Chapter 49
“Did he agree to the interview?”
“Ask him, Manager!” The “Demon World” team was eager to see if the human who looked exactly like A-Ran was the real deal. Even if he wasn’t, the resemblance was a miracle.
“Calm down! He hasn’t replied yet! And don’t leak this information!” Tao Shu warned.
“And college students are on summer break. Shouldn’t we let the young human rest before he starts working?” he added, and everyone agreed. Compared to them, ageless demons, the human was just a baby, needing care and rest.
“This wait is killing me! I’ve been grinding so hard for those interaction cards!” a demon said.
“Read the new rules! This is a historic moment! There will be a test tomorrow! Those who fail are disqualified!” Tao Shu announced, handing out a document.
A test?! Even demons hated tests!
“Rule number one: No transforming in front of A-Ran…” Their plan to casually stroll past him as fluffy creatures, hoping for a pet, had been foiled. The forum was already filled with guides on how to gain A-Ran’s favor, his preference for fluffy creatures well-documented. Many demons were now meticulously grooming themselves, preparing for the next update.
Lin Ran, unaware of the commotion he was causing, was hesitant about the internship. Morson Group was notorious for its demanding work culture. He wanted to visit his grandparents regularly; they needed him.
But he was also intrigued by the “Demon World” development team. Working on his favorite game, learning more about it, perhaps even uncovering its secrets, seemed exciting.
[Ran: Can I think about it? The deadline isn’t until after school starts, right?][Da Ding: Sure! And by the way, your peaches are delicious! I’ll order more next year! [Grinning]][Ran: !? [Blushing]] He hadn’t expected his advisor to watch his livestream and buy his peaches, even using his nickname “Lin-zai”! Would everyone be calling him that after school started? He felt a mix of warmth and anxiety.
He hadn’t livestreamed recently, but Secretary Gu kept asking him to. His appearances doubled their sales, and he had gained a large following of “parents” online, some even asking about his relationship status, offering to set him up. Secretary Gu found it amusing, but also thought it might be good for Lin Ran to find a partner.
Meanwhile, Shao Mian, having received no response to his “peach order” friend request, received a livestream link from Shao Zi Jue:
[Don’t say I’m hiding information this time. ]
Shao Mian: ? He clicked the link, and a familiar voice made him sit up straighter.
[This is my last livestream before school starts.] The young man’s voice was gentle and soothing.
Lin Ran, slightly flustered, was arranging the juice bottles, then, prompted by Secretary Gu, looked at the camera and smiled:
[Today, we’re featuring our new fruit juice…]
He looked exactly the same! Shao Mian, captivated, stared at the screen, forgetting about the product details, only one thought in his mind: This human is adorable.
He instinctively bought the entire stock.
[Lin-zai! No link! Can’t order!][It’s sold out! In seconds?! Lin-zai, restock!] the viewers exclaimed.
“Impossible! We had a thousand boxes!” Secretary Gu said, checking the orders.
Lin Ran also looked at the order details, incredulous. “ME28171, did you accidentally buy everything? We can issue a refund.”
[Accidentally bought everything?! I wish I could do that! But my bank account says no…][I want to buy him everything, but my boss won’t let me.][Please refund some! I’ve been waiting for this juice!] The viewers assumed it was a mistake.
Then, Shao Mian finally figured out how to comment:
[ME28171: Not an accident. Please ship.]
The comments exploded with question marks. He had actually bought everything?!
[Are you serious?! Leave some for us!][Restock! I want to hear Lin-zai talk more! You’re making him end the stream early!][+1! Don’t let him leave yet!] The livestream’s popularity surged as more viewers joined, curious about the mysterious buyer.
“If you missed the juice, we have some new dried fruit. Should we add that to the store?” Lin Ran asked Secretary Gu, puzzled, but also ready to restock.
Shao Mian, reading the comments, especially the one about Lin Ran “leaving work,” had a suspicion. Was the human too busy with his livestreaming job to accept the internship offer? He hadn’t even seen his friend request! Outrageous!
As they restocked, however, the items kept selling out instantly.
[Seriously?! Leave some for us!][I can’t even compete with these whales! My bank account and my clicking speed are failing me!][Lin-zai’s a pro now! Selling out like a top streamer!] The viewers, unable to buy anything, watched in amusement as Lin Ran and Secretary Gu stared at the screen, their stunned expressions quickly becoming memes.
[ME28171: Don’t work too hard. Get some rest.] This comment made the viewers even more curious. Was this buyer interested in Lin Ran, not the products?
[This is not okay—][Is it a rich lady? Trying to buy our Lin-zai?][Secretary Gu! Protect him! He’s not for sale!]
Lin Ran: ??? He was slightly scared. It sounded like a familiar elder reminding him to sleep early.
“Do you… know me? Are you a teacher or a family member?” he asked, puzzled. Did he have a secret admirer?
Shao Mian, startled, almost thought he had been discovered. Impossible. He decided to hint at his identity.
[ME28171: Want to buy fruit for my employees, but my friend request hasn’t been accepted.] He would find a way.
[6???][His friend list is full. I added him early on, but my friends couldn’t.][So, you want to buy fruit, or befriend Lin-zai?] Lin Ran’s WeChat had been full for weeks. Was this buyer trying to buy his way into his friend list?
“Lin-zai, do you know this person?” Secretary Gu asked.
“I don’t… think so?” Lin Ran said, though the buyer’s behavior seemed strangely familiar. He couldn’t let this continue; other viewers wouldn’t get a chance to buy anything. And if this became a trend, it could be problematic.
Shao Mian, waiting smugly, was then limited to one item per purchase! Outrageous! But then, his friend request was accepted.
[Ran: Your order will be shipped. Please leave some for other viewers. Thank you for your support! [Dog sticker]] He had recognized Shao Mian’s profile picture.
Shao Mian smirked, pleased. So, even Shao Zi Jue had his contact information. But then, he checked Lin Ran’s feed and found it different from what Shao Zi Jue had shown him. Only a few official posts, none of the personal ones. He had been categorized! He felt a surge of annoyance. Different treatment inside and outside “Demon World”? He had been sure the human liked him in the game, with all that touching!
“You’re scaring him with your intensity,” Abyss said, even a small flame sprite noticing the problem.
Shao Mian ignored him, feeling annoyed. It was the second time he had been rejected by Lin Ran.
“Are those juices for the office? I want some…” Abyss asked, trying to change the subject.
Despite the unexpected turn of events, the livestream was a success, reaching a peak of 70,000 viewers, a huge achievement for a small village’s livestream.
As the stream ended, some viewers even declared their intention to apply to S University to become Lin Ran’s classmates!
“You’re welcome to visit me at school, but I’ll be doing an internship this semester,” Lin Ran said, sharing his plans. Many viewers realized he was still a student, despite his busy summer.
[Lin-zai works so hard! Good luck with school!][Studying and working must be tiring. No time for romance. OwO][He’s single! Come to S University and try your luck!]
Lin Ran quickly ended the stream, the discussion veering into his personal life. He wasn’t ready for that.
Secretary Gu and the others had prepared a farewell gift: a suitcase filled with useful items for a university student, including a laptop.
“It’s from the village. Focus on your studies; we’ll take care of things here,” Secretary Gu said, making Lin Ran feel like a high school student again, though he was already an adult. He was touched by their care.
“Time to go back to S City,” he sighed, looking at the orchard, then remembering he had to pick up Snowball. And he couldn’t forget to log into “Demon World.” He had missed a day of daily rewards, and he was close to getting his third fluffy creature. He needed to prepare a new bed and gifts. What kind of cub would it be this time?
Logging into “Demon World,” he found his territory had expanded.
“The riverbed is included now!” It was all part of Yuanbao’s golden territory. So, he had kept his promise. The plushie bribe had been effective. He wondered what Yuanbao had been doing.
He started working on the newly acquired land.
“Cheep! Cheep!” Sootball brought him a bag of seeds, watching as he planted them in the dry riverbed.
“Mew.” An Xun, using his ice magic, created irrigation channels, diverting water from the lake to the riverbed.
“Maybe next spring, this place will be filled with flowers, and we can have picnics under this tree,” Lin Ran said, planting a sapling.
“Cheep!” Sootball nodded, its little explorer hat almost falling off, quickly fixing it with its magic.
Lin Ran chuckled, adjusting Snowball’s hat too. He had made them matching yellow hats to protect them from the sun and make them easier to spot.
“One more hat. I wonder what kind of cub it will be this time. Do you have any preferences?” he asked, petting them.
“Hmm…” Sootball thought another large beast would be helpful, someone to do the heavy lifting.
“Mew?” Snowball, however, thought a demon with nature magic would be useful for gardening. He remembered seeing such demons on the forum. The new cub was lucky; A-Ran had already prepared a bed and gifts.
But as Lin Ran opened the shop, he saw the Encounter Card had been upgraded again.
[Advanced Encounter Card. Price: 10,000 gold.] From 500 for Sootball, to 3,000 for Snowball, to 10,000 now, the game’s prices were increasing exponentially. This would deplete his savings. What made this card so “advanced”?
O皿O#[A-Ran’s pained expression.jpg]
As he clicked “Purchase,” all demons with over a million contribution points received a special notification, including a small, white egg.
