Chapter 5: Meow
The Cat God watched all of this but didn’t stop it in time.
It was the same old saying—as long as Mimi was restrained from voluntarily revealing or personally admitting his identity as a kitten, no matter how suspicious his papas were, they wouldn’t find direct evidence that he was the kitten Mimi.
After all, he was just a four-year-old cub now. It was normal to have some strange behaviors; children were just weird sometimes.
To let his Papa accept him in his human form again, it didn’t matter if he showed a few traces of Mimi the kitten.
Even if his Papa guessed the connection between him and Mimi, he couldn’t prove it to anyone else, so it wouldn’t disrupt the order of Earth.
There had been cases before where humans regarded newborns as the reincarnation of their deceased pets, interpreting some of the newborn’s actions as those of the pet when it was alive. But in reality, the pets had already gone to their own planet and hadn’t turned into those newborns.
Even if Mimi’s Papa concluded that he was Mimi, in the eyes of outsiders, they would just think he missed Mimi too much and projected his feelings onto the little cub.
It was a loophole.
However, after Mimi mimicked his old habit of scratching at the litter by scratching the bedsheet a few times with his small hands, the Cat God still quietly reminded him: “You can cover your tummy to remind Papa that your tummy is uncomfortable and you want to go to the toilet.”
Besides Mimi’s Papa, there was a strange family of three in the ward, so it was better to be careful.
Mimi followed the Cat God’s instructions perfectly, retracting his small hands and covering his little tummy.
Jing Zhi roughly understood that he might want to use the toilet, but the way he scratched the bedsheet with his small hands just now still aroused a bit of suspicion.
However, because it was too absurd, even if he was suspicious, he dared not verify it easily and could only suppress it in his heart.
Jing Zhi put down the almost finished porridge bowl and asked him, “Do you want to go to the toilet?”
Jing Mimi nodded his little head quickly.
Jing Zhi raised his eyebrows slightly.
He can understand human language.
Then was he ignoring all those questions I asked earlier on purpose?
…
Or maybe he just didn’t know how to answer. At this age, he might not necessarily remember his home address or his parents’ phone numbers.
For some reason, Jing Zhi just couldn’t get angry with him, nor did he want to blame him for anything. He directly carried him to the bedside and put on his shoes for him.
He didn’t know if the little guy could put on shoes by himself, but rather than letting him do it slowly, it was faster to help him directly. Besides, he was still sick and uncomfortable, needing care.
Jing Mimi lowered his eyes, watching Papa put on his shoes, feeling like he was back in the days when Papa put beautiful clothes on the kitten Mimi at home.
At that time, Big Papa was also there, surrounding him with Little Papa.
He wondered where Big Papa was now…
Would he come here to pick up Mimi and Little Papa?
He knew this was a hospital. When he was a kitten, he had stayed in a pet hospital too, though the pet hospital was smaller. Back then, the kitten Mimi looked forward to his papas taking him home every day.
The Cat God comforted him: “Don’t rush, handle Little Papa first. Once Little Papa takes Mimi back, everything will be easy to handle. Take it step by step.”
Just then, both shoes were put on.
Immediately after, Jing Zhi lifted the little cub onto the floor.
The next second, the little guy performed a flat-ground fall right in front of him.
Thump.
Jing Zhi: “?!”
The floor was clean, without any water stains or anything that might cause a slip.
Before Jing Zhi could go to help, the little guy had already propped himself up with both hands and knelt up.
The fall had made quite a noise, yet he didn’t cry or fuss.
Jing Zhi immediately squatted down to check on him. Seeing no injuries, he felt relieved and asked, “Is your leg numb?”
Jing Mimi blinked his eyes, proactively grabbed the hand Jing Zhi extended, and used the leverage to wobble back to his feet.
This was his first time standing with this body, and he wasn’t quite used to it, so he accidentally fell.
But the feeling of standing wasn’t bad. When he was a kitten, he would occasionally raise his two front paws and stand on his two hind paws. After standing once, he grasped it quickly and could stand up smoothly on his own.
Jing Zhi carefully protected him, afraid he would fall again.
Unexpectedly, the small hand tightly grasped his hand and wouldn’t let go.
Jing Zhi didn’t shake it off either; he just led him by the hand to the bathroom in the ward.
In a place Jing Zhi couldn’t hear, the Cat God was diligently teaching Mimi how to walk on two legs: “When I say one, move your left foot. When I say two, move your right foot. One, two, one, two… Okay, stop!”
Although he had no tail for balance, with Papa holding his small hand for support, Mimi steadily learned to walk on human legs.
The Cat God praised him: “You are a kitten with a talent for being human.”
There was both a toilet and a squat toilet in the bathroom. Jing Mimi was brought in front of them.
The Cat God continued to instruct Mimi: “Stand and take off your pants. Just use the squat toilet on the right. Be careful not to make a mess outside.”
Jing Mimi listened in confusion but roughly understood what to do. However, executing it for the first time was inevitably a bit clumsy.
Jing Zhi had seen some kindergarten teachers sharing their daily lives online, mentioning that some children didn’t know to take off their pants when using the toilet and would just “solve” it in their pants. Seeing the little guy didn’t move immediately, fearing the same would happen, he proactively helped him take off his pants.
Jing Mimi instantly felt a chill on his bottom.
Papa’s voice followed: “Go ahead.”
Jing Mimi swallowed nervously. Following the Cat God’s instructions in his head, he walked to the squat toilet and began to relieve himself with a serious expression.
Jing Zhi stood behind him watching, one hand loosely holding his collar, afraid he would lose his balance and fall again.
A flat-ground fall was fine, but he absolutely couldn’t fall here.
Mimi didn’t feel shy. When he was a kitten, Papa often watched him use the litter box and would even praise him for burying his waste well, without splashing a single grain of litter outside the box.
Actually, this was a habit formed a long time ago, long before he met Papa.
Back then, if the kitten Mimi accidentally scratched the litter too hard and it went outside the box, he would be beaten. The weak kitten couldn’t resist and could only obey.
Later, after being praised by his papas many times, the kitten Mimi gradually forgot that unpleasant memory.
After finishing, Jing Mimi tried to pull up his pants by himself, not letting Papa do it for him.
Even when he was a kitten, he buried his own waste. Now that there was no litter to bury, he had to put on his pants himself and not trouble Papa too much.
Watching this scene, a hint of satisfaction appeared in Jing Zhi’s eyes.
But soon, seeing the little cub take his hand and turn to leave, Jing Zhi’s voice sounded again: “You have to flush after using the toilet. Didn’t your dad teach you that?”
As he spoke, he pressed the flush button, and the sound of rushing water filled the bathroom.
He asked this intentionally. First, he wanted to use the word “dad” to provoke a reaction, hoping to gain some information to help find his family. Second, flushing after using the toilet was common sense, and since he was a boy, his father should have taught him this.
Jing Mimi paused, looked up with his small head, and gazed at Jing Zhi with round, watery eyes. Then he looked at the place Jing Zhi had just pressed and snuggled up to him coquettishly.
Papa was teaching him.
He would remember to flush next time.
Being stared at by those clear amber eyes, Jing Zhi unconsciously pressed his tongue against his teeth.
…Forget it.
His parents were most likely not qualified parents anyway; otherwise, there wouldn’t be zero news after so long.
Moreover, the little cub hadn’t shown the slightest intention of looking for his family since waking up. He really wondered what kind of family it was.
What could such a small child understand?
It was all the parents’ fault.
Just like the night he and Jiang Suifeng found Mimi and brought him home. Before they had time to buy cat supplies, including a litter box, Mimi suddenly started yowling in the middle of the night, waking him and Jiang Suifeng up. The two of them were flustered for a long time, not knowing what was wrong, and had to rush him to the pet hospital.
It was already early morning. The doctor at the only nearby pet hospital with someone on duty examined Mimi and finally placed him in a litter box.
Mimi finally stopped yowling and started using the litter box. It seemed he had been holding it in badly.
The two inexperienced prospective parents were teased by the doctor for a long time and finally returned with the kitten, newly bought litter, and a litter box.
The flushing sound stopped quickly. Jing Zhi shook off the memories surging in his mind, quickly took the little cub’s hand, led him to the sink to wash his hands with clean water, and left the place.
As soon as the bathroom door opened, a soft, cute voice suddenly sounded in the ward: “Meow~”
Jing Zhi’s Adam’s apple bobbed quickly.
After Mimi died, he found it hard to listen to cat meows.
Jing Mimi’s eyes lit up instantly. He looked towards the source of the sound and found that the cat meow came from the tablet in the hands of the child in the next bed.
He recognized the tablet.
When he was a kitten, Papa had let him play games on it.
The game featured many moving little fish patterns. As long as the kitten’s paw hit them, fireworks would explode. He loved playing that game, and Papa always held him in his arms to play with him.
When he was a kitten, he had also heard some cat meows from Papa’s phone and tablet. At that time, he curled his little tail and felt sad for a while, thinking Papa had another kitten.
After becoming human, he realized that those were just audio recordings, not real kittens, and wouldn’t take away Papa’s love.
Before he could observe for too long, his body suddenly felt light.
It was Papa picking him up.
He liked being held by Papa, but before he could enjoy it for long, he was placed at the foot of the bed where the child playing with the tablet was.
Jing Zhi looked at the little girl’s parents and said to them, “Could you please help keep an eye on this child? I’m going outside to call the police. I found him last night, and his family still hasn’t contacted me.”
The little girl’s parents immediately agreed, telling him to hurry and contact the police.
Listening to the cat meows coming from the tablet beside his ear, Jing Zhi fled the ward and closed the door.
Finally isolating the sound behind the door, he raised his hand and pressed his aching chest. He dared not take a deep breath, fearing it would trigger nerve pain, so he could only maintain short, shallow breaths.
Mental pain could spread physically to every organ, even producing a feeling of dry heaving.
After finally calming down for a while, he pressed one hand between his chest and abdomen, took out his phone from his pocket with the other, and dialed the police.
The calm, official voice of the operator gradually smoothed his fluctuating emotions. He recounted the entire process of finding the little cub and provided the hospital ward address and his personal information.
Police officers would come later. After handing over to the police, his part should be done.
He also had to hurry back to pack his things; it would be best to move out tonight.
Hanging up the phone, Jing Zhi turned, pressed the door handle, and returned to the ward.
It seemed the two children were getting along well; they were already sitting together watching the tablet.
Seeing Jing Zhi return, the little cub immediately raised his amber eyes, staring at him unblinkingly as if afraid he would disappear. His round eyes gradually curved into two little crescents.
He looked even cuter when he smiled.
After Jing Zhi approached, the little cub’s lips suddenly moved, and he smiled as he uttered a short, soft sound to him:
“Meow.”
