Chapter 14: The Spoiled Villain in a Period Novel 14
Shu He wasn’t actually asleep.
The road from Wang Family Village to Shuian Town was unpaved and not smooth. The bus would occasionally jolt as it drove.
The speed was fast, and the jolting made his head spin uncomfortably, preventing him from finding any peace.
The more Shu He thought about it, the sadder he became. He pouted. Feeling Xu Nongqing’s hand on his face, he opened his moist eyes.
The scene before him left him stunned.
Silently, the distance between them had become extremely close.
Shu He’s head was tilted, resting in the crook of Xu Nongqing’s neck. He lifted his lashes, and his beautiful, innocent almond eyes reflected the man’s profile, so close.
His features were handsome, his gaze lowered and focused.
He seemed to have noticed that he was awake. His dark eyes paused for a moment, but he didn’t deliberately restrain his actions.
Xu Nongqing held Shu He and lowered his head. Beneath his turbulent dark eyes, he silently drew closer. Shu He only felt his cold cheek being pressed against his, his breath and thoughts invaded. His sensitive ear was also filled with the man’s somewhat scorching breath.
This suddenness made Shu He almost forget about his carsickness.
He widened his moist eyes, his slender white fingers clutching Xu Nongqing’s sleeve in confusion. His pinky finger curled up, tugging at his clothes.
“You…” Shu He’s voice was soft and thin, a little hesitant and timid. “What are you doing?”
Xu Nongqing lowered his emotion-filled dark eyes.
He pressed his face against Shu He’s, an act of intimacy and dependence that was almost cloying. Silently, it filled Xu Nongqing’s heart to the point of overflowing. An uncontrollable desire spread from his throat to his limbs.
He couldn’t hold it in any longer.
As long as he could see Shu He for one more day, some things were destined to be impossible to ignore. Since he couldn’t suppress it, he might as well let it out and let it grow wild.
He liked Shu He.
He had liked him from the first glance in the rain.
Shu He didn’t understand why Xu Nongqing wasn’t speaking. He moved, randomly raising his hand to touch Xu Nongqing’s face and push him away.
Xu Nongqing followed the force of his hand and lifted his head. The dark hair on his forehead half-covered his sharp brow. He could still faintly smell the fresh scent from the boy’s fingers in his breath, and for a moment, his dark pupils deepened.
He wasn’t sure if it was his imagination, but Shu He felt that Xu Nongqing had just brushed against his hand… and his ear.
It felt like he had kissed him.
“What are you doing?” Shu He moved from Xu Nongqing’s neck and sat up straight, his hands on his shoulders as he stared at him, his expression quite serious.
But the small dimples on his cheeks were faintly visible, making his serious posture look even cuter.
Not to mention, Shu He was still sitting on Xu Nongqing’s lap.
He had no authority at all.
Silently, a silence spread through the stuffy bus.
Xu Nongqing lowered his eyes. After a long moment, he finally opened his mouth and said, “I don’t know.”
Shu He: “You’re fooling me. How can you not know what you’re doing?”
Xu Nongqing looked up at him again, throwing the question back:
“What do you think I’m doing?”
…?
Bad protagonist!
He was asking because he didn’t know.
Shu He puffed out his cheeks, suddenly propped himself up on Xu Nongqing’s shoulders, and got off him, sitting back in his original seat.
He mumbled a few words. If he didn’t want to say, then he didn’t have to. Well, aren’t you impressive. The little villain wasn’t curious at all.
Shu He rested his head against the edge of the window, his face pale as he closed his eyes, no longer speaking to Xu Nongqing.
The journey was a full hour long.
The bus was quite steep, and would occasionally hit a rock with a thud.
Shu He only maintained his aloofness for a minute before giving in when Xu Nongqing offered an olive branch. He deliberately kept a straight face as he let Xu Nongqing take his wrist and coaxingly pull him closer, telling him to lean against him and sleep.
That’s right, Shu He thought the protagonist was trying to please him.
After all, a villain’s anger was terrifying.
The protagonist hadn’t risen yet and had no capital to fight against him, so to avoid angering him, he could only be a wise man who submitted to circumstances.
Shu He mumbled, resting his head on Xu Nongqing’s shoulder. He closed his eyes but didn’t forget to remind him, “Don’t press against me, okay? I’m going to sleep. If you wake me up, I’ll make you pay.”
Xu Nongqing: “Mm.”
Shu He contentedly prepared for sleep.
*
Today was market day in Shuian Town.
It was very crowded and lively, with vendors lining the streets.
When Shu He got off the bus, his steps were unsteady.
He leaned weakly against Xu Nongqing, his already pale cheeks looking even paler, his brow sickly. The trip to the town had taken half his life.
Xu Nongqing kept his eyes on him, reaching out to touch his face. “You sit here and wait for me for a bit.”
Shu He sat on a bench at the intersection.
The cold wind was sharp, like it had thorns. It woke Shu He up a little. He was so cold he pulled up the hood from behind him, completely covering himself.
Then he bent over and curled up, resting his head on his legs. He looked like a cat with its paws tucked in, his cheeks slightly puffed out. 【Brother 1, is there any progress on my mission?】
He didn’t know how Xu Nongqing saw him now.
To what extent did he hate him? Was it enough to support the idea of rising up?
Shu He thought dejectedly, his head lowered. He wanted to leave. He didn’t want to live here anymore.
The protagonist had no ambition at all. He couldn’t just waste his time here, right? Life here was so hard.
Seeing him like this, the system’s cold, mechanical voice had a rare, subtle fluctuation. 【The progress is good.】
【Work a little harder, give him another push, and he’ll probably have a complete epiphany and want to strive for more.】
【After that, you can go straight back to the Shu family and live a comfortable life, waiting until the protagonist has completely risen and has a strong career. Then the mission will be complete.】
Actually, the progress was already sufficient.
It just hadn’t figured out why the protagonist hadn’t made a move yet.
Shu He’s head, which was resting on his legs, paused slightly. He lifted his face, his eyes widening in surprise.
The mission progress was good?
Shu He tilted his head blankly. He saw Xu Nongqing cooking for him and knitting scarves for him every day, with no intention of reading the business books he had given him. He had always thought the mission progress was minimal and was about to lose his motivation.
Hearing this now, Shu He finally regained some of his spirit. He put his hands in his pockets and stood up. As his energy was replenished, he saw Xu Nongqing walking towards him.
“Motion sickness medicine.”
Xu Nongqing looked down at him, his tall figure blocking him, shielding him from the cold wind.
Shu He reached out and took it. “You went to buy this?”
Xu Nongqing: “Mm.”
After a pause, he added, “Do you have an appetite? Let’s go get breakfast.”
Shu He had no appetite, but he was greedy.
He nodded. Xu Nongqing took him to a breakfast shop and ordered two bowls of noodle soup.
The process of buying New Year’s supplies was both tedious and novel for Shu He. Xu Nongqing took him through the streets. Shu He pointed at everything he saw and wanted to buy it.
Especially fireworks. Shu He really wanted them.
He dragged Xu Nongqing to buy them. Even when Xu Nongqing said he couldn’t carry that much, he insisted. In the end, Xu Nongqing still bought them, temporarily leaving them at the shop to be picked up when they got on the bus.
As they left the fireworks shop, Xu Nongqing lifted his dark eyes slightly and stared at a photo studio for a few seconds.
He held Shu He’s slender wrist and led him over.
Huh?
Shu He asked, “Are you going to take a picture?”
Before Xu Nongqing could speak, Shu He suddenly said “Ah” again and blankly touched the somewhat cool snowflakes on his face.
He was stunned and looked up at the sky.
Xu Nongqing said, “It’s snowing.”
Snow.
Shu He had heard of such a thing.
In the interstellar era, most planets didn’t snow. Only a few had four seasons, and winter was the season for snow.
He had never seen snow, but he had heard it was beautiful, a vast expanse of white. You could even pick it up, play with it, build snowmen, and have snowball fights.
Shu He’s parents had never seen snow either.
He really wanted to open his terminal and take a picture.
He wanted to share it in the “Loving Family” group chat with over a hundred monster parents.
But now Shu He had no tool to take a picture.
He watched, his eyes getting a little moist. He turned his head and said to Xu Nongqing, his lips pursed, “Xu Nongqing, I miss my family.”
Xu Nongqing looked at him without speaking.
His dark eyes lowered for no reason, and the hand holding Shu He’s wrist tightened silently.
The veins on the back of his hand were prominent.
Shu He would have to leave sooner or later.
Perhaps after the New Year, or perhaps in the spring.
Xu Nongqing pulled Shu He. Shu He looked at him in confusion and followed his pull into the photo studio.
“Taking a picture, you two?” The photo studio owner looked up at the two who had come in, his gaze lingering on Shu He for a while.
He had never seen someone so fresh and delicate. He didn’t look like he was from around here. Even the big stars on the screen were no match.
Xu Nongqing: “A group photo.”
“Alright, come with me.” The owner went behind the scenes. He set up the lighting board, then hung up a blue cloth for the background, telling the two to sit in the middle.
Shu He sat down curiously.
The somewhat warm light shone on his pale face, his almond eyes sparkling and dazzling.
Even before the picture was taken, the owner was sure he would be extremely photogenic. Speaking of which, both of these brothers were good-looking.
They were suitable to be stars.
It was a pity that Shuian Town was a small place with no talent scouts.
Even with talent, it was hard to make it big.
The owner shook his head and sighed, not knowing what he was regretting. He lowered the curtain and was about to leave the lighting board when he suddenly heard Xu Nongqing ask:
“Is there no red cloth?”
Xu Nongqing didn’t sit down next to Shu He right away. Instead, he quietly watched the owner and asked, his voice a little low.
So low that the owner wasn’t sure if he had heard correctly. After all, the question was really…
The owner said “Uh,” and glanced at Xu Nongqing hesitantly. “For regular photos, we usually use a white or blue background. If you want red, that’s for wedding photos.”
Xu Nongqing asked, “Can’t we use it?”
“…Of course you can.” The owner went to change the cloth to red.
Although he thought Xu Nongqing’s request was a little strange, he didn’t think much of it. After adjusting the lighting, the owner went to the camera. He fixed the tripod and squinted to adjust it.
“Very good… this position, you two get a little closer.”
Xu Nongqing sat down next to Shu He.
Shu He actually thought the whole thing was a little strange. Why were they suddenly taking a picture?
He hesitated, but still followed the owner’s instructions and moved closer to Xu Nongqing. He placed his hands obediently on his knees, his pinky finger lightly touching Xu Nongqing’s.
The owner said, “Mm… cheese, smile a little. Show off your deep brotherly bond.”
