Chapter 30: Merman
Besides the bond, there was also affection.
His heart suddenly began to ache, contracting and expanding. The bloody hole in his arm instantly made its presence known. The pain was like a thorny vine, drilling into the empty chambers of his heart, growing and spreading, then piercing out of his throat, covering his mouth and nose with the stench of blood and flesh.
Even breathing was painful.
Seeing that the silver-tail had not spoken for a long time, Deng Xi asked worriedly, “Is the wound very painful? Did the humans hurt Little Mute?”
“I don’t like humans anymore.”
“They’re so annoying.”
“Little Mute, let’s go back to the ocean together, okay?”
Let’s leave this dangerous world together.
The human world was full of unknowns. There were too many things here that Deng Xi didn’t recognize. He had never encountered so many intelligent creatures.
But because they were not of the same kind.
Even if they could talk and exuded a friendly aura, when he was in the same space with them, Deng Xi still felt that he didn’t belong.
He was deeply aware that he and humans were different. They were people from two different worlds. He couldn’t tell which humans were good and which were bad.
Whether they would hurt him, or hurt the little mute again, there were too many uncertain factors.
The ocean was still the safest.
The ocean that had been protecting him ever since he had hatched from his merman egg would never hurt him.
Deng Xi let go of the silver-tail and looked at the little mute seriously. “When we go back to the ocean, no one will hurt us.”
His own figure was reflected in the blue eyes that were even clearer than the ocean, full of expectation and concern, and only him.
The thorny vine blocked his throat, and the sharp thorns scraped against his vocal cords, making it difficult to answer.
Si Jisheng suddenly found that he had lost the ability to refuse.
He closed his eyes. “I can’t leave.”
The unreal joy came to an unprecedented halt, as if he had been thrown to a high point and then suddenly fell. Deng Xi blinked his blue eyes, and the expectation in them slowly turned to panic. “Is it because the humans won’t let you go?”
The little mute had changed a lot.
When he wasn’t looking, he had learned to speak, and his wounds had healed, but he had new injuries on his body.
Compared to when he was catching fish with him in the ocean,
he seemed to have become unhappy.
Deng Xi was suddenly very sad.
Because he didn’t know how much harm the little mute, whom he had wanted to protect all these years, had suffered at the hands of humans.
“They’re too bad.”
Deng Xi rubbed his eyes. “Then shall we sneak away?”
Even speaking seemed to have become difficult.
What Deng Xi wanted was very simple.
But this was something Si Jisheng couldn’t give.
The restored language system seemed to be on the verge of collapse again. Every word Si Jisheng uttered was accompanied by a difficult pause. “I can… send you back to the ocean.”
Deng Xi was stunned for a moment, then blinked blankly. “What about Little Mute?”
Silence.
Not answering was already an answer.
Deng Xi was stunned in place. The joy of their reunion seemed to have disappeared in an instant. He didn’t understand why, but he still stubbornly asked, “Isn’t Little Mute coming with me?”
“Am I going back by myself?”
But, if he went back by himself, then what was the meaning of his long search?
Deng Xi looked up at the silver-tail, blinked his eyes very, very lightly, parted his lips, and asked again.
“Why can’t Little Mute come back with me?”
“Don’t stay for me, it’s not worth it.”
He was not answering the question.
But Deng Xi just wanted an answer. “Is it that you don’t want to, or you can’t?”
Si Jisheng hardly hesitated. “I can’t.”
His blue eyes curved again. Deng Xi looked at the wound on the silver-tail’s hand. “I understand.”
He believed that the little mute was in trouble now.
Deng Xi could easily become happy, no matter how great the difficulty. “It’s okay, we can face it together. I can stay and help Little Mute solve it, until we can go back to the ocean together.”
“Okay?”
His heart began to ache again. Si Jisheng took a deep, heavy breath. “What if… we never can?”
What if it was all a lie, he was not his only kinsman, and there was no possibility of going to the ocean to accompany the lonely Deng Xi forever in the future.
Deng Xi thought of the blue whale and the jellyfish that were still waiting for him to return in the ocean, and the two large shells in his lair that he missed very much, and the ocean on that planet that was always there, whether he left or came back.
The ocean that belonged to him.
Making a choice was always difficult.
Deng Xi thought for a moment. “Will the humans hurt us?”
Si Jisheng shook his head. “No, never.”
“Mmm…” Deng Xi counted on his fingers. “Then will there be an endless supply of fish?”
Si Jisheng nodded. “Yes, and there will also be food that is even more delicious than fish.”
Deng Xi’s eyes lit up. “Then will we have a large shell that we can sleep in?”
Si Jisheng continued to nod. “Yes.”
Deng Xi flicked his tail fin and swam a circle in place, opening his arms. “Then will there be an ocean that belongs to us?”
Si Jisheng also agreed, “Yes.”
He could buy a seaside manor on the capital star.
Deng Xi swam back and moved closer to the silver-tail. “Then can Big Whale and the little jellyfish be brought over too?”
Si Jisheng hesitated for a moment, thought about the capacity of the military’s largest starship, and nodded. “Yes.”
“Really? Really?” Deng Xi widened his eyes in disbelief. The next moment, he curved his eyelids again. “Little Mute can’t lie to me.”
“It’s okay if we don’t have any of these.”
He thought that the little mute was still a weak silver-tail who had been captured by humans and couldn’t go anywhere.
A small dimple appeared at the corner of Deng Xi’s lips. He smiled. “I won’t abandon Little Mute.”
“Never.”
Even Si Jisheng’s breathing was heavy with pain. He couldn’t suppress it. His chest heaved heavily once, and with a single movement, he was suddenly overcome by the effects of the drug and leaned back against the coral reef behind him, exhausted.
Deng Xi was startled. He quickly grabbed the silver-tail’s hand and frantically led the little mute upwards. “Is the wound too painful, or do you have no strength? There’s food up there. You should be fine after eating something.”
Si Jisheng pressed his thin lips together and swallowed the rest of his words. He also used his remaining strength to cooperate with Deng Xi’s movements. Deng Xi was able to lead the silver-tail with relative ease and swam to the side of the pool.
When they reached the side of the pool, Si Jisheng saw at a glance the monotonous salmon, of which a large half was still left on the plate. The knife and fork had been pushed far away.
Only salmon.
He frowned.
The salmon was a whole piece. In the past, Deng Xi would have picked it up and gnawed on it. But now, the little mute was here.
Deng Xi picked up the sharp little knife and clumsily held it against the salmon, wanting to cut the fish into thin slices like he had done in the ocean before, to be a refined and elegant little merman.
When he cut down hard, he remembered that he had forgotten to take the fork. He belatedly pulled out the little knife and reached for the fork that had been pushed far away. In the process, the little knife swayed in his hand.
It looked very dangerous.
His brow furrowed even tighter. Si Jisheng glanced at the empty room, his face growing even uglier. His expression darkened, and he reached out and gently pulled the little knife out of Deng Xi’s hand.
Deng Xi was stunned for a moment. “What’s wrong?”
Si Jisheng skillfully held the little knife in his hand. With a wave of his long arm, he also took the fork and silently demonstrated the correct way to do it for Deng Xi.
Deng Xi pursed his lips and revealed a dimple. “Little Mute knows so much, you’ve become so amazing.” He was suddenly a little curious. “Why can Little Mute speak again?”
“Treatment.”
Three years of psychotherapy plus medication.
And a broken, small, blue-green conch shell that could no longer produce the sound of the waves. That was what Si Jisheng had found after he had woken up, that he had somehow found the lost conch shell.
Although it was in pieces.
Deng Xi didn’t mind this somewhat cold reply. He was genuinely happy for the little mute who could speak. “Then do the humans often hurt you?”
Si Jisheng hesitated for a moment, then finally shook his head.
Deng Xi took the small fork with the piece of salmon that the silver-tail had handed him and put it in his mouth. Because he was chewing on the fish, his speech was a bit slurred. “Then what about the wound on Little Mute’s hand?”
Deng Xi swallowed the salmon, shook his head, and refused the next piece, pushing them all to the little mute. “Little Mute can’t lie to me, you have to tell the truth!”
Si Jisheng was silent for a moment. “It was for something I had to confirm. I pulled the scale off myself.”
Deng Xi’s little face scrunched up in pain. “You can’t do that next time.”
Si Jisheng did not nod, nor did he make a sound. He just silently pushed a piece of salmon to Deng Xi.
He was not hungry.
The effects of the tranquilizer needed time to metabolize. Simply eating would speed it up, but the effect was not great.
This piece of salmon was finished after being pushed back and forth.
Because he saw that the silver-tail was not in good spirits, Deng Xi did not ask any more questions. He suppressed his curiosity. Knowing that the little mute was doing well, he was relieved.
Deng Xi led the silver-tail to the large shell in the corner and pushed the little mute in. “Little Mute needs to rest.”
Si Jisheng, with Deng Xi’s help, slowly fell into it with his heavy body.
He still had one night.
Si Jisheng symbolically closed his eyes.
Deng Xi breathed a sigh of relief and lay by the side of the shell, quietly watching the sleeping silver-tail. He was very uneasy and rarely blinked, afraid that all of this was just an unreal dream.
The little mute had appeared too suddenly.
Deng Xi was afraid that he would also suddenly disappear.
But time slowly passed, and sleepiness still pulled Deng Xi into a slumber. Feeling the peaceful breathing beside him, the silver-tail opened his eyes.
Si Jisheng quietly looked at Deng Xi.
He looked for a long, long time, until late at night, when the vibrating comm on his knuckle woke his sore eyes.
Si Jisheng opened his comm. The dim blue screen showed a message from the director of the research institute. The other party’s emotions were very agitated. “The two scales that Your Excellency sent over have been genetically compared. The results are out. Your Excellency and he are indeed not of the same species.”
“Marshal, do you know what other racial talents he has? This will be helpful for us to consult a large amount of data.”
Si Jisheng replied, “Song.”
Because of these two simple words, the entire research institute was busy all night, almost going through the gene banks of every research institute on the Imperial Capital Star, until they found a relatively matching species in an ancient document.
This was a work left behind by a bard.
In the ancient legends of the West, there was such a race that was favored by the sea. They were born as the epitome of beauty. They had an unparalleled affinity for all things in the world, and their songs could heal everything.
This was a species that had disappeared for a long time.
The merman species.
A species that had not been seen in the galaxy for thousands of years. Until today, the Empire had discovered the last merman in the entire galaxy, the only one!
When Deng Xi woke up again, he was curled up in the shell. And the silver-tail who should have been in the shell was like a bubble he had dreamed up, suddenly appearing, and then suddenly popping with a “pop,” cruelly bursting.
Deng Xi frantically opened the shell. When he looked around, he was stunned. Outside the transparent glass room, there were suddenly many figures walking back and forth.
He didn’t know if it was his imagination, but he always felt that when these people passed by, they would occasionally look at him with a cherished expression.
These were not important.
What was important was his little mute.
Where had his little mute gone?
Deng Xi swam out of the shell, so anxious he was about to cry. He regretted why he had fallen asleep last night. He had clearly decided that he would not let the little mute disappear from his sight again.
This was the second time, and he still couldn’t do it.
He still couldn’t hear anything.
Deng Xi swam all over the pool but found nothing. The little merman in the pool lowered his eyelids dejectedly. Just as he was about to continue swimming into the passage and search the underwater world again, the sound of human footsteps came from behind.
Deng Xi turned around.
It was Aier.
Aier squatted by the side of the pool, calming her slightly agitated mood. “Good morning, Deng Xi.”
Deng Xi said in a muffled voice, “Good morning.” He suddenly remembered something, and his eyes lit up. “Aier, can I ask you a question? The new neighbor you found for me yesterday, where did he go?”
“He was gone when I woke up. Can you help me find him?”
Aier was confused. “New neighbor? What new neighbor?”
Deng Xi gestured with his hands. “The sea creature Aier said you were going to find for me yesterday. He’s about that tall, his tail is that long, and it’s silver!”
Aier frowned. “But the sea creature I arranged for you hasn’t moved in yet.”
Hasn’t moved in.
Then was the little mute he had seen yesterday a hallucination?
“Deng Xi?”
Deng Xi looked up with his frightened, trembling blue eyes.
Aier: “I also have a question.” She asked, “Does your song have any special power?”
Deng Xi nodded randomly. “Yesterday, yesterday he was definitely there. Aier, can you help me find him?”
Aier: “Perhaps an alien with an atavistic object that is a sea creature snuck in. Don’t worry, I’ll help you find him.”
“Before that, I have a request.”
“We have a patient here who might need your help. Can you meet him? Please.”
Although she didn’t know why the matter was so urgent, Aier still did as the director had instructed. It wasn’t until Deng Xi nodded as she had expected that she brought over a wheelchair and helped the blue-tail onto it.
This time, the wheelchair had clearly been improved a lot. A long tray had been added, so that Deng Xi didn’t have to hold his tail. He nervously gripped the armrests of the wheelchair. Because of his anxiety, his pink, moist fingertips were white from the force.
It wasn’t until Aier pushed him to a pure white door.
The moment the door opened, a solemn and indifferent back was revealed. He was wearing a pure black combat suit, a military greatcoat, and his shoulders were covered with golden medals. The two hands hanging by his sides were both wearing mechanical gloves that represented restraint. And below that was a pair of straight legs.
Deng Xi remembered him.
The person who had given him the shell.
It wasn’t until the person in front of him turned around, revealing a side profile that Deng Xi was all too familiar with.
His blue eyes widened slightly. Deng Xi gripped the armrests tightly. He suddenly began to tremble uncontrollably. No, no, how could his little mute have turned into a human?
Can a merman grow human legs?
