Chapter 24: Meow
Because of that bad call earlier, Jing Mimi now hung up the phone cleanly and efficiently, without any hesitation.
Bad calls should be hung up immediately!
It happened suddenly, and both Jing Zhi and Jiang Suifeng were stunned, but they reacted quickly.
Tacitly, Jiang Suifeng started coaxing Mimi, while Jing Zhi picked up his phone to explain to Fang Yuan.
Jing Zhi: [Mimi hung up. He hates rodents now and gets unhappy when he sees them.]
Jing Zhi didn’t explain to Fang Yuan that Mimi started hating them after watching Tom and Jerry, fearing Fang Yuan would worry again and drag him to see a psychiatrist. After all, if Mimi wasn’t a kitten, generally speaking, he wouldn’t substitute himself so much into Tom’s perspective.
Anyway, there was no need to force Fang Yuan to believe this; just interacting normally was fine.
Fang Yuan broke down: [Didn’t he think hamsters were cute last time?]
Jing Zhi: [People are fickle.]
Cats too.
Fang Yuan was silent for a moment: [Will he ignore me completely next time we meet?]
Jing Zhi: [I’ll explain to him. Kids forget easily, don’t worry.]
Fang Yuan sent him a “Crying Cat Head” emoji and said: [Christmas and New Year are coming soon. The welfare institute will hold some activities. I’ll rent a cat mascot costume. I don’t believe I can’t coax him this time.]
Jing Zhi: [I think that works.]
Fang Yuan had quite a few ideas. Mimi would definitely be very happy to see a cat mascot costume.
Fang Yuan: [Don’t tell him first, give him a surprise then.]
Jing Zhi: [Okok.]
Fang Yuan sighed: [Going to feed the hamster. I originally thought if Mimi liked the hamster, I’d give it to you guys to raise. Looks like I can only keep it in the office myself.]
Jing Zhi: [That’s good too. That student can look at the hamster when asking questions in your office, motivating her studies.]
Fang Yuan: [Speaking of this, I’m dying… Went to the welfare institute twice. Just now a student came to the office to ask me a question, and I subconsciously answered them in the tone I use with the kids at the welfare institute several times. I feel like the way they look at me has changed.]
Jing Zhi couldn’t help laughing: [Secretly working as a kindergarten teacher behind students’ backs and getting caught.]
Fang Yuan: [Reputation ruined already.]
Fang Yuan: [Bye bye.]
Jing Zhi smiled and turned off his phone screen. Looking up, he saw Jiang Suifeng looking at him.
Their eyes met, and Jiang Suifeng said abruptly, “What are you talking about with him? Smiling so happily.”
Jing Zhi: “…”
Jing Zhi wiped the smile off his face, too lazy to deal with him, and continued eating.
There was clearly no vinegar in the dinner, yet he smelled a sour scent.
Jiang Suifeng hadn’t seen Jing Zhi smile so happily for a long time.
At first, it was because Mimi was critically ill and passed away, and their moods were very depressed. Later, when he came back from his business trip and Mimi returned as a human cub, Jing Zhi’s mood finally wasn’t so low, but his attitude towards him was still indifferent. It was rare for him to even curl his lips slightly at him.
But now he was smiling so happily at someone else and ignoring him.
Jiang Suifeng was dying of jealousy.
Jing Mimi was eating while watching Rainbow Cat & Blue Rabbit: Legend of the Seven Swords on Jiang Suifeng’s phone, and his mood finally improved a bit.
The Cat Hero was just too cool!
He also wanted to be a chivalrous kitten!
Just as he was thinking, the Cat God’s voice sounded in his head after a long absence: “You can. There is a cat abuser in your family’s community. When your papas take Mimi back, we can see if there’s a chance to catch him.”
Cat abuser?!
Jing Mimi was instantly fired up.
He hated people who bullied cats the most because the kitten Mimi used to be one of the victims.
Needless to say about the first owner, during the days of wandering after being abandoned, he also encountered people who threw stones at him and kicked him.
The Cat God added: “But Mimi is still too small now. Your own safety is the most important. Don’t be too hasty. If necessary, you can also find capable helpers to be chivalrous together.”
Jing Mimi instantly thought of Brother Qiuqiu.
Brother Qiuqiu was the most powerful child he knew; even that scary big black dog obeyed his commands.
If he needed a helper, Brother Qiuqiu was the most suitable.
The Cat God smiled with satisfaction, its long tail swaying happily.
A ready-made police dog, use it or lose it.
Dogs were born to be minions for cats.
…
After dinner, Jing Zhi simply packed up the lunch boxes, preparing to go downstairs to throw them away and digest food on the way.
Originally, he wanted to take Mimi down with him, but Mimi was too engrossed in the cartoon and even pulled the child in the next bed to watch together, so he gave up.
Jiang Suifeng had already packed his takeout bag, observing Jing Zhi’s movements, ready to follow at any time.
Jing Zhi gave him a look and strode out of the ward.
The big tail behind him followed synchronously.
It was already dark outside after dinner. It seemed to be snowing a little again, not heavily, not very clear through the window glass.
After December, there should be a few heavy snows in January.
Walking further away, Jiang Suifeng couldn’t wait to ask, “Little Jing, what did Auntie say to you today? She seems to like Mimi quite a bit.”
It could be seen from Mimi’s description of Grandma.
Jing Zhi looked straight ahead and answered lightly, “She said men are unreliable, but children are different.”
Jiang Suifeng: “…”
He almost forgot Auntie was also a different kind of “keeping the son and letting the father go.”
The elevator luckily stopped on this floor, and the doors opened as soon as the down button was pressed.
Jing Zhi walked straight in, and Jiang Suifeng followed quickly.
It was a space with just the two of them again.
Before Jiang Suifeng could say anything, Jing Zhi suddenly spoke again: “But now that she has a grandson, she can’t be bothered to manage me anymore.”
Jiang Suifeng was stunned for a few seconds, then a bright light of surprise burst in his eyes.
Is it what I think it means?!
Jiang Suifeng felt his heart beating so fast that he could go straight to the nearest ICU.
Jing Zhi kept looking straight ahead, staring at the gap in the elevator doors, but he didn’t need eyes to feel the reaction of the person beside him.
He really wanted to use “there’s nothing to hide about this kind of thing” as an excuse. It wasn’t like just because his mother accepted him being with Jiang Suifeng, they could really be together.
But he couldn’t deny it—he still softened his heart.
He still hoped for a slim miracle to happen.
He didn’t know what else to do, so he could only pin his hopes on the other half.
The elevator stopped suddenly, the feeling of weightlessness disappeared abruptly. A second before the doors opened, Jiang Suifeng finally spoke with his wildly beating heart: “Little Jing, Mimi is back. Let’s be together properly, raise Mimi together, and not separate anymore, okay?”
Jing Zhi pursed his lips tighter, afraid Jiang Suifeng would see clues in his expression, left a sentence “The problem wasn’t with me anyway,” and walked directly out of the elevator.
Jiang Suifeng followed like a tail again.
“I will handle my family matters as soon as possible. The previous situation won’t happen again.”
“I’ll go tell Grandpa later that we adopted a child and see his reaction.”
“Maybe he thinks the same as Auntie.”
Jing Zhi remained silent.
Actually, both of them knew clearly that Grandpa Jiang’s situation was different from Jing Zhi’s mother’s. Even if they told Grandpa Jiang, he might not be able to accept it.
But if Jiang Suifeng wanted to try, he wouldn’t stop him or pour cold water on him.
They had worked hard for so many years; this bit didn’t matter.
After throwing the trash in his hand into the trash can, Jing Zhi turned to Jiang Suifeng and said, “I won’t let Mimi suffer any grievances.”
Implication: He wouldn’t reconcile with Jiang Suifeng before there was a result. If there was no result, he would stick to his previous decision.
“I know.” Jiang Suifeng didn’t say any more pretty words.
Any pretty words couldn’t compare to a good result.
He didn’t want Mimi to suffer any grievances either.
Even less did he want Jing Zhi to suffer any more grievances.
…
Back in the ward, Jing Zhi replaced Jiang Suifeng’s phone with his own for the two children to watch cartoons.
Jiang Suifeng’s phone was running low on battery. There were power bank rental machines in the hospital, but Jing Zhi issued an eviction order directly.
There was no place for Jiang Suifeng to rest here, and Bai Ying didn’t know their true relationship. It would be too strange for Jiang Suifeng to stay, which might cause unnecessary trouble.
Jiang Suifeng never made a fuss about serious matters. Knowing it wasn’t appropriate for him to stay tonight, he didn’t insist, just softening his voice and saying, “Let’s add each other on WeChat. It’ll be convenient to contact when I want to visit Mimi at the welfare institute later.”
Jing Zhi’s lips moved, but he still agreed. However, the phone was with Mimi, so he said to add later.
Jiang Suifeng wasn’t afraid he would change his mind. Since he agreed, if worst came to worst, he would use a little trick to let Mimi add him using Jing Zhi’s phone.
After saying goodbye to Mimi, Jiang Suifeng left the hospital.
As soon as he left the hospital, he couldn’t wait to send a message to his grandfather.
[Grandpa, Little Jing and I are planning to adopt a child. The procedures can be completed next month. The kitten’s death and the text message you sent have already caused him great harm. If you have any emotions, direct them at me. Please don’t disturb him and our child again.]
After the message was sent, he didn’t get a reply quickly, nor did he receive any calls.
Jiang Suifeng wasn’t in a hurry; after all, it wasn’t an urgent matter.
It wasn’t until he took a taxi to his doorstep that he suddenly received a message.
Jiang Yuanyuan: [Brother, Grandpa came to City A today. He said he wasn’t feeling well, and the doctor suggested checking at a hospital here. I picked him up to my place.]
Jiang Yuanyuan: [Grandpa just left in anger, saying he’s going to stay with his comrade-in-arms. Ahhhh, what to do…]
Jiang Yuanyuan was his cousin, studying at Medical University A, currently interning. She rented an apartment near the hospital where she interned and lived alone.
Jiang Suifeng had always had a good relationship with her, both before and after coming out. Even during the years she studied at Medical University A, he and Jing Zhi had treated her to meals.
No other reason—Jiang Yuanyuan was a senior fujoshi (rotten girl), and her happiest thing every day was shipping BL couples.
During the New Year these past few years, Jiang Yuanyuan often defended him when the family nagged him. Although it didn’t have much effect, Jiang Suifeng saw it all.
Staring at these two messages, Jiang Suifeng thought to himself that Grandpa was indeed too hard to accept it.
Jiang Suifeng was just about to reply “Don’t worry, I’ll handle it,” but before his message could be sent, he received another new message from her.
Jiang Yuanyuan: [Sigh, I should have put away my BL manga. The content is quite explicit. I don’t know how much Grandpa saw. Don’t tell me I angered him into high blood pressure.]
Jiang Suifeng: “…?”
