Chapter 65: Uninvited Guest
Luo Jing’s father was on a business trip, so only Luo Feng and Lin Xue were at home.
Having suddenly learned that her youngest son was coming home today, Lin Xue had bought groceries in the afternoon and brought three helpers to the kitchen, preparing to cook a feast.
Especially since Luo Jing hadn’t eaten well abroad and had even lost some weight. Not to mention that he had been sent to Huai Dan’s place shortly after returning—she didn’t even know if he had been eating properly these past few days.
He needed to be properly nourished.
Thinking this, hearing the sound of a car at the door, Lin Xue put down the apple she was cutting.
The door opened, and her daughter was standing with her back to her, her son and Xiao Huai standing together.
For some reason, none of them were speaking.
But she didn’t sense the subtle atmosphere and said with a smile, seeing them, “Xiao Huai is here too! Would you like to stay for dinner? I made a lot of food today.”
She hadn’t had a chance to look closely at the reception, so she looked at Luo Jing again and, seeing no change in him, even looking a bit healthier, figured he must have been doing well recently.
So Lin Xue looked at Huai Dan, her smile deepening: “Thank you for taking care of him recently.”
Huai Dan looked at her and nodded politely: “Hello, Auntie, it wasn’t any trouble.”
Lin Xue nodded, then said, “What are you all doing standing at the door? Come in… Xiao Huai, you can park your car in the garage, no need to park on the street. Your uncle isn’t home recently, so there’s a free spot.”
“Mom…” Luo Feng looked at her, about to say something, then hesitated.
Then she looked at Luo Jing.
Luo Jing silently turned his head.
Luo Feng: “…”
“What’s wrong, Xiao Feng?” Lin Xue asked with concern, seeing her strange expression.
“Nothing,” Luo Feng forced a smile. “Yeah, why are we standing here? Come in.”
Then she looked at her friend, hoping for his usual sense of boundaries.
But his sense of boundaries seemed to have disappeared today.
“Okay,” Huai Dan replied after a pause.
Dinner wasn’t ready yet, and Lin Xue went back to the kitchen to supervise, so the three of them sat on the sofa in silence.
After Luo Feng sat down on the single-seater sofa, she watched as Huai Dan sat down next to Luo Jing, the distance between them practically zero.
Luo Feng: “…”
She instinctively glanced at Huai Dan, a strange feeling in her heart.
Then she noticed that he looked perfectly natural, as if he didn’t think there was anything wrong with sitting so close to Luo Jing.
So, thinking about their relationship, she felt even more sorry for Huai Dan.
She looked at Luo Jing meaningfully.
First at him, then at Huai Dan, then at the space between them.
Her meaning: You, stay away from him.
But Luo Jing suddenly took out his phone, opened a file, and showed it to Huai Dan: “Brother, can you take a look at this document? See if there are any problems.”
“I was supposed to give it to you tomorrow, but I won’t be at the company tomorrow.”
“Hmm?” Huai Dan looked over, his voice calm. “Let me see.”
Luo Jing placed his phone between them, and they both stared at the small screen. From Luo Feng’s perspective, their hair was practically intertwined.
And no one but her seemed to think it was strange.
Luo Feng: “…”
She had never seen Huai Dan so close to anyone before.
Not even her own brother.
Even if the person sitting there wasn’t Huai Dan, this distance was still too close, exceeding the normal social distance. She felt even she couldn’t get this close to Luo Jing without feeling awkward.
At this moment, Luo Feng suddenly felt that it wasn’t entirely her brother’s fault for falling for Huai Dan.
A familiar sense of helplessness rose in her heart. She felt it was pointless to try and solve the problem for Huai Dan.
She was worried, but Huai Dan didn’t seem uncomfortable at all, even seemingly adding fuel to the fire unintentionally.
Thinking this, she looked at the two of them with a straight face.
Then she watched as Huai Dan placed a hand on the back of Luo Jing’s hand, his other hand touching the screen as he started editing the document.
“Clang.”
It was the sound of Luo Feng putting her glass down on the coffee table, unable to bear it anymore.
The sound was quite loud, hard to ignore, and they both looked over.
Luo Feng looked at them, then forced a smile: “Aren’t you two thirsty? Want some water?”
During dinner, the atmosphere at the table was unusually warm. Lin Xue was busy introducing the dishes and serving the three children, very interested in feeding them. Luo Jing did miss his home cooking, so he focused on eating, while Huai Dan would occasionally pick up food for him, hand him a tissue, his actions both familiar and subtly intimate.
But this warmth seemed to be blocked from Luo Feng.
She didn’t know if their interactions had always been like this, and she just hadn’t noticed before, or if it was just her overthinking now, but she felt increasingly strange watching them.
…Forget it.
She thought.
It would be fine after they finished dinner and Huai Dan left. When they no longer had the opportunity to meet, Luo Jing would calm down and give up his inappropriate feelings.
She picked at her food, trying to ignore them.
Lin Xue looked at Huai Dan with a smile.
There was a bowl of soup Lin Xue had just served him in front of Luo Jing. As he reached for a dish, his sleeve almost touched the bowl, and Huai Dan, seeing this, blocked it for him and smoothly rolled up his sleeve a bit.
Luo Jing stopped and looked down at his sleeve, obediently waiting for Huai Dan to finish.
“Okay,” Huai Dan lightly patted his arm and withdrew his hand.
Luo Jing looked away and continued eating.
Although he wasn’t her own child, she had watched him grow up, and because of his parents, she had always felt a bit of sympathy for Huai Dan. Now, seeing him tall, handsome, and polite, she felt a sense of pride.
So she asked, “Xiao Huai, do you have a partner now?”
Instantly, silence fell over the table.
Luo Jing froze, and Luo Feng, glancing at him, also felt her heart clench for some reason.
Oh no, what was with Luo Jing’s expression?
Thinking this, she looked at Huai Dan.
Huai Dan paused, put down his chopsticks, his gaze briefly sweeping over the boy sitting next to him, then replied calmly, “Yes.”
Luo Jing: “…”
Luo Feng: “???!”
Her first reaction was, how come she didn’t know?
Her second reaction was, oh no, Luo Jing was going to cry, what should she do?
Thinking this, she looked at Luo Jing again.
His ears were red, his face was red, even his neck seemed a bit red—oh no, oh no, oh no.
She became incredibly nervous, her mind racing, thinking about how to resolve this predicament.
Knowing that there was no possibility between Luo Jing and Huai Dan, her anger towards her brother instantly turned into heartache and guilt.
Looking at Huai Dan again, there was even a hint of accusation in her eyes, as if looking at a scumbag.
Luo Jing paused for a few seconds, then casually withdrew his hand, pretending he hadn’t heard anything, and started eating.
Huai Dan, seeing this, lightly patted his back: “Eat slowly, don’t choke.”
Luo Jing: “…”
He almost choked.
He suppressed his cough, took a sip of soup, then glared at Huai Dan with teary eyes before quickly looking away.
But everything looked different in Luo Feng’s eyes.
Seeing this scene, she felt even worse.
Thinking about her attitude this afternoon, she slightly regretted it.
Luo Jing had finally found someone he liked, and he was heartbroken so soon… Although logically, it wasn’t a bad thing, and everything could go back to normal, she still felt sorry for him.
“Really?” Lin Xue asked, surprised, then happy for Huai Dan. “Is it a boy or a girl? Do I know them?”
“He doesn’t want me to tell anyone yet,” Huai Dan said with a smile.
“Oh, I see.” Lin Xue said understandingly, then added with certainty, “It’s okay, you’re so outstanding, I’m sure his family will like you very much.”
“Mm.” Huai Dan agreed, then paused and suddenly asked, “Then would you be satisfied?”
Luo Jing: “………”
He finally broke down.
He should have let Huai Dan leave when Luo Feng hinted at it at the door.
He shouldn’t have, because of his selfish desires, kept him for dinner.
Luo Jing put down his chopsticks, lowered his head, and punched Huai Dan hard.
Huai Dan, however, remained calm and grabbed his hand, which hadn’t had time to retract, and their fingers intertwined under the table.
Luo Jing: “…”
He took a breath, trying to pull away, but he couldn’t.
Lin Xue, hearing this, froze, then understood that Huai Dan was probably asking if she would be satisfied.
She said decisively, “Of course! Your uncle and I also hope to have a child like you, how wonderful.”
“Unlike these two in our family.” She looked at her son and daughter, a hint of indulgence in her eyes. “So noisy and not at all steady.”
Huai Dan chuckled softly: “That’s good.”
The next day at work, Luo Feng paid extra attention to her brother’s mood. Luo Jing returned to his previous position, and his colleagues all showed great enthusiasm for his return.
Although they didn’t know why Mr. Huai had asked them to “act very happy about Luo Jing’s return,” they were actually genuinely happy.
Luo Jing was a bit overwhelmed.
Because of last night’s incident, he didn’t really want to talk to Huai Dan for now, so he worked very diligently all morning.
At noon, Luo Feng came to have lunch with him.
Luo Feng was unusually agreeable today, and they chatted while eating. Halfway through the meal, Luo Feng finally couldn’t hold back.
She looked at her brother, her voice unusually gentle: “Are you still sad?”
“…No,” Luo Jing’s chopsticks paused slightly. “Actually, I…”
“I know, it’s all his fault, don’t think about it… He’s nothing special, just wait a couple of days,” Luo Feng interrupted him and said seriously.
Luo Jing: “?”
Seeing his confused look, Luo Feng felt even more sympathy for him. She reached out and patted his head: “Don’t be sad.”
After lunch, it was break time. A new drink shop had recently opened downstairs, and one of their drinks seemed especially popular, with a long queue forming every day for the past three days. Luo Jing expressed his interest.
Luo Feng was in a mood to indulge Luo Jing today, and since she also wanted to try it, she had initially planned to have her assistant buy it, but in the end, they decided to go downstairs themselves, also to take a walk and digest their food.
The elevator descended to the first floor, and the doors slowly opened.
It was a beautiful sunny day, and the company lobby was bright. The receptionist looked energetic, and employees were walking around. Luo Feng felt a sense of satisfaction.
…But the next moment, her smile faltered.
Because sitting on a sofa in the lobby was an uninvited guest who shouldn’t be there.
“Brother?” Before she could stop him, Luo Jing, who was behind her, called out, “Why are you here?”
Huai Dan was wearing a light trench coat today, which accentuated his tall and handsome figure, no less striking than the celebrities walking around the building.
Many people glanced at him.
“Waiting for you,” Huai Dan said, looking at Luo Jing, his voice warm and deep.
Luo Feng: “…”
She really wanted to say, can you please stop seducing my brother?
