Yun Xueqing was somewhat surprised. “You’re saying my master isn’t Shen Le?”
When he heard Fu Wuxuan say those words, he subconsciously let out a sigh of relief.
After all, becoming enemies with his master was the last thing he wanted to see.
Fu Wuxuan rubbed his chin, leaving some room in his words. “At least, not the Shen Le we knew.”
Yun Xueqing frowned.
Shen Le wasn’t some prestigious identity anyway. If his master wasn’t Shen Le, then why impersonate him?
But he wouldn’t get answers here. Yun Xueqing glanced at the clock on the conference room wall. “The day’s almost over.”
Mei Qujun’s promised pursuit would arrive soon.
Tu Hexiangchu glanced at the two of them and asked mildly, “What are your plans next?”
Yun Xueqing fell silent, seemingly deep in thought, while Fu Wuxuan smiled brightly. “No plans. We’ll play it by ear. After all, we’ll be on the run—how could we have any?”
Tu Hexiangchu said, “If you run into any difficulties, the Spiritual Energy Special Control Bureau may not be able to act directly, but I’ll do everything I can to help.”
Fu Wuxuan nodded but didn’t take his polite words seriously.
The two left the Spiritual Energy Special Control Bureau. Fu Wuxuan stretched lazily. “Let’s find a place to rest first. Tomorrow, there’s a big show to put on.”
Yun Xueqing thought of Fu Wuxuan’s relationship with Wu Xue and couldn’t help asking, “Are you okay leaving her there?”
“I’m not,” Fu Wuxuan’s expression turned helpless. “But even if I tried to stop her, she’d go anyway.”
Yun Xueqing recalled that it was Wu Xue who had taken them to Strategy God Heavens and ventured a guess. “Has she been to Strategy God Heavens before?”
“Not just been there,” Fu Wuxuan shook his head, a trace of bitterness on his face. “She was captured by them.”
Yun Xueqing was surprised. “She was captured by Strategy God Heavens?”
Fu Wuxuan had nothing to hide from him. After a moment’s hesitation, he continued, “Actually, regarding what your master said about the path to salvation, I can pretty much guess what he plans to do… You know, most of the survivors in the world today are Oracles, but there are still ordinary people who have never entered a Weird Domain.”
“When my sister was captured by Strategy God Heavens, she was just such an ordinary person.”
After saying he wanted to join Strategy God Heavens, Mei Qujun had Wu Xue follow him constantly.
Wu Xue didn’t press for his intentions and simply trailed silently behind him.
The two walked from the corridor all the way to the Scripture Pavilion. Mei Qujun casually unleashed his Oracle power, and the scene before them changed dramatically.
The Scripture Pavilion, faintly lit by sunlight, transformed into a pitch-black dungeon. A dark and foul stench permeated their nostrils. Although they hadn’t approached the dungeon to look closely, faint pained groans emanated from within.
At this sight, Wu Xue finally lifted her eyelids.
“You’re from the Spiritual Energy Special Control Bureau.”
Wu Xue stared at him warily.
Mei Qujun smiled at her. “Don’t misunderstand. I won’t do anything to you… This place should be familiar to you, right?”
Wu Xue stiffened. Then she heard Mei Qujun, with a faint smile on his face, say mildly, “I remember you. You were one of the experimental subjects back then.”
As Wu Xue’s eyes gradually turned red, her human pupils shrinking into snake-like slits, Mei Qujun’s smile widened. “Long time no see, Hui Ye.”
“Wu Xue’s” face shifted from expressionless to one of arrogance and disgust. “Old man, I didn’t expect you’d still be alive after all this time.”
Mei Qujun didn’t get angry at the jab. “I won’t die until I witness the grand era with my own eyes.”
“Wu Xue” glanced disdainfully—or perhaps disgustedly—at the dungeon. “With such despicable methods, you’ll never succeed.”
“How not?” Mei Qujun laughed. “Aren’t you and Wu Xue perfect examples of success?”
“Wu Xue” opened her mouth to retort, but her expression suddenly changed. Her pupils reverted to black, and her face returned to its expressionless state.
Mei Qujun chuckled faintly. “I didn’t expect you could suppress Hui Ye.”
Wu Xue remained expressionless. “It’s not suppression. We’re barely coexisting peacefully.”
Mei Qujun chuckled. “Do you know why I know you have ulterior motives yet still want you to join Strategy God Heavens?”
Wu Xue said nothing, but Mei Qujun didn’t care for her response and continued on his own. “The Heavenly Dao is gone, the balance of all things is lost. Human effort alone can no longer combat the Weirds. If this continues, humanity will go extinct.”
Wu Xue’s gaze darkened as she listened to him say, “If we can’t fight the Weirds, then we use evil to counter evil.”
Wu Xue listened to his words, recalling her days in that dungeon, and found it all absurd.
Her expression turned icy, her eyes like frost-covered blades. She pointed at the dungeon from which agonized groans emanated. “So that’s why you’re fusing people with Weirds, turning them into inhuman monsters?”
Her tone carried rare agitation. If one looked closely, her shoulders trembled uncontrollably.
“It’s not fusion,” Mei Qujun said with a smile tugging at his lips, his eyes calm. “It’s evolution.”
“A self-evolution for humanity.”
“By incorporating a part of the Weird into the human body, it stimulates untapped human potential, bringing unforeseen evolution.”
Mei Qujun looked at Wu Xue, whose face had gone pale as paper, and smiled. “You should understand my idea better than anyone. Before you fused with Hui Ye, you were just an ordinary person who could be easily killed by a Weird.”
“But after fusing with Hui Ye, you awakened as an A-Rank Spiritual Ability User. This is all thanks to Strategy God Heavens.”
Wu Xue’s face grew even paler, but Mei Qujun continued with keen interest. “I’ve conducted countless fusion experiments, but most were unsatisfactory. Only a few succeeded, and you… were the most special among them.”
“You’re the only one who fused with a living Weird.”
Fu Wuxuan recounted Wu Xue’s past. Yun Xueqing’s emotions were complicated. “So Strategy God Heavens has been doing this in secret.”
His voice rose with rare agitation. “So the salvation my master spoke of is fusing people with monsters? Utterly ridiculous!”
Fu Wuxuan opened his mouth but didn’t know how to comfort him. Even he had no standing to do so.
He could only remain silent.
Yun Xueqing took a breath and composed himself.
His emotions always came and went quickly. He soon regained his calm and continued, “So how did Wu Xue come back?”
Fu Wuxuan felt like cotton was stuck in his throat, struggling to speak for a long time before saying, “I failed to protect her… Back then, when I learned she’d been kidnapped by Strategy God Heavens, I mobilized half the Divine Temple to search, but we made no progress. Half a month later, I finally got a lead and prepared to infiltrate their lair, but it was too late.”
Yun Xueqing’s expression grew grave. Fu Wuxuan shook his head. “It was Strategy God Heavens who released her.”
“She didn’t seem physically harmed at the time, but I knew something had changed.”
“Later, she cut off contact with me unilaterally and joined the Spiritual Energy Special Control Bureau.” Fu Wuxuan gave a bitter smile for the umpteenth time. “She probably hates me. She should hate me—I failed to protect her.”
Yun Xueqing shook his head gently and looked at him. “Saying something like that doesn’t sound like you.”
Fu Wuxuan’s defenses crumbled at his words, the gloom he’d been brewing vanishing completely. His tone turned aggrieved. “Am I such a scoundrel in your eyes?”
“No, I mean moping like this doesn’t suit you.”
Yun Xueqing’s tone remained flat and indifferent, as if all the sordid truths they’d uncovered couldn’t shake him.
Casually, he added, “Deep down, you know Wu Xue might have resented you—and that’s human nature—but her cutting ties was more to avoid implicating you.”
Fu Wuxuan was a smart man. He understood many things clearly, like a mirror in his heart, yet he couldn’t get past them.
Whether it was Leng Xian’s matter or Wu Xue’s.
Yun Xueqing’s voice was calm, his emotionless eyes clear and pristine like a cold spring under moonlight. “You know full well that the causes of many events have nothing to do with you, yet you insist on shouldering them… You’re the one who won’t forgive yourself.”
Fu Wuxuan laughed at his words, a hint of relief appearing on his face. “You know how people are—we love to be masochistic, to torment ourselves. Especially someone like me.”
Yun Xueqing had been listening quietly, but he suddenly interrupted. “Wait, someone’s here.”
The small inn they were staying in suddenly brimmed with many presences. Fu Wuxuan sensed it too.
A man dressed all in black violently shoved the door open and strode in.
Yun Xueqing remembered him—he was a member of Strategy God Heavens, one of those who had captured him at the Degeneration Abstinence Institute along with San Zhi and Fu Mi.
Ya Yin’s tone was cold. “The leader told me to wait until tomorrow to kill you, but I happened to pass by.”
Fu Wuxuan laughed in anger at his words. “Just convenient, huh?”
Ya Yin nodded. “Don’t struggle. I brought a lot of people.”
He tapped the seam of his pant leg, and the room instantly filled with many shadows that coalesced into grotesque, twisted Weirds.
Fu Wuxuan grew wary inwardly but kept his relaxed facade. “So many ugly things in front of me—ruined my appetite for dinner.”
“No need for dinner,” Ya Yin drew a knife. “You’re hitting the road now.”
Fu Wuxuan said, “We’re not that obedient… Now, run!”
He grabbed Yun Xueqing and charged toward the door!
But Ya Yin seemed to have anticipated their escape and had already sealed the door.
With the exit blocked, Fu Wuxuan wasn’t flustered. He sneered coldly. “You’ve planned this well. Doesn’t feel like ‘convenient’ at all.”
Who conveniently brought this many Weirds? It was clearly premeditated to avoid delays.
Ya Yin didn’t deny it, laconic as ever. “Don’t struggle.”
Fu Wuxuan shook his head, his face grim. “What a shame for this inn. Such a nice room.”
Soon, it would be destroyed in the fierce battle to come.
