Chapter 6
“Of course!”
Lin Ling’s eyes curved into crescents. He looked around again, as if thinking of something, and quickly lowered his voice, tiptoeing to Shi Changyuan’s ear, and whispering, “But there are many mutated creatures living here, and they don’t seem to like being disturbed, so let’s keep our voices down.”
A warm breath brushed against his ear, and Shi Changyuan involuntarily dodged to the side.
Seeing the Abyss’s action, the little flower demon thought he had scared his good friend, so he moved closer and quickly comforted him, “It’s okay, although those mutated creatures don’t want to be friends with me, they seem to pretend they can’t see me.”
He patted his chest, very loyal, “I’ll protect you!”
Hearing this, Shi Changyuan smiled.
The human base not far away detected fluctuations from the Abyss again. The researchers in the base looked at the fluctuation data with solemn expressions.
The mutated creatures in the city ruins, originally hiding in their nests, trembled, and their already light breathing stopped.
They all burrowed deeper into their nests, for fear that the Abyss, in its excessive joy, would pull them out to perform a heroic rescue.
It was a good thing they hadn’t bullied that little flower before, all the mutated creatures thought in unison.
But the little flower demon was completely oblivious to all of this. He stared blankly at Shi Changyuan’s deep eyes.
Originally, those eyes, like the Abyss, were as black as ink, but now, with a hint of laughter, they were as if stars had fallen into the abyss, dyeing Shi Changyuan’s entire being with warm colors.
Seeing Lin Ling’s dazed and silly look, the curve of Shi Changyuan’s lips became even more pronounced.
For some unknown reason, Lin Ling suddenly felt at a loss for what to do with his hands and feet. He scratched his face, put his hands behind his back, busied himself for a while, and then asked,
“Do… do you not believe me?”
“I do believe you,” Shi Changyuan said with a smile.
“Thank you, Ling Ling, for protecting me.”
Shi Changyuan’s voice, already low and deep, now carried a smile as it fell on Lin Ling’s ears, and the little flower demon felt as if he had been scorched.
Lin Ling suddenly jumped back several steps, stammering, “Y-you’re welcome!”
After saying that, the little flower demon turned around, carefully touched his ears, confirming that they were intact.
It must be the weather! Lin Ling thought calmly, otherwise he would be at risk of spontaneous combustion.
“It’s a pity that the humans moved the base, otherwise I could ask them for ice,” Lin Ling turned to look at Shi Changyuan, rubbing his ears again, which still felt hot.
“Does Ling Ling like humans very much?” Shi Changyuan asked suddenly, staring at the little flower demon’s fingertips on his earlobe.
“Of course,” the little flower demon bobbed his head, his face full of longing.
“Humans all like me very much, and they take good care of me. The first time I sneaked into the human base, it was simply amazing, I didn’t want to leave.”
“And human things are so interesting! They can create ice-cold things in the summer, and they can make the whole house warm in the winter.”
“I have many friends too!”
Mentioning these things made Lin Ling’s eyes sparkle, but it also inevitably reminded him that his friends had all moved.
The sparkle in his eyes dimmed. The little flower demon lowered his head, kicking the pebbles under his feet, and said slowly, “Moving the city was the decision of the human base, I can understand, but… but…”
Lin Ling’s voice became even smaller.
“I didn’t even say goodbye to them.”
Shi Changyuan looked at the crown of the little flower demon’s head and couldn’t help but reach out and rub it. “Why say goodbye?”
Lin Ling knew that the Abyss was comforting him. He rubbed his head against Shi Changyuan’s palm, and just as he was about to explain what goodbye meant, the Abyss continued,
“I can take Ling Ling to find the humans.”
“Really?! Do I need to prepare anything?”
The little flower demon abruptly looked up. Although it was a question, there wasn’t a trace of doubt in his tone, his eyes full of adoration.
“Mm.”
Shi Changyuan looked at the adoration in Lin Ling’s eyes, looked at the little flower demon in front of him, “Yes, your main body.”
By placing his main body in the Abyss, he wouldn’t be restricted by the range of his roots.
Because the Abyss was boundless and infinite.
Before Shi Changyuan could explain, Lin Ling quickly nodded, completely without any guard, not worried at all that exposing his main body would put him in danger.
Placing his main body in the Abyss was equivalent to handing over his lifeline to someone else. After all, the root system of a plant was its greatest weakness, even for the most powerful mutated creatures.
“Let’s go, let’s go!” Lin Ling excitedly took Shi Changyuan’s hand and pulled him towards his main body.
The little flower demon took two steps forward, but Shi Changyuan stood still, refusing to budge no matter how hard he pulled.
“Forget it,” Shi Changyuan suddenly said.
His seed hadn’t learned how to hide and protect itself yet, he had to teach him.
Just as Lin Ling cast a puzzled look, Shi Changyuan picked him up.
He exclaimed, quickly wrapping his arms around Shi Changyuan’s neck to steady himself, then felt the scene blur before his eyes. What came into view was the familiar yet unfamiliar tall city wall.
It was a human base, but not the Seventh Human Base.
“Wow, is this the legendary shrinking of three hundred miles?” Lin Ling’s eyes widened in amazement.
He sat on Shi Changyuan’s arm, not daring to come down casually, and could only crane his neck to look at the gate of this unknown human base.
Like the previous Seventh Base, this base also had a long queue of people waiting to enter the city.
“Beep beep beep—”
“Alert, alert, Abyss fluctuation approaching the base, Abyss fluctuation approaching the base, please evacuate immediately, please evacuate immediately—”
The moment Shi Changyuan brought Lin Ling to the human base, the instrument’s alarm caused chaos in the base’s monitoring station.
The researchers began to check the instruments, but apart from the instrument monitoring the Abyss’s fluctuations, no other devices detected any reaction from the Abyss, nor did they find any signs of the Abyss expanding.
“Scan all biological fluctuations near the base.”
Shi Changyuan felt the human gaze. He looked up and saw a small drone hovering overhead.
But he ignored it.
Soon, through a comparison of perfectly synchronized fluctuations, the humans were stunned to discover a piece of news they had never known before—
The Abyss had another form, a fast-moving, unpredictable, and even more dangerous form.
Immediately, the highest alert in the entire Sixth Base was sounded.
The piercing alarm startled the little flower demon, and then, the content of the alarm startled him again.
“Did they… discover your identity?” Lin Ling asked, looking at Shi Changyuan as he listened to the broadcast.
“Mm.”
Shi Changyuan’s tone was flat, as if he didn’t care about this matter.
Lin Ling watched the commotion at the gate as well. The humans queuing to enter the city were scared and panicked. They listened to the urgent alarm, but since no actual danger had occurred, they could only stand there in confusion.
Lin Ling looked at them, then at Shi Changyuan, whom he was holding.
“Forget it then.”
The little flower demon wrapped his arms around Shi Changyuan’s neck, holding him even tighter. He even imitated Shi Changyuan, patting his head and saying cautiously,
“It seems today isn’t suitable for visiting friends, let’s go back.”
Shi Changyuan had no objections, letting Lin Ling decide. The scene blurred again, and the little flower demon was back next to the giant abyssal pit, landing on the familiar boulder.
It was the same place where they exchanged gifts.
After landing, Lin Ling remained dazed, as if struggling with something.
“I don’t mind.”
“Don’t be sad.”
The two spoke almost simultaneously.
“They just misunderstand you.” Lin Ling looked at the man in front of him, unable to think of any comforting words, so he could only step forward and hug him again.
“They’ll know you’re a good Abyss!”
Feeling Lin Ling’s closeness, Shi Changyuan seemed to have suddenly discovered a new continent. He lowered his eyes and slowly said,
“I devour. It’s normal for humans to be afraid.”
There was a clumsy, feigned disappointment in his tone, but the little flower demon didn’t hear it at all.
“Who says so!”
The little flower demon looked at the man in front of him and emphasized loudly, “I’m not afraid.”
As he spoke, Lin Ling broke free from Shi Changyuan’s embrace, walked to the land that had been eroded by the Abyss, squatted down, and touched the ground in front of his toes with his finger. A small white flower instantly sprouted.
Lin Ling continued to poke forward. Everywhere he touched, a small white flower the size of a fingernail sprouted.
The white flowers followed Lin Ling’s fingertips, slowly approaching the boundary between the normal land and the black Abyss…
“Look!”
Lin Ling stood up abruptly, his eyes curving as he looked at the other party, showing Shi Changyuan his masterpiece.
On the lifeless black soil, considered the land of death, a small white flower bloomed, swaying in the wind.
Why am I thinking of Hades and Persephone when I read the last scene??
