Chapter 55: Side Story 3
After his birthday, Jing Ciying, still flustered by Pei Songji’s enthusiastic… advances, kept his distance.
Pei Songji, sensing his discomfort, was more restrained.
His restraint was also partly due to a severe flu. He was working from home, much to Jing Ciying’s concern, who barely went to the office, rushing home to take care of him.
Pei Songji tried to dissuade him, but Jing Ciying was insistent.
One night, Pei Songji, still working late despite his illness, needed a document.
“I’ll go,” Jing Ciying offered, not wanting him to go out.
“No.”
“Then you’re not going either.”
Pei Songji gave him the key. “Second row, third cabinet.”
He drove to Pei Group, retrieving the document, but as he pulled it out, he accidentally dislodged a few others. He was about to put them back when he saw one titled Notarized Agreement. Curiosity overriding his anxiety, he opened it and froze.
Pei Songji was still working when he returned. “You’re back.”
“Yes.” He forced a smile, handing over the document. Pei Songji, preoccupied, didn’t notice his unusual demeanor.
Jing Ciying stood there for a moment, then quietly went to bed, the discovery of the agreement, transferring all of Pei Songji’s assets to him, weighing heavily on his mind.
The next morning, Pei Songji noticed his quietness. “What’s wrong?”
Jing Ciying seemed to snap out of it. “Nothing.” He tried to leave, but Pei Songji gently held his wrist, pulling him back. “Don’t lie to me.”
Jing Ciying was silent.
“What is it?”
“I saw it,” he admitted quietly.
“Saw what?”
“The notarized agreement.”
Pei Songji paled. He had been so careless.
“Why?”
Pei Songji knew he wouldn’t approve. He felt a surge of anxiety.
“I…”
“Did my aunt ask you to do this?”
“No. My decision. Before I even met her.”
“But she knows.”
“Yes.”
“That explains it,” Jing Ciying muttered, the pieces clicking into place.
“Why she agreed to our relationship.”
“Why you told me not to call you a capitalist.”
“But why? Did you pity me?”
“Or…” his expression changed. “Is something wrong with you?”
Seeing his concern, Pei Songji’s heart softened. “No.” He decided to be honest.
“It was to reassure me.”
“Reassure you?” Jing Ciying was confused.
“I thought… what if you stopped loving me? Maybe… if I gave you everything, you wouldn’t leave.” He chuckled. “Stupid, right?”
Jing Ciying was speechless. He had been the one pursued. Pei Songji had been so insecure he had given him everything. His heart ached.
“That will never happen,” he said, gripping Pei Songji’s hand.
Pei Songji searched his eyes.
“I’m not with you for your money. I love you. You’re the one I chose, and I’ll never leave you.”
Pei Songji’s fear dissipated.
“Really?”
“Really.”
Pei Songji embraced him gently.
“Then tell me you love me. Every day,” he whispered.
Jing Ciying blushed. “Okay. Every day.”
“Say it now.”
Jing Ciying chuckled, whispering, “I love you. Very, very much. Forever.”
Pei Songji held him tighter, his lips brushing against his ear.
“I love you too.”
