Chapter 6
“Why don’t you just eat a bite of fish food and show it? Don’t break the little guy’s heart…”
Assistant Xu only realized he had misspoken after he said it, trying to rectify the situation: “I mean, that type of food might not suit its taste, so it’s giving it to someone else!”
Wen Ming’s eyelashes cast a shadow on his eyelids. He took it to heart.
“There are several types of trial fish food in the warehouse. I’ll get them right away.” Assistant Xu wiped away a cold sweat. “Hopefully, it will stimulate the mermaid’s appetite.”
…
That evening, when MuMu saw Wen Ming carrying several bags of fish food, it felt a sense of foreboding.
“!?” Buy so much!
Shouldn’t you be saving money? Don’t you know how poor we are? Could it be that our family is completely destitute, and this is our last supper?
Wen Ming opened each bag one by one, pouring a little into his palm to test MuMu’s preferences.
But MuMu continued to swim anxiously in the pool, refusing to eat a single bite…
Wen Ming took the little mermaid’s whimpers as “dislike for the taste” and continued to try.
“This one…”
Wen Ming picked up the last bag, his movements slowing down:
“The company’s newly formulated fish food isn’t selling as well as the previous flavor.
During testing, each ingredient was popular with the mermaids, but after its release, consumer feedback on palatability has been average. I don’t know why.”
His tone was indifferent, very much in line with the attitude of an employee who “doesn’t care about the boss’s life or death.”
The little mermaid, which had been swimming back and forth, suddenly stopped:
So Master’s company sent him to improve the product’s taste!
It immediately lost its aversion to the fish food.
MuMu swam to the edge of the pool, approaching Wen Ming’s hand.
“You like this one?” Wen Ming’s brow twitched slightly. “Sales haven’t met expectations, and we’re already preparing to discontinue it.”
A mermaid’s expressions are very limited.
They eat if they like it, ignore it if they don’t. They won’t tell humans “why.”
That’s why Wen Corporation couldn’t adjust the new fish food formula and had to start over.
The new product’s failure had also put Wen Corporation’s monopoly in jeopardy.
Competitors were all releasing new flavors of fish food, hoping to oust Wen Corporation in one fell swoop.
Just like Qi Xuan’s family, the Qi Corporation’s mermaid supplies company…
MuMu nudged Wen Ming, sniffing the new fish food in his palm.
A strange smell was mixed in.
“Awoo!” No wonder it’s not selling well!
Wen Ming: ?
I feel like I’m being lectured by my own mermaid?
MuMu licked up the bits it liked, leaving behind a freeze-dried shrimp, and looked up at Wen Ming expectantly.
Wen Ming weighed the shrimp in his hand, recognizing it as the type mermaids loved most.
MuMu shook his hand, gurgling in its throat, as if it wanted to say something important.
A mermaid’s vocal cords are different from a human’s. Currently, there are no methods to decipher mermaid language in the interstellar world.
Wen Ming listened patiently: “Not full?”
“…” Stupid Master.
Wen Ming estimated the little mermaid’s nutritional intake for the day and poured some more of the new fish food into his hand.
MuMu, knowing that words wouldn’t work, switched to acting—
It first picked out the freeze-dried shrimp, took a big, delicious bite, then put the shrimp back into the fish food and shook its head, sticking out its tongue:
“Yuck!”
Wen Ming said in surprise: “It’s not tasty when the freeze-dried shrimp is mixed with other ingredients?”
The little mermaid, its acting skills superb, finished the rest of the food: “Phew.”
Smart Master!
‘Its soothing ability is too weak, it’s useless for you. Switch to a high-grade mermaid.’
MuMu nuzzled its cheek against the back of Wen Ming’s hand, its eyes shining as if they could speak:
I’m quite useful, don’t replace me, okay?
Wen Ming’s heart inexplicably softened.
He moved his fingers, brushing against the tip of MuMu’s ear.
The lower part of a mermaid’s ear is similar in shape to a human’s, but the upper part tapers to a point like an elf’s.
The skin at the tip of the ear is very thin. MuMu twitched its ear from the tickling but didn’t dodge.
Wen Ming intentionally brushed against it again, watching the tip of its ear turn red…
MuMu got annoyed, turned its head, and nipped his wrist before sinking into the pool without a sound.
The little mermaid’s biting speed, compared to the carnage of the battlefield, was incredibly slow.
Wen Ming could have easily dodged it, but on a whim, he let MuMu leave a ring of teeth marks on his wrist.
No blood, no broken skin, the marks were very light, showing that it hadn’t used any force at all.
Wen Ming chuckled and picked up the bag of new fish food.
His mermaid trusted him, and he could trust his mermaid too.
“Adjust the formula?”
Assistant Xu was dubious: “We’ve already lost a lot of development funds on this one. Stubbornly continuing to experiment is worse than cutting our losses.”
Wen Ming calmly dealt with the documents in his hand: “Adjust one ingredient. The freeze-dried shrimp can’t be mixed with other ingredients.”
Assistant Xu was stunned for a few seconds: “Where did this conclusion come from?”
“My mermaid.”
“Mer, mermaid?”
Assistant Xu’s glasses slid down his nose in shock: “Admiral, you can’t trust the low intelligence of a mermaid!
Mermaid experts haven’t been able to decipher their language, and most of their behavior is unknown and illogical…”
Wen Ming raised his eyes indifferently from the documents he was flipping through.
Assistant Xu’s remaining words froze in his throat, and he immediately lowered his head:
“I’ll notify everyone for a meeting right away.”
For the next few days, the entire company was busy searching for ingredients to replace the freeze-dried shrimp.
And MuMu had become the company’s unofficial hero…
Every day, it would devour the food Wen Ming fed it, then transform into a picky eater, helping to adjust the formula.
At first, Wen Ming would only offer two alternative ingredients, letting it choose which one it preferred.
But MuMu displayed an unusual aptitude for food.
Not only could it choose ingredients, but it also suggested fine-tuning the proportions of each ingredient and even strongly requested that the dried vegetables be shaped like small dried fish.
It was a discerning gourmand!
On the day the final formula was finalized and put into testing, the Wen Corporation employees were on edge.
“This is the first time I’ve seen a project progress so quickly. Is it going too smoothly?”
“Smoothly? Let’s wait for the test results before using that word!”
“I trust the Admiral. Although I don’t understand the reasoning behind his proposed improvements, he’s always been reliable!”
Assistant Xu exited Wen Ming’s office, heard the employees’ discussion, and gritted his teeth:
The reliable Admiral is currently slacking off, learning how to care for a mermaid’s tail!
Assistant Xu adjusted his glasses, as if flipping a switch for his complaints, muttering under his breath:
“He has a deadpan face during meetings and when reviewing documents, but he’s read the ‘Mermaid Care Manual’ eight hundred times and often studies it with intense focus.
The most ridiculous thing is letting a mermaid, who knows nothing, participate…”
“We’ve received feedback!” someone exclaimed.
The employees crowded around, vying to read the trial feedback for the new fish food:
“Excellent palatability. My two mermaids fought over it. It’s the first time they’ve eaten so enthusiastically. Thumbs up!”
“Wen Corporation’s fish food is the best. After eating it, my mermaid was so satisfied it initiated soothing on its own.”
“Shaping the vegetables like small dried fish should be nominated for one of the greatest inventions in the interstellar world! My mermaid, who hates vegetables, thought they were all meat and ate them all.”
100% positive reviews.
Assistant Xu: OoO
As expected of the mermaid who could serve the Admiral.
He hurried back to Wen Ming’s office: “Admiral, the adjusted product is very suc…cessful.”
The electronic screen at the office door displayed: Clock-out registered.
“So the Admiral clocks out on time too.” Assistant Xu said numbly. “His main job is raising his precious mermaid, his side hustle is being the CEO…”
The first thing CEO Wen did after clocking out was to greet his mermaid:
“MuMu.”
“!” MuMu, bored at home, had developed a series of new skills. Hearing its master’s voice, it excitedly performed a series of forward rolls.
Welcome home!
Wen Ming placed a few small boxes on the edge of the pool. MuMu immediately approached, opening its mouth wide:
“Ahh—”
New flavors again, let me try!
“This is scar repair ointment.” Wen Ming loosened his tie with one hand. “Wait for me.”
He took off his suit jacket and walked out of the mermaid room.
Scar repair ointment?
MuMu turned to look at its tail—
The wound no longer hurt, but the scales were still partially detached, which would leave a scar.
MuMu nudged the scar repair ointment hesitantly:
Is this stuff expensive?
The sound of Wen Ming’s optical brain call with someone came from outside the door.
MuMu craned its neck, holding its breath, only hearing a few vague words:
“Yes, officially launch the upgraded version on Wen Corporation’s website… hard work… reward.”
Its gaze towards the scar repair ointment instantly softened.
This was a reward from the company for Master’s hard work!
When Wen Ming returned to the mermaid room after changing his clothes, he saw the little mermaid lazily resting its tail on the edge of the pool, its tail fin slapping the tiles as if urging him:
Come on, apply the slippery stuff on this fish!
CEO Wen opened the expensive, top-of-the-line repair ointment and obediently went to “serve” the fish master.
The man and mermaid had developed a tacit understanding when it came to applying the ointment.
Whenever Wen Ming dipped his finger into the ointment, MuMu would lift its tail and press it against his hand, perfectly timed.
MuMu had gotten used to the calluses on Wen Ming’s hands. What was once itchy was now incredibly enjoyable. It leaned back in the water, closing its eyes in contentment.
Drowsiness crept in. It heard something fall into the water beside it and opened its eyes to see—
A translucent, small fish.
A snack!
Half asleep, MuMu snapped at the little fish and swallowed it.
The taste wasn’t quite right. Its sleepiness vanished, and it shuddered:
Wait, why is the fishy snack transparent?
Wen Ming hadn’t noticed. He closed the box of cleaning pearls and looked up, searching…
The ‘Mermaid Care Manual’ stated:
‘A mermaid’s tail has the function of soothing mental seascapes and decomposing impurities. They don’t need to use the restroom. After absorbing nutrients from food, impurities are automatically expelled through the gaps in their scales.
Therefore, it is best to regularly clean and care for your mermaid’s tail. The method for caring for the tail is as follows…’
The tail-cleaning pearls were one of Wen Corporation’s most popular products. Their delicate fish shape reduced mermaid resistance, making the cleaning process smoother.
The only drawback was that they were slippery.
One slipped from Wen Ming’s hand, but the pool surface was empty, no floating pearl in sight.
He parted MuMu’s hair, thinking the pearl might be tangled there.
“Chomp, chomp…”
Wen Ming’s expression froze, and he quickly pinched MuMu’s chin: “Spit it out.”
The pearl melted as soon as it entered its mouth. MuMu wanted to cry:
I want to spit it out too!
It opened its mouth, but instead of words of complaint, a burp escaped.
A colorful bubble suddenly floated out of its mouth and popped.
The gluttonous little mermaid’s face turned pale: Uh oh…
