Chapter 9: Meow p2
Sheriff soon became the darling of the station. The originally thin cat was fed until it was much plumper, and its belly grew bigger and bigger. Everyone was waiting for its babies to be born.
Just then, the Golden Apple Case happened.
The name of the case was related to the “Golden Apple Kindergarten.”
It was a private kindergarten located in a remote small county in the province. Under the guise of a kindergarten, it secretly provided hiding places and trading venues for traffickers of women and children. Because many children and parents came in and out every day, it didn’t easily arouse suspicion. Even the school bus provided by the school for picking up and dropping off children daily was one of the “tools of the crime.”
In this case, besides children, several young women were also trafficked.
One of the women was pregnant. The child belonged to her husband, whom she had just married before being abducted. She wasn’t showing yet, and she didn’t dare let the traffickers know, fearing they would think a pregnant woman wouldn’t fetch a good price and would just dispose of her.
It was precisely because she secretly sent out a distress message that Captain Chen, who was still Little Chen at the time, led a team to wipe out this den and the gang behind it in one fell swoop.
The trafficked children and the young women were all sent home. Their families had been looking for them, especially the family of the pregnant woman, who cried their eyes out.
They brought the traffickers and those involved back to the police station one by one.
Their sins were grave, and they would receive the retribution they deserved.
When the director of the Golden Apple Kindergarten was summoned earlier, he tried to struggle and shift the blame to others. This time, realizing that a death sentence was inevitable, he suddenly attacked the police like a cornered beast. He produced a folding knife from somewhere, wielding it with great strength, wanting to take a few people down with him before dying.
Later, they found out he was on drugs. Cooperating with traffickers was also to earn dirty money to buy that stuff. He also had a murder case on his hands.
At that time, Captain Chen was closest to the director. It happened suddenly, and the scene was chaotic. He subconsciously raised his left hand to block, prepared to bleed.
Suddenly, with a fierce “Meow-ow,” a black and white figure pounced unexpectedly.
The director cried out in pain, his attention diverted, and kicked viciously at the cat biting his leg.
The cat was kicked far away, hitting the wall and whimpering in pain.
Taking the opportunity, Captain Chen subdued the man, handed him over to his colleagues, and rushed to check on the cat in the corner.
Because of this case, he hadn’t spent much time with it recently, always rushing back and leaving in a hurry.
The cat bled a lot and trembled in pain. Although it was sent to the pet hospital immediately, the babies in its belly were miscarried.
That kick was merciless, meant to kill. With internal organ damage, surviving at all was rare.
Because of this incident, Sheriff, after the miscarriage, suffered from lasting health issues. It wasn’t as lively as before, always curling up in its cat bed staring blankly, perhaps sad about the lost babies.
When he approached to pet it, it would occasionally stick out its tongue and lick his palm, much more docile than before.
There was a cat scratch on his left palm left from their first meeting.
A cat’s tongue has barbs, feeling like sandpaper rubbing against the palm, as if trying to grind away that scratch.
But because of it, there wasn’t an additional knife scar there.
He would rather have had an additional knife scar.
The Golden Apple Case ended. Those with serious offenses were sentenced to death, including the director, and the rest were sentenced to fixed-term or life imprisonment.
And he went from Little Chen to Captain Chen.
The media praised him and his colleagues for rescuing so many children and families. All the children in the Golden Apple Case returned home safely; they were great heroes.
He, however, silently stroked the kitten’s belly.
The belly was flat, with traces of post-operative stitches.
They didn’t know that a brave little female cat police officer lost her children in this case.
At the end of that winter, Sheriff passed away.
Stray cats have short lifespans. Before becoming Sheriff, it had wandered for many years, and its body already had some problems. Coupled with the miscarriage and injury, it only saw the snow of City A for one more year thanks to meticulous care.
Unlike every previous year, this winter wasn’t cold. It had a warm nest, delicious food, and colleagues to keep it company.
It slept forever in the warm winter.
Not long after Sheriff passed away, a family of three suddenly traveled from their distant hometown at the beginning of the new year to visit him and present him with a silk banner.
It was the pregnant woman from the Golden Apple Case. Her child had been born safely, a lovely baby.
After seeing them off, he leaned against the wall, staring at the mound of earth in the yard where the kitten was buried for a long time, then lowered his head to touch the scratch on his palm.
Winter went and spring came. City A remained dry, and the scar on his palm cracked repeatedly.
It hurt a little.
…
Captain Chen picked and chose, avoiding some bloody and violent scenes, and told the story of this brave little female cat police officer to the little cub in a fairy-tale tone.
After listening, Jing Mimi decided not to hold a grudge against the tuxedo cat for bullying him anymore.
It was very brave, very amazing, a wonderful Cat Sheriff.
Just a little bit psycho, only a tiny bit.
Remembering the mission, he quickly unscrewed the cap of the hand cream, squeezed out a bit of the milky white cream, and carefully applied it to the hand with the cat scratch.
Captain Chen was stunned. Feeling the gentle force spreading the cream evenly on his hand, an indescribable sourness welled up in his heart.
No one found his action strange; after all, he had applied cream to himself and Jing Zhi before this.
Children and small animals possess the purest souls in the world.
The small figure applying hand cream to him gradually merged with the figure of a kitten gently licking his palm with its tongue.
His eyes grew hot.
…
[Sheriff’s Wish Completed]
Planet Meow, a place invisible to humans.
Sheriff the Tuxedo Cat and a group of kittens sat in rows in front of a big cloud TV, watching the scene of the little cub applying hand cream to Captain Chen.
Sheriff the Tuxedo Cat wore the police hat woven for it by the Cat God when bringing it to Planet Meow, proudly raising its head amidst the praises of the kittens.
It was a little female cat police officer.
Eating the police station’s food, sleeping in the police station’s nest, catching the police station’s mice—punishing evil and promoting good was its duty.
Sorry, but letting a colleague get hurt was something it couldn’t do.
…
At the door, Jing Zhi and the care worker stood there, stopped by a police officer, not disturbing the story of the little female cat police officer.
Jing Zhi had heard a little about the Golden Apple Case. He was very young at the time. His mother heard about it and, worried that traffickers would abduct him, told him about the case with exaggerated details. He still had a vague impression of it.
He didn’t expect there was a brave little female cat police officer behind it.
After the hand cream was applied, Captain Chen tried asking Jing Mimi some more questions, thinking that this story might bring them closer and elicit more useful information.
But when asked about his name, origin, family, and how he appeared at Jing Zhi’s door, he fell silent again. Clutching the recapped hand cream, he lowered his little head. He showed no reaction even when shown photos of the people involved in the case.
When asked too much, he started pouting again, repeating aggrievedly: “I want Papa.”
Some children suffer from many aftereffects after trauma. Captain Chen sighed, daring not to push too hard, and decided to arrange for some professionals to come handle it and give him a thorough physical examination.
Leaving the ward, seeing Jing Zhi and the care worker stopped outside, Captain Chen nodded, signaling his subordinate to let them in.
Seeing Jing Zhi return, Jing Mimi looked up and called out in surprise: “Papa!”
He was getting more and more used to calling him by this title.
Jing Zhi didn’t correct him anymore. He walked over, sat beside him, and rubbed his little head.
The police questioning was over for now. Jing Zhi had just finished his IV drip and was still a bit weak. Jing Mimi was also listless due to the medicine and hadn’t fallen asleep.
The big patient and the little patient stuck together, really looking somewhat like a father and son.
Watching them more, the care worker inexplicably felt that the little guy’s eyebrows and mouth looked a bit like Jing Zhi’s.
Probably psychological factors at play. The child was so young and hadn’t grown into his features yet; how could anyone tell?
Jing Zhi didn’t want to sleep. He turned on his phone to check it and found the little guy also poking his head out to look at his screen. Suddenly thinking of something, he asked, “Do you want to watch cartoons? Black Cat Sheriff is very good.”
Jing Mimi nodded his little head quickly.
He wanted to watch the Cat Sheriff.
…
When Fang Yuan rushed to the hospital immediately after class, he pushed open the door to hear a familiar BGM.
“Eyes wide like copper bells, shooting out lightning-like wit, ears perked up like antennas, listening to all suspicious sounds…”
“Aha, aha, Black Cat Sheriff…”
“Salute to you, salute to you…”*
Fang Yuan: “?”

Author’s Note:
Little Cat Mi watching Cat Sheriff with Papa (Happy).
Explanation: Using “Little Female Cat Police Officer” instead of “Little Cat Police Officer” here is mainly because of a very cute animation IP, The Powerpuff Girls (Chinese title translates to Flying Little Female Police Officers), which tells the story of three little girls—Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup—upholding justice and saving the world. Animation reflects reality; in my opinion, there is no cuter title than “Little Female Cat Police Officer.” In this case, all the children returned home safely, only a pregnant cat lost her children forever. She was a police officer, and even more so a brave female. Her gender is also worth praising.
I agree and support that some titles don’t need to include gender, but in this text, I think using the title “Little Female Cat Police Officer” is better.
