Chapter 62 Part 2
The high school boys, remembering their evening self-study session, were quickly eating the hot pot while watching the scene unfold.
Shi Xuan, holding his chopsticks, noticed Wu Heng’s gaze and, startled, placed the piece of meat in Wu Heng’s bowl, “Want more?”
Li Hao and his friends, looking at the unconscious Yuan Song on the floor, saw a faint shadow emerge from his body and wailed, “We’re doomed now! A dead body in our apartment! This is a haunted house now! I don’t want to live here anymore!”
Tang Xueshan, looking at his soul form in disbelief, ‘How… how did you die? A heart attack?’
Su Chenyu, a medical student, checked his pulse, “There’s still a faint heartbeat.”
So, was he dead or alive?
Confused, they turned to Wu Heng, who, looking away from Shi Xuan, at Yuan Song, said, “He’s not dead, his soul was summoned by the underworld.”
Wu Heng continued, “Yuan Song, answer the video call, that’s your online job interview.”
They stared at his phone on the floor, the screen flashing, but there was no caller ID.
Yuan Song’s soul, still disoriented from being summoned for the first time, quickly regained his composure after hearing Wu Heng’s words and answered the call. The image on screen was dark and eerie, sending a chill through everyone present.
The screen was filled with a faint fog, the figures behind it difficult to see, yet a coldness spread through the room, their hearts pounding.
Yuan Song’s soul, holding the phone, went to another room for his interview.
They looked at each other. After a while, Su Chenyu murmured, “Isn’t this… BOSS Zhipin?” (a job recruitment app in China)
He Yunxiao was surprised, “So fast?”
Hadn’t Wu Heng just burnt the application?
Even he had expected a three-day wait. This was almost instantaneous.
Wu Heng looked at Shi Xuan, his usual calm demeanor, and finally understood how Chen Zhao felt. He said earnestly, “Good brother, don’t forget me when you’re rich and powerful.”
He had a suspicion that the expedited delivery wasn’t the only reason for the quick response, Shi Xuan’s recommendation must have played a significant role.
Shi Xuan chuckled, “How could I forget you?”
The little white snake, perched on the dining table, was ecstatic, as expected of its discerning eye, its godfather was truly remarkable.
Only Tang Xueshan, her attention divided between Yuan Song’s soul during his interview and his still breathing body on the floor, was frantic.
The others, knowing he wasn’t dead, continued eating.
When they were almost finished, Yuan Song’s soul emerged from the room, his pale face breaking into a faint smile as he met Tang Xueshan’s anxious gaze. ‘I got the offer, Intern Yin Messenger! One year internship, possible full-time position after. Unpaid, no benefits, due to the special nature of the job.’
014, standing by the window, his uniform fluttering in the wind, was stunned. ‘What? He got the job?! Don’t they usually have a waiting period?‘
Had it even been an hour?!
Yuan Song, looking at the black-robed Yin messenger, ‘You must be Senior 014. My superiors want you to mentor me. Also, they asked me to remind you to work hard and meet your quota this month.’
014: ‘…’
Holy crap, now they were even colleagues?
He ignored his last sentence.
“What’s that in Yuan Song’s hand?” Su Chenyu noticed something, stepping forward to gently pry open his warm hand.
They saw what he was holding.
Paper effigies!
A black robe, hat, shoes, lantern, and a soul-snatching rope, all made of paper.
Yuan Song looked slightly surprised, they provided the uniform, even after listing such harsh conditions.
Lower your expectations and even small perks seem like a blessing.
Wu Heng burnt the paper uniform with a white candle, and a set of clothes appeared in Yuan Song’s hands. He immediately put it on, almost indistinguishable from a real Yin messenger uniform, even hiding the fact that he was still alive.
Only subtle details differentiated an intern’s from 014’s.
Tang Xueshan, both happy and sad, floated around Yuan Song, admiring his new attire.
Her little sun, who would only see the moon from now on.
‘Ready to reincarnate now?’ Yuan Song asked softly, stroking her hair.
Tang Xueshan, smiling, nodded.
Turning to everyone, she bowed deeply to Wu Heng. ‘Thank you, Doctor Wu, for the Yin-nourishing medicine, I can finally go in peace. Thanks to you.’
‘When I get there, I’ll promote Chengde Medical Clinic, make it famous throughout the underworld!’
‘And have Yuan Song pay you when he wakes up.’
Wu Heng smiled, nodding, not refusing the payment.
Tang Xueshan then turned to Li Hao, Wang Dong, and the Black Hairs, a hint of apology in her eyes, ‘Sorry for intruding and weakening your Yang qi. Thank you for letting me stay.’
Tang Xueshan, scratching her head, feeling that just words weren’t enough, but since they were all rich, she couldn’t offer them money like she did with Wu Heng, she had a sudden inspiration, ‘I was a novelist when I was alive, how about this, when I get there, I’ll write a novel for each of you, you as the main characters. You all have names perfect for supporting characters or villains, I’ll let you experience being the protagonist, how about that?’
Li Hao and his friends’ smiles froze, “?”
They cried out in unison, “Ghost Sister, isn’t that revenge, not a reward?! You write romance, don’t you? We’re straight!”
Tang Xueshan reportedly specialized in stories about two men in love, and they shuddered at the thought of their names used for characters kissing and being in love.
Everyone else, amused by their reaction, started laughing.
Xi Xi, who had been quietly resting in He Yunxiao’s hands, suddenly said, her voice soft and sweet, ‘Big Author Sister, not all ghosts in the underworld have smartphones, you’ll need a good job to get one, then you can contact Uncle Yin Messenger.’
Tang Xueshan’s eyes lit up. So they could still meet, even chat online?
Life in the afterlife wasn’t so bad then.
Tang Xueshan looked at Xi Xi gratefully. ‘Thank you, sweet little snake.’
Xi Xi flicked its tongue, then, promoting her favorite teacher, ‘Author Sister, Teacher Yang has been studying pure love novels lately, he can be your first reader!’
Everyone: “…”
Indeed, Teacher Yang’s devoted student.
Li Hao, after a moment of thought, said, “Since Yuan Song is becoming an Yin messenger, you can still see each other often, right? Just focus on writing, Ghost Sister, and if there’s anything Yuan Song can’t help you with, just tell us, after all, we were roommates, money talks.”
Having lived together for so long, they felt a strange sense of reluctance now that she was leaving.
She was a ghost, yes, but besides that, not very scary.
Tang Xueshan smiled and nodded. She, an introverted, socially awkward writer, had unexpectedly made so many friends after her death. This life wasn’t entirely a waste.
Tang Xueshan turned to the newly appointed Yin Messenger, her pale face beaming, no fear in her eyes, ‘Master, please guide me to the underworld, I’ll give you a five-star review.
Yuan Song, holding his soul-snatching rope, took her hand, just like when they went for walks together, and smiled, ‘Let’s go.’
The road to the underworld was long and arduous, but with him by her side, it would be a journey through a field of flowers.
Yin Messenger 014 watched as his new intern, Xiao Yuan, escorted Tang Xueshan away.
He was completely confused, ‘???’
Seriously? Personally escorting her?
Not only wasn’t Yuan Song dead, he had even become his intern, and now he couldn’t even take Tang Xueshan.
Why was it that whenever Wu Heng was involved, his merit points vanished?
014 glared at Wu Heng, his dead fish eyes filled with conflicting emotions, his Yin qi intensifying.
Shi Xuan, sensing this, stepped in front of Wu Heng. 014, suddenly pulling out his tablet, checked his work records, a satisfied, lazy grin appearing on his face, ‘Heh, I met my quota this month, no need to worry about being fired, I’m taking an early leave.’
