At nine o’clock in the evening, in the administrative office of North-South High School.
The middle-aged man had been lecturing for over half an hour, spittle flying everywhere.
The other truants had all been led back to their homeroom teachers’ offices for discipline, but He Siheng and Tan Jing, who had been caught red-handed fighting, “enjoyed” Director Yan’s exclusive one-on-two furious tirade.
“You’ve got some nerve—skipping class and fighting! Is this punishment not enough for you?”
Director Yan paced back and forth in the office in a rage, then stopped in front of Tan Jing, his tone softening slightly. “Tan Jing, you first. How did you end up at the internet cafe too? Did He Siheng force you to go?”
He Siheng interjected speechlessly. “He’s an adult. Did I tie him up and drag him there?”
Director Yan snapped at him. “You shut your mouth first!”
Tan Jing had always been the model student representative. Ever since taking office as Student Council President, he had been diligent and responsible, earning great prestige among the students. Director Yan believed there must be a reasonable explanation for his presence there.
However, the boy he had high hopes for gave a completely opposite answer.
“He’s not wrong,” Tan Jing said flatly. “No one forced me. I just suddenly felt like skipping class.”
Hearing this from a model student made Director Yan’s vision go black with anger. “Is this your rebellion phase hitting late or what?”
Tan Jing stood ramrod straight, neither humble nor arrogant. “I’m sorry. I didn’t set a good example for the students. I’m willing to accept punishment and resign from the Student Council.”
Director Yan nearly choked on his breath. He hadn’t even announced the punishment yet, and this kid had already sentenced himself. Was he determined to fall all the way down?
“And what about the fighting?” He turned to He Siheng, who was slouching beside him.
He Siheng muttered with his hands behind his back. “We didn’t even fight.”
Director Yan retorted, “If I hadn’t arrived in time, are you saying you wouldn’t have laid hands on him?”
He Siheng faltered, then mumbled softly, “I’d at most scare him. Actually hitting him would be domestic violence…”
He muttered the last part unclearly, and Director Yan didn’t catch it. “What did you say?”
He Siheng pursed his lips and drawled, “I said—you’re absolutely right.”
But at that moment, Tan Jing spoke up to explain for him. “We didn’t fight. We were just joking around.”
After a pause, he added, “We have a good relationship.”
He Siheng, who had been standing there sloppily, immediately stuck out his neck in refutation. “Who has a good relationship with you!”
Was this guy an idiot? Saying something like that here was no different from riding on Director Yan’s head declaring they were dating early.
“I just find him an eyesore and wanted to beat him up. I’ll take the punishment and the self-criticism.”
He Siheng shot Tan Jing a fierce glare, warning him not to spout nonsense again. Tan Jing’s expression didn’t change, making He Siheng wonder if he’d even gotten the hint.
Fortunately, Director Yan was convinced He Siheng had truly intended to attack Tan Jing and didn’t believe a word from Tan Jing. He lectured Tan Jing, hating the iron for not becoming steel, “Even now, you’re covering for him? Neither of you is getting out of punishment and self-criticism!”
…
After a thorough tongue-lashing, the two were finally kicked out of the office. Self-study had ten minutes left before ending. Before they left, Director Yan specifically ordered them not to leave early and to return to the classroom obediently and wait for the bell.
The two walked out one after the other toward the classroom, neither speaking.
Dozens of seconds later, He Siheng couldn’t hold back anymore. He turned his head and hissed at the person following behind. “Are you nuts? ‘We have a good relationship’? Why don’t you just blast it with a megaphone that we’re dating?”
“A good relationship doesn’t necessarily mean we’re dating,” Tan Jing said. “Like you and Zhou Yu.”
He Siheng paused, realizing he had a point.
It seemed like he was the one being paranoid and overly sensitive.
Tan Jing silently quickened his pace to walk side by side with him. “If it’s classified as fighting, the school will call the parents.”
He Siheng didn’t want to admit his earlier shortsightedness and said awkwardly, “Call them then. My dad would love to see me beat you up.”
Tan Jing followed up. “At the cost of your next month’s allowance?”
“…”
He Siheng had nothing to say to that. Boss He would indeed love to see him beat Tan Jing, but Lady Shu Qiu had zero tolerance for fighting. Last year, he’d been injured in a fight and tragically had his bank card frozen for three months.
He Siheng ground his teeth and reluctantly admitted, “Fine, you did the right thing this time. Thanks… thanks.”
The word “thanks” was practically squeezed out through gritted teeth, showing how unwilling he was.
Tan Jing didn’t respond. After a few seconds of silence, he suddenly asked, “Still want to hit me?”
He Siheng didn’t react at first. “Hit what?”
Tan Jing stopped. His deep, ink-black eyes looked toward him.
The same docile gaze as in the stall earlier, at anyone’s mercy.
He Siheng suddenly understood. Sure enough, the next second, he brought up the old topic again.
“What I said at the internet cafe still stands. If you still want to beat me up to vent, anytime—”
The moment he started speaking, He Siheng’s face darkened. Before he could finish, He Siheng suddenly kicked his shin.
The kick wasn’t light and caught him off guard. Tan Jing let out a pained grunt, his brows furrowing as he bent over in pain.
He Siheng looked down at him coldly. “This kick is to tell you that even if you say stuff like that, I won’t go easy on you. So don’t think you can play the pity card.”
He enunciated each word. “I really will beat you.”
Tan Jing tugged at the corner of his lips and, enduring the pain, finished the interrupted sentence. “—I’ll oblige anytime.”
He wasn’t shaken by the threat at all.
He Siheng snorted coldly and stormed off aggressively.
Damn it, he was so pissed!
Was he deliberately provoking me to make a move by saying that?
Who asked him to oblige anytime? There were so many ways to apologize and make amends—why was this idiot insisting on me committing domestic violence?
No, that wasn’t right. It was me who suggested beating him up in the first place.
But that was just talk in anger, and he still agreed? What an idiot!
