Chapter 30: I’m Here to Elope with Lingling.…
This was just a small station, with two-story temporary huts built from lightweight materials. The rooms were limited, and everyone lived in eight-person rooms. When “guests” came, it was four-person rooms.
Only distinguished guests like Shi Changyuan and Lin Ling, who were not part of the military, could get a two-person room.
“Is this the C24 area?”
Lin Ling looked at the two identical military-green single beds and curiously walked to the window to look out.
Outside the window, besides a row of low houses and tents, there were rolling hills in the back, surrounded by circles of iron fences, with “Danger, Restricted Area” signs hanging everywhere.
It was different from City B and the base.
The area around the base was all plains. Standing by the bed, you could see very, very far.
The weather was a bit cold, and a layer of frost had formed on the window. The little zombie shivered and went back to the still-warm bed, waiting for Shi Changyuan to come out of the bathroom.
“Lingling.”
When he heard Shi Changyuan’s voice again, the little zombie realized he had dozed off again.
“What took you so long…”
The little zombie grumbled and poked his head out of the quilt, only to be met with a blast of cold, moist air.
“Why are you taking a cold shower again?”
Lin Ling frowned in displeasure.
“The camp only provides hot water at designated times. There’s no hot water in the morning.”
“Is that so?” The little zombie was half-believing.
“Mm.”
“Then don’t shower in the morning anymore.”
“Alright.”
Shi Changyuan expertly coaxed the little cat while putting on his sweater, scarf, and hat.
“The military’s control is stricter. I’ve created a new identity for Lingling. You’re my personal bodyguard. A few high-level officials will know that Lingling ‘has an ability.’ Lingling, don’t let it slip.”
“You underestimate me. I’m the one protecting you in the first place.”
The little zombie snorted proudly.
When the two of them were ready and walked out of the room together, the little zombie once again felt the difference between the military and the research institute.
At this time, the research institute was still quiet. You wouldn’t see anyone until around eight or nine o’clock. But now, the military was already full of people.
Everyone was wearing the same clothes, running in neat lines around the small mountain with weights on their backs.
“You’re here.”
The moment Miao Xue saw Shi Changyuan and Lin Ling, she waved enthusiastically. “This is the cafeteria. Come and have breakfast.”
Cafeteria! Breakfast!
The little zombie’s eyes lit up. He pulled Shi Changyuan and rushed downstairs, heading straight for the small factory-like building on the first floor.
The cafeteria here was not like the one at the research institute, with various windows. After the cook finished cooking, he would bring out a large pot, and everyone would bring their bowls and eat whatever they wanted, as much as they wanted, like a buffet.
Lin Ling looked at each dish one by one.
Steamed buns, congee, eggs, and small pickles.
It was quite a spread, but none of it was suitable for a zombie to eat.
The dietary differences between humans and zombies were truly heartbreaking.
Lin Ling’s eyes drooped. The only thing he could eat, the boiled egg, was limited to one per person.
Shi Changyuan, who had guessed this would happen, couldn’t hide his amusement. He stuffed his own boiled egg into the little zombie’s hand.
“The food in the military is like this.”
“We’ll go to the back mountain later and see if we can hunt something.”
Hearing that they were going hunting, the little zombie’s spirits instantly lifted. He finished the tasteless boiled egg in a few bites and waited for Shi Changyuan to give him an extra meal.
“Hey, everyone’s here.”
A military officer walked into the cafeteria, his gaze sweeping across the crowd, and finally landing on Lin Ling.
“This must be Professor Duan’s grandnephew.”
The other person was clearly here for Lin Ling. He walked straight over, sat down opposite the little zombie, and asked in a low, curious voice, “I heard you’re also an ability user, and not a common elemental one. Can you show me?”
The little zombie was busy gnawing on his second egg and was already very dry. Hearing this so suddenly, he almost choked on the yolk.
“What, is it not convenient?”
The burly officer placed his hand on the dining table, palm open, in a familiar gesture.
“How about this? How about we arm-wrestle, little friend?”
Before he could finish, two more guys with military ranks came into the cafeteria. They seemed to be in on it and immediately gathered around.
The little zombie looked at the row of humans in front of him, then at Shi Changyuan.
He suddenly had the feeling of being back before the apocalypse, during the New Year, when he was surrounded by everyone and asked to perform.
Lin Ling blinked, and while chewing on his egg, he said indistinctly, “Arm-wrestling is not fair to me.”
The young man’s tone and expression were exceptionally sincere. He said, “I can’t use my full strength against you.”
The surrounding officers were stunned for a moment, then burst out laughing and pressed, “What does ‘can’t use my full strength’ mean, little friend?”
Shi Changyuan handed over a glass of water. The little zombie downed it in two gulps, then gently squeezed the old-fashioned enamel cup, as if it were a paper cup, and effortlessly crushed it.
He could even twist it into any shape he wanted.
The officers were silent for a moment, then became even more interested in Lin Ling. They kept asking if the little zombie had any plans to join the military, which scared Lin Ling into grabbing Shi Changyuan and running away.
“Those guys are all old friends of Old Duan’s. They just wanted to tease you.”
Shi Changyuan said with a smile from the side.
The little zombie: “.”
When will humans ever get over their bad habit of teasing children?
“Alright, let’s get down to business.”
Shi Changyuan comfortingly squeezed the back of the little zombie’s neck and took his hand. “Let’s try to stay here for as few days as possible.”
“Okay.”
In the following days, the little zombie’s daily routine was to follow behind Shi Changyuan, occasionally helping him pick up a few blades of grass or catch a few small insects to take back.
After work, he would carefully select a prey that would make a little zombie drool, and kill it with a single crossbow bolt to the throat.
“This is the good thing about raising a zombie. You don’t have to worry about whether the prey is mutated when you’re hunting.”
Shi Changyuan looked at the four-legged wild chicken in his hand, then at the little zombie who had contentedly devoured all four chicken legs.
“Hmph, you don’t understand.”
“This is called being at the top of the food chain.” The little zombie patted his stomach. “I’ve waited a long time for this day.”
“Now, there’s nothing in this world that I can’t eat!”
Shi Changyuan smiled, put out the bonfire, and carved the remaining chicken meat with a dagger, saving it for the little zombie’s dinner.
“Alright, let’s go back.”
After a few days of research, the military was eager for Shi Changyuan to find the reason for the infection of these plants and animals, but Shi Changyuan found that there was no reason.
This was a trend, the general trend of biological evolution.
“You’re saying there’s no way to control this situation?”
The military couldn’t quite accept this reason.
Shi Changyuan said that the mutation of these plants and animals was like the zombie outbreak. He could develop a suppressing serum to avoid and reduce new infections, but there was no way to turn those who had already become zombies back into humans.
Similarly, if humans were infected by plants and animals, they could also be injected with the serum, but controlling plants and animals from mutating further was almost impossible.
“But there’s also some good news.”
Shi Changyuan looked at the grim-faced military officers in front of him, his tone light, as if this matter had nothing to do with him.
“The infectious ability of mutant plants and animals is very weak. With the constitution of an ability user, they basically won’t be infected by the viruses of plants and animals.”
“You might have to officially notify the public about this.”
“If you don’t believe me, you can wait for Old Duan’s conclusion.”
After Shi Changyuan finished his report, he considered his mission complete, but for some reason, the military didn’t want to let him go.
“This matter is of great importance. We need to have a meeting to discuss it.”
“That’s right. Our equipment here is simple. I’m afraid the data is not very accurate.”
“Another meeting to discuss?”
Shi Changyuan’s expression instantly turned cold. “Then what are we sitting here for?”
“Don’t be anxious. We’ll report it to the higher-ups first. When they send someone, we’ll see Old Duan’s definite conclusion, and then we’ll…”
**
The atmosphere in the conference room was not good, and the smell of gunpowder was gradually getting stronger.
The little zombie sat in the lounge, gnawing on beef jerky, secretly having an extra snack, and could faintly hear the argument in the conference room next door.
“Who are they waiting for?”
The little zombie looked at Miao Xue, who was with him, and asked in a low voice.
“I don’t know. It’s said that after the base received Professor Shi’s conclusion, they sent someone with higher authority to handle this matter.”
Miao Xue had not been idle recently and had found out a lot of things. “But it’s 100% from the military. My woman’s intuition tells me it might be a general.”
“A general?”
A very familiar rank. The little zombie chewed on his beef jerky and asked, “Who?”
“General Song Jing! He’s always been handling various front-line matters. I estimate that he’ll be handling this one too.”
“But this is all my guess. General Song’s itinerary is confidential. We’re just guessing.”
Hearing the name “Song Jing,” Lin Ling froze.
He remembered that people at the base had said that Song Jing was on a field mission. He wouldn’t run into him here, would he?!!
The little zombie’s heart was pounding. He turned and wanted to find Shi Changyuan.
He stood in front of the conference room door. It seemed that the meeting hadn’t ended yet, and from what he had just heard, the military wanted Shi Changyuan to stay and meet with the general to discuss this matter together.
“We know that Professor Shi has a private itinerary later, but this is for the future of humanity. We hope Professor Shi can understand. We will provide Professor Shi with the best conditions…”
Lin Ling stood at the door and heard the humans inside say this to Shi Changyuan.
Shi Changyuan is a human. Shi Changyuan might not leave.
The little zombie lowered his gaze and came to this conclusion.
But he couldn’t meet Song Jing yet.
Then he would have to leave for a while and come back to find Shi Changyuan after Song Jing had left.
And he didn’t know when Song Jing would come. To be safe, he had better leave right now.
Before the meeting ended, the little zombie returned to his room and began to pack his things.
He took out the fluffy blanket and put all the nutritional supplements and beef jerky that Shi Changyuan had prepared for him into his backpack.
Because he didn’t know when Shi Changyuan would be back, the little zombie also left him a note, telling him not to worry, that he was just going out to lie low for a while.
After packing his things, the little zombie circled the station but couldn’t find a second small door to leave. He had to go back to the front yard and squat in a small corner by the wall, looking for an opportunity.
But the main gate was guarded by a sentry. By the time it got dark and his legs were numb from squatting, the little zombie still hadn’t found a chance to leave the station.
“Found you, Lingling.”
A familiar voice suddenly came from behind him.
The little zombie abruptly turned and stood up, but his numb legs made his vision go black, and he fell straight towards Shi Changyuan.
“Careful.”
Shi Changyuan’s palm pressed against his waist, steadying Lin Ling.
The little zombie looked up at Shi Changyuan, wanting to ask him how he knew he was here, but when he met his eyes, he knew he didn’t need to ask.
“You don’t want me to go.”
He muttered in a low voice, his tone certain. “Are you going to take me back?”
Although he had only run out of the dormitory building and hadn’t even been able to get out the main gate, it still counted as running away, right?
“No.”
Shi Changyuan’s eyes curved.
“I’m here to elope with Lingling.”
The little zombie suddenly felt his heart skip a beat, and then it began to beat violently, so loudly that he could barely hear anything else.
He looked at the human in front of him, a bit dazed.
“What did you say?”
“I said, I’m here to elope with Lingling.”
Shi Changyuan pinched the little zombie’s cheek, as if in retaliation.
“Lingling left me behind.”
