Chapter 66: The Illusion
The fiery red sun slowly sank below the horizon. The sky, a vast expanse of orange, red, yellow, blue, and purple, was gradually swallowed by black.
Before the night had completely fallen, the moon had eagerly jumped out, occupying a corner of the sky. But then it was covered by dark clouds, obscuring the last bit of faint light in the sky.
Sitting in his baby chair, Nuonuo held his little spoon and ate with great joy.
Today’s soup was fermented rice balls, sweet and fragrant. The little rice balls inside were Q-bouncy and chewy, which made Nuonuo can’t help but scoop up one spoonful after another.
With soup all around his mouth, Nuonuo even tilted his little face up and told his brother to eat quickly too. “Eat, ya. So yummy!”
Fei Jing was staring blankly, lost in thought. Hearing Nuonuo’s loud, milky voice, he finally came back to his senses. “I know. You worry so much, aren’t you afraid you won’t grow tall?”
Nuonuo pouted and whimpered a couple of times. “I won’t! I eat a lot, so I’ll grow tall, tall!”
Fei Luo also nodded his head, looking like a complete “little brother fan.” “Little brother will grow tall.”
Fei Jing turned his face slightly, glanced at Fei Luo, who was putting food on Nuonuo’s plate, and just let out a light “hmph,” not bothering to argue.
“Little Fei Luo, how about we do something big tonight?”
Just as Fei Luo was about to go out and play with the finished Nuonuo, Fei Jing leaned against his chair and said with a raised eyebrow.
But Fei Luo only paused his steps slightly, a hint of confusion in his big eyes. He turned his head and ran straight away.
Fei Luo knew his second brother’s personality all too well. What big thing? It was probably just staying up late at night again, wanting to pull him along to gossip.
Fei Luo had just finished his final exams and was finally on vacation. He had to make time to play with his little brother and had no time to listen to his second brother’s nonsense.
And so, the on-vacation Fei Luo and Nuonuo played wildly until the middle of the night. When Fei Zhiyan, who had come back from working overtime, saw them, he picked them up one in each hand and threw them into their bedrooms.
Knowing that his papa was angry, Nuonuo was immediately as good as he could be. He shrank his little shoulders and lay on the bed, pretending that the one who had been playing crazily just now was not him.
“You know how to pretend to be good now.”
Fei Zhiyan pushed up his glasses with his fingertips, his tone tinged with a bit of helplessness.
The longer they got along, the more Fei Zhiyan felt that this little one was becoming more and more lawless. He also knew that he was spoiling him, so he was crazily treading on Fei Zhiyan’s bottom line.
Fei Zhiyan looked at the little one on the bed, who was secretly peeking at him with one little eye and then quickly closing it to pretend to be asleep. He couldn’t help but sigh lightly. “Go to sleep now. I have some things to deal with in the study.”
Leaving a small night light on, before Fei Zhiyan could even walk out the door, he heard Nuonuo’s even breathing.
With a helpless curl of his lips, Fei Zhiyan walked slowly to the study and, sure enough, saw that Fei Han was already waiting there.
“Father.”
Something had happened to Nuonuo today, and Fei Han had been somewhat absent-minded ever since. Looking at the dark night outside the window, he was even in a rare daze.
“I know everything about what happened today.”
The expression on Fei Zhiyan’s face was a few shades darker than the inky black night outside. Thinking of the soft white little dumpling on the bed, his eyes were filled with a cold chill.
“Don’t let Fei Jing go.”
Fei Zhiyan’s fingers tapped lightly on the desk. Suddenly thinking of something, he spoke up.
Today’s incident had come suddenly, but after a little thought, he knew that that person had definitely been eyeing Nuonuo for a long time. If it weren’t for Zhou Xiaole changing into Nuonuo’s clothes by a strange twist of fate, the one who would have been covered in injuries today would have been that soft little one.
At the thought of coming home from work today and seeing the pitiful little silly fish lying on the bed with tears in his eyes, saying he was in pain, Fei Zhiyan’s heart twitched with pain.
Before, he had been cold and heartless, thinking that there was no one or nothing in this world that he would care about. He had always been decisive and ruthless in his actions, even not caring if someone would come for revenge.
But now, knowing that there was a biological little merman at home, who was eagerly waiting for him to come home every day, Fei Zhiyan felt his heart inexplicably soften. Even his usual ruthless style seemed to have been put in a heavy shackle, making him feel constrained.
If it had been before, with Fei Zhiyan’s ruthless nature, the pit that old man Grandpa Gu had dug would have probably already been dug. But now, he had more scruples and had to be more cautious and think further ahead.
And that Grandpa Gu was clearly on the same side as those outsiders. These people had appeared again and again, like buzzing flies in the summer. Although you knew they existed, you couldn’t just swat them dead in a short while.
But to endure these disgusting flies, Fei Zhiyan was also unwilling. It was better to pull out the radish and bring out the mud, to catch them all in one go.
Fei Zhiyan didn’t even want to know what their purpose was or why they had come here. He just wanted to crush these small fries as soon as possible.
So Fei Jing couldn’t go. He was the most impulsive one in the Fei family, and his actions were sometimes even more ruthless than Fei Zhiyan’s. If he went, that old man Grandpa Gu probably wouldn’t even have his ashes left.
Hearing his father’s words, Fei Han understood his meaning. He frowned slightly and, after opening his mouth, said, “But he’s already gone.”
And he took Fei Luo with him.
Tonight was unusually quiet, without even a hint of a breeze. The stuffy heat made one feel irritable.
In the small house of the Lei family, Gu Ze took out his small box, poured out the contents onto the bed, and began to count them seriously one by one.
Most of them were small coins of fifty cents and one yuan, with an occasional larger denomination, which would be taken out by Gu Ze and put aside separately.
In total, it was one hundred and eighty-two yuan, the result of Gu Ze’s savings for almost half a year. It was also the private money he had hidden in a panic after his grandfather had become strange on that rainy night.
He didn’t really know why he had done it. Before, when he lived with his grandfather, Gu Ze had never hidden anything. In fact, seeing his grandfather’s stooped back, he would even feel sad. But now, he rarely had this kind of emotion. In fact, this afternoon, when he saw his grandfather at the entrance of the Gu family’s villa, Gu Ze had even defensively stood closer to Nuonuo.
At that time, he had suddenly seen the angry and panicked look in his grandfather’s eyes as he looked at Nuonuo, and he felt that this person was really a stranger.
So strange that only his face was familiar to Gu Ze.
“Knock, knock. Little Ze, are you asleep?”
A knock came from outside the door. Gu Ze subconsciously hid the organized money in a small cabinet and then slowly walked over to open the door for his grandfather.
“Grandpa.”
Gu Ze pursed his lips slightly, his gaze slightly averted, not meeting his grandfather’s.
Grandpa Gu, on the other hand, rubbed Gu Ze’s little head with his rough, large hand. Seeing the neat and tidy state of Gu Ze’s bedroom, he couldn’t help but nod.
When it came to this male lead, Grandpa Gu was very satisfied. Although he was only a little over three, he was already very neat and proper in his work, not like other children who would cry and act spoiled. On the contrary, he could even help with cooking and cleaning. At such a young age, one could already glimpse his future maturity and steadiness.
No wonder he could become the male lead. He really is different from ordinary children.
Grandpa Gu sat down on the edge of the bed with a hunched back. Perhaps because he had exercised too much during the day, he coughed a couple of times before he spoke. “Little Ze, although we’ve had a hard life, we’ve met many kind people along the way. This world has ultimately been kind to us…”
Gu Ze sat on the small stool, and hearing his grandfather start to say these things again, his pursed lips became a straight line. He really disliked these kinds of words, which were full of chicken soup and positive energy. He clenched his little hands on the corner of his clothes and listened in silence, enduring the discomfort.
After finishing his daily brainwashing education, Grandpa Gu returned to his room, satisfied, completely unaware of the annoyance in Gu Ze’s eyes. He felt that his education was still very successful. As long as he said these words to Gu Ze day after day, he could always teach him to be a more upright and kind person than in the original plot.
Although the matter of driving a wedge between Gu Ze and Fei Nuo had not succeeded today, no matter what, as long as Gu Ze became strong first, he could always kill these villains first.
By then, the mission would be successful, and a large number of points and energy would be his.
This was also the reason why Grandpa Gu had not cooperated with others. Monopolizing and sharing, the former was definitely more tempting. If he formed a team with those people, not only would he be dragged down, but he would also have to share his points with them for nothing after he succeeded.
Grandpa Gu had recently heard about the situation of the other transmigrators. The largest team, with dozens of people, were all veteran transmigrators, and yet they were still beaten by Fei Zhiyan.
A total of twenty of them had come, which was almost the upper limit that a world could bear for outsiders. Any more, and the world’s will would definitely notice and directly expel them.
Besides the ten who were obstructing Fei Zhiyan’s plan in Daizhou, the other twenty were all fighting on their own.
Everyone had their own plans, but they would also learn some news from each other to avoid any unexpected situations with the villains or the protagonist.
In Grandpa Gu’s opinion, those ten people were already done for. To dare to fight the biggest villain, Fei Zhiyan, head-on, wasn’t that just purely brain-dead?
It was much safer to take Gu Ze’s path. Even if the world really became a mess in the later stages, as Gu Ze’s only relative, he would still live peacefully until the end.
At this thought, Grandpa Gu’s heart also relaxed a lot, and he put today’s matter behind him.
Pouring himself a cup of hot tea, Grandpa Gu was about to lie down on the bed to enjoy it for a while when he saw a bolt of lightning suddenly flash across the sky outside.
That bolt of lightning, which could split the sky, seemed to have landed right outside his window, making the window start to buzz.
The hot tea in Grandpa Gu’s hand trembled, and a few drops of scalding water spilled out. He didn’t even bother with his scalded skin and looked out the window with a bit of worry.
Such a big thunder, will there be a storm later?
Just as he was thinking of going to Gu Ze’s room to see if he had closed his window properly, to show his kindness and tenderness, but just as Grandpa Gu stood up, he suddenly heard the panicked voices of people from outside.
“There are zombies! Help!”
“Ahhh! The monsters are coming! Don’t bite me!”
The window below seemed to have become a noisy vegetable market, filled with people’s terrified screams.
Grandpa Gu’s heart suddenly tightened. How is that possible?! How could zombies appear so quickly?!
Fei Han would at the earliest be able to develop the zombie liquid in two years. And no matter how he thought about it, those villains couldn’t have launched an attack so suddenly, right?!
But, Grandpa Gu then thought of them, these transmigrators, and his heart skipped a beat.
Could it be that Fei Zhiyan’s side has sensed something and has started his apocalypse plan early?!
