Chapter 29 Part 1
Shi Xu noticed Gu Sui’s subtle movements. He could have easily pulled away, but he froze, watching as Gu Sui leaned closer.
Gu Sui guided his finger into his warm, wet mouth.
Shi Xu had once had the absurd thought of wanting to know what a pollutant’s insides felt like.
Now he knew. Just like its manufactured exterior, the inside of a pollutant’s mouth was no different from a human’s.
But at the same time, Shi Xu experienced a completely novel sensation.
He had never been intimate with anyone, not even his closest friend, Qi Yu, their physical contact limited to hugs.
Touching the inside of his own mouth and having someone else’s mouth on him were entirely different experiences.
A tingling sensation spread from his fingertip throughout his body, a physical and emotional shock that almost overwhelmed him.
The pollutant, oblivious to Shi Xu’s reaction, sucked on his finger as if savoring a delicacy.
Its soft tongue enveloped his finger, trapping Shi Xu’s taste within its mouth. Gu Sui stared at him, his eyes conveying his excitement.
[Finally tasting Wife again! Wife is so sweet! I love it~]
His hot, heavy breath washed over Shi Xu’s hand, making it tremble.
He had faced countless pollutants and Variants without flinching, but now, simply having his finger in Gu Sui’s mouth was draining his strength, the feeling intensifying with each suck.
“Enough…” Before the strange sensation overwhelmed him completely, Shi Xu ordered coldly, trying to pull his finger away.
He realized his finger was limp, trapped by Gu Sui’s tight grip. Only after his sharp command did Gu Sui reluctantly release him.
His finger finally free, Gu Sui’s eyes darkened, like a hungry wolf, his tongue lapping up the glistening saliva from Shi Xu’s fingertip, the brief contact sending another shiver down Shi Xu’s spine.
Shi Xu stared at the unsatisfied creature before him, stunned by the strange, unfamiliar sensation.
Gu Sui lowered his head, his gaze level with Shi Xu’s, his dark hair falling around his face, his eyelids drooping, his long lashes casting shadows on his golden eyes, giving him a pitiful appearance.
He didn’t say anything, but Shi Xu understood: [I haven’t had enough. I want more of Wife’s finger.]
Shi Xu disliked being touched without permission. The pollutant’s saliva on his finger was a violation of his boundaries, yet, strangely, he felt no anger.
“Wife, why… aren’t you… talking? Are… you… angry?” Gu Sui looked up at him, his voice cautious. “Did… I… upset you?”
So it did know it was overstepping.
But even knowing that, it would do it again.
Shi Xu lifted his other hand, cupping Gu Sui’s chin. “Did I promise you that kind of reward?”
Gu Sui answered honestly, “No.”
Shi Xu: “You knew I’d be angry. Why did you do it?”
Gu Sui’s eyes darted around, stammering, “I… I…”
Shi Xu: “Tell me the truth.”
Gu Sui’s voice suddenly became clear. “Wife… tastes… so good. I… couldn’t… resist!”
Shi Xu chuckled. Gu Sui, lulled by his gentle smile, lowered his guard. Just as he thought Shi Xu wasn’t angry, the grip on his chin tightened.
Shi Xu’s smile didn’t reach his eyes, his voice cold. “Resist it. If this happens again, get out of my house.”
Gu Sui: “…”
Wife is really angry!
It was still early after returning home. Shi Xu took a nap, then went to the Anomaly Management Bureau in the afternoon.
Seeing him, many assumed he had returned to work, greeting him enthusiastically.
The Lin Zhi incident was still fresh in their minds, yet they seemed to have forgotten their earlier suspicion and distrust, acting as if nothing had happened.
Shi Xu didn’t care about their attitudes. He knew they would betray him again if given the chance.
He never intended to form close relationships with them. His only friend in the bureau was Qi Yu.
He went directly to Director Shen’s office, submitting his resignation.
“Have you really thought this through?” Director Shen wasn’t surprised.
Shi Xu’s hesitation earlier had hinted at this, so the resignation letter wasn’t unexpected.
Shi Xu: “Yes, I have.”
Director Shen: “What are your plans?”
Shi Xu: “Find a suitable job.”
Director Shen chuckled. “There are many suitable jobs for you.”
Shi Xu smiled. “I haven’t decided yet.”
Director Shen: “Then why resign? Isn’t it good working here?”
“No, thank you.” Shi Xu didn’t hesitate. He thought for a moment. “It’s too tiring.”
Director Shen wasn’t angry, just sighed. “We have many talented espers, but few truly capable individuals. Honestly, I’m reluctant to let you go.”
He looked at Shi Xu with a grandfatherly affection and a hint of hope.
At this moment, they weren’t superior and subordinate, but more like family.
Director Shen was strict professionally, but approachable otherwise.
Shi Xu had received his support many times. He knew Director Shen valued him, and he didn’t blame him for the pressure during the Lin Zhi incident. He understood Director Shen’s difficulties.
But he couldn’t sacrifice his own well-being out of gratitude.
He wouldn’t force himself anymore.
Shi Xu said helplessly, “Please, let me go.”
Director Shen’s facade of disappointment crumbled. “Fine, go then! Don’t come back!”
Shi Xu chuckled. “Playing the guilt card didn’t work, so now you’re resorting to tough love?”
Director Shen: “Is it working?”
“Sorry.” Shi Xu shattered his last hope. “It’s not.”
Director Shen glared at him, then changed the subject. “Your father called me before you arrived.”
Shi Xu: “He wanted you to convince me to stay?”
“Yes!” Director Shen said smugly. “First time he’s ever asked me for a favor.”
Considering their strained relationship, this was a significant gesture, indicating how much Shi Yan valued the “captain” title, more than his own son.
Shi Xu: “Then why did you let me go?”
Director Shen chuckled. “Your departure will hurt him more than anything. I enjoy seeing him suffer.”
He was badmouthing Shi Xu’s father right in front of him, and Shi Xu didn’t react.
Director Shen knew their relationship was strained, which allowed him such liberties.
“Someone will replace you, but if you can’t find a job, you can always come back. The captain’s position will always be open for you.” He offered Shi Xu a face-saving option. Shi Xu simply smiled, not committing.
Director Shen waved him off. Shi Xu said goodbye and left.
With no missions that day, most people were at the bureau. Hearing of Shi Xu’s return, many assumed he had been reinstated.
It was his scheduled training day. Some gathered in the training room, waiting for him.
After half an hour, with no sign of him, someone went to inquire, returning with shocking news: Shi Xu had resigned.
Shi Xu’s fame grew after the incident that made him a hero.
His prominent family, gentle demeanor, and unparalleled combat skills made him the ideal partner for many.
Both espers and ordinary humans knew of him, his fame surpassing even top celebrities.
After Shi Xu left, Director Shen announced his resignation and named his successor.
But the successor wasn’t their main concern. Everyone wanted to know why Shi Xu resigned.
[A friend who works at the bureau told me it’s related to the recent incident. Captain Shi was heartbroken and left.]
[Heartbroken? What did you do to our Captain Shi?!]
[The Anomaly Management Bureau without Captain Shi feels unsafe. I miss his training sessions.]
[Shut up, hypocrites! You called him a demon when he was here! What’s the point of regretting it now?!]
[So why did he resign? Anyone know the real reason?]
[No one can replace Captain Shi. His name is synonymous with safety. No one else can compare!]
Shi Xu met Qi Yu at a Western restaurant 500 meters from the Anomaly Management Bureau for afternoon tea, a farewell of sorts.
They chose a private room, ordering a few dishes and a chocolate cake.
Qi Yu scrolled through his phone.
Director Shen had announced the news on the bureau’s official social media account, tagging Shi Xu, sparking a heated discussion.
With each refresh, hundreds of new comments appeared, mostly expressing concern and speculating about the reason for his resignation.
“Tsk, they criticized you constantly when you were here, and now they suddenly miss you. I’ve seen their true colors…”
Shi Xu took a piece of cake. “What do you mean ‘when I was here’? As if I’m dead.”
Qi Yu chuckled. “You know what I mean. That’s not the point!”
Shi Xu: “Let them say what they want.”
Qi Yu sighed. “I really want to tell your fans the truth, let them scold those ungrateful bastards. You treated them well, always helping them, taking on all the responsibility. They enjoyed the benefits, but the moment trouble arose, they distanced themselves, afraid of taking the blame. After this incident, I finally understand. You were too kind to them, making them take you for granted. It’s better to stay away from them.”
“You wouldn’t believe how many people stopped me, asking why you left, if it was because of Lin Zhi, if you were disappointed and heartbroken. I wanted to say yes, you were their captain, Lin Zhi was from the Esper Monitoring Department, they didn’t trust you, but believed his lies!”
“But I didn’t. They asked me to tell you they’re sorry. I wanted to roll my eyes. Anyone can say sorry. If they were truly sorry, they would apologize to you directly, not through me! So insincere!”
After Qi Yu’s rant, Shi Xu asked calmly, “Finished?”
“No!” Qi Yu huffed. “I can go on all day!”
“Then continue.” Shi Xu nodded, unfazed by his friend’s outburst, continuing to enjoy his cake.
He seemed content, unaffected by the recent events or Qi Yu’s words.
Qi Yu admired his composure, realizing Shi Xu had known all along that these people weren’t trustworthy. He helped them because he was their captain, it was his responsibility.
Now that he was no longer captain, their safety was no longer his concern.
Leaving the Anomaly Management Bureau was a good thing. He no longer had to bear the burden.
“More work for the capable. How ironic,” Qi Yu grumbled.
Shi Xu smiled without commenting.
