Gu Yuan frowned, a flicker of anger instantly hardening his stern little face. “You’re the one who’d come in dead last.”
“Kittens can eat two chicken legs!” Zhou Chiyu chewed on a meatball as he retorted. “If you were my kitten, I’d fatten you up all white and plump.”
“Childish!”
“Ridiculous!”
“Why would I be your cat?”
It had been a long time since Gu Yuan had argued with anyone like this. The faint pink on his cheek resembled a ripe tomato, as if he might explode in anger any second.
He thought Zhou Chiyu always said the strangest things. Utterly unreasonable.
He picked up a chicken leg and angrily shoved it into his mouth, chewing furiously.
A look of surprise immediately appeared on Doctor Auntie’s face.
What was going on?
Seeing Gu Yuan’s eating speed clearly pick up, Zhou Chiyu across from him was instantly fired up with competitive spirit.
He rolled up his sleeves and gnawed on a chicken wing like mad, his bright black eyes sneaking peeks at Gu Yuan as he secretly competed.
Gu Yuan just found Zhou Chiyu amusing and didn’t bother with him or take the bait. He sat there proudly, and before he knew it, he had eaten three chicken legs.
That evening, the Gu Cheng couple heard about the lunchtime antics when they got home from work. Bai Wenran’s eyes lit up with delight. When she saw the brand-new scooter by Gu Yuan’s side, she said warmly, “Did Little Fish give this to you?”
Gu Yuan was reading a book. He turned his head slightly and fell silent, clearly unwilling to talk about it.
Gu Cheng laughed. “That scooter’s really nice. Little Yuan, when you have time, you can go out and play with Little Fish.”
“I’m not going out with him.” Gu Yuan clenched his little fists around the book. “I hate him!”
Bai Wenran paused, then slowly showed a disappointed expression. But Gu Cheng thought Gu Yuan was all talk—if he really hated Zhou Chiyu, that Electric Scooter wouldn’t be there.
“Is he really going to live in our house?”
“He’s so annoying!”
Even until bedtime that night, Gu Yuan kept voicing his complaints about Zhou Chiyu.
Bai Wenran held Gu Yuan close, her heart a mix of emotions.
Ever since Gu Yuan had learned about his condition, his personality had grown more and more withdrawn, and he often refused to express his true feelings.
The psychologist had said Gu Yuan’s test results weren’t good. If this continued, it wouldn’t just torment his body—his mental health issues would worsen too.
It had been a long time since Gu Yuan had vented his emotions so fiercely.
At least it was better than bottling it up.
The next day was the weekend.
Early in the morning, Zhou Chiyu rode over on his scooter to invite Gu Yuan out to play.
“Brother, want to go fly a kite?” Zhou Chiyu excitedly pointed outside the window, the little curls on top of his head bobbing and swaying with his bouncy steps. “Dad and I once won first place in a kite-flying contest! I’m super good at it!”
Gu Yuan had just changed clothes. According to his schedule, it was time for his walk.
But when he saw Zhou Chiyu’s figure, his little brows furrowed instantly, and he burrowed into the covers in rejection, saying nothing.
“Brother, are you sleepy?”
Zhou Chiyu looked up at Bai Wenran. “Auntie, can Brother come fly kites with me?”
Bai Wenran nodded. “Of course, if he wants to.”
Zhou Chiyu called out to Gu Yuan a few times with no response from under the tightly wrapped blanket, so he rode off on his scooter.
Bai Wenran saw Gu Yuan quietly peek out from under the covers and probed, “Shall we go find Little Fish?”
Though the doctor recommended daily walks for Gu Yuan, he disliked going out. Even after the Gu Cheng couple’s efforts, he had only agreed to go out three fixed times a week.
“I don’t want to go today.”
Gu Yuan took off his outer clothes and sat at his desk. “I want to read.”
Bai Wenran hesitated to speak. “But you already promised Mommy that you would—”
Gu Yuan slumped over the desk and gently closed his eyes.
After some time, Zhou Chiyu’s clear, cheerful laughter rang out from the courtyard. Gu Yuan covered his ears and rested his forehead on the cool desk surface, coughing softly.
The courtyard didn’t seem to have just Zhou Chiyu—there was also Grandpa and the household staff. Grandpa really liked Zhou Chiyu and kept playing with him. From the faint sounds of fun drifting up from downstairs, they were probably playing hide-and-seek.
He was puzzled why everyone kept praising how cute Zhou Chiyu was.
In his eyes, this little fatty was so annoying.
“Little Yuan, look at that.”
Bai Wenran seemed to have spotted something interesting and quickly reminded him. “Look, there’s writing on Little Fish’s kite.”
“Writing?” Gu Yuan was curious but didn’t want to show it too obviously. “He knows how to write?”
Even he only recognized two thousand Chinese characters.
“Little Yuan, just take a peek.”
Bai Wenran covered her mouth and smiled softly. “The words on it have to do with you, oh.”
Gu Yuan reluctantly lifted his gaze. When he saw the line of text on the panda kite, his light brown pupils widened slightly.
[I hope Brother Gu Yuan can get second to last place in the eating contest.]
Gu Yuan wrinkled his nose, his little fist clenched hard.
