Chapter 28: Special
Aier, who was standing to the side, couldn’t help but smile. She finally knew the blue-tail’s name.
“What a nice name.”
“Your tail is so beautiful.”
“You’re the most beautiful alien I’ve ever seen.”
“I hope we can get along well in the future.”
Deng Xi pursed his lips slightly and did not agree to the last sentence, because he might not be staying for long. But he curved his eyes slightly and said “thank you” for the compliments.
His opinion of humans had changed a little.
Deng Xi thought seriously, just a little. He still needed to observe. After he found the little mute and saw how he was doing, he could make a final decision.
The scene was a bit chaotic.
Aier coughed lightly. “Alright, are you all so free today?”
Someone glanced at their comm and reported, “I don’t know why, but the aliens are exceptionally quiet today. I haven’t received any news of an alien going berserk yet.”
“Me too.”
“It seems that ever since Deng Xi arrived, there’s been no news.”
“I just had some free time to come and see the new national treasure of our institute.”
Deng Xi quietly listened to their discussion and suddenly asked, “Can I… go and see the other aliens?”
Aier replied, “Of course, don’t be in a hurry. Shall we go and see your new home first?”
Deng Xi’s new home was an entire floor of an underwater world that the research institute had specially created for him. Besides the pedestrian walkways, the rest was separated by sufficiently hard, transparent tempered glass.
He leaped from the water tank into the pool and, following the walkway, dived all the way down to this entire underwater world. Besides the lack of other sea creatures, it was simulated to be no different from the ocean.
There were the coral reefs Deng Xi was familiar with, seaweed growing everywhere, and scattered shells, starfish, and small conchs hidden beneath the gray sand.
An artificial, danger-free ocean.
It gave Deng Xi an unreal, dreamlike feeling. He swam back to the surface of the pool and found a large, pearly white shell in a corner that was twice his size.
Deng Xi swam over curiously.
The appearance of the large shell was very similar to his old shell in the ocean. There were even some red coral reefs stuck on it with clay.
If it weren’t for the fact that the way it was stuck on was too clumsy, looking a bit childish and making the large shell look a bit ugly, Deng Xi would have almost thought that this was his old shell from the ocean.
Who made this?
Deng Xi swam back to the edge of the pool and asked impatiently, “Is that large shell for me?”
Aier nodded lightly. “Yes, it was specially prepared for you.”
Deng Xi’s eyes lit up. “Who gave it to me?”
Aier said, “It was someone you just met today.”
The military hadn’t told her that she couldn’t tell Deng Xi when they had sent it over. Aier smiled and said directly, “That Marshal from the military.”
What Deng Xi had thought was completely different from Aier’s answer. He was stunned for a while before he remembered the solemn side profile that had flashed by just now. His joy disappeared, and he let out a low sound of agreement, then asked curiously, “Why would he give it to me?”
Aier had also privately guessed several times, unable to understand why that person, who had always kept his distance from others, was so concerned about Deng Xi. Perhaps it was because they were of the same race, she guessed, “A housewarming gift?”
Even though it didn’t meet his expectations, Deng Xi was very polite. “Then can Aier help me thank him?”
Aier agreed, “Of course.”
“Now, let’s go and see the other aliens you’ve been wanting to see.”
Because it was inconvenient for Deng Xi to move, he quietly lay on the edge of the pool and waited for Aier to bring the aliens over.
Because the research institute, to prevent the aliens from going berserk, had specialized the magnetic field in the alien area, the aliens would generally undergo a certain degree of bestialization, and some had even completely turned into animals.
Deng Xi had just learned to recognize the human species, and was now dazzled by all kinds of new species. He asked Aier like a curious baby what this was, what that was.
Aier’s gaze on Deng Xi became stranger and stranger.
Because all of Deng Xi’s questions were very common-sense questions.
A four-legged animal the size of a palm, that liked to eat orange-red fruits, was covered in white fluff, could jump, and had long ears was called a rabbit.
Deng Xi remembered.
And an animal with two wings, covered in feathers, that could fly up with a flap of its wings and circle in the sky was a bird.
Deng Xi also remembered.
And a soft, large orange cat, a Samoyed that would circle around the pool, a deer with antlers on its head…
They were all very friendly, and would raise their paws to give Deng Xi a high-five, and let out a low cry as a greeting.
But Deng Xi looked and looked, but his little mute was not there.
He asked Aier in a bit of a panic, “Are these all of them?”
Because she was afraid that Deng Xi would be scared, some of the larger animals had not been brought over yet. Aier said with difficulty, “Do you have to see them?”
Deng Xi nodded vigorously.
Aier asked, “How long can your tail be out of water?”
Deng Xi shook his head. “But I can hold on!”
His sparkling blue eyes looked at Aier without blinking. Aier’s heart softened. “Alright, bring a wheelchair over.”
Deng Xi was helped onto this novel thing, which could help him walk on the ground. It was just a bit small, and he had to hold his big tail himself, otherwise it would fall to the ground.
Aier instructed, “The aliens who were just brought back were injected with hormones, so they can’t return to their human form, and they’re not very conscious. Be careful.”
After they had all stabilized with the help of the research institute and could transform into humans and regain their reason, they could be taken home by their guardians with a special monitoring lock ring.
For the convenience of monitoring, the rooms where the aliens lived were transparent on one side. Deng Xi’s wheelchair was pushed along, and he could see inside very clearly.
At a glance, he saw various different animals frantically scratching at the walls, desperately trying to crash through the transparent, soundproof walls to escape.
They were howling at the sky and tearing at the raw meat that had been fed to them. They opened their bloody maws, and their beastly, slitted pupils slowly looked at Deng Xi, who was being pushed over in the corridor.
Deng Xi, who was locked on by dozens of pairs of eyes, instantly stiffened. He shrank back in fear, hugging his big tail tightly.
Very suddenly.
The restless atmosphere suddenly calmed down.
The lion somewhat reservedly retracted its claws that had been scratching the wall and ground them on the ground. The cheetah spat out the raw meat it had been tearing at and closed its gaping mouth. The great white sharks, which Deng Xi recognized, also swam to the transparent wall and gently nudged it with their heads.
The frenzied aliens all quieted down the moment Deng Xi arrived.
The merman’s innate affinity had invisibly calmed them down, and every animal subconsciously wanted to get close to the little merman who was timidly looking at them.
Deng Xi blinked blankly.
Aier’s pupils constricted. She instantly realized that something was wrong and tightened her grip on the wheelchair’s handles.
The wheelchair stopped in the middle of the corridor.
Deng Xi: “What’s wrong?”
Aier forced a smile. “It’s nothing, let’s continue.”
She almost hurriedly took Deng Xi on a tour of the aliens’ living quarters, not even noticing what Deng Xi was looking for. After returning to the pool, she was a little disappointed and left in a hurry without saying a word.
Aier went straight to the top floor of the research institute, stepped into the director’s office, her breathing ragged, and said with ecstatic joy, “Director! You were right.”
The elderly man in the white coat stopped his research on the reagents and turned to look at Aier. His old eyes expressed his question.
Aier spoke quickly, “The Jiaoren that the Marshal saved is special. I suspect that his racial talent is—” she swallowed, and said dryly, “to be able to calm down all the frenzied aliens.”
The director’s hands paused, and his breathing became slightly rapid. “Impossible.”
Aier, without another word, opened her comm and, using her authority, pulled up the surveillance footage from just now and played it once.
The director’s eyes were filled with suspicion and uncertainty. He muttered to himself, “Impossible.” He had been studying for so many years, and there had never been an alien who could completely abandon the violent factors in their mental sea. Even the Marshal had been tormented for many years.
If this Jiaoren could, then it could only mean—a bold guess flashed through the director’s mind. He was not an alien.
Not an alien, and not a Jiaoren.
Then what was he?
Seeing that the director’s old habit was acting up again, and he had completely ignored the outside world after falling into deep thought, Aier could only leave first.
A long time passed.
The director let out a long sigh and made a communication. After it was connected, he let out another long sigh. “Marshal, I may have to break my promise.”
Si Jisheng’s projection appeared in the research institute’s office. At a glance, he saw a surveillance video on the comm that Aier had left. On the blue screen was a familiar figure.
He was sitting pitifully in a small wheelchair. His long tail couldn’t fit, so he could only hold it awkwardly in his arms. Because he was a little scared, most of his face was hidden behind his tail, only his beautiful blue eyes peeking out, looking left and right.
He was seriously looking for something.
Si Jisheng’s gaze was fixed for a long time before he slightly came back to his senses. After looking away, his eyes instantly became cold. “I’m sorry, could you please repeat that?” His voice was filled with a threat.
The research institute was backed by the Council of Elders. Because of what had happened three years ago, it had already collapsed for the most part. It was already a few notches lower than the military, and now it was even more ashamed for breaking its promise.
The director said, “Marshal, I would like to extract the genes of your kinsman to do an experiment.”
Si Jisheng was silent for a moment, then said with a cold sneer, “Isn’t the information he left behind in the research institute’s past gene bank complete enough?”
The director was slightly confused. “What do you mean?”
Si Jisheng reminded him in a cold voice, “The Jiaoren you hid three years ago.”
The director was even more confused. “That failed experiment, haven’t we lost all news of it for many years?”
“The research institute has absolutely no false statements about this, Your Excellency. I swear on my life, I did not steal your genes back then and participate in that experiment. Those researchers are all in prison. The research institute has not retained any of the experimental data from back then.”
“As far as I know, that experiment has been missing for many years.”
The director pulled out the data that had been sealed for many years. If it weren’t for this research opportunity, these things were meant to be buried with him.
But if it was really as he had predicted, then he might be able to hold a new, glorious milestone in the last part of his life.
This was a new species.
A unique racial talent.
To put an end to what had happened back then and not involve people he didn’t want to involve, Si Jisheng had always let the military let go and had not investigated further.
He swept his gaze over the experimental records that the director was showing him. The year of the records had come to an abrupt end many years ago.
Si Jisheng’s breathing hitched slightly.
The director’s face was solemn. He said in a deep voice, “I request that Your Excellency can give me a research opportunity. I suspect that we may have discovered a new species.”
He pulled out a large number of records of aliens going berserk and the racial talents of various atavistic alien creatures that the research institute had discovered over the years.
“Among these tens of millions of people, not a single alien can be spared from the torment of going berserk, including you,” the director said. “But he can.”
“It’s very likely that he is not an alien.”
“And not your kinsman.”
Not a Jiaoren.
I wonder who and where is the lost Jiaoren.
