Chapter 38
“Sootball…” Lin Ran, seeing the white fabric and Sootball’s eager eyes, understood its intentions and blushed.
“Cheep cheep!” Sootball, sensing his agreement, nuzzled against him.
“But everyone else only has one. Wouldn’t it be unfair if you had two?”
“And if I make one for you, shouldn’t I make one for Snowball too?” he teased, enjoying Sootball’s reaction.
Sootball: ! Its eyes widened, as if genuinely troubled. If A-Ran made one just for him, wouldn’t everyone else want one too? A-Ran would be exhausted…
Lin Ran chuckled, noticing its tail twitching as it pondered. “Let’s eat first. Can you come back afterwards? I need to go to the village committee, but I’ll be back soon,” he said, carrying Sootball downstairs. He wanted Sootball to enjoy its limited time in the real world.
“Cheep—” Sootball nodded obediently.
Lin Ran went to the village committee office. The first batch of fruit juice was ready, and he had to try it.
“Lin-zai’s gone. Eat more, you poor thing. So skinny,” Grandma said, bringing Sootball a bowl of kung pao chicken. Lin Ran had been regulating Sootball’s diet, limiting its intake of oily and salty food. It had already eaten many baozi that morning.
Sootball, however, obediently refrained from touching the tempting dish, making Grandma feel sorry for it.
“Cheep cheep!?” The aroma was overwhelming, and it couldn’t resist taking a few bites, earning praise from Grandma for its appetite. Within a minute, it had finished the entire bowl, its belly round.
“There, there. Wipe your mouth. Don’t let Lin-zai see. If you’re ever hungry again, come find Grandma,” she said, wiping its mouth, thinking it was a stray.
A huge misunderstanding was born. Lin Ran would later wonder why Sootball was gaining weight despite his controlled diet.
“Cheep~” Back in the sewing room, Sootball studied the patterns Lin Ran had drawn, then looked at the white fabric. Its purple aura flared, one strand manipulating the fabric, another operating the sewing machine. The magic control techniques Yuanbao had taught it were useful even for sewing.
At the village committee office, Lin Ran tried the fruit juice, a blend of several fruits and vegetables. It was surprisingly delicious.
“I would buy this,” he said.
“Right? It’s so good!” Jiang Jie agreed.
“But strangely, it only tastes this good with fruit from your orchard,” the developer said, puzzled. The team had been trying to understand the secret of Lin Ran’s produce. The quality was undeniably superior, but that didn’t explain the unique flavor. Had he added something special?
“Really? I’m not sure. I’ll look into it,” Lin Ran said, his response met with mixed reactions. Some thought he was genuinely unaware, others suspected a secret family recipe, or even good feng shui, though that didn’t explain his family’s past misfortunes.
“It’s a good thing. As long as Lin Ran is willing to supply us, we have a stable source. It’s like a trademark, preventing imitations,” Secretary Gu said, pleased.
“And we already have our first order! The film crew tried it and loved it. They’ve been ordering more,” Jiang Jie said excitedly. The crew members, from the city, had been impressed by their juice. The villagers were proud of their product.
Meanwhile, An Xun, on the film set, was drinking the juice with a strange expression.
“Don’t drink too much; it’s probably sugary,” his manager said, noticing his rapid growth. As a child star, growing up was a double-edged sword. Though An Xun had great potential, there was no guarantee his popularity would last.
“One more sip,” An Xun said, taking another large gulp, then staring at the juice. It tasted like the Golden Spirit Fruit from A-Ran’s garden, a unique sweetness. And his ear… he rubbed it; it seemed like his hearing was improving. He wondered when “Demon World” would finish updating.
Jiang Jie, meanwhile, was buying everything Lin Ran had ever wanted.
“Lin-zai, you can buy that new tricycle now! And a fancy cane for Grandma!”
“And a new sewing machine!” Lin Ran said, thinking that would be a better gift for Grandma.
But when he entered the sewing room, he found it a mess, fabric and cotton everywhere.
“Sootball? Where are you?” he called out.
“Cheep cheep!” Sootball’s head popped out from a pile of fabric.
It struggled free, dragging a small, white fluffball, and offered it to Lin Ran, its eyes shining.
Lin Ran examined the clumsily sewn fluffball, its stuffing spilling out, the eyes like a child’s drawing. It was undeniably endearing.
“Did you make this… me?” he asked. It resembled a small, white fluffball, though the eyes were a bit… abstract.
“Cheep!” Sootball nodded proudly. It was a gift for A-Ran.
“You’ve become a little tailor! You’re so clever!” Lin Ran said, touched. Downloading “Demon World” had been the best decision ever. He had never felt so loved.
“Cheep cheep!” Sootball offered to help make the other plushies.
With Sootball’s help, the plushie production sped up. Sootball used its magic to manipulate the fabric and thread, and Lin Ran did the finishing touches. A mountain of mini black fluffballs grew steadily.
“All done—!” Lin Ran said, stretching.
“Cheep cheep—!” Sootball mimicked him, making him chuckle. This game was amazing!
“Wait, how do I bring these back to the game?” he wondered.
[Hold the items while entering Immersive Mode. The system will determine their eligibility and charge a gold tax. Note: Items that disrupt game balance are prohibited… Players are responsible for all consequences, including permanent ban… ]
“The update is finished?” He checked his phone; the game icon was updated. Sootball flew over, looking at the screen.
“Sootball, shall we go back to ‘Demon World’?”
“Cheep!” Sootball nodded eagerly. It had been sad being left behind. But now, it could be with A-Ran even during updates! It loved “Demon World” now~
Lin Ran held Sootball and the basket of plushies and entered Immersive Mode. The dizziness was less intense now.
He checked if the plushies had made it.
[Beep—Luna Clan Plushies x28. Value: 100,000 gold. Tax: 10,000 gold.]
10,000 gold?! He almost logged out. He couldn’t afford that!
[Due to the update’s tax-free policy, your tax is 0 gold. Enjoy the game!]
He was relieved, feeling like he had earned 10,000 gold. This game was too generous!
[Beep—Version 3.0 update complete! Updated map and demon information. Players can now view exploration progress and demon types!][River of Demon Energy (Dried) teleport activated! Current restoration progress: 1%!]
He opened the map, now showing the entire demon world: the central plains, the eastern snow mountains, the western wetlands, some areas lit up, others still dark. He was in the central area: Initial Woodland, marked with a lion’s head, clearly Yuanbao’s territory. His house was at the edge, bordering other unknown territories. The ocean area was also partially lit up, marked with a merfolk symbol, likely Atylanthos and Ossi.
“And Atylanthos’s grandmother’s cove is marked too.” Even specific locations were recorded. And the cove was marked “Quest Incomplete.” He had triggered a new quest while taking Snowball there.
He also noticed a “Moonlight Forest” in the southwest, marked with the Luna Clan symbol. No wonder they had arrived so quickly; they were nearby.
“Cheep!” Sootball said, the other demons returning.
The quick update was due to the Luna Clan’s impatience. They had bombarded customer service, which had introduced a “Sponsorship Plan”: 1000 magic crystals to reduce the update time by 1 hour.
The other demons were outraged.
[This game is getting greedier! Asking us for money now?!][Don’t the ancient clans already sponsor the server?] Clans that contributed more received more points and better customer service, a well-known secret. This was why they accepted the powerful clans’ control over resource-rich territories. They were the “patrons” keeping “Demon World” running.
The human company behind “Demon World” was even more mysterious. Most demons didn’t know who managed the game’s core consciousness and maintained its real-world presence. But it was definitely staffed by demons; the mysterious administrator occasionally posted job openings on the forum, requiring both strong magic and computer skills, making many demons consider a career change.
But as they criticized the “Sponsorship Plan,” the progress bar filled rapidly.
[Which rich sucker is funding this?!][Why are there so many rich demons, and why can’t I be one of them?! Do you have so many crystals you don’t know what to do with them?!][Only a few clans have that kind of wealth. Who is it?!]
It was the Luna Clan, impatiently throwing money at the game. Being interrupted mid-cub-cuddles was unacceptable! They had shortened the 3-day update to a few hours.
[Beep—Thank you for your sponsorship! A gift from your cub awaits~] They received a notification about a gift. Suddenly, the game seemed less annoying.
“Cheep cheep—!” Sootball dragged the basket of plushies from the workshop.
The arriving Luna Clan demons stared at the basket of black fluffballs.
[Is that… me?!] The butler recognized his plushie, the only one with grey fur and a beard.
“Yes, it’s you. I made one for everyone who helped find me. Thank you for your time,” Lin Ran said, handing him the plushie, then distributing the others.
The Luna Clan demons looked at him, now back in his human form.
“I should clarify, I’m not a Luna Clan cub. I’m human,” he said, expecting them to be less enthusiastic now.
But their expressions turned even more complex.
[No, dear child, you’re a lost Luna Clan cub! This is just your human form!][He doesn’t even know basic common sense! So heartbreaking!][And he’s so cute in his human form too!] They felt even more protective of this “lost cub” with identity issues.
Meanwhile, on the “Demon World” forum, a new post appeared:
[We’re not suckers! Look who got a special, limited-edition, handmade gift! [screenshots]x9] The screenshots showed Luna Clan demons displaying plushies of their beast forms.
And a system message:
[This is a custom-made plushie crafted by A-Ran, a limited-edition gift for all Luna Clan members. Bound to character, untradable. One per demon. Lost items will not be replaced.]
The poster added:
[I’m hoping for another update. My crystals are ready. When’s the next sponsorship drive?]
The other demons: ???
[Are we playing the same game?! [Shocked goldfish.jpg]] If they had known about the gifts, they would have contributed too! Was this game rigged?!
The forum erupted in chaos.
I’m surprised that Lin Ran would allow the golden fruits to be used in the juice sold to others because, with their origins from the game, they should have some magical properties; unless he’s unaware of the village’s use of the golden fruits. Either way, hopefully An Xun will associate the golden fruits with Lin Ran and finally meet him in the human world.
Thanks for the chapter! 😀
