Chapter 33 p1: Early Spring
Endless, long years. Song Changxu didn’t know where the end was, with no one by his side. They had bowed and gotten married, which was a ceremony. It was fate that they had met in the vast sea of people.
Song Changxu thought that he wanted to spend these long years with Xu Zhizhou, until the end of his life.
A spring and winter had passed. His words seemed too light. Perhaps it was the emotion of the moment, or perhaps it was a sudden whim after a year in another world. Only time would tell.
He also looked forward to the days with Xu Zhizhou.
They shared the same feeling.
Thinking of this, Song Changxu looked up at Xu Zhizhou in the moonlight. Xu Zhizhou was still a bit dazed.
He reached out and patted Song Changxu’s head. “What are you talking about? We’re already married. Of course, we’ll spend the rest of our lives together.”
Song Changxu was silent for a moment, then reached out and hugged Xu Zhizhou, burying his head in his neck.
Xu Zhizhou didn’t move. After Song Changxu had held him for a while, he pushed him away. “Go to sleep.”
Song Changxu hesitated. “Then the consummation?”
Xu Zhizhou’s scalp tingled. He said, “We’ll have to buy some ointment before we talk about that.”
Otherwise, he wouldn’t be able to take Song Changxu.
Song Changxu’s eyes lit up, and he agreed readily. His fingers rested on Xu Zhizhou’s waist, and he fell into a deep sleep.
Seeing him fall asleep so quickly, Xu Zhizhou sighed with a bit of melancholy. It was really different from the book.
After the New Year, every family rested for a while, and then went to the back mountain to chop firewood and sell it. Song Mingyan and Xu Zhizhou embroidered purses at home. They hadn’t set up their stall in town this winter. Every family was cooped up at home. It was better to rest in the cold weather.
Song Changxu read and wrote at home. When Song Ye was about to take the ox-cart to town to sell the family’s vegetables, he went with him to buy some paper and ink.
Xu Zhizhou was still embroidering with Song Mingyan. Song Mingyan knew several patterns that he had never seen before. It was a novel time for him, and he clung to Song Mingyan, unwilling to let go.
Hearing Song Changxu’s words, he said casually, “Don’t you still have paper and ink? Have you used it all up?”
Song Changxu explained, “I’ve been using it up more quickly recently.”
Besides, he wanted to go to town to buy the ointment Xu Zhizhou had mentioned.
Song Ye had already harnessed the ox-cart. He said, “Alright, let’s go.”
There were few people at the village entrance. Song Ye cracked his whip and left without stopping. As they sat on the ox-cart, snowflakes began to fall from the sky. The family’s ox-cart was not driven too fast. They were not in a hurry, and Song Ye drove very steadily.
Song Changxu was wearing a scarf. He reached out his hand, and the snowflakes melted into small water droplets in the warmth of his palm.
Looking out, the mountains were a vast expanse of white, and there were few pedestrians on the road. It took a shichen to walk from Qishan Village to Shuibo Town. No one went out on such a snowy day. If they had to, they would take the village’s ox-cart.
When they arrived at Shuibo Town, Song Ye tied up the ox-cart and went to find a place to sell his vegetables. He thought of something and said, “After you’ve bought your paper and ink, come to my place and sell vegetables with me.”
Song Changxu agreed readily.
In town, Shuibo Town still had some of the festive atmosphere left over from the New Year. The lanterns of the shops were still red, and some of the small restaurants still had red silk hanging on their signs.
Song Changxu found a pharmacy and went in. After a while, he came out with the ointment in his sleeve, went to the bookstore to buy some paper, and then went to find Song Ye.
On such a cold day, not long after the New Year, there were still some people selling vegetables. The townspeople were carrying baskets and picking and choosing, looking for fresher and cheaper vegetables.
Song Ye stood in front of his stall, rubbing his hands together in the cold, his neck shrunk, waiting for people to come and pick his vegetables.
Song Changxu came over. Most of the people buying vegetables were women and ge’ers. They had never seen such a handsome man. Seeing that the vegetables on the ground were dewy, with a full color, and looked fresh, they came over and pretended to ask for the price.
Song Ye smiled and quickly told them the price.
The husband who was picking vegetables nodded. “Then I’ll have two bunches of small green vegetables…”
Song Changxu handed the vegetables to the husband and said, “Thank you.”
The husband put the vegetables in his basket, looked up at him briefly, and then left.
When it came to buying vegetables, it didn’t matter where you bought them. This young gentleman was so handsome. It was nice to be able to chat with him and look at him a few more times.
The other women and ge’ers all came to Song Ye’s to buy vegetables. Song Ye was only responsible for quoting the price, while Song Changxu was responsible for handing them the vegetables.
In a short time, they had sold all their vegetables. Song Ye went to pack up the stall and put it in his basket. It was almost noon. The father and son decided to have two steamers of meat buns first.
After eating, they got on the ox-cart. They ran into Liang Feng and Liang Hui waiting for the ox-cart. Song Ye stopped the cart by their side and called out, “Are you also going to town to buy things today? Come on up.”
Liang Feng’s eyes lit up when he saw it was Song Ye and Song Changxu. He nodded and got on the cart with Liang Hui.
“We’ve sold our family’s vegetables,” Liang Feng said generously.
Liang Hui had come to the cloth shop to buy scraps of cloth and colored thread. She saw Song Changxu and chatted with him for a few words.
“Cousin, what have you been doing recently?”
Song Changxu said, “I’ve just been reading and writing at home.”
Liang Hui nodded. She was still young and had a faint sense of admiration for this cousin of hers who could read and write.
Liang Feng talked about opening a hole in the river to fish. “At first, it was easy to catch fish, but then there were no more fish.”
The three young people had a lot to talk about. The ox-cart rumbled along the road. It wasn’t snowing in the afternoon, and it was much warmer. Song Changxu didn’t dare to look at the snow for too long. After looking for a long time, everything he saw was a vast expanse of white.
At the village entrance, they separated. It was already afternoon when Song Changxu returned home. He went back to his room and didn’t see Xu Zhizhou. He put the paper on the desk and stuffed the ointment under his pillow.
Song Changxu was both nervous and stunned. He let out a breath and took a book to read.
On the other side, Xu Zhizhou had gone to visit a neighbor with Song Mingyan. There was another match-making in the works, and they had heard about it and had gone to join in the fun. The married husbands, ge’ers, and women in the village were all in one room, talking and laughing.
This time, it was a girl from Qishan Village who was marrying into Linglai Village. The distance of a few kilometers was not too far, but it was not as comfortable as being in the same village. However, it was said that the man’s family was good, and the girl would not have to suffer too much after she married.
Xu Zhizhou saw Sun Luzhen and went over to tease him. “Are you envious? You’ll be marrying Bai Yuan next spring.”
Sun Luzhen gently nudged Xu Zhizhou. “How can you say that? I’m not thinking that.”
“I just feel that time passes so quickly. In a blink of an eye, we’ve grown up from children and are now getting married. I sometimes still think I’m a child.”
Xu Zhizhou nodded. “It’s fine. No matter what happens to others, we’ll always be fine.”
They had been together since they were young, and were of a similar age. Now Xu Zhizhou was eighteen, and so was Sun Luzhen. They had known each other since they were three, or perhaps even earlier, but they had no memory of it.
There were so many springs and autumns in life, and they had spent them all together, from young boys to now. Sun Luzhen held Xu Zhizhou’s hand and said, “No matter what happens in the future, we’ll always be good friends.”
Xu Zhizhou said as a matter of course, “Of course we’ll be good for a lifetime.”
The two of them looked at each other and smiled.
Song Mingyan looked at the newly engaged girl who was being teased on the side and couldn’t help but smile.
After the villagers had been lively for a while, an auntie and a husband saw Song Mingyan and teased him, “While the matchmaker is still here, let Matchmaker Mo find a match for Mingyan too.”
Matchmaker Mo looked at Song Mingyan’s appearance and figure, and her eyes lit up. “If it’s this ge’er, he might be able to marry into a family in town.”
Song Mingyan was a bit embarrassed. He quickly waved his hand and said, “I’ve already been married and divorced, and I have a child. I’m not planning to find another one now.”
When Matchmaker Mo heard that Song Mingyan was a divorced ge’er with a child, her tone paused, but she still said kindly, “A ge’er like this can also find a good family. I have a few good families on hand. If you’re interested, I can introduce you?”
With such good looks and figure, it was a pity that he had been married once. Otherwise, it would have been possible for him to marry into a wealthy family in town.
Matchmaker Mo was still a bit unwilling to give up.
Hearing this, Xu Zhizhou came over and said, “If my elder brother doesn’t want to, then he doesn’t want to. I like my elder brother and Cheng Ge’er very much. If they leave, I’ll be unaccustomed to it.”
When Matchmaker Mo saw Xu Zhizhou’s appearance and figure, her eyes lit up again.
“Are you married?” Matchmaker Mo asked enthusiastically.
Xu Zhizhou looked at her with a puzzled expression. “I got married this year. Why are you asking?”
Matchmaker Mo sighed. With such good looks and figure, how could he be married? And he had married into the village.
Xu Zhizhou pulled on Song Mingyan and muttered, “So strange.”
Song Mingyan also laughed, his nervousness lessening a little.
After this, they didn’t stay for long and left.
Matchmaker Mo looked at their backs and asked, “Who did that young ge’er marry?”
An auntie said, “Aiyo, you’re really thinking about him. He married the Song family’s boy from our village. The Song boy is a scholar. The Song family has ten acres of paddy fields and lives in a blue-tiled house. It’s already very good.”
Matchmaker Mo was more knowledgeable than the village women. She shook her head and said, “Not necessarily. The Song family is only considered a good family in your Qishan Village. In Shuibo Town, any small business would surpass them. Besides, the young men in town also know how to read.”
“What can be done? He’s already married. It’s pointless to talk about this now. The Song family’s boy has been studying all this time, and his family has spoiled him. He’s never done much work.”
Matchmaker Mo had seen countless people. Hearing this, she felt that this Song family boy was a profligate son who relied on his parents, did nothing, and just studied. If someone in town did this, she would praise him for his diligence in studying, but the conditions in the village were different.
Even the people in town might not be able to make a name for themselves through studying, let alone someone from the village.
Someone else said, “Mingyan and Zhizhou are the two best-looking in our village. Zhizhou also has an older brother who is not yet married, with good looks and figure, but you can’t persuade him.”
Hearing this, Matchmaker Mo was intrigued. She said, “There’s no unmarried ge’er I can’t persuade.”
“He’s not exactly unmarried. He’s engaged, but it’s been about four or five years. His fiancé has gone to the border and has not yet returned. He’s been waiting.”
Matchmaker Mo was dumbfounded. “What’s there to wait for? With such good looks and figure, and so young, he could find anyone better than someone at the border.”
The aunties and husbands in the village laughed at Matchmaker Mo’s expression.
“It’s a childhood affection. It’s hard to say,” an auntie said.
On her way back, Matchmaker Mo was still muttering to herself. This wouldn’t last long. Neither the one who had married a scholar nor the one who was waiting for a ge’er at the border would have a good end.
It was better to find a wealthy family to marry into.
