Chapter 50
“Masked streamer, hello!”
Scarface and the poachers greeted MuMu enthusiastically.
“Hello.” MuMu relaxed, glancing at the ship. “I heard a mermaid’s cries, do you need help with translation?”
The poachers were ecstatic:
“We’d be grateful!”
“Oh my god, I never thought I’d meet the masked streamer, let alone talk to him face to face!”
“Why don’t we continue this conversation on board?”
Scarface invited: “This ship is heading to the human settlement area, where the warp-capable ships dock. The signal is stable there, and you can help us with translation on the way, how about it?”
A place with stable signal and airship docks!
MuMu’s eyes lit up: “Okay!”
Its heart pounded as it walked towards the ship, all eyes on it. It tried to appear natural, reassuring itself:
I am the masked streamer, I haven’t lied to them, what’s there to be afraid of?
Rescue Mama, sneak away at the settlement area, wait for Master to pick me up, perfect plan…
“Streamer?”
As it passed Scarface, MuMu was stopped.
“Your mental seascape is strange, faint and almost nonexistent. I’ve never sensed anything like it.”
Scarface eyed the seaweed wrapped around MuMu’s face and the seashell pendant, then asked suspiciously:
“What’s in your bag?”
MuMu’s clothes, slightly dry from the wind, were now drenched in cold sweat. It reached into the bag, its hand brushing past the mermaid snacks, and pulled out a tangram puzzle:
“A small toy for my child.”
The colorful puzzle made Scarface pause: “You have a child?”
MuMu imitated Xiao Jun’s doting father expression and smiled: “Yes, I got the mask I wear during livestreams at a parent-child event.”
Scarface’s suspicion vanished: “The media couldn’t find any information about you, I thought you were a recluse.”
The other poachers joked: “What are you thinking, Scarface? How could he be a recluse? You think he’s not human?”
“Understands mermaid language, could he be an ocean beastman?”
“Don’t be ridiculous, a beastman swimming in clothes, haha!”
What’s so funny?
MuMu boarded the ship, puzzled, and went to the water tank on the deck. Its mother looked more haggard than it remembered, her icy blue eyes filled with sadness. Seeing MuMu, her expression was a mixture of confusion and disbelief.
She probably couldn’t understand why a human carried the scent of a Jiao Ren.
MuMu desperately wanted to transform, jump into the tank, and nuzzle against its mother.
It took a deep breath and said, controlling its voice: “Hello, mermaid.”
Long time no see, Mama!
“Streamer, we need you to translate for this blue mermaid.”
As Scarface approached the tank, MuMu’s mother thrashed about, churning the water.
“It’s been this agitated the whole time!” Scarface said with disgust, tossing a dried fish into the tank, to no effect.
“It’s distressed, mental seascape suppression will only make it worse.” MuMu emphasized, “Don’t use your mental seascapes on it.”
“Fine,” Scarface agreed.
The poaching ship set off, the hull rocking gently, and the small island gradually disappeared from view.
“Beep beep, signal fluctuation detected… beep beep, signal disruption detected!”
MuMu discreetly touched its ear stud, silencing the home butler.
The crew were busy with departure procedures. Scarface looked around, waiting until they were alone, and raised an eyebrow at MuMu:
“Streamer, you’re familiar with Ocean Star, have you ever heard of a creature called a Jiao Ren?”
MuMu feigned surprise: “Jiao Ren? Do they really exist?”
“I’m not sure, but this blue mermaid is unusual.”
Scarface glanced at MuMu’s mother: “We found it in the open ocean, it almost attacked us, ferocious like a Jiao Ren that has spotted its prey.”
MuMu tilted its head, pretending to listen to the mermaid:
“That’s not true, it says it was abandoned here by its human owner, then captured again, it thinks you’re toying with it, that’s why it’s so angry.”
Combined with the burning hatred in its mother’s eyes, the explanation was flawless.
“Is that so…” Scarface sighed in disappointment.
The crew, finishing their tasks, gathered around: “Is the masked streamer translating? Amazing!”
With more and more people surrounding the tank, MuMu’s mother’s cries became even more shrill and piercing.
The poachers covered their ears in discomfort, asking MuMu: “Streamer, what’s it yelling?”
MuMu pointed at one of them: “What’s the worst insult you can think of?”
“***!”
“Okay.” MuMu pointed at another. “You?”
“****!”
They racked their brains, competing to come up with the most creative insults, wanting to impress the masked streamer.
MuMu asked the entire row of poachers, then said: “Combine all of those, and that’s what the mermaid is calling you.”
“…”
The insults, thrown right back at them, stung.
“I wouldn’t have thought of such horrible things if I knew they were directed at me.”
“Why did we even start this stupid competition? Now we’re all clowns.”
While they were busy blaming each other, MuMu crouched down beside the tank and observed—
Its mother was trapped in the fiber net, the opening tied to the bottom of the tank, out of MuMu’s reach.
MuMu patted its ear and whispered: “Little Butler, how do you open this kind of net?”
“Beep beep, environment scanned, requires a remote control.”
MuMu hugged its bag regretfully: I should have brought the projector remote…
The home butler paused: “The net has a dedicated remote.”
“Such a large ship, so many people, how am I supposed to find it? Should I just tear apart the ship with my claws?”
MuMu smacked its head: No, no, they’ll use their mental seascapes, and I’ll be captured too.
Woo, I’m such an idiot, I can’t think of a solution…
‘Darling, I’m under so much pressure, I feel like I’m drowning.’ A line from a melodrama echoed in MuMu’s mind.
‘Don’t carry it all alone, I’ll help you.’
‘But you’re not here!’
‘I have a surprise for you. Close your eyes, and the one you’re waiting for will come to you.’
MuMu squeezed its eyes shut: Are melodramas lying to me?
“Beep beep!”
An electronic voice echoed in MuMu’s ear: “Homeowner detected on the same planet!”
“!” MuMu clutched the seashell pendant, its tail almost popping out in excitement.
Master was on Ocean Star, even earlier than promised?
So they weren’t lying!
MuMu’s joy was short-lived. The home butler emitted an error message:
“Beep beep, signal disruption, unable to send location or transmit messages.”
“…So Master is on Ocean Star, but we can’t find each other? Like a missed connection in a melodrama?”
Does every cliché have to become reality?
“Hey! Look, what’s that?”
Someone pointed at a bright light in the sky: “A warping airship?”
“I don’t think there are any scheduled arrivals at this time.” Scarface also looked up.
The light in the sky started moving, like a shooting star.
“That’s fast!” Scarface exclaimed. “It’s not an airship, it’s a mech! Heading towards the island we just left.”
“Really? What kind of mech emits such a bright warp signature? The pilot must have an incredibly strong mental seascape.”
“Yeah…” Scarface scratched his head. “Maybe I was mistaken…”
A mech?
MuMu stared at the light, a strong intuition telling it: Master is there!
It jumped up and waved at the sky.
“What are you doing, streamer?” Scarface asked curiously. “Is that some kind of mystical ritual for understanding mermaid language?”
MuMu chuckled nervously: “I’m… just greeting the people on the airship.”
They all thought it was a joke: “Streamer, you’re so funny, they can’t see you unless you’re as big as a whale, haha!”
MuMu’s eyes darted around: That’s an idea…
I have to make Master notice this ship!
MuMu crouched beside the water tank, pressed its palms together, and moved them in a wave-like motion.
Its mother, seeing the gesture, opened her mouth unconsciously:
“…Awoo?”
‘Mama—look!’ The little blue Jiao Ren pressed its claws together, mimicking a swimming motion. ‘Doesn’t it look like a little fish swimming?’
‘You little rascal, always chasing after fish, still not tired of it?’ The Jiao Ren mother’s tone was stern, but her touch on its head was gentle.
‘Swim, swim~’ The little Jiao Ren circled its mother, mimicking a fish. ‘I wish the little fish could understand me, I want to play with them.’
‘Our sonar can control them. Emit a sonar signal and add the frequency of your message, try it.’
The little Jiao Ren followed its mother’s instructions and called out.
A few nearby fish obediently swam over, circling it.
‘Wow, it works!’ The little Jiao Ren grabbed one and kissed it, startling the fish, which quickly swam away.
The mother also emitted a sonar signal, and the approaching school of fish created a current, sweeping the little Jiao Ren along.
‘So amazing! When I grow up, can I call so many fish too?’
‘Of course.’
The little Jiao Ren flicked its tail fin happily, mimicking a fish again:
‘Let’s have a competition then, Mama! When I do this, we both emit a sonar signal, and whoever calls more fish wins!’
“Awoo?” Are you!?
The Jiao Ren mother watched MuMu make a gesture only they knew, her gills fluttering rapidly:
“Woo!” My child, is that you? But how are you human?
MuMu nodded and extended its arm into the tank.
The scent of blood from the cut on its arm, the distinct scent of Jiao Ren blood, instantly confirmed it for its mother:
This was her child!
“Whoo!” I’ve finally found you!
Tears welled up in the Jiao Ren mother’s eyes, mixing with the water. She gripped the net, pouring years of longing into her next cry:
“Awoo.” I’m sorry, I failed to protect you…
MuMu sniffled and repeated the fish-mimicking gesture, again and again. Its mother forced a smile, her voice choked with emotion:
“Awoo—”
The high-pitched cries were painful to the humans’ ears.
Scarface yelled: “Shut up!”
Unable to silence the mermaid, he frowned, about to use his mental seascape.
“Let it be!” MuMu stopped Scarface. “It’s saying goodbye to its former owner, it’ll be quiet after this.”
Scarface, trusting the masked streamer implicitly, said: “Fine… ow, its cries weren’t this painful before!”
“Awoo—”
‘Come here!’
The cry, infused with different frequencies, echoed through the water, and the nearby fish, their bodies swaying, instinctively followed the call.
The poachers on the ship, covering their ears, didn’t notice the commotion in the ocean.
Nor did they notice the light in the sky changing direction…
MuMu is so smart!! Will ML also discover his identity this time?
