Chapter 32
Machines don’t have instincts.
But the moment the home butler detected MuMu eyeing its mechanical arms, its self-preservation alarm blared, and it quickly retracted them:
“Beep beep, mermaid suppression failed!”
MuMu looked at it strangely: “Awoo?” Scared? Machines don’t feel pain.
A long string of numbers appeared on the home butler’s screen: “Cost of replacing mechanical arms: 1000…”
MuMu gasped and decided to skip “destroying mechanical arms” and “destroying the door lock,” starting with the steps that didn’t cost star coins.
It returned to the closet. Wen Ming was lying on the floor, a soothing agent injector scattered beside him.
Even soothing agents weren’t working anymore!
MuMu backed away in alarm, then charged towards Wen Ming.
Attempt 1: Rush towards Wen Ming while releasing soothing energy!
Wen Ming’s consciousness was fading.
The energy in his mental seascape was clamoring to escape, while the soothing agent was forcefully suppressing it. The two opposing forces wreaked havoc within his body.
He barely managed to catch the figure flying towards him, his head splitting: “MuMu, go back!”
“Awoo!” Why isn’t it working!?
Turbulent energy swirled around Wen Ming, and MuMu, desperate, thought back—
Last time, when it had rushed towards Wen Ming, it had just destroyed the door lock and hadn’t transformed back yet.
Could the hunting form be the key?
But if it transformed now, Wen Ming would see!
MuMu looked at the almost unconscious Wen Ming for a few seconds, then its tail suddenly changed.
The powerful tail slapped Wen Ming, knocking him completely unconscious.
“Woo.” Master, sleep well, leave the rest to me!
The home butler at the doorway froze.
MuMu backed up to it, baring its teeth and waving its claws: “Roar!”
The home butler wisely retracted its arms, its camera turning away.
Attempt 2: Rush towards Wen Ming in hunting form!
MuMu rushed over, hugged Wen Ming, and entered his mental seascape pathways.
The energy-filled pathways were shrouded in mist, and MuMu pushed forward blindly, a sense of unease growing—
Last time, when its soothing ability had surged, the energy in the pathways had parted for it.
It touched the broken tree, and a few leaves turned green, but that was it.
MuMu opened its eyes, staring at its claws helplessly.
A Jiao Ren’s soothing ability really was weak…
“Beep beep, welcome!”
The door announced, unlocking automatically.
“Wen Ming?” The newcomer looked around.
MuMu recognized Dai Rong’s voice and retracted its hunting form, calling out: “Awoo—” Here!
“MuMu!” Dai Rong, pulling a mermaid cage, arrived at the closet. “What happened?”
MuMu slapped the floor with its tail, seeing its savior: “Awoo, awoo.” Help Master!
It moved aside, revealing the unconscious Wen Ming behind it:
“Awoo.” I tried to heal him, but it didn’t work.
“This?”
Dai Rong scanned Wen Ming with a medical device, her brow furrowed: “I received an alert for mental seascape instability, but why does he have a concussion?”
“Gasp!” MuMu was startled.
Oh no, I didn’t control my strength when I knocked him out…
“Fortunately, it’s not serious.” Dai Rong sensed the unusually turbulent energy particles in the house and said gravely, “His mental seascape has deteriorated.”
MuMu’s claws nudged the empty injector on the floor: “Woo!” Even injections aren’t working, what should we do?
“It seems his body has developed a resistance to the soothing agent, we need a new drug.”
Dai Rong efficiently prepared a new injection and administered it to Wen Ming.
MuMu anxiously fidgeted with its claws, praying silently:
Raindrops, raindrops, please make this new medicine work, heal Master!
Dai Rong glanced at it: “This is a new drug I just developed. It can’t heal the mental seascape directly, but its main component is a replica of your soothing energy…”
MuMu glanced at the mermaid cage she had brought and its eyes widened: Could it be?
“We’ll use your soothing energy signature to ‘trick’ Wen Ming’s mental seascape pathways and allow another mermaid to soothe him.”
Dai Rong explained, opening the mermaid cage: “Suppressing Wen Ming’s mental seascape with more drugs will only worsen his condition, we have to try soothing.”
MuMu sighed: “Woo.” Okay.
“Xiao Yu, come and soothe.” Dai Rong gently tapped the side of the mermaid cage, but there was no response. “Xiao Yu?”
The mermaid she had brought wasn’t cooperating. Dai Rong focused her mind and activated her mental seascape to suppress it.
“Woo, woo.” MuMu shook her arm, stopping her.
It peeked into the cage and saw a trembling mermaid huddled inside:
“Are you Xiao Yu? Can you help with the soothing?”
“Hide, hide quickly!” Xiao Yu covered her head. “Such terrifying energy particles, there must be a monster nearby!”
“Don’t scare yourself, it’s just a legged one, I’ve already knocked him out with my tail, he needs your help with soothing.”
For some reason, the chaotic energy in the air avoided MuMu, as if afraid of harming it.
Xiao Yu, realizing that it was safest near MuMu, approached it: “How do you know? Is it really just a legged one who needs soothing?”
“I’m a big streamer who can translate, I don’t lie to humans or mermaids!” MuMu reached out its hand. “Come, I’ll be with you.”
Xiao Yu, bewildered, let it hold its hand and extended its own hand to soothe.
A faint, almost tangible glow emanated from where its hand touched Wen Ming.
It was the manifestation of a high-grade mermaid’s powerful soothing ability.
No resistance, no pain, the soothing proceeded smoothly, and the energy in the air gradually stabilized.
“Wow, so amazing!” MuMu exclaimed. “Thank you.”
Xiao Yu also sensed MuMu’s soothing energy signature and stared at it, unblinking:
“You’re not a mermaid, are you? Your soothing has the scent of the ocean, why don’t you leave the legged ones and return to the ocean?”
MuMu looked down at Wen Ming: “I don’t want to leave.”
“Then you can tell the legged one, let him know you’re not a mermaid, and he can help you.”
“I won’t reveal my secret.”
MuMu said firmly: “Because that’s the only task my clan gave me.”
A few minutes later.
Wen Ming woke up, frowning and pressing his temples, finding that his mental seascape had calmed down.
Dai Rong was putting Xiao Yu back in the mermaid cage: “Awake? You used your mental seascape recently, it almost deteriorated beyond repair!”
“Where’s MuMu?”
“The home butler took it back to the mermaid room.”
Dai Rong handed him the new medicine and explained how to use it.
“Your mental seascape damage is too severe, one soothing session is just a temporary fix.” She suggested, “Keep this high-grade mermaid.”
Wen Ming shook his head after a moment: “No.”
“Why? A few more soothing sessions might improve your condition.”
Wen Ming straightened his rumpled clothes: “I can’t keep another mermaid at home.”
“Your mermaid pool is big enough, is it because of MuMu?” Dai Rong pondered. “MuMu is very intelligent, it might not be willing to share its territory. Or we could switch, let MuMu stay at my place…”
“Mother.”
Dai Rong froze. She recognized that expression, it meant “no,” and “this is not negotiable.”
She sighed deeply: “This new drug is experimental, I’m not sure how many times it can ‘trick’ your mental seascape. Save it for emergencies.
The special soothing agent will pass safety testing soon, I’ll send it to you as soon as possible.”
Wen Ming thanked her politely but distantly.
Dai Rong glanced towards the mermaid room: “Don’t you think MuMu is very different from other mermaids?”
She touched the mermaid cage: “Xiao Yu was initially unwilling to soothe, but MuMu somehow coaxed it out. Has MuMu exhibited any unusual behavior while you’ve been raising it?”
Wen Ming shook his head.
Dai Rong didn’t notice the flicker in his eyes: “Alright, get some rest.”
Ocean Star.
“Humans are dangerous creatures. Any species they covet will never know peace, so we must never interact with them.”
The young Jiao Ren said dismissively: “They live on land, and we live in the ocean, what could they possibly covet from us?”
“You don’t understand!” The elder Jiao Ren said sternly. “They’ve already targeted Jiao Ren for our combat ability and soothing ability!”
“Soothing ability? The kind unique to mermaids?”
“Yes, actually, a Jiao Ren’s soothing ability is even purer and more powerful than a mermaid’s.”
The young Jiao Ren looked upwards: “Was that little Jiao Ren that was captured by humans taken for its soothing ability?”
“I hope it doesn’t reveal how Jiao Ren soothe.”
A sigh echoed in the deep ocean: “No, I hope it’s already dead…”
“Beep beep, mermaid’s mental state detected to be low, searching for cause!”
The home butler, its volume turned up high, wandered aimlessly around Wen Ming, strongly hinting:
“Beep beep, too many search results, unable to confirm the exact cause of the mermaid’s low mental state!”
Wen Ming tapped its casing, a drop of blood sliding down his finger:
“When did you and MuMu become so close? You’re not even paying attention to me anymore?”
The robot stopped its announcements and offered him the first aid kit.
Wen Ming removed the glass shards from his palm with tweezers and cleaned the wound with alcohol.
The home butler’s red indicator light flashed: “Alcohol will sting the wound, iodine is recommended.”
Wen Ming calmly rinsed away the blood and bandaged the wound: “MuMu doesn’t like the smell of iodine.”
It had preferred alcohol when he had disinfected its tail injury.
“The full-length mirror in the closet is broken, clean it up.”
“Beep beep, instruction received.”
Wen Ming checked his reflection in his optical brain, wiping away the blood from the corner of his mouth, before entering the mermaid room.
The mermaid room was unusually quiet.
The mermaid pool, usually lively at the sound of his footsteps, was still, without a single ripple.
The jewelry box was placed by the edge of the pool, and the little mermaid was curled up at the bottom, its tail drooping, asleep.
Wen Ming opened a bag of freeze-dried snacks.
MuMu’s fin twitched, but it remained submerged, its eyes closed.
Even food wasn’t working?
Wen Ming’s brow twitched, and he touched the water’s surface with his finger, the scent of alcohol permeating the pool.
MuMu instantly shot up, grabbing Wen Ming’s wrist and sniffing at his palm.
“Awoo?” Not bleeding anymore?
Wen Ming stroked its hair with his other hand. MuMu’s hairstyle was a bit messy after the earlier chaos.
“Come here, let me fix your hair.”
MuMu angrily nipped his hand: “Growl!” Your hand is like this, and you’re worried about my hair?
Suddenly, its nose twitched, and it sniffed at his hand, following the scent upwards.
The little mermaid leaned against Wen Ming, its gaze fixed on his arm.
It was the smell of fish!
For its master, it was no longer the most special mermaid…
Wen Ming lifted it onto the padded wall and discreetly pulled his arm away:
“Why aren’t you wearing it?”
The simple little mermaid’s attention was easily diverted: “Awoo?” Wearing what?
Wen Ming picked up the box by the pool, opened it, and the diamond sparkled under the light.
MuMu’s mouth formed an “O” shape: “Doo!” Shiny!
It touched its hair: “Awoo?” But if I wear it on my head, I can’t see it.
“It’s an ear stud.”
Wen Ming took out the ear stud, a simple solitaire design: “It’s worn on your ear.”
MuMu’s mouth immediately turned downwards, and it covered its pierced ear, jumping back into the water.
The bubbles that surfaced seemed to be saying: I don’t want to wear it.
“I know you used to wear something on your ear, that person said it was your name.”
The bubbles became more frantic: “Pop, pop, boo…” He lied, 55 was my number.
My name is only MuMu.
“But this ear stud doesn’t represent your name.” Wen Ming coaxed patiently. “Wear it, as a symbol of my most special little mermaid.”
Most special?
MuMu peeked above the surface, its eyes questioning: Can I still be the most special?
Wen Ming patted the padded wall.
By the time MuMu reacted, muscle memory had already brought it to the edge of the pool, in front of Wen Ming.
It felt a warm touch on its left ear, followed by the coolness of the ear stud.
“All done.”
MuMu looked down, seeing its reflection in the water, adorned with the sparkling diamond.
“Doo!” I’m shiny too!
Wen Ming’s fingertips traced the outline of its ear again and again.
A new name, a healed tail, a pierced ear covered by an ear stud… all traces of that person had disappeared from the little mermaid.
Wen Ming connected his optical brain to the projector and displayed an image of Professor Yin by the pool.
MuMu, seeing that face, flared its fins and retreated to the center of the pool: “Growl…”
Wen Ming and the projected image of Professor Yin were on opposite sides of the mermaid pool.
“MuMu, come here,” Wen Ming called. “Who is your master?”
MuMu: ?
Did I damage his brain when I gave him a concussion?
It pondered for a moment, then slowly swam towards Wen Ming, tilting its head expectantly for a pet.
Wen Ming moved away without hesitation, walking to the other side:
“Don’t hesitate, who is your master?”
MuMu: ???
Master has gone crazy!
This time, MuMu decisively swam towards the projector and, under Wen Ming’s darkening gaze, pressed the power button.
As Professor Yin’s image vanished, MuMu swatted the remote away with its tail:
“Awoo—” How can you be so childish!?
The little mermaid clung to Wen Ming, nipping at his wrist playfully: “Chomp, chomp…” It’s you, it’s you, it’s you!
It rubbed against the bandage on Wen Ming’s hand, its desire to heal him stronger than ever.
The most urgent task: making money!
Earn money, buy a high-grade mermaid, heal Wen Ming!
Pfft Little Butler’s self-preservation tactic was 100% effective hahaha
Hmmm so then humans DID capture Jiao Rens for their soothing ability too. Did that professor know about it when MuMu was caught?
Thank you for the chapter!
