Chapter 173
The school forum quickly updated with the news of the two handsome brothers’ relationship.
The students who had been shipping them were both excited and disappointed.
[So, beauty genes really do run in the family!]
[I can’t even imagine. If I were dating the younger brother, but the older brother suddenly showed interest in me, who would I choose?]
Some die-hard fans, however, ignoring the sibling connection, continued to ship them relentlessly.
Xing Nuo, not a social media enthusiast, unaware of the forum’s existence,
was busy studying, diligently taking notes and paying attention in class.
High school students used every break to catch up on sleep, especially after the first afternoon class, the warm sunlight streaming through the windows, making them drowsy.
Xing Nuo, his chin resting on his hand, his eyes half-closed, was also about to drift off
when a sudden beep echoed in his mind, jolting him awake.
He had forgotten when it had started, this occasional, random, cold, mechanical beep that made him question his sanity.
But nothing ever happened after the beep, as if it was just a hallucination.
He felt like something was living inside his head,
but after seven or eight years of nothing happening, he had started to think he was just imagining things.
Now awake, he went to get some water.
At the classroom door, he bumped into An Zimuo, who casually slung an arm around his neck, grinning.
“Hey, Xing Nuo! Missed me?”
An Zimuo and Xing Nuo had been classmates since elementary school, only separated during middle school, but, living in the same complex, they were still close, often walking to and from school together.
Xing Nuo smiled, looking at An Zimuo’s dark skin, which seemed even darker in the sunlight, and gently removed his arm from his neck.
“No. How’s class?”
An Zimuo, slumping onto the empty seat next to Xing Nuo’s, his chin resting on his hand, started complaining about his teacher.
“You won’t believe how horrible our chemistry teacher’s homework assignments are! I’m definitely not choosing science…”
Xing Nuo listened patiently, then, as the bell was about to ring, poked An Zimuo.
“Class starting soon.”
An Zimuo grinned, his hands on his hips.
“Jealous? We have PE next! Later!”
Xing Nuo smiled, watching him run off.
Qingqing, his best friend from elementary school, had gone to a different high school, and Yiyi had moved away. He hadn’t seen them in years.
He sighed softly, opened his textbook, and started previewing the next lesson.
High school meant evening self-study sessions.
Fortunately, for first-year students, it ended around nine. Xing Nuo, his backpack on, rode his electric scooter home, enjoying the cool evening breeze.
The streets were still bustling with people enjoying the cool air, walking their dogs, children playing, their voices filling the air.
Xing Nuo, feeling the vibrant energy of the city, smiled faintly.
As he rode past a small alley, he saw a pregnant woman sitting on the curb, her face contorted in pain.
He quickly stopped and hurried over.
“Are you okay, ma’am?”
The woman, her large belly straining against her loose-fitting clothes, clutched her stomach and groaned.
“I…I think I’m about to give birth! Help me!”
Xing Nuo, panicked, his hands fluttering uselessly, said:
“I’ll call an ambulance! Hang in there! They’ll be here soon!”
He took out his phone, but the screen was black, unresponsive.
He frowned, puzzled. I didn’t use it much today. Is the battery dead?
But the woman’s cries of pain, like nails on a chalkboard, made his scalp tingle, goosebumps erupting on his arms.
He looked back and saw the woman looking up at him, her eyes dark and sinister, her nostrils flaring.
“Did you call yet?”
Xing Nuo, sensing something was wrong, his eyes flickering, thought he saw the woman’s belly moving strangely.
He rubbed his eyes, trying to see clearly, then heard the woman’s scream again.
“Hurry up! If you can’t call, just take me to the hospital! It’s not far!”
Xing Nuo, his unease growing, took a step back.
“My phone might be dead. I’ll borrow someone’s phone. Wait here.”
He felt something was off about this woman, but he couldn’t just leave her if she really needed help.
But the woman grabbed his leg, stopping him.
“No! Don’t leave me! My stomach hurts!”
Her cries, loud and piercing, attracted the attention of other passersby.
“What’s wrong?”
“Call an ambulance! She’s pregnant! She needs to go to the hospital!”
Several people took out their phones, but strangely, like Xing Nuo’s, their screens were also black.
“What the…my phone’s dead?”
“Is there something wrong with the signal here? I haven’t heard anything about a magnetic storm.”
Xing Nuo, slightly relieved that he wasn’t alone, watched as a young woman tried to comfort the pregnant woman, whose cries continued unabated.
“Can you hurry up?! It hurts so much!”
“Ah!”
The young woman screamed as the pregnant woman suddenly bit her arm, tearing off a chunk of flesh, blood gushing from the wound.
“What the hell?! You can’t just bite people!”
“Look at her arm! Almost to the bone!”
The young woman, a university student with her hair in a bun, her face pale, clutched her bleeding arm and stumbled back.
Xing Nuo, his gaze fixed on the woman’s belly, which seemed to be emitting a dark, smoky aura in the dim light, rubbed his eyes, then gasped.
The pregnant woman was eating the piece of flesh she had just torn from the young woman’s arm, her face filled with a disturbingly genuine pleasure, chewing slowly, a trickle of blood running down her chin and onto her belly.
“So delicious!”
The gruesome scene stunned the onlookers into silence.
Xing Nuo, watching closely, noticed that the blood from the young woman’s wound, instead of pooling on the ground, seemed to be absorbed by the pregnant woman’s belly.
He took a step back, grabbed the young woman’s hand, and pulled her away from the crowd.
“Run!”
His instincts screamed danger. This young woman was in mortal peril.
The young woman, clutching her bleeding arm, still confused, saw the pregnant woman lunge at her, her arms outstretched.
“So delicious! Stay here! Be my baby!”
The young woman screamed, covering her head, her heart pounding.
She braced herself for the impact, but then saw the young boy who had pulled her away kick the pregnant woman, sending her sprawling.
The pregnant woman, clutching her belly, her face contorted in pain, wailed:
“Why did you kick me?! What if something happens to my baby?!”
A middle-aged man, seeing her distress, although finding the situation strange, turned to Xing Nuo and scolded him:
“Young man, how can you be so violent?! She’s pregnant!”
Seeing the young woman hiding behind Xing Nuo, he sneered, his gaze lascivious.
“Playing the hero, are we? I should record this and show everyone how you treat pregnant women!”
The young woman, wanting to defend Xing Nuo, was about to speak when Xing Nuo said:
“Her tummy…not right. You no notice? No blood on her.”
The blood from the young woman’s wound, which had stained the pregnant woman’s clothes, was gone.
A few of the onlookers, realizing something was wrong, also looked at the woman, their faces filled with a growing unease.
But the middle-aged man continued to berate Xing Nuo, grabbing his arm, demanding an apology.
“Don’t give me that! You pretty boys are all the same, all talk and no action! Apologize to her!”
Xing Nuo, pushed forward, almost stumbled into the pregnant woman, who had stood up.
He gasped, seeing that she was taller than him.
Her eyes were cold and sinister, her lips curving into a creepy smile.
“You smell delicious too. How about I take a bite?”
Xing Nuo’s heart pounded, and a drop of sweat trickled down his forehead. He quickly backed away.
If he had been even a second slower, she would have grabbed him.
“Run! What are you waiting for?!” he yelled at the stunned onlookers, who, snapping out of their trance, started running, some still confused.
“What’s going on?! What’s wrong with that woman? Did a dog bite her or something?!”
