After Marrying Professor Song 8

Chapter 8

Lu Xuefeng was indeed scheduled to return the next day.

However, it was still a weekday, and Song Muqing was busy with a student project, so they didn’t meet immediately.

Jin Hong asked Lu Xuefeng about his previous dinner companion, noticing he hadn’t mentioned any further meetings.

Usually, if there was progress, the frequency of their meetings would gradually increase.

Since returning, Lu Xuefeng had been focused on the dance drama and his grandmother, not thinking about this matter. Jin Hong’s question made him realize this.

He and Song Muqing hadn’t spoken much these past two days, nor had they mentioned their next meeting.

Lu Xuefeng wasn’t the type to initiate contact, nor did he care whether the other party contacted him.

They were both adults with their own work and lives, bound to be busy at times. There was no need to constantly be on their phones, sending messages and waiting for replies.

Jin Hong asked, “Didn’t it work out again?”

Lu Xuefeng shook his head, saying no.

They had a good conversation.

“Then why haven’t you been in contact?”

Lu Xuefeng explained, “We’ve both been busy.”

Jin Hong looked at him, unsure of his attitude, wondering if it would fizzle out like the previous blind dates.

However, Lu Xuefeng hadn’t considered that possibility.

He had met Song Muqing twice, and the other man had made a good impression. Moreover, they were still in contact.

Based on his limited understanding, Lu Xuefeng knew Song Muqing wouldn’t forget their agreement; they simply hadn’t found a suitable time to meet.

Song Muqing had told him he would be busy these past few days.

So, Lu Xuefeng naturally understood.

Moreover, Lu Xuefeng couldn’t help but recall what Song Muqing had said that night, expressing his longing.

He had actually… said he missed him.

Lu Xuefeng realized Song Muqing never seemed to hold back when expressing his emotions.

Even after several days, the feeling remained clear.

The next afternoon, he left the theater early to visit the attending physician at the hospital.

The doctor was busy with surgeries these past two days, so he had to schedule an appointment in advance.

The doctor informed Lu Xuefeng that based on a thorough cardiac assessment, including ECG, echocardiogram, and other functional tests, his grandmother’s current condition wasn’t suitable for surgery.

He showed Lu Xuefeng all the data and test results.

His grandmother’s heart condition was complex.

Moreover, elderly patients had lower cardiac reserve capacity. In her current state, surgery was too risky and could lead to a series of post-operative complications.

Therefore, the best course of action for now was to optimize medication and implement appropriate cardiac rehabilitation training.

If her condition remained stable, there might still be a chance for surgery later.

Lu Xuefeng left the office feeling disheartened.

Surgery wasn’t the only way to treat the condition, but it was the most effective and quickest.

Although the doctor said there was a chance of extending her lifespan without surgery, Lu Xuefeng was still worried.

He returned to the ward; his grandmother had just woken up from her nap. Sister Xu told him that she hadn’t been feeling well today, had no appetite, and had mostly been resting, sleeping soundly apart from receiving injections and medication.

Lu Xuefeng nodded, acknowledging this.

He sat beside the bed and held his grandmother’s hand.

Deng Yuzhen asked, “Why are you here so early today?”

“To spend some time with you.”

He asked how she was feeling, whether she had any discomfort in her chest, and she said she was fine.

But Lu Xuefeng knew she wasn’t telling the truth, afraid of worrying him.

Remembering that she hadn’t eaten much, he saw the thermos of soup Sister Xu had prepared, still warm, and urged his grandmother to have some.

She reluctantly had a few sips, then reminded him, “Xuefeng, your phone is ringing.”

Lu Xuefeng glanced at the screen. It was a message from Song Muqing.

“The project is finished. I just got done.”

Lu Xuefeng was surprised that Song Muqing had specifically informed him.

As he was about to reply, another message popped up.

Song Muqing: [Image]

Song Muqing: The weather is lovely today. If you’re free, would you like to meet?

Lu Xuefeng opened the image. It was a casual photo taken by Song Muqing, showing the sky and trees.

The weather was indeed nice.

But he was at the hospital today and wouldn’t be able to meet.

[Sorry, not today.]

[Busy?]

Lu Xuefeng hesitated whether to tell Song Muqing, then decided to be honest: [At the hospital.]

Song Muqing suddenly asked if he was at the First Hospital.

This puzzled Lu Xuefeng.

He looked up and saw his grandmother looking at him kindly, watching him texting someone.

Lu Xuefeng subconsciously lowered his phone.

His grandmother chuckled. “Go ahead and chat. Don’t mind me.”

Lu Xuefeng smiled helplessly, replying with a brief “Yes” before turning off his phone.

“I won’t.”

Lu Xuefeng set his phone aside.

Having never seen her grandson like this before, she couldn’t help but ask, “Is it the person you mentioned to me?”

“Yes.”

“What does he do?”

Lu Xuefeng now knew that Song Muqing was a biology professor at Z University. “He’s a teacher.”

Deng Yuzhen murmured approvingly, “A teacher, that’s good…”

In the eyes of most elders, teachers, doctors, and government jobs were considered stable and respectable.

Lu Xuefeng knew his grandmother would approve.

After the arrival of late autumn, the temperature was lower, and the sunlight wasn’t as intense, warm and pleasant on the skin.

Seeing the clear and sunny weather outside, he decided to take his grandmother for a walk downstairs.

Staying in the ward all day must be boring.

This was usually Sister Xu’s task, but since he had time, he would do it himself, spending more time with his grandmother.

His grandmother’s legs and feet were still relatively good. Although Lu Xuefeng had brought a wheelchair, Deng Yuzhen wanted to walk.

Lu Xuefeng helped his grandmother put on a thicker coat, and they slowly strolled downstairs to the garden area, basking in the sun, enjoying the scenery, and passing the time.

There were several other patients on the benches, some accompanied by family, others being pushed by nurses.

Deng Yuzhen often came downstairs to sunbathe and had gotten to know a few patients of similar age, often chatting together.

They saw Lu Xuefeng, a new face, and asked about him, learning that he was Deng Yuzhen’s grandson. They praised his good looks and successful career.

Lu Xuefeng responded politely, then remained quiet, sitting beside his grandmother and listening to their conversation.

A few elders left, but his grandmother continued to sit and enjoy the sun and the time with her grandson.

Lu Xuefeng was lost in thought.

After a while, he heard his phone ringing in his pocket.

Lu Xuefeng looked at the number. It was a local number, somewhat familiar, but he couldn’t immediately recall who it was.

The phone rang several times, showing no sign of stopping.

He excused himself to his grandmother and walked to a quieter spot. Just as he answered the call and held the phone to his ear, he casually glanced ahead.

He suddenly saw a familiar figure.

He froze.

Song Muqing was standing there, also holding a phone, his figure tall and straight, not far away.

Then, a soft chuckle came from Lu Xuefeng’s phone.

Followed by Song Muqing’s slightly deep, pleasant voice.

“Mr. Lu, while waiting here, I was wondering when you would notice me.”
