Chapter 29 Part 1
“Why didn’t you say so earlier?!”
They said doctors were benevolent, they said doctors shouldn’t interfere in patients’ family affairs, but Wu Heng did!
Wu Heng wasn’t bound by the rules of modern doctors; he was a shaman doctor who followed his own path.
Illnesses, he treated. People, he also dealt with.
Mrs. Wang sat on the ground, muttering He Yunxiao’s earlier words. “Genetic disease? All that genetic disease nonsense is just a lie! Just doctors making things up to cheat people out of their money.”
Shi Xuan, pondering He Yunxiao’s words, glanced at him. No wonder his grades were so poor, he probably failed biology.
He Yunxiao looked bewildered.
Wu Heng also expressed his curiosity. “What are genes? Where can I learn about this?”
Although he was trained in ancient shamanic medicine, Wu Heng was eager to learn about modern medicine. Learning more wouldn’t hurt. His curiosity about modern medical surgeries had reached its peak.
Shi Xuan, seeing Wu Heng’s genuine eagerness to learn, twitched the corner of his lips slightly.
His studious appearance… was rather cute.
“I can teach you biology,” Shi Xuan said, then added, “If you want to learn.”
He Yunxiao, Li Hao, and the others, usually so eager to argue, were now united in their silence.
When it came to academics, no one in their school dared to challenge Shi Xuan.
Wu Heng didn’t quite understand what they meant by “genes.” Looking at Mrs. Wang, shaking her head in disbelief, he asked pointedly, “You aborted several female fetuses before having your son, didn’t you?”
Mrs. Wang was struck dumb, ignoring the pain in her soul, she shouted, “No! Don’t talk nonsense!”
Wu Heng scoffed. “Lying to a doctor is unwise. Both of you gave me your birth dates.”
He knew just by taking their pulses remotely, let alone observing their faces and birth charts. Even Chen Zhao could tell what Mrs. Wang’s children’s palace (an area of the face in Chinese face reading related to offspring) looked like.
The graduate student was silent for a moment, then interjected, “I heard from my deceased grandparents that my mother did have a few miscarriages before I was born, all girls.”
Wu Heng shattered Mrs. Wang’s illusions. “Even if there’s a 99% chance of having a healthy grandson, Heaven can make your family that 1%.”
With that, he pointed at the sky.
This was indeed a matter of probability, but Heaven could make you that unlucky 1%!
[…So this is retribution? I just said, based on what He Yunxiao said about genetic diseases, there’s still a chance of being healthy. But if it’s Heaven’s will, then there’s nothing to be done.]
[If someone else said that, you might still take a chance, but since it’s Wu Heng, what’s the point of even trying?]
[The old woman’s world has crumbled, I’m so happy.]
[So Heaven is watching. There are so many strange illnesses nowadays, everyone should do more good deeds. My neighbor from over a decade ago gave birth to a baby girl without an anus. They threw her into the river, and then they both got electrocuted while showering together. Probably retribution.]
[Heng Heng hubby, is there really a Heaven?]
Mrs. Wang sat on the ground, wailing and wiping her tears. “I did it for the Wang family! I did it for A-Lang!”
Wang Lang, having suffered through his mother’s actions, said with annoyance, “I’m very busy with my research, Mom, can you stop this nonsense? Since you disapprove of her, I’ll take Xiao Rou to the city, the university has assigned me an apartment, it’s big enough.”
Mrs. Wang, tears still streaming down her face, forgetting about her dream of a grandson, stared at Wang Lang in disbelief. “You’re taking her to live in the city? She’s a high school dropout from the countryside, what would she do at a university?”
“After she gives birth, I’ll enroll her in an adult undergraduate program to improve her education,” Wang Lang frowned, stopping his mother before she could protest further. “Don’t tell me it’s a waste of money, a better educated mother is good for our Wang family, good for me.”
Mrs. Wang was speechless, dumbfounded. Those words… why did they sound so familiar?
Weren’t those her own words? Her son was simply repeating them back to her…
So she was going to live alone in the countryside? No grandson, no daughter-in-law to take care of her, even ridiculed by the villagers because of this incident?
Mrs. Wang’s heart sank.
[Hahaha, fighting fire with fire, look at the old woman’s defeated expression.]
[So it’s still important to study, it seems this graduate student also changed his way of thinking after leaving the village for his education.]
[This kind of mother needs her own son to deal with her. She’ll become a lonely old woman in the countryside, lol.]
Wang Lang couldn’t help but glance at his wife’s pregnant belly, feeling a surge of gratitude.
He was the first in their village to obtain a graduate degree, bringing honor to his family, and their living conditions had improved significantly over the years.
But if what Wu Heng said was true, a sickly son destined to die young would be a devastating blow to their family, both emotionally and financially. They could lose everything they had worked for.
His wife wasn’t the jinx his mother claimed her to be, she was clearly a blessing!
After years of studying and conducting research, Wang Lang knew that having many sons wasn’t as important as leaving his mark on the world of science.
A name recorded in history would be remembered and honored by future generations, who needed sons to visit their graves? Who would even remember him after three generations? It was all just outdated tradition!
Wang Lang, supporting his wife, asked with concern, “Doctor Wu Heng, my mother’s actions these past few days, will they affect the pregnancy? My wife hasn’t been eating much tonight.”
Wu Heng looked at the pregnant woman, her face rosy, her eyes sparkling, no longer as cautious as during their first connection, seemingly relieved.
Wu Heng smiled and nodded. “No, she’s just worried about your condition, that’s why she’s eating less. Just take good care of her.”
Wu Heng could tell from their faces that they were a couple from the village who married through an arranged meeting. There wasn’t much love between them initially, but after this incident, their relationship seemed to have improved. They would have a harmonious family life.
Ordinary people’s love inevitably involved considerations of money and practicalities, far less pure than the love of wealthy families, but a harmonious marriage was already considered a good fortune.
Wang Lang nodded repeatedly. “Thank you, Doctor Wu Heng, I’ll send you a small gift later, a token of my appreciation.”
Although they were patients at Wu Heng’s free clinic, and follow-up consultations were free, Wang Lang felt that, unlike Wang Qiang, the high school student, he was a working adult and should show his gratitude.
Except for the devastated and miserable Mrs. Wang, everyone in Wang family village was in a good mood tonight.
As they ended the call, an account named “Happy Retirement” gifted Chengde Medical Clinic five Carnivals.
Sharp-eyed netizens immediately laughed upon seeing the ID.
[Hahaha, the educated son knows how to deliver a psychological blow, he’s using his crazy mother’s account to gift Heng Heng, isn’t he?]
[Happy Retirement, pfft, I’m dying of laughter, her retirement will definitely be happy.]
[He’s using his mom’s money to gift the streamer? Happy retirement? After what she did, there’s no way she’ll have a happy retirement. I’m most vengeful during pregnancy and postpartum confinement, that old woman is done for.]
[After all, she’s someone who aborted so many babies that even Heaven couldn’t stand it and punished her.]
Li Hao, shoving He Yunxiao aside with his butt, placed several plates of freshly baked pastries in front of Wu Heng. “Doctor Wu, treating illnesses must be tiring, have some pastries. These pastries are made by a descendant of an imperial chef.”
Wang Dong brought over a pot of sweet tea and poured it for Wu Heng attentively.
He Yunxiao was almost knocked off his feet by Li Hao, luckily Xi Xi quickly grabbed his arm.
Before He Yunxiao could get angry, the little white snake darted out and hissed furiously at Li Hao and his friends.
He Yunxiao’s alarm bells went off again.
What was going on?
Why was this little white snake raised by Doctor Wu Heng so hostile towards him?
Besides Xi Xi, he had never been liked by snakes before!
He Yunxiao looked at Xi Xi, who was accepted by his entire family, then at the little white snake, its flattering demeanor evident even in its hissing, and had a very bad feeling.
Wu Heng wasn’t particularly hungry but was quite interested in the Beijing pastries, even more so after hearing they were made by a descendant of an imperial chef.
He Yunxiao gritted his teeth, looking at the smug Li Hao and his friends. These social-climbing bastards!
Chen Zhao was deep in thought: “?”
Wasn’t he the one who did the suturing? The one who did all the work? Wu Heng only moved his lips.
He was the one who worked hard!
Seeing no one offer him anything, Chen Zhao helped himself to a few pastries, even pocketing some.
“Doctor Wu Heng, aren’t you ending the stream yet?”
Wu Heng, eating a pastry, smiled. “No rush.”
8 p.m. on the Hungry Ghost Festival was the time with the most ghosts and demons, but closer to midnight, when the gates of hell opened, was when the most malicious ghosts appeared.
Many malicious ghosts roamed the human world and would take advantage of the chaos during the Hungry Ghost Festival, when the Yin messengers were overwhelmed, to try and escape.
[Wu Heng is so nice, spending the Hungry Ghost Festival with us. I feel less scared watching his live stream.]
[Wu Heng eats so fast, but his mannerisms are so refined and cute. When I eat delicious food, I just inhale it, cries]
[Why is that tallest guy staring at Heng Bao?]
Wu Heng looked up at Shi Xuan, who was staring intently at him, unable to decipher his thoughts. “Do you… want this pastry?”
Wu Heng glanced at the plate and glared at Chen Zhao. “How many did you steal?!”
Chen Zhao looked surprised. “Young Master Li, Young Master Wang, and Young Master Huang didn’t say I couldn’t take any.”
Chen Zhao felt a sense of happiness working under Wu Heng. There really was a place where he could eat while working?
Shi Xuan shook his head, he didn’t like sweets, he just thought Wu Heng was… cute.
Ruthless and sharp as a blade in the snow one moment, soft and sweet as cheese the next.
To him, everyone was essentially the same as talking corpses, only Wu Heng was vibrantly alive.
Such an interesting friend.
