Chapter 15
Yu Congyan realized that this matter was beyond the scope of his minor in psychology.
Just a few days ago, he had sensed signs of improvement in Xia Wansheng, but now this happened.
He had no choice but to bother his doctor friend.
A moment later, Fu Yan, fresh off his shift at the clinic and walking his four Shiba Inus, punched the villa’s doorbell with considerable force.
“You call me to be your errand boy the moment I return to the country? Can’t the Yu family afford a family doctor?!” Fu Yan said impatiently.
For heaven’s sake, he had finally returned from studying abroad in Germany, ready to inherit his family’s vast fortune and enjoy a life of leisure—
But Yu Congyan was good at ordering people around. A single phone call to his elder brother, and here he was, practically owing him a favor.
“I was enjoying my life, you better have a damn good reason for calling me, or we’re no longer friends!”
The Shiba Inus in Fu Yan’s arms also bared their teeth in protest.
“The situation is rather complicated, others aren’t qualified.”
Since they were long-time friends, Yu Congyan didn’t mince words, directly emphasizing the severity of the matter.
“Xia Wansheng’s condition fluctuates, and the changes are unpredictable.” Yu Congyan said.
Now it was Fu Yan’s turn to frown.
“I’ll need to observe him personally to make a judgment, but I can say with certainty that these unusual behaviors are definitely not some petty trick to get your attention.” Fu Yan clicked his tongue.
After all, a canary wouldn’t risk their life just to please their keeper.
He had thought Yu Congyan was overreacting before coming here, but now it seemed the matter did fall within his area of expertise.
“Take me to his room, I might find some clues.” Fu Yan said after some thought.
Xia Wansheng, having disposed of the previous white moonlight’s discarded manuscripts, returned to his bedroom feeling relieved.
He was now adept at playing the role of the neglected canary, calmly turning his head away from the housekeeper and servants’ concerned gazes, inadvertently revealing a look of dejection.
In reality, he was daydreaming about what to eat for dinner.
As he approached his bedroom, he saw Housekeeper Zhang standing guard, stopping him: “Mr. Xia, dinner is ready, why don’t you dine first?”
The old housekeeper looked like he was facing a formidable enemy, his body firmly blocking the bedroom door, like he was protecting some unspeakable secret.
“???”
Xia Wansheng wondered which part of the plot this was. Should he play along?
Had the moment of truth arrived so soon? Was this the tragic ending where the enraged Yu Aotian ordered his men to drown him in the river?!
Could he still struggle?
Fu Yan was still leisurely searching for clues in Xia Wansheng’s bedroom, while Yu Congyan leaned against the doorframe with his arms crossed, reminding him:
“Xia Wansheng is right outside, have you figured out how to explain this?”
Fu Yan didn’t even look up: “I’m a doctor, it’s my duty to treat patients, besides, you forced me in here, what does it have to do with me?”
Yu Congyan thought, he’s good at shifting blame.
“But this trip wasn’t entirely fruitless, look what I found.” Fu Yan picked up a dusty gray notebook from the corner of the bedroom.
Although Yu Congyan had never seen this notebook before, the handwriting was indeed Xia Wansheng’s, and judging by the date, it was from a while ago.
“Although reading someone’s diary without their consent is unethical, it’s often the best way to understand a patient’s condition without them knowing.” Fu Yan put on gloves and opened the slightly yellowed diary.
Large patches of blurred ink came into view, the contents illegible.
“Are you sure this is a clue?” Yu Congyan asked, unimpressed.
“The diary being in this state suggests this is the key to his changing mental state.” Fu Yan didn’t bother explaining to a layman.
After all, no one would understand the profound psychological knowledge involved, encompassing astronomy, geography, and history, knowledge only attainable after eight years of study in Germany.
Fu Yan flipped through the pages one by one. The dates on each entry were all blurred.
But he could vaguely sense the writer’s frantic emotions through the indentations on the paper.
Fu Yan had been confident, thinking it was simply impulsiveness and anger, but as he continued reading, his expression changed.
Why was there such a drastic difference in his mental state throughout the diary?
The first part was full of inkblots, occasionally interspersed with hatred towards unnamed people and things, revealing only restlessness and desire.
But the newer entries at the back were brief and indifferent, as if summarizing major events of half a year in just a few sentences.
Very concise and to the point.
“When you told me about Xia Wansheng’s unusual mental state, I thought you were just playing some kind of game, but now it seems…” Fu Yan’s tone was unusually serious.
“This person might be quite extraordinary. What we’re seeing might be a destructive alter ego, hating the original personality’s actions, disgusted by their past self, that’s why this new personality has no will to live…”
Yu Congyan’s heart skipped a beat.
“Because the original personality will eventually return, the current one wants to end it all.” Fu Yan tried to explain it in simple terms.
“…” Yu Congyan was momentarily convinced.
But then he thought it was too much of a coincidence. How could there be such a stable dual personality, with no issues normally, and a sudden switch just when he discovered the flaws?
“Most psychological problems stem from neglect by family members, this saying is truly accurate.” Fu Yan shook his head.
He suddenly thought of himself and sighed. Sometimes, not being understood was the fate of a genius.
Meanwhile, Xia Wansheng outside the door was trying to recall which part of the plot this was.
The system, silent for a long time, suddenly came online, its voice sharp: “Alert! Important clue discovered by the protagonist, high risk of exposure, please intervene immediately!”
Its tone was unprecedentedly urgent, as if it wanted to crash through the door and prevent further developments.
Xia Wansheng: ??!!
Which part of the original plot was this?
But the system was already screaming in his mind, like a culprit who had caused a huge mess and was desperately trying to fix it.
But the housekeeper’s gaze remained firm and unwavering, showing no intention of letting him back into the room.
“I apologize, Mr. Xia, your room has just been disinfected this morning, it’s not suitable to enter at the moment.” The housekeeper politely explained that it wasn’t convenient now.
In reality, he was breaking out in a cold sweat.
He didn’t want to offend any of these people!
But if he told the truth in this situation, who knew what would happen.
“Mr. Xia, why don’t you rest in the living room…Are you alright? Are you feeling unwell?!”
Xia Wansheng put on his exceptional acting skills, clutching his chest and feigning dizziness and shortness of breath, as if about to collapse at the door. But as the housekeeper leaned over to support him, he swiftly turned the doorknob.
The door opened abruptly.
Due to inertia, Xia Wansheng almost fell forward onto the floor.
Just before his nose made intimate contact with the floor, Yu Congyan, leaning against the doorframe, reacted quickly and grabbed his collar, pulling him up.
“!!!” Xia Wansheng’s eyes widened.
Would Yu Congyan calmly order the housekeeper to dispose of him next?!
Or had his true identity been discovered?!
He couldn’t tell which scenario would be worse.
“What are you doing in my room?” Xia Wansheng asked, seeing Fu Yan sitting on the floor.
He recognized this person from the book. The CEO’s doctor friend, a highly educated returnee from studying abroad, wealthy but preferring a peaceful life. He had appeared in several of the author’s CEO novels.
A truly dedicated worker.
Xia Wansheng suddenly wanted to shake hands with this senior, to discuss how to maintain composure and avoid laughing in such an awkward situation.
“The reason is quite complicated, but in short, we need to talk about this diary.” Fu Yan opened the diary and handed it to Xia Wansheng.
“Did you write these entries?”
Fu Yan stared at Xia Wansheng’s eyes like a hawk, confident in his judgment.
A person’s personality and hobbies wouldn’t change drastically overnight. The only explanation was that a different personality was now inhabiting this body.
“You’re not the original Xia Wansheng, are you?”
The system screamed in his mind: “Host, we’re doomed! Your five million and my year-end bonus are gone!”
In the original plot, this diary was a crucial point in the deterioration of their relationship. It was here that Yu Congyan learned Xia Wansheng had planned to use the Yu family’s influence to revive his career from the very beginning.
So, although the system knew about this time bomb, it didn’t have the authority to change it.
Now everything was ruined.
Right before its probationary period ended, the time bomb exploded.
The system despaired.
How could it make such a huge mistake?
Now everything depended on the host’s ability to improvise.
“You figured it out?” Xia Wansheng said calmly.
“!!!” The system was shocked.
Why was he giving up now? He should at least try to salvage the situation!
Before the system could recover, Xia Wansheng calmly stepped forward and picked up the diary from the floor.
“I had a good role offer before, and the diary was for practicing and getting into character. I tried to simulate the character’s psychology, and it seems I did a good job.” Xia Wansheng said naturally.
Since the diary was written for acting, the mental state depicted had nothing to do with him now.
Hopefully, this excuse would work.
“You’ve never played this type of role before.” Yu Congyan said coldly.
He hadn’t investigated all that information for nothing. He quickly searched his mind but couldn’t find a match. His gaze turned cold.
Xia Wansheng was lying again.
“Something happened later, and the project was canceled.” Xia Wansheng didn’t seem to want to elaborate.
“What could make you give up a role you prepared for so long? This is all your hard work.” Fu Yan pressed on.
Xia Wansheng glanced at Yu Congyan, and seeing he didn’t object, sighed, closed the diary, and said hesitantly: “The director wanted to exploit me, I beat him up, and it was only natural that I was blacklisted.”
Although it was the original owner who had offended people with his arrogance, that director had also done many bad things and was now in jail. Yu Congyan couldn’t exactly go to prison to confront him, could he?
This explanation was perfect.
It’s just that the two people across from him suddenly felt a pang of guilt.
Oh no, not the year-end bonus!
