Chapter 22: The Spoiled Villain in a Period Novel 22
The four bodyguards who had come along were the same ones who had protected Shu He last year.
They knew the way, so after packing the luggage, they brought Qiao Zelan to find the young master.
Qiao Zelan confirmed the location and slowly came to a stop. His gaze went into the courtyard and landed on the tall, straight man standing in front of Shu He.
The slender boy looked small in front of him, as if he could be completely enveloped in his arms with one hand.
The distance between them was also too close.
From this angle, it even looked like they had just been kissing.
Hearing the voices of Qiao Zelan and the bodyguards, Shu He guiltily covered his mouth. He didn’t dare to turn around at all, forcing himself to stand still and wipe away his tears before cautiously turning back.
“Teacher.”
A faint blush colored Shu He’s pale cheeks. He called out, his almond eyes darting to the side, his voice still a little nasal as he quickly introduced them, “This is my violin teacher, Qiao Zelan, the one I mentioned in the letter. And this is Xu Nongqing. I’m staying with him.”
As if afraid Qiao Zelan would ask something, he spoke very quickly, but in Qiao Zelan’s eyes, it was a clear attempt to cover something up.
Qiao Zelan narrowed his eyes.
His gaze swept over the slight redness at the corners of Shu He’s eyes, then fixed on his moist, red lips.
After a moment, Qiao Zelan walked into the courtyard.
Qiao Zelan looked at the indifferent Xu Nongqing and smiled peacefully. “Is that so? Hello, Mr. Xu. Little He is a bit spoiled. Thank you for your trouble while he’s staying here.”
Beneath the calm, the air was inexplicably stagnant.
Xu Nongqing’s dark eyes were cold.
His gaze towards Qiao Zelan was emotionless, his tone indifferent. “It’s not the first time he’s stayed. This place is like his home.”
“Little He’s home is in the Capital. It can’t be counted like that.”
Qiao Zelan changed the subject again. “But Little He seems to like it here very much. The scenery nearby is indeed nice. Little He, why don’t you show your teacher around?”
Ah.
Shu He was troubled. He didn’t really want to.
He was so tired, and still a little carsick.
Shu He didn’t refuse outright. He puffed out his cheeks, stood on his tiptoes, and waved to the bodyguards outside. “Brother Chen, why don’t you show Teacher Qiao around? The scenery by the field to the south is nice, and you can even catch fish.”
Qiao Zelan: “…”
“Alright.” Brother Chen had lived here with Shu He for over half a year and of course knew where he was talking about.
Hearing this, he immediately stepped forward to take Qiao Zelan on a tour. After a moment of silence, Qiao Zelan followed.
The door closed, and Shu He turned around with a sigh of relief.
Before he could react, he was once again pulled into Xu Nongqing’s arms.
This time, the kiss was much lighter. Shu He’s almond eyes were open, his lashes fluttering as he panted with his lips half-parted.
Xu Nongqing pressed his forehead against his, his hand stroking the back of his neck. Only then did he ask in a low voice, “Why is there an outsider?”
He was talking about Qiao Zelan.
Shu He’s eyes were moist. He panted in small gasps, and after a long moment, he managed to speak. “I have a violin competition next year. Teacher Qiao said he came to supervise my studies.”
“You’re leaving again next year?”
Shu He’s almond eyes guiltily darted away.
It wasn’t just next year.
He was going to break up with the protagonist in a little while.
Xu Nongqing didn’t get an answer and didn’t ask again. In this small, dilapidated room, he pressed against Shu He and whispered how much he had missed him.
The difficulty of a long-distance relationship wasn’t the distance.
It was the various thoughts that arose from not being able to see each other.
He would wonder if Shu He would come back after returning home.
He would wonder if Shu He would meet someone else he was interested in.
He would also wonder if Shu He would get tired of it and want to end things with him.
These emotions didn’t ease even when he saw Shu He at this moment. He could only kiss him again and again to barely fill his empty heart.
Shu He could feel Xu Nongqing’s deep and overflowing affection for him.
When they broke up, would the protagonist cry, or would he get angry and beat him up…
Meanwhile, after Qiao Zelan left with the bodyguard, he consciously tried to learn some things about Shu He’s time in this village.
But the bodyguard actually didn’t know much either.
Shu He’s life was too simple.
In the winter, he would stay cooped up in the house and rarely go out.
Qiao Zelan: “How is his relationship with Mr. Xu?”
“Pretty good,” the bodyguard said. “When he first came, the young master didn’t like Mr. Xu very much. But after a while, their relationship naturally got better.”
After walking for a while, a stage appeared in front of them. On the stage, an opera troupe that specialized in performing in various villages was currently performing.
Below, the audience was mostly elderly people who had nothing better to do than to listen to the opera.
Qiao Zelan stopped.
He crossed his arms and watched the opera for a while, lost in thought. After a moment, he turned to the bodyguard and said, “Little He is going to be on the big stage in the future, right?”
The bodyguard didn’t understand what he meant. “Yes. What’s wrong, Mr. Qiao?”
“He’s so outstanding. He has to be with someone who is worthy of him.” Qiao Zelan smiled, his gaze still on the stage. “Not just anyone should dare to covet him.”
The bodyguard was confused. “?”
Who?
But Qiao Zelan had no intention of explaining further.
He walked towards the stage and negotiated something with the village committee.
In October, Shu He learned from Qiao Zelan that he had arranged an event for him, to get him used to the feeling of performing on a big stage.
At the stage, many people would come to support him and listen to his performance. Shu He was completely stunned when he heard this, his beautiful almond eyes wide.
“You were very nervous during your first competition, and you didn’t get desensitized in the subsequent ones either.”
Qiao Zelan took the violin and casually played a few nice notes.
“Little He, you need to get desensitized.”
Shu He had enough talent.
He was outstanding, had a good family background, and was good-looking.
If he didn’t shine a little, he would really get stuck with some mud that he couldn’t shake off.
Qiao Zelan smiled. “Don’t hesitate. There will be more audience members at next year’s competition. Right now, it’s just some old people.”
Shu He pursed his lips, a small dimple appearing on his cheek.
He said dryly, “Teacher Qiao, you care more about my future than I do.”
“Of course.” As if he thought there was something wrong with his words, Qiao Zelan raised an eyebrow and said, “I’m your teacher. If I don’t care about your future, then who will? That Xu Nongqing?”
Shu He tilted his head up slightly, bewildered.
What did this have to do with Xu Nongqing?
“It’s settled then.”
Qiao Zelan changed the subject and handed the violin to Shu He. “The time is tomorrow night.”
Shu He took the violin.
He hesitated and said “Oh.”
During the short October holiday, Wang Wanwan received a call from her family.
They said the little young master was back.
Wang Wanwan, who had originally planned to work part-time during these few days of vacation, instantly changed her plans and returned to the village.
She was actually a little strange why her mother had specifically reminded her of this.
Wang Wanwan didn’t think much of it. The first thing she did when she got home was to go out.
Her mother quickly stopped her. Wang Wanwan was dragged into a corner, frowning as she watched her mother wink at her and say, “Wanwan, do you like Young Master Shu?”
“…”
Seeing that she didn’t speak, her mother didn’t mind. “If you like him, there’s an opportunity right here. Take it.”
A folded piece of paper was forcefully stuffed into her palm.
Wang Wanwan subconsciously looked down. “What’s this?”
“Medicine.” Her mother gripped Wang Wanwan’s hand and lowered her voice. “That kind of medicine, from the old Chinese doctor at the village entrance. If you get pregnant, you won’t have to go to school anymore! Then you can get more money for your brother to get married.”
Wang Wanwan’s mind went blank.
She suddenly shook off her mother’s hand. Her mother looked at her in astonishment.
“Are you crazy?!” Wang Wanwan looked at her mother in disbelief. “I’m still in school. If I get pregnant, how will I face people in the future?”
“Quiet down!” Her mother was also a little annoyed by her attitude. “I never wanted you to waste money on school in the first place. Now that you’ve seen the outside world, and there’s a rare opportunity in front of you, the little young master seems to be okay with you. If you get pregnant, can he just ignore it?”
“Besides, you’re twenty, not young anymore. In our time, we would have had children long ago!”
Wang Wanwan was trembling with anger.
She liked Shu He.
She did like Shu He.
She had initially approached Shu He with this intention, but later she genuinely came to like boys with his personality.
But even so, she had no intention of resorting to such means!
Besides, was he someone she could plot against just because she wanted to?!
She had her pride.
Wang Wanwan took a deep breath in anger. “Mom, was this your idea?”
“It was everyone’s idea.”
Wang Zhi walked in from outside, his expression not very good as he said to Wang Wanwan, “If you’re not willing, there are plenty of others who are.”
Why was Wang Zhi here too??
Wang Wanwan looked at her cousin angrily. Without opportunities, Wang Zhi would most likely end up as a nobody. She now found it disgusting to even say another word to him. “Then why don’t you go?”
Wang Zhi’s eyes flickered.
He rubbed his hands and said in a joking tone, “That’s fine too.”
“Get lost.” Wang Wanwan pushed him out and slammed the door, ignoring Wang Zhi’s curses.
She turned back to look at her mother. “I’ll think about it.”
Her mother’s eyes darted around. “It’s good that you’ll consider it… Young Master Shu should be at the stage now. Why don’t you go take a look?”
Wang Wanwan clutched the packet of medicine in her palm.
After a long time, she pushed open the door, pushed past Wang Zhi, and walked out.
Wang Zhi cursed angrily.
When she found the stage, Wang Wanwan realized there were many old people nearby, even from the neighboring village. She clutched the packet of medicine, her eyes darting around aimlessly, and finally saw Shu He on a small path.
She hadn’t seen him in half a year, and the boy hadn’t changed at all.
He was surrounded by a crowd, his appearance extremely beautiful. The dim yellow light couldn’t hide his pale skin and his noble, clean temperament.
He was dressed simply, in shorts and a small shirt, with a pair of white sneakers. His slender fingers were holding a violin worth tens of thousands, and he was talking to someone on the side.
So dazzling.
Unattainable.
Before long, Shu He took his violin and stood on the nearly two-meter-high stage. Below, there was a large crowd. He puffed out his cheeks, feeling like he was giving a concert.
A little nervous.
OoO
The old people sat down in an orderly fashion, full of novelty and anticipation.
They all looked at the beautiful child on the stage with admiration. This was the first time in their long lives that they had heard such an instrument.
Xu Nongqing was among them.
He looked up, his gaze focused on the boy on the stage. As if because of nervousness, Shu He’s sparkling almond eyes darted around, and also landed on him, their eyes meeting.
“Mr. Xu.”
An untimely voice cut in. Xu Nongqing paused slightly and turned his head to see Qiao Zelan sitting in another chair, his expression cold.
Qiao Zelan was wearing a suit today. The clothes were all of good quality fabric and well-tailored.
He smiled, his gaze also turning to Shu He, and asked as if making small talk, “Mr. Xu and my student have known each other for a year now, right?”
A trace of indifferent annoyance flashed in Xu Nongqing’s eyes.
Qiao Zelan shrugged nonchalantly. “It seems Mr. Xu doesn’t like to talk.”
“Has Little He mentioned his family to Mr. Xu?”
“Has he mentioned to you…” Qiao Zelan seemed to be speaking as the thoughts came to him.
He paused appropriately, then turned his head to look at Xu Nongqing and said in a natural tone, “Has Little He mentioned to you that he has a fiancée of equal social standing?”
