Chapter 27
It was their first time roasting a chicken outdoors, and neither of them was experienced, but after about forty minutes, the chicken was cooked through, only slightly charred in a few places.
Hugh extinguished the flames, sliced off a thin piece of meat, placed it in a bowl, and handed it to Shi Nuo while he cut away the charred parts.
Shi Nuo, chopsticks in hand, couldn’t wait to take a bite. The chicken skin was crispy, the meat tender and flavorful, infused with the sweetness of the honey.
The chicken was fresh, and the natural honey enhanced the flavor even further.
“Delicious!” Shi Nuo’s eyes lit up, his desire to share overwhelming. “Try it!” he urged, forgetting his usual formality.
Hugh didn’t mind the informality and, following Shi Nuo’s suggestion, cut off a piece and tasted it. It was indeed good. He cut off a few more pieces and placed them in Shi Nuo’s bowl.
Seeing the two drumsticks, he grabbed a plate from the rock beside him and placed them on it, then carved the remaining chicken and arranged the pieces on plates and bowls, making it easier to eat.
Eating in human form was different from eating in beast form. He could manage, but Shi Nuo, with his smaller mouth and less sharp teeth, couldn’t tear and swallow large pieces like he could. The meat needed to be cut into smaller pieces.
Shi Nuo’s gaze was fixed on the thick, crispy drumsticks.
After carving the entire chicken, Hugh looked up and saw Shi Nuo staring longingly at the drumsticks.
A faint smile flickered across his lips. He picked up the plate and handed it to Shi Nuo. “Eat,” he said, his voice unusually gentle.
Shi Nuo, his attention completely focused on the drumsticks, didn’t notice the change in the Alpha’s tone. He simply knew he could finally eat them.
The wild chicken was quite large, its drumsticks bigger than his fist, each one heavy and substantial. Shi Nuo, suppressing his excitement, picked one up.
He took a large bite. The skin was crispy and slightly charred, the meat tender and flavorful, infused with the rich aroma of honey.
After swallowing, he pushed the plate Hugh was holding towards him, not even bothering to wipe the grease from his mouth. “You eat too. There are two.”
“You can have both,” Hugh placed the plate back on the rock and began eating the other parts of the chicken.
Having both drumsticks to himself, Shi Nuo felt a surge of happiness, even just looking at them.
Unable to contain his joy, he took a large, almost savage bite of the drumstick.
Hugh ate slowly. He wasn’t sure how much Shi Nuo would eat. Usually, two drumsticks would be enough, but the Omega seemed particularly happy today and might want more.
The chicken wasn’t greasy at all, but a small, green tomato-like fruit would be a refreshing palate cleanser.
As expected, after finishing both drumsticks, Shi Nuo ate a chicken wing and then declared himself full.
He felt slightly uncomfortable from overeating but content.
The honey-roasted chicken was delicious. Hugh, having no complaints, finished the rest of the meat and incinerated the bones, leaving only a pile of ash.
Since arriving on this planet, his beast instincts had dominated, and even with his ability to create fire, he had mostly eaten raw meat.
He had tried Shi Nuo’s cooked meat a few times, but after the initial novelty wore off, he had lost interest. Today’s roasted chicken, however, was to his liking.
After cleaning up, they carried the bowls and dishes back in their buckets. They had been in a hurry on their way here, almost running, but now, with their stomachs full, they walked slowly, and Shi Nuo noticed a difference.
He had never walked side-by-side with Hugh in his human form like this before.
The wind rustled through the trees, the afternoon sun no longer scorching.
Hugh Elvis carried a bucket in his left hand, Shi Nuo walking beside him on his right. He also noticed the change in the atmosphere.
It wasn’t exactly walking together; it was more like he was closely following Shi Nuo.
Omegas were fragile, and the ground was uneven, covered in grass and potholes. Shi Nuo often injured himself in the wilderness. He had even fallen into a pit before, and if Hugh hadn’t been there, he probably wouldn’t have been able to climb out.
Walking so close, their hands brushed against each other several times.
Shi Nuo, embarrassed, didn’t know where to look. If he looked down at the path, he would see Hugh’s right hand. He could only avert his gaze, looking straight ahead, trying to walk on the smoothest parts of the ground.
But after a short distance, his hand was suddenly grasped.
He instinctively looked up and saw Hugh Elvis’s indifferent expression. The Alpha was also looking at him, his gaze calm, seemingly puzzled by his sudden stop.
The man’s handsome, cold face was intimidating, but the subtle shift in his expression, perhaps the slight softening of his eyes, or the underlying contentment that seemed to permeate his demeanor, made him appear less aloof.
Shi Nuo, not daring to meet his gaze, continued walking, his hand held firmly in the Alpha’s.
Even though they had been intimate, he still couldn’t help but blush.
The night sky was clear, the stars twinkling like scattered pearls.
The bedroom was filled with a warm, sensual atmosphere. Shi Nuo sat on Hugh Elvis’s lap, facing him, their lips locked in a kiss, the occasional soft moan escaping as they moved together.
They had come to the bedroom as soon as dusk settled, Hugh eager for intimacy.
Shi Nuo understood. This was the price for the roasted chicken, the unparalleled satisfaction of a meal he had been craving.
So, paying a small price didn’t seem so bad.
He also found pleasure in it.
The beautiful Omega, held tightly in the strong Alpha’s arms, was showered with kisses on his lips and eyes.
The scent of their mingled pheromones filled the air, the intense pleasure of their perfect compatibility overwhelming them, pulling them into a bottomless vortex.
Early morning. Dew dripped from the trees, landing on Shi Nuo’s shoulder.
He bent down, brushed aside the leaves and grass, and pulled up a light green mushroom. The forest had many varieties of mushrooms, but with no medical facilities available, he could only eat the few he knew were non-toxic.
Fortunately, those non-toxic mushrooms were delicious, especially these light green ones, which could be considered a delicacy.
He had come out early today. Last night, before going to bed, he had asked Hugh about the weather and, learning it would be another sunny day, had asked to leave early in the morning to make multiple trips.
He felt a constant, almost primal need to stockpile food.
Perhaps sated by their encounters during Shi Nuo’s heat, Hugh Elvis had been unusually patient recently, his demands less frequent, his demeanor more gentle as he patiently explored the forest with him.
Shi Nuo only dared to think this privately. He enjoyed this gentler side of Hugh, less physically demanding yet still deeply satisfying.
After the permanent bond, Omegas developed an undeniable dependence on their Alphas.
He gathered mushrooms as he walked deeper into the forest.
Before leaving, Hugh Elvis had told him that there was no danger within a five-hundred-meter radius, so he could venture a bit further to search for food.
Using his optical brain to record the route and surroundings, he entered a pine forest, the ground covered in a thick layer of pine needles.
Moss and other plants also grew here, and Shi Nuo, his hands covered in dirt, searched carefully, placing the mushrooms he found in his bucket.
After thoroughly searching the pine forest, he didn’t wander off any further and returned to the spot where he had parted ways with the white wolf.
The trees all looked the same, and without any landmarks, it was easy to get lost in an unfamiliar forest. Fortunately, his optical brain recorded his movements, and he could follow the map it generated to return to his starting point.
Since the incident with the butterflies, before leaving him alone, the white wolf would always bite him, marking him with his strong pheromones to warn off any other creatures.
Several plump, unknown small animals approached him, then quickly scurried away after getting within ten meters. Shi Nuo knew Hugh’s pheromones were a powerful deterrent.
After waiting for about half an hour, bored enough to be playing with two leaves, he heard a slight noise and simultaneously sensed the Alpha’s pheromones.
The white wolf, having maintained its full, three-meter-tall form in the forest, approached silently, its massive body moving with surprising grace.
It carried a large bundle in its mouth, and Shi Nuo could hear the sound of fruit shells colliding inside.
The bundle was made from the dust cover that had been wrapped around the rug, its four corners tied together.
As soon as the bundle landed on the ground, Shi Nuo untied the knot. It was filled with dark brown fruits, over two hundred of them.
Without needing to be told, the white wolf lifted its forepaw, its heavy claws easily crushing the fruit shells, revealing the white fluff inside.
The task of extracting the fluff and seeds was tedious, and since it didn’t eat them, it didn’t want to do it alone, so it had simply gathered the fruits and brought them to Shi Nuo.
Shi Nuo had no objections. This was his job anyway. It was Hugh who had deemed the two buckets too small, and they had retrieved the dust cover from the basement earlier that morning.
He had been squatting, but now he sat on one corner of the cloth, his movements quick and efficient. The two buckets were filled with mushrooms, so he placed the extracted fluff directly onto the dust cover, discarding the empty shells far away to avoid mixing them up.
As he worked, the wind picked up, blowing some of the lighter fluff and seeds away. He scrambled to catch them.
The white wolf rolled up a corner of the dust cover, covering the fluff, and then placed the two buckets filled with mushrooms on top of it to weigh it down.
Shi Nuo breathed a sigh of relief. Fortunately, the fluff contained seeds, which weren’t too light, and the wind wasn’t too strong, so he had only lost a small amount.
He worked faster, and with the white wolf’s help, they finally finished processing all the fruits.
Shi Nuo stood up, tied the four corners of the dust cover securely, and then used the vine to tie the two buckets together.
He was pleased with today’s harvest, both mushrooms and rice. This was much more efficient than making multiple trips.
To accommodate him, the white wolf shrunk to its smaller size, only a meter and a half tall at the shoulder.
However, seeing the white wolf pick up the bundle in its mouth, lower its body, and allow him to place the vine with the buckets on its back, Shi Nuo felt a pang of guilt. “Mr. Elvis,” he hesitated, “is this too heavy?”
The white wolf, its mouth full, couldn’t reply. It simply glanced at him with its deep blue eyes, its expression indifferent.
Shi Nuo felt embarrassed, thinking he might have annoyed Hugh.
Not wanting to prolong the Alpha’s displeasure, he quickly climbed onto the wolf’s back.
Just as he settled down, the white wolf beneath him suddenly grew larger, its muscles and bones shifting and expanding, the sound of cracking joints audible, until it reached its full, three-meter-tall form.
The close proximity to the massive beast, its power and ferocity palpable, the shifting muscles beneath him a stark reminder of its strength, made Shi Nuo, who was inherently intimidated by large, powerful men, tremble slightly.
To make it easier for him to climb on, Hugh usually maintained his smaller form. Shi Nuo had never ridden on his full-sized beast form before.
As the white wolf suddenly darted forward, he quickly lay down, his arms and legs instinctively wrapping around the wolf’s body, trying to hold on tight.
However, the giant beast, three meters tall at the shoulder, was so large and powerful that his entire body was pressed against the wolf’s back, his face buried in the thick, white fur, unable to even reach the sides.
