office at 10 pm.
Lu Xun, scrolling through WeChat, saw that Liang Jing and Lu Zhang were chatting about fishing. He messaged them: [Are you two done for the day?]
Liang Jing: [Yes, it’s past 10.]
Lu Xun: [Xusheng is still working. I’m waiting for him. (Smiling emoji)]
Liang Jing and Lu Zhang: “…” They immediately stopped talking about fishing.
Lu Zhang messaged Liang Jing privately: [Did you make him work overtime?!]
Liang Jing: I have no idea!
Liang Xusheng had been assigned to a project team and was now in charge of bidding documents. He was working late nights, and Lu Xun was worried about him. He wanted to remove the burden from his shoulders, even for a bit.
Lu Xun noticed that Liang Xusheng had changed. He wasn’t wearing his usual hoodies; he was wearing tailored pants that hugged his long legs, and white shirts that emphasized his shoulders. He looked confident and capable.
One day, Lu Xun went to visit him at the office and saw Liang Xusheng, wearing his white shirt and work badge, striding confidently through the office building. As he spotted Lu Xun, his eyebrows lifted and a smile flashed across his face. Lu Xun was smitten.
That night, after their usual intimate session, Lu Xun held Liang Xusheng close. “You’re working too hard,” he said.
Liang Xusheng snuggled against him. “I’m fine.”
Lu Xun then took the initiative to tell him: “I’ve been thinking about your words.”
“What words?” Liang Xusheng asked, confused.
“About wanting to be independent from your family. You’re working hard to carve your own path now.”
Liang Xusheng smiled, touched. He looked at Lu Xun, his eyes full of affection. “I’ll work hard for our future.”
Lu Xun was speechless. He’s so good.
Six months later, Lu Xun was starting to feel overwhelmed. Liang Xusheng was working tirelessly, completely engrossed in his career.
[Wifey, are you free this weekend?]
Liang Xusheng: [Nope.]
[Wifey, want to have dinner together?]
Liang Xusheng: [Busy.]
[Wifey…]
Liang Xusheng ignored his messages, completely focused on work.
Lu Xun: “…”
When he saw Liang Xusheng eagerly sharing work stories, Lu Xun would listen patiently, filled with pride. He realized his initial worries about Liang Xusheng working were unfounded. He was thriving.
He had to adjust his own schedule to accommodate Liang Xusheng’s new routine.
One day, while thinking about Liang Xusheng, he realized he hadn’t bought him a gift in a while. He had been too caught up with work.
He went to his favorite jewelry store. He picked out a watch and sent a picture to Liang Xusheng.
Liang Xusheng, busy with work, replied: [Looks good.]
Lu Xun sighed. It wasn’t a response he wanted. He bought the watch anyway.
That evening, while having dinner, Lu Xun carefully put the watch on Liang Xusheng’s wrist.
Liang Xusheng looked at the watch, his eyes wide. He recognized the brand and knew it was expensive. He looked at Lu Xun, surprised.
“I wanted to buy you something with my own money,” he explained, a sheepish grin on his face. “You always buy me stuff. Now I can finally pay you back.” He added, “How is it? Pretty cool, right? Made by your hardworking husband.”
Lu Xun, touched, was speechless. He had never seen Liang Xusheng so proud and determined.
“Thank you,” Lu Xun finally said softly, his voice full of sincerity. “I really like it.” He leaned in and whispered, “I love you.”
Liang Xusheng looked at him, his eyes shining, and returned the sentiment: “I love you too.”
