Chapter 36: The Vicious Ex-Boyfriend of the Impoverished Bigshot (Part 4)
It was a little cold in the morning. When they came out of Teacher Zhang’s house, there were still about ten minutes before class.
Liuhe Town was not big, but the interpersonal relationships were very complicated. Teacher Zhang herself was a retired teacher, and her husband held a post in the town.
The original host and his friends had frightened the couple’s sick daughter while they were playing, and the couple had been angry because of this. They had made a big deal out of it and had gone to Yu’s father to demand an explanation.
This was a very troublesome matter. Not only did they have to apologize and admit their mistake, but they also had to visit the girl’s house frequently. Yu’s father found it troublesome and simply ignored it, and let Yu Lin drop out of school.
Yu Lin had originally wanted to go to the office to explain before class, but Shen Zhou had gone one step ahead of him and had brought him to plead for him.
The corridor was very narrow, and the light was very dim. Yu Lin walked down the stairs in silence, his lips pressed lightly together.
Shen Zhou was walking downstairs, his eyelids half-lowered. The bag in his hand was already empty. Inside were the supplements he had brought for the teacher’s daughter.
Yu Lin took a deep breath. “Shen Zhou.”
“En.” Shen Zhou turned his head, and his dark eyes looked down and met Yu Lin’s. He nodded slightly and said, “Go back to class.”
His face was as calm as if nothing had happened.
A draft suddenly blew in and made the bare ankles cold.
Yu Lin took a step forward and was about to ask him what he had done when the hand hanging by his side was taken.
“Cold?” Shen Zhou frowned, held his hand in his palm, and after a pause, he stuffed it into his pocket.
He pressed his lips together and asked, “Are you cold?”
As he spoke, he raised his hand and straightened the collar by Yu Lin’s chin.
He had been busy for half the night, and he had only just managed to clear the relationship with the school. He had barely closed his eyes. He had smoked a cigarette in the morning to wake himself up, and he had a faint smell of tobacco on him.
This body of Yu Lin’s had a slight addiction to smoking. His chin rubbed against his hand, and his nose twitched slightly. “Did you smoke?”
Shen Zhou nodded, and his bent knuckles curled slightly and rested on the side of his jaw. He said, “I won’t smoke anymore. Don’t think about it. Listen carefully in class. If you don’t understand, you can ask me when you get back.”
His features were calm, and he was so steady and rational that he didn’t seem like a nineteen-year-old young man.
The Shen Zhou in the plot was taciturn and rigid, similar to the person in front of him, but also seemed a little different.
Yu Lin looked at him, nodded lightly, and said, “I know, Shen Zhou.”
The fingers in his pocket curled slightly, and he opened them and held Shen Zhou’s in return. “Thank you.”
After he was done, he still had to go to work. Shen Zhou took Yu Lin to the teaching building and looked up at him as he went upstairs.
Yu Lin had a bad reputation. Besides the teacher who had given out the books, no one had come to talk to him all day in the classroom.
Only a baby-faced boy had passed by during the break and had been looking at him. He hadn’t been paying attention to the road and had fallen with a thud.
Yu Lin put down his pen and looked up at him lightly.
Lin Yue, who was secretly watching, “!!!”
Lin Yue got up, patted his knees and came over, and scratched his face. “Hello, brother. You’re Yu Lin, right? Brother Shen asked me to take care of you at school.”
Lin Yue was very talkative. Seeing Yu Lin look over, he chuckled, and simply pulled up a stool and sat down. He said with a smile, “I didn’t dare to come at first.”
Yu Lin was puzzled. “What?”
Lin Yue said in a small voice, “Well, I heard that you have fifty brothers outside of school!”
“…” Yu Lin thought of the yellow-haired youths who had come to ask him for money these past few days, smiled, and said to him, “Five.”
Lin Yue: “…”
Lin Yue’s face was a picture of devastation. “You really do?”
Yu Lin couldn’t help but laugh. “What’s wrong?”
Lin Yue shook his head, shrank back, and then leaned forward again. “Brother Shen asked me to help you out.”
Yu Lin blinked. “Shen Zhou?”
Lin Yue nodded. “En.”
Lin Yue and Shen Zhou had been playing together since they were young, and their relationship was very strong. When Shen Zhou’s parents were still alive, they had lived in the same courtyard.
Even after they had grown up, his mother would still ask Shen Zhou to eat at their house from time to time.
“He’s never talked to me so much before.” Lin Yue had a puzzled and resentful look on his face. “He told me to watch over you. If you run into any trouble, you should tell him. Why is he so concerned about you?”
The atmosphere in the town was closed. Besides a few troublemakers, no one knew the real relationship between Shen Zhou and Yu Lin.
Yu Lin looked at the clueless Lin Yue, blinked lightly, and gave him a lollipop. “Want one?”
Lin Yue’s eyes turned green. “Damn! Yes!”

The students in the town had to go home to help after class, so the school let out very early.
Lin Yue held his schoolbag, swept his books into it, and when he turned around, he saw his new classmate, unhurriedly, sitting in his seat, and tidying up his textbooks one by one.
“New classmate, you’re even carrying a drawing board. Can you carry it? It’s so heavy. By the way, what are you doing later?” Lin Yue looked at Yu Lin, scratched his hair, and asked loudly, leaning against his desk.
After thinking for a moment, he asked, “There’s a new movie at the cinema. Want to watch it? We can ask Brother Shen to come with us?”
As he was speaking, the window glass was suddenly knocked on.
The glass was very fragile, and the sound of it being knocked on by a finger was muffled. Lin Yue belatedly looked up, and in the dim and dusty light of dusk, he saw his Brother Shen standing by the window and looking at them.
He had probably just come back from moving goods. His hair was a little messy, and his sleeves were rolled up to his elbows. His eyes under his brow bone were dark. When he saw him, he raised his eyebrows slightly.
“Brother Shen!” Lin Yue was very happy. He put down the leg that was on the front desk and waved at him.
“En.” Shen Zhou came in, nodded slightly at him, and then went to the back, stopped at the back row, and reached for the new classmate’s schoolbag.
“You guys?” Lin Yue looked at them strangely.
He watched as Shen Zhou held the schoolbag in one hand and put the other in his pocket. After a pause, he took out a lollipop and handed it to the new classmate.
The lollipop was the same kind he had eaten in the morning, milk-flavored.
Lin Yue couldn’t believe it and rubbed his eyes. “When did you start eating candy?”
Shen Zhou’s eyelids were lowered, and he glanced at him casually. “There are movie tickets at the shop. If you want to watch, you can go and get them yourself.”
“Oh, oh.” Hearing this, Lin Yue was immediately happy and instantly forgot about what had just happened. “Then, bro, can I take two? I want to go with a friend.”
Shen Zhou: “…”
He turned around and nodded almost imperceptibly. “Whatever.”
Lin Yue had a free movie to watch and ran away in a flash. The classroom was quiet again.
The school after school was particularly deserted. After tidying up the desk, Yu Lin and Shen Zhou went downstairs one after another.
The light of dusk was a rich orange.
“Are you getting used to it?” Shen Zhou suddenly asked as they stepped out of the teaching building.
The students in the town generally started school late, and their quality was uneven.
Yu Lin nodded. “It’s okay.”
After thinking for a moment, he said, “My cultural classes are a bit lacking. The art teacher said I can apply to an art school.”
In this world, Yu Lin was a complete slacker, and only his talent for painting was outstanding.
Dusk was reflecting the afterglow, and there were trees in the school. The wind was blowing the leaves, making a light sound.
Yu Lin stood in the light and shadow of the trees and dusk, his eyelashes lowered. Shen Zhou looked at him and nodded. “Don’t worry about the cultural classes. I’ll find someone to tutor you.”
His expression was natural, and he took on and solved the problem that Yu Lin was about to face, as if he had already prepared for it, to take on this extra responsibility for one person.
The old man at the door had poor eyesight. He was drinking tea and saw the two students stop to talk, and couldn’t help but urge them, “If you’re in a relationship, go outside of school. The school is about to close.”
When he came over, he found that they were two boys, and the reading glasses on the bridge of his nose slipped down a little.
***
Besides Liu Guang, Yu Lin gradually cut off many of his connections with the other yellow-haired youths outside of school.
Shen Zhou was very punctual. He would pick him up from school after school, and he had found a very experienced painting teacher for him. On weekends, he would take him to the teacher’s house in the city to learn painting.
Unconsciously, Shen Zhou had almost taken over all of his schedule.
Shen Zhou had arranged everything in an orderly manner, even a small matter.
Yu Lin was vaguely aware of his almost controlling behavior. After thinking about it, he did not refuse.
Saturday was the day of Yu Lin’s class. The city was much more lively than the town, and there were bright lights hanging by the road. When Yu Lin came out of the teacher’s house, the sky was gradually darkening.
The teacher’s house was in a commercial area, and downstairs were all kinds of noisy shops. There were many people at night, and besides all kinds of snack shops, the entertainment venues were full of lights and wine.
At the entrance of the dance hall, a group of yellow-haired youths with floral tattoos came out, drunk. Seeing Yu Lin with a drawing board by the street, their eyes lit up. “Oh my, Brother Lin.”
He had a cigarette between his fingers and was smoking it from time to time. He smiled, and in the swaying halo of the dance hall, he came towards Yu Lin. “Why haven’t you been in touch recently?”
Yu Lin used to be their money bag. The few people who had gone to find him recently hadn’t even seen him. When the floral-tattooed youth saw him, he wanted to come over and ask.
He smelled of alcohol, not as fresh as Shen Zhou. Yu Lin looked at him and took a step back almost imperceptibly.
In the plot, after the original host had won over Shen Zhou, the floral-tattooed youth had not been shy about giving him ideas, and had instigated the original host to call Shen Zhou out, humiliate him, and make him act like a dog for them.
They had called Shen Zhou to a private room for dinner, had gotten him drunk, or had simply not let him in, and had stood outside the door, listening to the insults for several hours.
Yu Lin held his drawing board, and his black hair fell in the cold wind, making his face look placid. He said, “I’ve been busy recently.”
The temperature had dropped again these past few days. He was wearing a sweater and stood under a dim streetlight. He was tall and slender, and there was no emotion in his eyes.
The floral-tattooed youth looked at him, squinted slightly, and his head was blown by the cold wind, and he suddenly sobered up for a moment.
Yu Lin was not like Shen Zhou, a poor boy who had no power and no influence, and only had his own life to fight with. When he acted, he would spend a lot of money. He was a real little young master.
He couldn’t be offended.
The floral-tattooed youth smiled, and his throat suddenly went dry. He coughed, and with a grin, he said, “I almost forgot. Brother Lin has been busy recently.”
He turned around and took a box of cigarettes from his little brother’s hand. “Let’s have a drink. Shall we go dancing later?”
Yu Lin looked at the cigarettes, didn’t take them, and held his drawing board and walked forward. “No need.”
There were a dozen or so people in the floral-tattooed youth’s group. One of them, seeing that Yu Lin was not giving him face, said unhappily, “You’re not giving face when you’re given face.”
Someone by his side quickly tugged at him. “Brother Zhou, this is our Brother Lin. He spent a lot of money to get us out. Brother Lin has just been busy recently, and he’s playing with the stubborn guy in our town.”
The hooligan called Brother Zhou didn’t understand and raised his eyebrows. “Playing with what?”
The other few people had cigarettes in their mouths, looked at each other, and as if they had heard something interesting, they laughed.
“A stubborn guy.”
In the smoke, someone held a cigarette and said, “You don’t know. There’s a kid in our town who’s been without parents since he was a child. He lived with his uncle, but his uncle sold the house and ran away and didn’t care about him, so he started his own small business.”
Shen Zhou’s hardships were just a trivial topic of conversation for others.
“When you do business, you have to pay protection fees, right? But you know what happened when we went to find him? He refused to pay. He fought five of us by himself, and he didn’t even make a sound with his head covered in blood.”
“If that’s not a stubborn guy, what is?” The person who spoke still had a lingering fear when he thought of that day. “That kid’s hands are black and ruthless. We went to the clinic, and Lai Zi got seven stitches. That kid wasn’t much better off. He didn’t even go to the clinic and just endured it.”
“Idiot.”
He didn’t know who had said it.
Then there was a chaotic and turbid sound, and a cheerful voice said, “An evil person will be ground down by an evil person. No matter how awesome that kid is, when he meets our Brother Lin, he’s just like a dog to be played with.”
“I’m dying of laughter. He probably really thinks our Brother Lin likes him. Haven’t you seen how attentive he is?”
“How could I not? Tsk, I just want to laugh when I think about him finding out that Brother Lin is just playing with him. But when is Brother Lin going to get tired of him and dump him? Let me know when that happens. I want to watch.”
“I’m not planning on playing.” In a cloud of choking smoke, Yu Lin’s pupils were illuminated by the light, and he suddenly said.
He held his drawing board, his expression calm as he looked over. For a moment, it was as if a wandering cloud in the sky had gained weight.
The owner of the street stall poured oil into the pot, and with a sizzle, the flames and the oil pot collided.
The lights on the street were flickering, and the music store was playing pop music. Yu Lin held the drawing board with one hand, and with the other, he raised it and took the cigarette from the floral-tattooed youth’s hand.
The neon lights in front of the dance hall were flickering. A slender cigarette was held between Yu Lin’s fingers. Seeing his action, the few hooligans suddenly fell silent.
The few yellow-haired youths looked at him, puzzled.
Yu Lin said calmly, “I’m not playing with him, and I’m not planning on breaking up with him.”
The yellow-haired youths looked at each other, took a puff of their cigarettes, and looked at him with disbelief.
Yu Lin said calmly, “Shen Zhou, I’m not playing with him.”
Yu Lin walked away. Neither the floral-tattooed youth nor the yellow-haired youths had any intention of stopping him. They just looked at him strangely.
Yu Lin held his drawing board and walked all the way to the corner. Shen Zhou was leaning against the wall, and he didn’t know how long he had been there.
His hair was a little messy, as if he had rushed over. A few stray hairs were on his brow bone, sharp and cold.
Seeing Yu Lin come over, he was silent. He reached for the drawing board in Yu Lin’s hand.
Yu Lin didn’t move and asked with his lips pressed together, “Did you hear?”
Shen Zhou frowned and did not answer. “What?”
Yu Lin did not speak again. The two of them walked forward in silence. From the city to the town, only the deep and cool wind by the river was blowing.
Shen Zhou took Yu Lin all the way home. There was no one at home, and the room was dark. Only a light was on on the wall outside the window, and a yellow halo was surrounding the flying insects.
Yu Lin took the drawing board from Shen Zhou’s hand and held it. He walked up the steps, and Shen Zhou stood below and looked over.
Yu Lin looked at him in the light, and his amber gaze was quiet. He suddenly curved his eyes.
He leaned down, leaned over slightly, and kissed the corner of Shen Zhou’s lips.
“Shen Zhou.” he said, “I’m serious.”
