Chapter 6
One should never lie to a friend. The next morning, Bai Yan woke up to find that his punishment had arrived.
His illness had worsened without warning. His forehead was burning, and his head throbbed with waves of pain. His eyelids felt incredibly heavy, and his vision was blurry; everything he looked at had a double image.
The young man’s mind was hazy with fever. He wasn’t clear about anything, only remembering that he had to go downstairs for breakfast on time.
Bai Yan’s legs were weak. He shuffled downstairs in his plush cotton slippers, each step feeling as if he were treading on clouds.
If there had been another Omega or Alpha in the main house, they would have noticed that even the jasmine scent carried a faint, sickly undertone.
Chen Shulan was truly shocked when she saw Bai Yan’s flushed face. She knew without even taking his temperature that the young man had a high fever.
After checking his forehead, the housekeeper told Bai Yan with even more gravity that he was already at 38°C. This time, he couldn’t just brush it off. She would send someone to pick up the family doctor immediately.
The Omega blinked slowly, his mind foggy as he replied, “Okay, Auntie Chen.”
Even when he was at the orphanage, Bai Yan had always been an obedient child, and he was especially so when he was sick.
Hearing Auntie Chen’s instructions, he immediately brought his knees together, straightened his back, and sat with perfect posture, waiting obediently for the doctor to arrive.
The children at the orphanage all knew that it wasn’t easy for the doctor-aunties to come, so they couldn’t cause them any trouble.
Auntie Chen’s heart ached with both pity and sorrow. She told him to take the elevator back to his room to rest, that the family doctor would be there soon.
The Omega nodded obediently, his muddled brain only able to process simple commands.
When he got upstairs and sat properly on the edge of his bed, he felt his eyelids growing heavier and heavier…
My head is burning, but my body is so cold…
The young man unconsciously hugged his shoulders and curled up. His hair, damp with cold sweat, stuck to the side of his ear. His beautiful features were scrunched up in a frown, and his teeth, biting his lower lip, chattered slightly.
It was as if he had fallen into a bottomless pit of mud. He wanted to struggle free, but his body was drained of strength, unable to move.
The director’s gentle voice seemed to echo in his ears. The Omega’s brow was tightly furrowed, and physiological tears were forced from the corners of his eyes.
He whispered “Mama” a few times, but the voice seemed to grow more and more distant.
Sleepiness washed over him. Bai Yan could no longer distinguish anything. Like a falling leaf, he drifted lightly toward the carpet, his vision went black, and he finally lost consciousness completely.
The Bentley pulled up in front of the magnificent, platinum-white building. Pei Tingyu got out of the car, his leather shoes stepping slowly onto the marble tiles.
The Alpha’s handsome face was indifferent, his tall, perfect figure enveloped in a greatcoat and suit, his entire being exuding a piercingly cold and sharp aura. S-class bitter orange blossom pheromones swirled around him, his presence cool and distant.
The only thing that seemed out of place was the exquisite paper bag he carried, printed with a cartoon image of a fluffy rabbit.
“A-Yu!” Seeing Pei Tingyu enter, Chen Shulan lost her composure for a rare moment, her face etched with anxiety.
“A-Yan suddenly fell ill. He has a high fever now, and the family doctor’s car was in an accident on the way and can’t make it.”
“Don’t worry,” Pei Tingyu said, his brow slightly furrowed. He handed the bag to Assistant Song and strode toward the stairs. “Get the car ready for the hospital immediately. I’ll go up and see.”
Chen Shulan composed herself and turned to give the order. “Alright!”
“Woof woof woof!”
The man had just set foot on the stairs when the Doberman’s anxious barks suddenly rang out from the third floor. The Alpha’s face instantly darkened, and his steady footsteps on the stairs abruptly quickened.
Stepping into the suite’s bedroom, even someone as calm as Pei Tingyu felt his heart leap at the sight before him.
Bai Yan lay unconscious on the carpet.
The Omega’s frame was as thin as paper. Because of his fall, the hem of his sweater had ridden up, revealing a sliver of his slender waist, the paleness of his skin alarming.
The unconscious young man’s eyes were tightly shut, his forehead soaked with cold sweat. He looked like a magnolia branch trapped deep in the snow, lifeless.
“Woof—woof!” Oz paced anxiously around the young man, trying to nudge his body with his nose, but to no avail. Seeing his master, he finally found his savior and barked excitedly.
“Oz, calm down,” the man commanded with a cold face. He bypassed the agitated dog and walked quickly to Bai Yan’s side.
The tall Alpha bent down, his large hands scooping up the young man’s back and the crook of his knees, lifting him gently. The movement could almost be described as tender.
The young man was far too light. He felt weightless in his arms, as light as a feather. It was as if, with the slightest carelessness, he would float away from him.
The Omega’s head rested obediently against his chest, his snow-white hair messy on his forehead, his long, feathery eyelashes drooping listlessly.
His face was flushed from his high temperature, but his lips were completely devoid of color.
The long, slender neck, revealed by the collar of his sweater, was startlingly white. The young man looked like a sleeping beauty who would never wake. Only the faint, shallow breaths indicated that his heart was still beating.
Pei Tingyu’s heart skipped a beat. A strange, unfamiliar feeling suddenly washed over him.
The Alpha’s face darkened, a layer of frost quickly covering his eyes. The man looked straight ahead, striding down the stairs with the unconscious young man in his arms, and carefully placed him in the back seat of the Bentley.
Pei Tingyu’s expression was icy as he ordered in a deep voice, “To Erya. Tell them to be ready.”
Until Bai Yan was wheeled into the hospital’s emergency room, Pei Tingyu’s lips remained tightly pressed together as he waited outside the room in silence.
The light above the emergency room door switched from red to green, and a weary-looking doctor emerged.
Chen Shulan rushed forward, tears in her eyes, and looked at the young man with his eyes closed on the hospital bed, her heart filled with guilt and pain.
Although Bai Yan hadn’t been at Yǎyuán for long, she had grown to love this polite and sensible child from the bottom of her heart.
Moreover, she bore some responsibility for his fever and collapse this time.
Pei Tingyu pulled his gaze away from the young man’s peaceful, sleeping face and turned to the doctor who had just come out, his brow furrowed as he asked, “How is he?”
Li Xiaoxiao took off her mask and said seriously, “It’s acute inflammation caused by a common cold. Nothing too serious. We’ll need to observe him for the next few days. If his gland doesn’t get hot, it shouldn’t be a major problem. An IV drip and medication should be enough.”
“The patient has albinism, which makes his situation special. It’s a good thing he was brought in promptly, so no other symptoms developed. However, I recommend a full physical examination after he recovers.”
Pei Tingyu asked, “Then why hasn’t he woken up yet?”
Li Xiaoxiao replied, “It’s likely because the patient has been overly exhausted recently. He’ll wake up when he’s had enough sleep.”
“The patient needs to be admitted for further treatment. In Mr. Pei’s VIP room?”
As she said this, her serious expression finally broke into a teasing one, the gossip in her eyes unconcealed.
The young man’s bed had already been wheeled away. Having gotten the information he needed, Pei Tingyu had no intention of staying longer and strode toward the private elevator.
The female Alpha tutted, her thirst for gossip unsatisfied. She had no choice but to turn to the assistant waiting to handle the paperwork.
Li Xiaoxiao raised an eyebrow at Song Jian, a look of someone enjoying a good show on her face. “Did the sun rise in the west today? Where did the ever-uninterested ‘King of Hell’ Pei find such a beautiful little thing?”
She narrowed her eyes and stroked her chin. “I have a feeling you’re about to say that classic line.”
Before the Beta could answer, the Alpha cleared her throat and said in an exaggerated tone, “Mr. Pei, it’s been a long time since you’ve smiled like this.”
Song Jian replied, deadpan and by the book, “I’m afraid I’ll have to disappoint Dr. Li. Mr. Pei just smiled with satisfaction at the branch office manager last week because the branch’s performance had increased by several percentage points compared to the same quarter last year.”
Li Xiaoxiao was speechless.
Assistant Song, your deadpan humor is as cold as ever.
Erya Private Hospital, Inpatient Department
The VIP room was spacious and clean, the air filled with the pungent smell of disinfectant, which pushed even the faint scent of jasmine into the background.
On the bed in the center of the room, a white-haired young man lay quietly sleeping.
The young man’s palm-sized face was nestled in a sky-blue pillow. His features were delicate, but his brow was furrowed in unease, his sleep far from peaceful.
An IV needle was taped to the back of his hand, and the pale blue veins were clearly visible on his slender wrist.
The joints of his fingers were tinged with pink, which, in contrast to his pale skin, looked almost blood-red.
So fragile, yet so startling.
Pei Tingyu had the exhausted Chen Shulan go back to Yǎyuán to rest, while he stayed by the Omega’s bedside alone.
The man looked at the young man on the bed with a complicated expression, sighing almost imperceptibly to himself.
He was only gone for one business trip. How did the Omega manage to get himself hospitalized and unconscious?
Those cherry-pink eyes were now covered by heavy lids, their former liveliness gone.
The Alpha looked for a moment before politely averting his gaze and instructing Song Jian on his phone to handle the hospitalization procedures.
After he sent the message, he suddenly heard a soft sobbing. The Alpha looked up at the sound, stunned.
The small figure on the bed was curled up on his side, his body thin. The young man was still unconscious, perhaps having a nightmare, his hand clutching a corner of the quilt uneasily.
A faint blush tinged the corners of his eyes, and his long, light eyelashes trembled with his sobs.
Crystal-clear teardrops rolled from the tips of his lashes and, because he was on his side, pooled in the hollow of his nose.
Perhaps because he was used to not disturbing others, or perhaps because he felt insecure, even his sleeping sobs were extremely quiet, as soft as a whisper.
The man’s brow furrowed, then slowly relaxed.
He could guess why the young man felt so insecure.
An Omega who had grown up in an orphanage, just turned nineteen, suddenly had to move into a strange Alpha’s home, where he had to adapt to all new people and things.
And this Alpha was only his partner in name, having entered into a contract marriage with him only to fulfill an obligation. Even after getting married, who knew what he would face…
To be crying secretly in his dreams, he must have imagined it many times…
The man’s heart softened, his gaze suddenly darkening.
He could have chosen not to go to Shencheng.
The problem there was just troublesome, not serious. The collaboration with the Shencheng branch was already on track; his absence wouldn’t have caused any issues.
But when Song Jian had asked if he should go, the image of the young man’s lost and helpless eyes had flashed in his mind, and he had hesitated for a rare moment.
That night when he had told Bai Yan about the plan to register the marriage, the Omega’s face had been filled with nervousness and shock. Although he had tried his best to hide his panic, he was still like an open book in front of the Alpha.
In the end, even Pei Tingyu himself wasn’t sure if he really needed to be in such a hurry.
He had originally intended to use the business trip to give them both some time to adjust.
But now, Pei Tingyu didn’t even need to guess. The young man had probably fallen ill from anxiety over the impending marriage.
Perhaps for him, suddenly having to marry a strange Alpha also required mental preparation.
A look of helplessness appeared in the man’s eyes. He sighed softly to himself, his magnetic voice low and gentle. “If I had known this would happen, I should have just gone to register the marriage back then.”
Perhaps if you had gotten the marriage certificate sooner, you wouldn’t have gotten sick from overthinking.
The sleeping young man couldn’t possibly respond. His crying gradually subsided, but the tears at the corners of his eyes continued to fall like a broken string of pearls.
Pei Tingyu reached out a hand. After a few seconds of hesitation, it finally landed on its destination.
His fingertips touched the young man’s cheek. The sensation was incredibly soft.
The man’s movements paused for a moment, then, without any ulterior motive, he gently wiped away the two crystal-clear drops of moisture.
The motion was as gentle as wiping the morning dew from a delicate flower petal.
The Alpha gently pulled the corner of the quilt from the Omega’s grasp, took his cool hand, and tucked it deep into the warm covers, carefully tucking the quilt in around him.
The man’s gentle whisper echoed in the quiet room. “Don’t cry anymore. Sleep well.”
The reassuring scent of bitter orange blossom was released, gradually blending with the scent of jasmine.
The S-class pheromones were no longer aggressive, silently embracing the Omega on the hospital bed.
The young man’s breathing evened out, his tightly furrowed brow slowly relaxed, and he sank into a deep sleep in the scent of orange blossom.
It was a good dream.
