The group gathered to discuss the banquet.
“Host it at Yunhuan—book the whole place to show how much we value Nono,” Shen Lingyi said enthusiastically. “Boheng, I’ll leave the arrangements to you.”
“Don’t worry, ma’am. I’ll handle everything perfectly.”
Fu Shizhang thought for a moment. “No media yet. Nono’s popular now, and you’ll be shooting more variety shows. Publicly announcing he’s a Fu Family child might draw unwanted attention.”
Jiang Shunnian found it very reasonable.
“The date is set for half a month from now—plenty of time. Oh, right, we’ll need custom outfits made for the three of you.” Shen Lingyi turned to Jiang Shunnian. “Shunnian, do you have any favorite brands? We can have the designer come to you. In the future, if you need clothes for any events, just contact Boheng. He’ll take care of it.”
As a celebrity, red carpet events were inevitable, and whether a star could wear haute couture directly reflected their popularity and commercial value.
Jiang Shunnian had never worn haute couture before due to his low status. He hadn’t expected to be able to commission designs directly now.
He accepted it calmly, knowing it represented the Fu Family’s face. “I don’t have a particular favorite brand, Aunt. You decide.”
Shen Lingyi had been immersed in this world since childhood and knew it inside out. She turned to Shen Boheng. “Boheng, contact a designer from D&Valois today. They have a showpiece from their spring collection that’s perfect for Shunnian.”
“Right away, ma’am.”
They discussed a few more details, and the banquet was essentially settled.
The thought of all the envious gazes she’d receive on banquet day made Shen Lingyi unable to suppress the upward curve of her lips.
She looked at the young man sitting primly on the sofa and liked him more with every glance. Smiling, she said, “Shunnian, there’s one more thing I’d like to discuss. You and Yanli can decide on Nono’s education, but for school, he’ll need daily pickups and drop-offs. I think it’s best if he’s close to Yanli. When you’re off filming or traveling for work, Nono can stay with Yanli. How does that sound?”
Jiang Shunnian nodded. “You’re right, Aunt.”
After the variety show wrapped, he’d need to audition for crews. If successful, he’d enter production and shooting, making it inconvenient to bring Nono along.
Besides, Nono was already at school age.
“Perfect.” Shen Lingyi continued, “Yanli’s place has great access. He bought the three floors above and below together back then. Pick one—we’ll transfer it to you.”
Jiang Shunnian refused at once. “I can’t accept that, Aunt.”
“Then transfer it to Nono.” Shen Lingyi was quick on her feet.
That left Jiang Shunnian unable to refuse.
Fu Yanli spoke up. “I’ll allocate 5% of my Fu Corporation shares to Nono. Shunnian can manage them until Nono comes of age.”
Jiang Shunnian: “…”
It was as if the Fu Family had discovered a novel way to shower gifts. The three of them eagerly piled on more things Nono couldn’t possibly use yet.
—like a car, when Nono was only three? Could he even drive?
Jiang Shunnian knew these were genuine gestures of goodwill. He couldn’t keep ungraciously refusing, so he accepted them all, already pondering how to repay them in kind.
Touched, he felt grateful countless times over that Nono’s other father was Fu Yanli.
Nono, watching cartoons obliviously on the side, had no idea he’d transformed overnight into a pampered little heir.
Shen Boheng had scheduled the designer for tomorrow at ten a.m.—they’d fly in—so Jiang Shunnian needed to stay another day at the Fu Family home.
After lunch, he took Nono for a nap. When they woke, they learned Grandpa was building a little swing for him in the courtyard. Nono immediately scampered off happily. Shen Lingyi and Shen Boheng headed out to meet with invitation designers but didn’t forget to ask if Jiang Shunnian had friends to invite, giving him full respect.
Jiang Shunnian didn’t have many friends but wanted to invite Yu Yanchen and Pei Qingyi. Shen Lingyi took the names seriously and noted them down.
With time on his hands, Jiang Shunnian lounged on the balcony sofa in his room, gazing at the blooming flowers outside, and dialed Pei Qingyi.
“Shunnian?” Pei Qingyi picked up first. “I’ve had my cousin pull strings with the Qin Family these past few days, but unfortunately, they won’t budge.”
Jiang Shunnian hadn’t expected Pei Qingyi to go so far for him. “President Pei, that’s actually what I wanted to talk about. Nono’s been officially recognized by the Fu Family. We’ll announce it in half a month, and I’d like to invite you. Are you free?”
“The Fu Family?” Pei Qingyi sounded puzzled—Nono’s mother was from the Fu Family? But he didn’t pry and agreed outright. “I’ll be there. You’re staying in Huazhen, then?”
Jiang Shunnian was grateful for Pei Qingyi’s mentorship and had no plans to jump ship. The Fu Family seemed aware and hadn’t mentioned it either.
“Of course, President Pei. I see a lot of potential in Huazhen—it’s a great fit for me.”
Pei Qingyi’s voice warmed with a smile. “Good. One more thing: any plans to marry Nono’s mother soon?”
Though not an idol stan, Jiang Shunnian was a public figure. Marrying into a wealthy family—especially with a chaebol heiress—would require advance PR.
Jiang Shunnian paused, hesitant. “…No marriage.”
Not in the short term, anyway. Long term… he wasn’t sure.
“The Fu Family only accepting Nono?” Pei Qingyi frowned.
Such “take the child, ditch the dad” cases were popping up among elites, and he assumed that was Jiang Shunnian’s situation.
Jiang Shunnian hurried to clarify before the misunderstanding deepened. “No, no! I haven’t agreed.”
Pei Qingyi fell silent.
Jiang Shunnian rubbed his forehead, tone conflicted. “President Pei, you’ll understand at the banquet—it’s complicated. Also, the Fu Family will handle the Qin Guanyue issue, so no need to worry.”
“Alright, as long as you’ve got it under control.”
After hanging up, Jiang Shunnian let out a long breath. Why do I feel like such a scumbag?
He messaged Yu Yanchen next. Training had just wrapped, and upon hearing Nono was back with the Fu Family, Yu Yanchen video-called immediately. “Bro, you’ve made it! Marrying into wealth! Don’t forget your bros when you strike it rich!”
Jiang Shunnian, burned once before by misunderstanding, clarified right away. “…No, just Nono’s recognized. It’s not that the Fu Family won’t accept me—I’ve refused.”
“Why?!” Yu Yanchen couldn’t fathom it. “If some chaebol heiress liked me, I’d be her loyal dog in a heartbeat!”
“Eh, it’s complicated.” Jiang Shunnian didn’t know how to explain. “Anyway, I’ll mail you an invite. Don’t forget to come.”
“Wouldn’t miss it!” Yu Yanchen showed the awkwardness of a C-list actor, fidgeting nervously. “But first time at a chaebol banquet—what do I need to prep? Ugh, I’m tanned like charcoal right now!”
Jiang Shunnian realized he was clueless too. They stared at each other blankly for a moment, but it wasn’t hard. “I’ve invited President Pei too. Ride with him and pick his brain on etiquette?”
As for himself, he could ask Uncle Shen.
“Sure.” Yu Yanchen figured Pei Qingyi’s aloof elegance was intimidating, but he wouldn’t let his bro down.
With calls done, Jiang Shunnian had nothing else. He stepped out to check on Nono’s swing progress but ran into Fu Yanli working on his laptop in the living room.
He tried to slip past quietly, but Fu Yanli called out. “Shunnian, I need to talk.”
Jiang Shunnian’s scalp tingled. Haven’t we settled everything? What now?
But it was serious business.
“Are you and Nono still interested in Baby Travel Plan? I looked into it—the Qin Family’s pulled their investment. If you want to continue, the Fu Family can cover it. Perfect timing before the banquet; we could even catch one more episode.”
Jiang Shunnian was willing.
For one, he’d signed the contract and didn’t want to cost the company. For two, the show’s format was solid—he and Nono had a blast.
Work was about to ramp up visibly, leaving less time for Nono. Trips like this were rare, and this season went abroad—Jiang Shunnian had never traveled overseas and was curious.
“I’ll check with Nono, but personally, yes.” Jiang Shunnian answered honestly.
In their time together, Fu Yanli had come to admire Jiang Shunnian’s rare qualities: frank, straightforward, neither servile nor overbearing. In the cutthroat business world of deceit and honeyed lies, being around him felt refreshingly easy.
Even without that fateful night four years ago, he’d want a partner like this.
Too bad he doesn’t like me yet. Gotta keep trying.
Fu Yanli closed his laptop screen casually and stood. “Alright, let’s go find Nono.”
Fu Yanli’s broad shoulders and long legs moved with poised grace. Adjusting his pace for Jiang Shunnian made him seem leisurely, the kind of presence that stood out in any crowd.
Jiang Shunnian’s lithe figure and standout aura held its own beside him, unshadowed.
Shen Lingyi spotted them walking side by side through the floor-to-ceiling windows and smiled in satisfaction. Perfect match.
Nono wore a sun hat, sitting obediently in a kiddie chair. Fu Shizhang sat nearby in a taishi chair, holding fresh-squeezed juice and feeding him sips now and then.
Sunlight filtered through the leaves, casting irregular patterns on the ground. A gentle breeze swayed them, evoking utter leisure.
The tree was thick enough for three people to hug, with a sturdy horizontal branch ideal for a swing.
Manor staff balanced on a ladder, securing the ropes. Nono had been craning his neck to watch but lit up at Jiang Shunnian’s arrival and bolted over. “Daddy! Big Daddy!”
Jiang Shunnian scooped his son into a hug and eyed the swing’s progress. On the other side, someone crafted the seat with a safety strap for Nono.
He could already picture Nono’s joy once it was done.
Servants brought chairs for the two men. Jiang Shunnian asked Nono about continuing Baby Travel Plan.
Nono didn’t fully grasp why the last episode fell through, but Daddy’s distress was etched in his mind. At the question, he furrowed his little brow. “Are there still people Daddy hates there?”
“No, Big Daddy’s handled it.” Jiang Shunnian assured him.
Nono relaxed and nodded. “I wanna travel with Daddy!”
Daddy’s so happy on the show—I am too!
High-EQ Nono didn’t forget to praise Fu Yanli. “Big Daddy’s awesome! Thanks, Big Daddy!”
Fu Yanli tweaked his little ear gently, voice warm. “No need to thank me, Nono.”
If only you could help me win over your dad.
President Fu resolved to win over Dad through the kid.
Once the swing was ready, Nono eagerly wanted on. Jiang Shunnian buckled him in and gave gentle pushes from behind. Laughter rang out.
“Daddy, I feel like I’m flying!”
His cherubic son, dimples flashing like carved jade; the stunning beauty smiling tenderly beside him—framed against verdant trees and summer sun, it was a picture-perfect scene.
Too beautiful to resist—Fu Yanli pulled out his phone and snapped a photo.
Hearing the shutter, Jiang Shunnian glanced up, locking eyes with Fu Yanli’s deep gaze. Both froze for a beat.
Jiang Shunnian ducked his head first, pretending not to notice, and kept pushing. But his thoughts swung gently, just like the swing.
After a bit, Jiang Shunnian took Nono down for water. Rested, Nono bounced back, clamoring “Grandpa!” and dragging Fu Shizhang off to practice calligraphy. He even booked Big Daddy for evening English practice.
Fu Shizhang was utterly melted by his grandson and scooped him up to go.
Only then did Jiang Shunnian realize Nono had this lively, clingy side. Before, Nono had been the one accommodating him, seeming so quiet and sensible, never demanding.
The realization brought a twinge of guilt. If I’d known about Nono, I wouldn’t have run that morning after.
“What’re you thinking?” Fu Yanli asked.
“I’ve shortchanged Nono too much.” Jiang Shunnian replied glumly. “I thought I was doing great by him, but he was just accommodating me.”
Fu Yanli rested a light hand on his shoulder, voice low and soothing. “But you’ve given him your absolute best every step. Nono’s always been proud of his amazing daddy. As for the rest, we’ll make it up together from now on.”
