Chapter 17: The Cannon Fodder Roommate of the Unlimited Flow Male Lead (Part 17-1)
Yu Lin’s breath hitched for a few seconds. When he looked up again, the woman who had been staring at him at the village entrance was gone.
As if a layer of mysterious fog had been lifted, the desolate village suddenly became lively, returning to its original state.
The gray, peeling walls became brand new, the tall and imposing vermilion gates were brightly painted, and the faint sound of musical instruments could be heard from the courtyard.
Many chaotic sounds mixed together, noisy and bustling, as if the previously dilapidated and desolate village had been an illusion.
Ahead, a dozen or so players dressed in Republican-era clothing stood on a mound at the village entrance, whispering to each other and looking inside with various expressions.
Yu Lin’s hearing was sharp. He heard some whispers: “This instance, damn, it’s giving me goosebumps. Any clues?”
“I don’t know. Let’s wait for the NPCs to come out and see.”
Yu Lin stood behind the crowd, looked past them, and at the red lantern at the village entrance. It was empty. As he was looking, his palm suddenly felt a warmth.
He turned his head to the side. A man in a dark long gown was looking down, reaching out to hold his hand.
He looked over, and the other person happened to look over at the same time. His eyes were dark, his figure tall, and his sharp features were slightly raised, complementing the dark patterns on his clothes, like a beast lurking in the night.
He looked at Yu Lin. It was a completely unfamiliar face. Although it was also very good-looking, it was not at all similar to his boyfriend, and it was full of aggression.
“…” Yu Lin hesitated for a second, looked at him, and felt the familiar touch in his palm. After a moment of silence, he gradually accepted this setting.
His expression was frozen for a moment. Su Huai sensed something, suddenly lowered his eyelids, and looked at him. “Not used to it?”
As he spoke, he lifted Yu Lin’s hand and naturally placed it in his sleeve pocket. After a pause, his gaze fell on the cold fingers in the pocket, and he frowned slightly.
Yu Lin didn’t know that he was dissatisfied with the temperature of his palm and thought he felt offended. He pressed his lips together slightly and subconsciously said, “No.”
He thought for a moment and said, “You look good like this too.”
The flag at the village entrance swayed gently with the breeze. Yu Lin looked up, his eyes curving slightly, coaxing his slightly raised-eyebrow boyfriend.
Su Huai paused, looked at him, and suddenly asked, “Which one do you like more?”
Yu Lin was completely bewildered.
Because he had integrated into the historical background, Yu Lin’s original T-shirt had become a long gown.
He stood in the moonlight at the village entrance, wearing a clean white long gown embroidered with cloud patterns. The collar of the long gown was also adorned with black frog buttons, which made his features even more elegant and his eyelashes long and thick.
He opened his mouth, paused for a while, and his eyelids suddenly trembled as he said softly, “I like them both.”
The way he tried to coax him was both obedient and pitiful.
Su Huai looked at him, his fingers holding his tightened. He grunted, “En.” After a while, when his hand was warm, he lowered his head and took the other one.
He stood behind the crowd, his expression placid, and silently warmed his boyfriend’s hands bit by bit.
The others had no idea that someone could be so unafraid of death in this place, secretly making small movements. They were just whispering and didn’t notice.
The night at the village entrance cooled down for a moment, until the crowd suddenly burst into a clamor.
“What is that!”
“It, it, it—is it moving!”
Su Huai turned his head. Under the eaves, two red lanterns stood against the wind and suddenly spun in the air.
Yu Lin also looked over, pressed his lips together slightly, and described the scene he saw in a low voice.
“I also saw… there’s a person under there just now.” His voice was very soft.
Hearing this, Su Huai’s hand holding his tightened. He frowned and looked at the two lanterns hanging high at the village entrance.
The number of players in this dungeon was still large, with thirteen or fourteen of them. They were all standing at the village entrance, either curiously or frowning as they looked inside, not daring to act rashly.
Yu Lin was talking to Su Huai in a low voice when he suddenly felt a gaze from the crowd. He turned his head to look and only saw a boy with an unfamiliar face and pink hair looking over, his eyes full of surprise.
Seeing Yu Lin look over, he was stunned for a moment, then quickly retracted his gaze and looked around at the scene in surprise and uncertainty.
He had no malicious intent, so Yu Lin didn’t investigate further.
The group stopped at the village entrance. People came over one after another, and the team gradually grew. Many people either found their companions or teamed up with others. The village entrance was noisy.
There was also a newcomer, a man in a long gown. After waking up and looking around, he kept tearing at his clothes, his expression on the verge of collapse. “Where is this? What are you guys! Are you filming a movie?!”
He hadn’t seen the dilapidated scenery of the village, but in his eyes, a village with red lanterns hanging everywhere had appeared out of thin air in the wilderness, which was also an extremely terrifying thing.
Beside him, in the face of his clamor, some people watched coldly, some remained silent, and some were surprised and uncertain, secretly observing.
The NPCs did not appear. Yu Lin and Su Huai observed their surroundings. A little warmth suddenly pressed against their feet.
Yu Lin was slightly stunned and subconsciously looked up at Su Huai. Su Huai reached out, ruffled his hair, and frowned as he looked down.
A boy, huddled up like a quail, was squatting at their feet, seventeen or eighteen years old, his face pale.
He was breathing heavily, and for some reason, his left hand was tightly gripping his right, his voice trembling. “You… 01, Brother Lin Lin?”
Yu Lin recognized his accent. “Donggua?”
Donggua was relieved that he could recognize him. His eyes turned red, and he nodded desperately. “It’s me, it’s me. It’s a good thing I saw you two over here… but I didn’t see my sister.”
Yu Lin looked around. There were probably seven or eight girls in this dungeon. At this moment, they were all standing together in twos and threes, but Dongqing was not among them.
Donggua was already frantic. He sniffled, on the verge of tears. “I… I just went out to look for her, but… it’s all… all graves.”
His face was covered in dirt, his expression filled with frustration. “What should I do?”
Yu Lin was stunned. He looked at the small scratches on his body, helped him up, and said softly, “Don’t worry. You can follow us for now.”
Donggua stood up, sniffled, and said embarrassedly, “Brother Lin Lin, I… I have experience. I won’t trouble you. I was just… too panicked just now.”
He was only in the second year of middle school when he was pulled into the dungeon. After his sister found out, she forced him to grow up every day.
He had always felt that it was very tiring and hard, but after not seeing his sister, he hated that he hadn’t worked harder before.
Yu Lin looked at him, pressed his lips together slightly, and comforted him softly, “It’s fine. It’s no trouble.”
His fingers tightened. He looked up at Su Huai. Su Huai looked over and nodded lightly.
The two of them led Donggua to a secluded spot. Before long, an old man in a long gown with graying hair walked out of the village quickly.
The old man’s skin was as if it were covered in a layer of wax, his expression stiff. He looked over, first counted the number of people, and when he found that it was wrong, he frowned and counted again.
He muttered something in a low voice, then smiled again. “You’re all here to send Yilan off to be married, right?”
He held a cane and walked down the steps with a clatter. His movements were slow, like a stiff corpse that had crawled out of a pile of coffins. But he was unaware of it, his expression still trying to be as kind as possible.
The timid players couldn’t help but let out a small scream. He seemed not to have heard it and just said slowly, “Alas, it’s too chaotic outside. Our village hasn’t had such a happy event in years…”
He talked about the background, which was similar to what Yu Lin had learned.
After he finished, he paused and said slowly, “But Yilan and the military lord’s marriage is a big event, and there are too many things to prepare. We can’t handle it all at once. If the guests have time in the next few days, please help out a little.”
“Oh right.” he muttered in a low voice, “Our custom here is not to eat raw food. If anyone sees it, remember to come and find me quickly.”
This seemed to be some kind of rule. He said it placidly. After he finished, he remembered something else. “Oh, right. I am the village chief of Zhao Family Village.”
He smiled. “If the guests encounter any problems, you can come and find me. Well… I’ve said everything I should. Please come in. After a while, we will send Yilan off safely together.”
He turned his head, and his cane made a crisp sound on the ground. The waxy skin on his face reflected slightly in the moonlight, and he deliberately emphasized the words “safely.”
Yu Lin looked at him and frowned slightly.
On the forum, the players who were willing to comment seemed to have never really waited until Yilan got married. Those who had seen that day, on the other hand, kept their mouths shut.
Combined with the village chief’s words, it meant that Yilan’s wedding was not peaceful.
What was it that would disrupt Yilan’s peace? What had happened at the wedding?
As Yu Lin was thinking, the Main God panel, which had been silent, suddenly popped up, and a line of thick, dripping blood-red text flowed down.
『On the thirty-third of March, send Zhao Yilan off to be married safely.』
The moment the panel popped up, a strange change suddenly occurred around them. A thick fog spread around them.
The fog became heavier and heavier, and the smell was pungent and choking. Hands stretched out from the thick fog, driving the players forward. Cries of alarm broke out in the crowd.
The village chief was used to such things. He smiled and comforted them, “Our place is remote and mountainous. There’s often a thick fog at night. It’s nothing serious.”
As he spoke, the layer of wax on his face reflected slightly, looking extremely bizarre.
Someone cursed.
He was completely unaware. He led the players with stiff expressions behind him and walked through the village with bright red lights.
The road in the village was very narrow, only able to accommodate three people walking at the same time. The night was thick, and the crowd walked tremblingly under a row of red lanterns.
Yu Lin leaned against the wall, his fingers cold. Su Huai walked by his side, his long and powerful fingers holding his, comforting him calmly.
The village was not large, and it even looked small from the outside. But once inside, they realized that it was a different world, very oppressive.
The tile-roofed houses were connected one after another, and the beams were all hung with the character for “joy” and bright red lanterns. But it was so dark that they couldn’t see the sky. In the night, it was like a bloody mouth, ready to swallow people at any time.
The village chief led them, his expression blank, and walked all the way to the only house in the village without a lantern.
He frowned, covering the malice that was almost impossible to hide in his eyes. He pointed to the dark building in front of the dirt road and said calmly, “Go in.”
His tone was strange. “There are too many people in the village these days. Only the ancestral hall is empty. Please make do with it for now.”
As he spoke, his expression was placid. He stood still, as if he was very unwilling to go over.
The crowd was thrown into a state of confusion by his strange behavior and couldn’t help but look in the direction he had indicated.
The ancestral hall was right in front of them. Under the dim moonlight, it looked pitch-black. Compared to the new and lively village, it even looked desolate and dilapidated.
Because there was no light, the visibility inside was very low, and it was blurry and unclear.
A bold player pushed the door open and went in. Before long, he came out screaming. The others went over to take a look and saw that the main door of the ancestral hall was wide open, and there were dense rows of memorial tablets.
Countless memorial tablets of the dead, it made one’s scalp tingle.
Late at night, a mountain village, an ancestral hall, a wedding procession—the buffs of several horror game keywords were maxed out. Someone immediately couldn’t stand it and squatted on the ground, trembling.
The village chief held his cane and just stared at them with a blank expression, his true thoughts unclear.
After a while, he smiled slightly and said again, “It’s getting late. You should all rest. Don’t go out if there’s nothing. In a few days, we’ll send Yilan off to be married!”
After he finished, he turned and was about to leave.
The man who had initially questioned if this was a movie had already collapsed. He suddenly rushed at him.
His eyes were bloodshot. He grabbed the village chief’s collar and shouted, “I saw it! I saw it! You were secretly laughing. No! No! You can’t leave me here. Let me go! Let me go!”
The village chief paused, slowly turned around, and glanced at him. “The guest doesn’t want to stay here?”
The man shouted, “Of course! Let me go quickly!”
The village chief listened but said nothing. He smiled slightly. “In that case, then let’s go.”
With that, he leaned on his cane and slowly led the man away.
The moonlight fell on the ground behind them, and it seemed no different, except… the village chief was walking on his tiptoes, his heels barely touching the ground.
Behind them, the dozen or so players had various expressions, most of them pale.
A girl covered her mouth and pointed tremblingly in the direction the two had left. “His feet—mmph!”
Behind her, a girl with an equally pale face quickly covered her mouth and said with a trembling voice, “Here, talk less.”
The girl whose mouth was covered nodded tearfully.
After the farce, no one was in the mood to argue about anything else and all rushed into the bizarre ancestral hall.
Besides the room in the middle where the memorial tablets were placed, there were two rows of small houses on the left and right, very narrow, which seemed to be for people to live in.
A group of players rushed over, and before long, the doors of the rooms were tightly closed one by one.
The rooms were not large, but the number was limited. Most people were squeezed in pairs.
Donggua was silent. He chose the room next to Yu Lin and Su Huai. He hadn’t said much along the way and looked preoccupied.
When he was about to go in, he almost tripped over the threshold. Yu Lin pushed the door open, turned his head to look at him, and hesitated slightly. “Donggua, are you okay by yourself?”
Donggua paused, smiled at him, his expression quiet, and said in a small voice, “It’s fine, Brother Lin Lin. My sister doesn’t like to live with others. I’ll leave a room for her.”
He was in low spirits, and the current situation was unclear. There was no clue as to Dongqing’s whereabouts.
Yu Lin looked at him, not knowing how to comfort him for a moment.
He didn’t have Dongqing’s plotline, so he didn’t know where she was at this moment. He could only vaguely judge that she was not in mortal danger and had appeared later in the script.
It was just that when she appeared, her personality was extremely cold, with no human touch to speak of.
Yu Lin didn’t know what had happened in between. He looked at Donggua, and after a moment, nodded lightly.
He told him, “The dormitory is most likely a safe point. Your sister… will be fine. But before she comes back, you have to protect yourself. Remember not to go out at night… if something happens, make a noise. We’re next door.”
Donggua sniffled and nodded quickly. “I know, Brother Lin Lin. Thank you.”
Yu Lin shook his head, glanced at him again, and turned to walk into the room.
He had fallen behind to talk to Donggua. Su Huai was already standing in the guest room, looking around.
A square little room, the light was very dim. On the left was an earthen bed, and on the right was a square wooden table.
Su Huai took out a small knife, walked to the corner of the wall, and the sharp blade cut open the wall.
There was no light in the ancestral hall, only the faint moonlight. The blade was cold. He squatted down to observe, his hair falling over his eyelids, his lips pressed tightly together.
Yu Lin walked over, reached out to brush away the hair falling over his eyelids, and followed him to look down.
