Chapter 40 Part 1
Zhou Yi froze.
Love? Bullshit love. Was love more important than academics?
Zhou Yi, tied up and sitting on the ground, his body shaking uncontrollably, spat at the little white snake. “Love-struck fool! Die! Just die!”
‘Zhou Yi, you’re dead! After Xi Xi wakes up, I’ll bite you to death,’ the little white snake turned to the little gray snake excitedly. ‘Xi Xi, that person called me a love-struck fool!’
Wu Heng: “…”
Li Hao and his friends had already moved into their rented apartment, a three-hundred-square-meter duplex villa near the school.
Li Hao was sprawled on the bed in the largest bedroom, rolling around and laughing as he watched the live stream.
“Hahaha, He Yunxiao must be furious! Serves him right!”
The live stream audience couldn’t hear the two snakes talking, but He Yunxiao could!
As Li Hao was laughing, he suddenly felt a chill and rolled off the bed, landing face down on the floor.
Li Hao, clutching his backside, climbed back onto the bed, rubbing his aching face, and sent a message in the group chat, tagging He Yunxiao.
[Group Owner – Li Hao: @He Yunxiao, your future son-in-law made me laugh so hard I fell off the bed.]
[He Yunxiao: [/smile] Get lost.]
“What’s wrong with this child? He never curses!” Mother Zhou looked at Zhou Yi, who was still cursing, her voice filled with anxiety.
Zhou Yi had always been a well-behaved child, never cursing, let alone telling people to die. This wasn’t like him at all.
[What’s wrong with this guy? His expression is so fierce, could he be possessed?]
[…Did anyone notice that everyone has a shadow, except him?]
[So creepy in the middle of the night, remembering that ghost wife sending wedding red packets last time, I’m leaving. Bye.]
[Something’s definitely not right, I’m also leaving, wishing him a speedy recovery.]
Many netizens in the fan group had witnessed firsthand the consequences of being too curious and absorbing Yin qi. Those who claimed the ghost marriage red packet had been drinking ginger water like it was plain water, reportedly recovering only in the past two days. Seeing this, afraid of being affected again, many left the live stream, the number of viewers decreasing drastically.
The little white snake, raising its body, stared at Zhou Yi with its scarlet eyes, seeing the black qi emanating from him, and said, ‘He’s possessed.’
Wu Heng was about to praise Da Bai’s observation skills when he saw it slither down from the consultation table, quickly pick up the feather duster, and charge towards Zhou Yi.
The little white snake shouted, ‘You’re finished, Zhou Yi, I’m taking revenge for you kicking me!’
But having no hands, it dropped the feather duster, which was slightly awkward.
Zhou Dagui, looking at Wu Heng, then at the spirited little white snake, picked up the feather duster and started whipping Zhou Yi.
Red welts appeared on his arms, Zhou Yi’s body shaking from the pain, his head thrashing around as he stuck out his tongue, reciting politics material for the college entrance exam:
“The core socialist values are prosperity, democracy, civilization, harmony, freedom, equality, justice…”
Even Zhou Dagui, the village chief, a staunch supporter of national policies, couldn’t continue hitting him.
This… this was so righteous it was evil!
Damn it, was he the one possessed, or were they?
The little white snake was shocked. When it tried to steal honey from the clinic, You Jin had beaten it with a feather duster until its soul almost left its body, what was wrong with Zhou Yi?
Misdiagnosis?
‘Godfather, should we pour medicine on his head?’ Xi Xi asked Wu Heng.
The medicinal power of herbs could force out evil spirits. This was a common technique Xi Xi saw Wu Heng use.
Wu Heng shook his head. “Go to his study and bring his study materials.”
Father Zhou immediately rushed home and returned with several stacks of materials in just a few minutes.
Wu Heng took the thickest textbook, a purple exam practice book, flipped through it, filled with answers, several pages torn out.
He went to the consultation table, took a white candle, lit it with the alcohol lamp, and started burning the book in front of everyone.
“Wu Heng, what are you doing?! These are A-Yi’s important study materials!” Mother Zhou exclaimed instinctively.
To a high school senior, these materials were incredibly important.
Then she realized this wasn’t about study materials, but about her son’s life.
[He’s really burning them? That must have taken him so long to write, all that hard work.]
[You don’t understand, I was almost driven mad during my senior year last year. Seeing those study materials, I just wanted to throw them away, burn them, rip them apart, luckily I pulled through.]
[I don’t understand young people these days. What’s wrong with working hard for the college entrance exam? We didn’t have the same opportunities back then, yet you’re still not satisfied, such weak mental fortitude.]
[It’s easy for the older generation who benefited from the good times to say that.]
Zhou Yi, still tied up, stared at the burning materials, cursing, “Wu Heng, you uneducated fool, don’t burn my study materials, don’t… stop! My materials…”
Wu Heng ignored him, extending his hand towards Zhou Yi’s parents, and Mother Zhou, suppressing her distress, handed him another book, watching as he continued burning them.
Zhou Yi continued cursing, but his voice grew weaker, a relieved smile appearing on his lips as he stared at the burning materials.
Wu Heng took the watering can from the counter and poured it over Zhou Yi’s head, the cold herbal liquid dripping down his face and neck.
Zhou Yi let out a cry, his body slumping to the ground, a shadowy figure appearing beside him.
“He has a shadow!” Mother Zhou exclaimed, her gaze fixed on her son as she noticed the shadow beneath him.
Wu Heng placed the watering can back on the table. “It’s done.”
[Doctor Wu is truly amazing, he can really exorcise evil spirits.]
[… I’m going to bed now, bye everyone. There’s a blurry shadow there, I’m scared!]
[So he was possessed? That ghost must have been harming him, should we destroy it?]
[A demonic possession can’t be a good thing, especially possessing a high school senior, that’s evil, just destroy it.]
“Should we find Grandma Lai and ask her to deal with this evil spirit?” Father Zhou whispered menacingly.
They now understood why their well-behaved son would suddenly try to jump off a building.
This almost cost Zhou Yi his life. This was attempted murder, they had to ask a practitioner to deal with it, to prevent it from harming other students.
‘Bullshit, I didn’t harm your son! If it weren’t for me, your son would be dead!’ the shadow shouted at Zhou Yi’s parents, lifting its head.
Zhou Dagui, the village chief, frowned, looking at the pale face.
Mother Zhou, gripping her son’s shoulders, retorted, “Nonsense! If it weren’t for you, why would our son jump?!”
‘Exactly! Why didn’t your son die from jumping?!’ the shadow shouted back defiantly, its body trembling.
This shaman doctor’s medicine was potent, it could only muster enough strength to curse, unable to even float.
Everyone was stunned.
Yes, falling from a five-story building should have been fatal or, at least, crippling. How was he unharmed?
Wu Heng sat down at the consultation table. “It actually saved Zhou Yi.”
Silence fell, a chilling realization dawning upon everyone.
What did that mean?
Zhou Yi, still sitting on the ground, fumbled for his glasses and put them on, then, staring at the burnt study materials, said, “I jumped myself.”
Everyone froze. Mother Zhou threw herself at him, crying, “You foolish child! What were you thinking?! How could you do such a thing?!”
Before, they could blame everything on the evil ailment, on the possessing spirit, but now, Zhou Yi had admitted it himself, he wanted to jump.
The shadow sneered. ‘Your son wanted to jump into the river! If it weren’t for me possessing him, his body would be bloated by now!
Zhou Yi had initially wanted to jump into the river. If it weren’t for its intervention, he would have been crushed. But even the shadow couldn’t understand how Zhou Yi survived the fall without a scratch.
Zhou Yi, his head lowered, muttered, “I couldn’t take it anymore, studying, my life was only about studying! I wanted to play soccer, but no, wait until after the college entrance exam. I wanted to watch a game, but no, studying is more important, no TV. I wanted to rest, but I had to practice my English listening skills with headphones on. Yes, I didn’t want to live anymore, I wished the funeral banquet was for me, not for Lai boy!”
Zhou Yi’s voice cracked as tears streamed down his face, his cries almost hysterical.
He envied Wu Heng, who could live freely.
Even after he recovered, Uncle Wu Su didn’t force him to go to school. Of course, if Wu Heng wanted to, Uncle Wu Su would support him, the choice was always his.
Mother Zhou, staring at her hysterical son, murmured, “We… we did it for your own good.”
Studying was the only way for ordinary people like them to escape poverty.
Zhou Yi shouted, “I know! Did I ever say I didn’t want to study?!”
He always knew the importance of education, but he was tired, so tired.
[He was definitely pressured too much. Watching a game wouldn’t have affected his studies.]
[Pay more attention to children’s mental health. I believe physical and mental well-being are the most important.]
[Too much pressure leads to tragedies. There have been several students in my area who jumped off buildings or into rivers because of academic stress.]
[So, this ghost is actually a good ghost? It saved a life?]
Wu Heng pondered for a moment and ended the live stream.
The couple sat there dumbfounded, not knowing what to say.
Zhou Dagui, however, made a decision. “A-Yi will stay home and rest for a while, I’ll personally go and ask the school for leave.”
Mother Zhou opened her mouth, then closed it without protesting.
She didn’t want to witness Zhou Yi jumping off a building again.
His life was more important than anything.
Zhou Dagui looked at Wu Heng. “Xiao Heng, can A-Yi stay at the clinic for a few days?”
