Chapter 26 p2: Daily Life After Marriage
There was still work to be done at home. Song Ye and Liang Su went to the fields to work. Song Mingyan was not setting up his stall today. He took Xu Cheng to the back mountain to cut grass for the chickens and see if there were any wild mushrooms to dig up and sell.
Everyone in the family had left, leaving only the two of them. Xu Zhizhou let out a breath. Song Changxu had nothing to do now. He usually went to his room to study.
He decided to say something. “I’m going to my room to study.”
Xu Zhizhou’s mind was only on the red envelopes now. He nodded. He had to hide the red envelopes in a place Song Changxu didn’t know about. He would hide them when Song Changxu was not in the room.
Everything in the Song family’s house was clean. Xu Zhizhou walked around the house, touching things, and even teased the chickens and ducks in the coop.
There was a storage room and a mud house. Xu Zhizhou opened the door and saw that it was a place for bathing. There was a channel at the bottom for the water to flow out.
Xu Zhizhou eagerly wandered around. Song Changxu returned to his room. Xu Zhizhou had brought four large chests, which they hadn’t had time to unpack last night. They were still piled up.
He took his book and went out. Xu Zhizhou was watering the mint with a watering can.
Song Changxu said, “I’ll read in the courtyard. Do you want to unpack your chests first?”
Xu Zhizhou nodded. “I should unpack them.”
Time always passed quickly. In the evening, Xu Zhizhou cooked the remaining pork and chicken, and when he called people for dinner, he looked quite the part.
He adapted very quickly.
Liang Su saw that he was handsome and very well-behaved, and she was very satisfied. After dinner, Liang Su took out her needlework and called out to Xu Zhizhou.
“Zhizhou, while it’s not yet dark, come to the courtyard and embroider some purses.”
Xu Zhizhou agreed. He had already integrated his things into the room. He took his scraps of cloth and colored thread from the wardrobe, brought over a stool, and sat next to Liang Su. Song Mingyan was making shoe soles. The three of them sat together, chatting and enjoying the cool breeze.
Liang Su asked, “Zhizhou, what patterns do you know?”
The patterns Xu Zhizhou knew were simple. He wasn’t afraid of being laughed at and mentioned a few.
“As long as we can sew some handkerchiefs, purses, and make shoe soles, that’s enough for household use,” Liang Su said, not placing much importance on these things.
Xu Zhizhou nodded obediently, lowered his eyes, and threaded his needle.
Song Changxu took his nephew out to catch fish and shrimp. This time, they were unlucky and didn’t catch any. They went up the mountain to pick soapberries and wild fruits.
Xu Cheng asked, “Uncle, are there any more wild grapes and peaches?”
Even the most delicious wild fruits on the back mountain would become tiresome after eating too many.
Song Changxu: “I can only pick those when I go to Lingshui Village.”
A wild dog from the mountains came out. Li Hu, following behind the dog, saw it was Song Changxu and greeted him.
“The harvest is good today. I caught two rabbits and a small deer,” Li Hu said, showing them his basket.
Xu Cheng glanced at it and then looked away, his eyes watery. He reached out and grabbed Song Changxu’s robe.
“Brother Li has a good skill.”
Li Hu: “It’s a feast or a famine. I just hope to save up more money so that my wife and children can live a good life in the future.”
The two of them parted ways. A partridge called out in the forest. The villagers didn’t like to go into the forest at night. It was gloomy, and there were wild beasts in the deep mountains, so most of them avoided it.
They met a few people on the road and exchanged a few words. The sunset glow faded, and wild geese flapped their wings in the sky.
Back at home, Xu Cheng’s mind was filled with the image of the small deer he had seen. He ran over and buried his face in Song Mingyan’s arms.
Song Changxu saw Xu Zhizhou quietly embroidering a purse and looked at him with curiosity several times.
“What’s wrong, Cheng Ge’er?” Liang Su asked.
Liang Su and Song Mingyan’s attention was on Xu Cheng. No one noticed Xu Zhizhou and Song Changxu.
What’s so strange about embroidering a purse? Xu Zhizhou looked up and glared at him.
Song Changxu cleared his throat, went into the house, washed the wild fruits, and brought them out on a plate for them to eat.
He didn’t go over to talk to them. He washed up and then went into his room to read and write an essay.
He had gotten married yesterday, but Song Changxu still felt like he was in a dream. Only when he saw Xu Zhizhou on his way back from outside did he feel grounded.
He wrote an essay, and his mind calmed down. During dinner, they ate together. Xu Zhizhou was very happy. He got along well with Liang Su and Song Mingyan, but he was still not very familiar with Song Ye and was a bit reserved in front of him.
“Eat more meat.”
Song Changxu served him some meat to show affection.
Xu Zhizhou called out, “Thank you, husband.”
This made Song Changxu get goosebumps all over. He had only served Xu Zhizhou some food because he was afraid his parents would think their relationship was not good.
“Husband” sounded too embarrassing.
At the table, Song Ye and Liang Su were happy to see this. They wished the young couple would have a good relationship and give them a grandson soon.
The evening breeze blew, and the sound of children playing came from outside the courtyard. Xu Zhizhou fed the chickens and ducks and came back with some chicken and duck eggs.
Chicken eggs were one copper coin each, while duck eggs were more expensive at two. He asked, “Elder Brother, where should I put these?”
Song Mingyan led him to a jar. The jar was lined with dry grass, and there were already a dozen or so chicken and duck eggs mixed together inside.
“When we’ve saved up a bit more, we’ll take them to town to sell.”
The Xu family also saved up their chicken and duck eggs to sell in town. They also raised pigs, which the Song family didn’t. They had a lot of chickens and ducks.
At night, after washing up, he went back to his room and sat on the bed. Song Changxu put down his book and also went to bed.
It was still early, and they were not yet sleepy.
With Xu Zhizhou’s addition, his room, which had been empty, suddenly became crowded. There were a few small boxes on the dressing table. Song Changxu glanced at them curiously but didn’t look closely.
For now, their clothes were placed on separate sides of the wardrobe, and there was still enough space. When Song Changxu went to get his clothes, he saw that Xu Zhizhou had put his scraps of cloth and colored thread inside. He was stunned for a moment, and the image of him embroidering a purse appeared in his mind again.
He looked quite cute.
Song Changxu shook his head, trying to clear his mind of all the miscellaneous thoughts.
He climbed into bed. Xu Zhizhou grabbed his hand and asked seriously, “How much money do you have?”
As expected. This question. Fortunately, he was prepared. Song Changxu knew that he couldn’t not hand it over, but he still had to play hard to get to make it more believable.
“The money I had before we got married, I’ll keep it myself,” Song Changxu said.
Xu Zhizhou immediately narrowed his eyes at him, snatched his pillow, and made him sleep directly on the bedsheet.
“What are you talking about? We said last night that we share weal and woe. You’re a scholar. Don’t you understand that better than me? What money do you need for your studies? Put the money in my hands, and you can just ask me for what you need. When men have money, they’ll just spend it on drinking and gambling, or on women outside.”
The more Xu Zhizhou thought about it, the angrier he got. He poked Song Changxu’s chest. “Is that what you’re thinking?”
Song Changxu was wronged.
He pretended to be angry, went to the wardrobe, took out his purse, and handed it to Xu Zhizhou. “This is all the money I have. You can count it.”
Xu Zhizhou took it and saw that there were five taels of silver inside. Thinking about it, it seemed to be right. After all, his studies also cost money for brushes, ink, paper, and inkstones, and his robes also needed cotton cloth.
He was satisfied in his heart, but he still grumbled, “You’re twenty-one, and you only have this much money?”
Song Changxu had originally wanted to let the matter pass, but hearing Xu Zhizhou’s constant chatter, he felt annoyed and restless.
He changed his inner garments, put the purse under his pillow, and stood with his hands on his hips, about to give another lecture.
“The family’s money should all be managed by the husband. You also…”
Song Changxu stared at his lips. The rustling sound of clothes rubbing together was heard. He held his face, and his lips pressed down.
Xu Zhizhou was instantly silenced.
Song Changxu gently bit his lip, pried open his lips and teeth, his fingers on the back of his neck, his dark hair swaying behind him.
His other hand restrainedly kneaded Xu Zhizhou’s slightly red earlobe. Their mouths were intertwined. Song Changxu moved closer, their breaths mingling.
Xu Zhizhou’s eyes were wide. His lips were being kissed and bitten. He couldn’t help but feel out of breath. Song Changxu gave him air and continued to kiss him.
He had given him the silver, and he still had to listen to so many unpleasant words. This was the reward he deserved.
Xu Zhizhou’s legs went weak from his kisses. His hands subconsciously wrapped around Song Changxu’s waist.
They hadn’t consummated their marriage last night. Xu Zhizhou’s lips parted slightly, and he let out a warm breath.
He reached out a hand to pull at Song Changxu’s sash, his fingers trembling as he pulled it down.
Song Changxu was suddenly startled.
“The book says we should…” Song Changxu held his restless hand, his lips landing on his long neck.
“Do you have to do whatever the book says?” Song Changxu’s Adam’s apple bobbed, his mind in a daze.
Xu Zhizhou’s collarbone was bitten, and his waist was held close.
Song Changxu looked at him through the candlelight.
“Do you really want to be…”
Xu Zhizhou looked at Song Changxu and uncomfortably moved away to avoid him.
What’s the point of being left hanging?
He turned his back to Xu Zhizhou, his breathing restrained and hot.
“Husband, why did you stop?” Xu Zhizhou asked with dissatisfaction, poking him.
Song Changxu didn’t say anything.
He poked and poked.
Song Changxu turned around and grabbed Xu Zhizhou’s hand, saying vaguely, “Do you really want to be…”
He held him, trapping him in his arms and pressing him against his chest.
Xu Zhizhou was furious, and then he felt something pressing against him.
He instantly stiffened, and then became obedient.
No, the ones in the book were all very small.
There’s no comparison at all.
After Xu Zhizhou had quieted down, Song Changxu let him go. Xu Zhizhou pulled the corner of the quilt and moved a little further away from Song Changxu.
Song Changxu: “?”
“We should still wait for this kind of thing,” Xu Zhizhou said, burying himself in the quilt, revealing a pair of round eyes.
Song Changxu nodded in agreement. “I think so too.”
Xu Zhizhou breathed a sigh of relief and then said generously, “But kissing is still okay.”
Song Changxu looked over. “I can kiss anywhere?”
