Chapter 16: Meow
“This little friend in the bed opposite you is just like you, not an ordinary child.”
“He comes from Planet Meow.”
“I discussed it with the Cat God, and we decided not to tell him your identity for now because he hates dogs too much, which would affect your relationship.”
“When there’s a chance in the future, you can tell him yourself.”
Before Jing Mimi learned to coax himself to sleep like a kitten, Wang Qiuqiu was already lying straight on his bed, eyes closed, conversing with the Dog God in his mind.
The Dog God told him the origin of the other child in the room, saying he was a kitten in his previous life.
A kitten… actually a kitten.
His favorite kitten.
Wang Qiuqiu couldn’t help but secretly open his eyes and glance at the opposite bed under the moonlight.
As luck would have it, he caught sight of Jing Mimi suddenly sitting up in bed.
Following that was the scene of the little cub tossing and turning on the bed like a cat.
Although it was a human child’s body, there was no sense of incongruity at all; it just made him feel extremely cute.
The moment their eyes met, the cat-person almost bristled.
Wang Qiuqiu remained relatively calm. As a police dog who had seen many big scenes, his personality was the most steady.
“Can’t sleep?” Wang Qiuqiu spoke first.
Mimi hated dogs, and he had been deliberately avoiding him all day today because subconsciously, he was still a puppy.
But in fact, he was already a little human. Mimi wouldn’t run away when seeing him like he did with Big Black.
Hearing Wang Qiuqiu’s proactive inquiry, Jing Mimi’s wildly beating heart gradually calmed down. Hugging the little fish doll in his arms tightly, he gave him a small “Mmhmm.”
He thought his movements on the bed had disturbed the other person, so he felt a bit guilty.
But the other person’s next sentence was: “Do you want me to sleep with you?”
Jing Mimi was stunned for a moment. Resting his chin on the little fish doll, under the gaze of those black eyes, he slowly nodded his little head and gave another “Mmhmm.”
Louder than before.
After imitating a kitten’s behavior, he didn’t feel sleepy at all; instead, he was more awake.
He missed Papa even more.
He didn’t want to sleep alone on the empty bed.
When he stayed at Sister Chestnut’s house before, he would curl up and sleep next to Sister Chestnut in a cat nest. Now that he had become a little human, sleeping with another little human was the same.
Not long after, Wang Qiuqiu crawled into Jing Mimi’s quilt.
Because of the “puppy incident,” Jing Mimi and Wang Qiuqiu hadn’t communicated much, and he didn’t know much about him.
After snuggling together, their bodies transmitting warmth, Jing Mimi gradually relaxed, let down his guard, and proactively asked him, “Brother Qiuqiu, are those three kittens okay?”
Wang Qiuqiu: “They’re fine. Big Black sleeps with them at night. Big Black is warm, so they won’t freeze.”
Jing Mimi couldn’t imagine sleeping snuggled up with a dog at all.
He would absolutely never sleep with a dog!!
Wang Qiuqiu’s voice continued: “Someone will come to adopt them in a few days, and they will go to new homes.”
He heard from the welfare institute staff that the three kittens originally had a mother, but she disappeared suddenly after weaning, possibly due to an accident during the snowy days.
Seeing the kittens were pitiful and fearing they would also die in this winter, the welfare institute staff temporarily let them live with Big Black. They took photos and posted them on the welfare institute’s official account, and soon people contacted them to arrange adoption.
“That’s good.” Jing Mimi breathed a sigh of relief.
As long as they could stay away from the big black dog.
The two little cubs chatted about this and that, and sleepiness finally hit. Jing Mimi hugged the little fish doll Papa bought him and fell asleep snuggled against Wang Qiuqiu.
Listening to the breathing beside him becoming even, Wang Qiuqiu suddenly raised his hand carefully and gently rubbed the top of Jing Mimi’s head.
So soft.
His hair was on the harder side, very different from the touch in his hand.
As expected of a cat.
Just like that, Wang Qiuqiu couldn’t resist petting the cat until midnight.
…
Jing Zhi also had some insomnia that night. Fortunately, he went home once and brought melatonin. After taking it, he fell asleep smoothly.
During the time when Mimi was seriously ill until euthanasia, he always had insomnia and was in a very bad state, so he bought a bottle of melatonin. He hadn’t taken much, but brought it just in case, not expecting to use it on the first night.
Maybe it had something to do with not sleeping alone for a long time.
Completely unfamiliar environment, unaccustomed pillows, sheets, and duvet covers, and no warm snuggle beside him—even though he wasn’t that picky about beds, he still had insomnia.
He wondered how the little guy slept alone tonight…
The next day, as soon as the alarm went off, Jing Zhi got out of bed directly. After washing up, he rushed upstairs to the little cub’s room.
In the room, the two little cubs were sleeping in one quilt, neither awake yet.
Jing Mimi’s hair was messy; who knew how he slept like this last night. He was hugging the little fish doll, lying on his side, with one leg under the quilt draped over Wang Qiuqiu.
Wang Qiuqiu, on the other hand, slept straight, his sleeping posture much better than Mimi’s.
Jing Zhi’s suspended heart finally settled.
It seemed the little guy slept well last night.
And his relationship with his dormmate had improved a lot.
The old father felt deeply gratified.
After the two children woke up one after another, Jing Zhi took them to wash up on this floor, spending extra time combing Mimi’s messy hair.
Wang Qiuqiu had white toothpaste foam in his mouth and a guilty, dodging look in his eyes.
After breakfast, there were some group activities in the morning. Jing Mimi and Wang Qiuqiu’s relationship became even better after the revolutionary friendship of sleeping together last night. Jing Zhi safely took them to the classroom and returned to his room.
Because of Mimi’s matter, work had been delayed for a long time and piled up. He had to find time to deal with it.
He brought a portable laptop and a mobile hard drive, preparing to edit and process the previously recorded videos later.
It was a newly released horror game recently. He streamed and cleared it on the first day of release.
Usually, he would stay up late to edit the recorded video that night because the traffic for this game was best during that time. But because of Mimi, he really had no heart for work.
There would be many new games in the future, but the kitten Mimi was unique.
He knew his priorities and didn’t regret it.
Plugging the hard drive into the laptop, Jing Zhi began to work skillfully.
Mistakes were inevitable during live streaming, but even mistakes could bring a lot of comedic effects. He couldn’t just never get jump-scared by a ghost; that would be too boring.
He had to cut out some unnecessary shots to enhance the overall smoothness of the video, and then embed some walkthrough tutorials and analysis of the game’s core content.
Actually, he had already edited more than half of it before; he just needed to finish the rest in one go.
When he finished, it was almost lunch time. Jing Zhi hurriedly published the video and turned off the computer.
Just as he was walking towards the classroom where the little cub was, looking down at his phone, a newly refreshed top comment made him pause.
[Little Jing’s Only Husband]: Sprinkling flowers~ Wifey worked hard.
Jing Zhi: “…”
Jing Zhi resisted the urge to delete this comment, turned off his phone screen, and quickened his pace.
Out of sight, out of mind.
Even deleting this comment was useless. He couldn’t delete this account, nor could he delete all traces of this account.
His streaming account was called “Little Jing XJ.” This account called “Little Jing’s Only Husband” was Jiang Suifeng.
The cause was that during several live streams, Jiang Suifeng saw account names like “Little Jing is My Wife,” “Only Love Little Jing,” and “Little Jing’s Exclusive XX” in the chat. He was jealous for a long time and secretly changed his name to this, active in all his videos and live streams.
Mixed in with a crowd of strange fan names, it didn’t seem particularly abrupt.
No one knew their relationship.
Fortunately, no one knew their relationship.
…
Because of the top comment from Jiang Suifeng’s account, Jing Zhi’s mood was still affected. He didn’t have much appetite during lunch.
Afraid the little cub would notice something wrong, he forced himself to finish the food on his plate.
In the afternoon, there was work to be done in the welfare institute. He didn’t dare look at his phone, so he devoted himself wholeheartedly to volunteer work, busy without stopping, leaving no time to think about those random things.
In the afternoon, Jing Mimi went to Big Black’s place with Wang Qiuqiu.
An auntie adopting a kitten came to take the kitten home.
The lucky cat was the pure black one, almost merging with Big Black when lying on him.
The auntie prepared an air carrier, carefully put the kitten inside, chatted briefly with the welfare institute staff, and left.
Before leaving, she donated one hundred yuan to the welfare institute, saying it was the “betrothal gift” for the cat. Spending some money would bless the kitten with a life free of illness and disaster.
Jing Mimi was still afraid of Big Black and didn’t dare get too close. He just watched from afar, praying that this kitten could start a happy cat life.
After the little black cat was put into the air carrier, Wang Qiuqiu returned to Jing Mimi’s side, feeling a bit melancholy in his heart.
One less cat to pet.
In the following days, the other two kittens were also taken away by adopters one after another. Wang Qiuqiu had absolutely no cats to pet anymore, so he could only rub Jing Mimi’s hair every day.
Fortunately, there was still a little friend from Planet Meow.
…
Another Friday came. Fang Yuan had made an appointment early to come to the welfare institute the next day to continue telling stories to the children, and by the way, forcibly take Jing Zhi to see a psychiatrist.
But his plan didn’t go smoothly; he didn’t even get to see Jing Zhi’s face.
On Friday night, Jing Mimi suddenly felt itchy. The next morning, he found many red rashes on his body. During breakfast, he suddenly vomited and had diarrhea.
Jing Zhi immediately took him to the hospital with the welfare institute staff.
On the way to the hospital, because of carsickness, the little cub looked even worse, snuggling against Papa and whimpering softly.
Just then, Jing Zhi’s phone suddenly vibrated with an untimely call.
It was an unlisted phone number.
Jing Zhi just glanced at it and rejected it without thinking.
