Chapter 40: Meow
Jing Mimi had nothing to fear except dogs.
Or perhaps he was fearless because he didn’t know better—many people were bold when they were young, but became more timid as they grew older because they knew more and feared more things in the world.
Facing this zombie transformed from the dummy grandpa who had shown him kindness, Jing Mimi couldn’t feel any fear at all.
Zombies walked very slowly and couldn’t catch up with an agile kitten.
But Big Papa was coming soon. He still remembered what Little Papa said last night: he had to protect Big Papa and not let Big Papa be scared by zombies.
And there were many other children in the welfare institute; he had to protect them too!
Just as Jing Mimi was pondering how to catch the zombie grandpa, the zombie grandpa had already come very close to him and spoke carefully: “Little friend, where is the kitchen here?”
Grandpa Jiang was carrying a bag in his hand, containing flour, eggs, and green vegetables, which he bought specially on the way here.
He didn’t know if Mimi still remembered him, but he noticed that Mimi saw him very early on but didn’t greet him proactively, and his expression was wooden, so he felt a bit uneasy.
So, he tried to initiate a topic.
Jing Mimi guessed the zombie grandpa might be hungry and wanted to go to the kitchen to eat.
At the same time, he breathed a sigh of relief. It seemed the zombie grandpa hadn’t completely lost his mind; otherwise, he wouldn’t want to go to the kitchen to eat, but would eat children one by one directly.
Jing Mimi’s little brain spun, and he immediately had an idea. “I’ll take you there.”
Grandpa Jiang nodded in a very good mood.
Jing Mimi kept a certain distance from the zombie grandpa, looking back at him every now and then, afraid he would lose him.
At the same time, he pulled the kitten hat knitted by Grandma on his head to protect his little head, because zombies liked to eat human brains.
The zombie grandpa moved very slowly, just like some ordinary zombies in Plants vs. Zombies, so he shouldn’t be hard to deal with.
Seeing the little guy looking back to wait for him every now and then, very thoughtful, Grandpa Jiang’s mood improved even more.
He was going all out today.
He wondered if he would meet Jing Zhi here…
But today was Jiang Suifeng’s birthday. He knew he was coming to the welfare institute to celebrate with Jing Zhi and Jing Mimi. Since he was here, he still wanted to make him a bowl of longevity noodles. He should be able to borrow the kitchen in the welfare institute.
Of course, he also wanted to see Mimi, afraid Mimi would forget him.
Even if he met Jing Zhi, he had to bite the bullet. Waiting until discharge would be too long.
Besides the big kitchen in the cafeteria, Sunflower Welfare Institute also had small kitchens built to cultivate children’s independent living abilities.
Children as young as Jing Mimi only participated in simple and safe links, such as learning to recognize kitchenware, washing vegetables, and making dumplings.
Older children could handle cooking rice and stir-frying dishes.
Jing Mimi took Grandpa to a small kitchen. No one was using it at the moment; it was empty.
Seeing the zombie grandpa walk in, Jing Mimi slammed the door of the small kitchen shut with a “bang.”
There was a key hanging outside the door. Jing Mimi skillfully turned it twice, locking the zombie grandpa inside.
Grandpa Jiang, hearing the noise: “?!!”
Grandpa Jiang turned around quickly, tried pressing the door handle, and panicked completely after finding the door wouldn’t open.
“Little friend, why did you lock Grandpa inside?”
Jing Mimi didn’t answer his question. When a kitten didn’t want to pay attention to people, it wouldn’t speak.
Afraid someone would accidentally open the door, Jing Mimi pulled out the key, stuffed it into his pocket, and ran away like a wisp of smoke.
He wanted to see if Papa was back and tell Papa that he caught a zombie.
…
When Jiang Suifeng received the call from his grandfather, he was taking a shower at home.
He had been accompanying Grandpa in the hospital at night recently. The bathroom in the hospital wasn’t very good, and he didn’t sweat in winter, so he just washed up simply and hadn’t showered for a few days.
Today was his birthday. He was going to the welfare institute to celebrate with his boyfriend and cub, so he wanted to wash himself clean and tidy up properly.
Seeing it was a call from Grandpa, Jiang Suifeng inexplicably had a bad premonition. He wiped the water off his hand casually and answered it.
He had told Grandpa about celebrating his birthday at the welfare institute today. Logically speaking, Grandpa wouldn’t call him suddenly at this time, as it might disturb him.
The call connected, and Grandpa’s strange voice sounded on the other end: “Suifeng, save me.”
Jiang Suifeng: “?”
…
Jing Zhi received a call from Jiang Suifeng on his way back with the cake.
“Little Jing, Grandpa secretly went to the welfare institute again. He also bought some flour and stuff, wanting to borrow the welfare institute’s kitchen to make me a bowl of longevity noodles. Mimi somehow took him to the kitchen and locked him inside.”
Jing Zhi had the same reaction as Jiang Suifeng, a big question mark above his head.
Jiang Suifeng: “I’m coming over right away. Wait for me.”
“Okay.” Jing Zhi didn’t go in directly after arriving at the welfare institute gate. He sat in the guard room waiting for Jiang Suifeng, forced to watch a popular drama playing on the guard’s phone for a while.
The plot had progressed to the protagonists getting together, kissing passionately on camera, wishing their mouths were glued together with superglue.
The guard watched with relish, but Jing Zhi had things on his mind and wasn’t interested.
Mimi had always been a well-behaved and polite child, never mischievous. He couldn’t figure out why he would lock Grandpa Jiang in the kitchen.
Such behavior was excessive. The person locked inside would be scared and helpless.
Fortunately, Grandpa Jiang carried a phone with him and could contact the outside world. Some elderly people didn’t have the habit of carrying phones, and accidents could happen.
When he saw Mimi later, he must have a good talk with him.
Thinking about this, a familiar figure appeared behind the transparent window of the guard room.
Jiang Suifeng took a taxi directly, saving the time to go to the parking lot, and could walk with Jing Zhi for a long way from the gate.
Jing Zhi immediately stood up carrying the cake box.
Jiang Suifeng quickly filled out the registration information, naturally took the cake from Jing Zhi’s hand, and walked into the welfare institute with him.
They went to Jing Zhi’s dormitory first, thinking of putting down the cake before going to the kitchen to find Grandpa. The cake was a bit big and would be in the way.
Unexpectedly, as soon as they arrived outside the dormitory, they saw a small figure rushing straight towards them.
“Papa!”
The little guy’s face showed a surprised expression.
Jing Zhi and Jiang Suifeng exchanged glances. Jiang Suifeng put the cake in his hand on the table in the dormitory. Jing Zhi picked up Jing Mimi and was about to ask something when he heard him say hurriedly: “Papa, I caught a zombie!”
Jing Zhi, who originally wanted to lecture the little guy: “…?”
Jing Zhi felt like he knew the reason why Grandpa Jiang was locked in the kitchen.
Mimi didn’t lock Grandpa Jiang inside out of malice or mischief.
Jiang Suifeng said that Grandpa Jiang fell in the snow when fleeing that day, twisting his waist and ankle, so he should be limping when walking.
And zombies walk with a limp, looking weird and different from normal humans.
…Mimi most likely misunderstood that Grandpa Jiang had turned into a zombie.
And he joked last night asking the little guy to protect Big Papa because Big Papa was timid. Jiang Suifeng was coming to the welfare institute to celebrate his birthday today. Mimi was afraid the zombie grandpa would scare him, so he locked him up.
Jiang Suifeng put down the cake, returned to the door, and said to Jing Zhi holding Jing Mimi, “What’s the situation?”
For a moment, Jing Zhi didn’t know where to start explaining.
Jing Mimi spoke first again: “Big Papa, you stay here, don’t wander around. It’s safe here.”
Jiang Suifeng: “?”
Safe here… Does that mean there’s danger elsewhere?
Jiang Suifeng looked at Jing Mimi, then at Jing Zhi, completely confused.
Jing Zhi took a deep breath, his voice helpless: “Let’s go, let’s go see the zombie together.”
Jiang Suifeng: “??” What?
…
Afraid Big Papa would be scared by the zombie, Jing Mimi held Jing Zhi’s hand and walked in front of him. The big one and the little one firmly protected him behind them.
Like the Wall-nut in Plants vs. Zombies. He was a Small-nut, Little Papa was a Tall-nut, protecting Big Papa from being bullied by zombies together.
Jiang Suifeng was the tallest of the three but was protected behind, inevitably looking a bit comical.
He guessed Jing Zhi must have said something to Mimi, like he was timid.
He would ask him properly later.
Finally arriving at the place where “Zombie Grandpa” was detained, Jing Mimi pointed to the kitchen door and said, “The zombie is inside, locked up by me.”
Jing Zhi looked at the lock and asked, “Where’s the key?”
Jing Mimi took the key out of his pocket and handed it to Little Papa.
Jing Zhi immediately inserted the key into the lock hole, turned it twice, and unlocked the door.
Seeing this, Jing Mimi quickly grabbed Jiang Suifeng’s big hand and pulled him towards the room opposite, his voice anxious: “Big Papa, hide quickly, don’t be scared by the zombie.”
Jiang Suifeng: “…”
The soundproofing here wasn’t that good. The old man inside should have heard the conversation outside. Wonder what his mood was now.
Before Jiang Suifeng could successfully “hide,” the two locks were opened, and the door was pushed open by Jing Zhi.
Inside, Grandpa Jiang was pouring flour onto the cutting board, adding water to knead it into dough.
He heard all the noise outside and roughly knew the reason why he was locked up.
…
Since things had come to this, let’s knead the dough first.
