Chapter 46
A strange silence fell over Shen Baizhou’s classroom.
The monster teacher, his hands trembling as he held the textbook, stood at the front, black smoke seeping from his forehead, his lips quivering.
“…Th-this problem uses…the concepts from…chapter one…we…we can first calculate the velocity…”
Under Shen Baizhou’s menacing glare from the back row, the monster teacher wanted to eat the textbook.
Why do I have to study even though I’m a monster?!
He only knew how to grade tests based on the answer key. He didn’t actually understand the material!
Shen Baizhou, frowning, flipped through his physics test, increasingly frustrated.
The other students, sensing something, glanced at him nervously, not daring to speak.
Finally, the monster teacher’s bumbling explanation pushed Shen Baizhou over the edge, and he interrupted.
“You don’t know how to teach. Get another teacher.”
He wasn’t going to let anything interfere with his physics lesson today!
The monster teacher, relieved, nodded and scurried out of the classroom without looking back.
Xing Nuo opened the firefly box, his eyes widening in surprise at the small, glowing firefly.
Following the stranger’s instructions, he clasped his hands together and thought:
Daddy! Big Brother! Teacher Xiao Song!
The firefly flickered, its light dimming as it processed the multiple names.
Xing Nuo, seeing it motionless, tilted his head and poked it with his finger.
“Why you no move?”
He poked it again. “Fly! Take Zaizai find people!”
But the firefly remained still, its faint, warm light flickering, as if about to go out.
Xing Nuo scratched his chin, thought for a moment, then smacked his forehead.
“Remembered! Need say name!”
He tried to remember, but his mind was blank.
What was Daddy’s name?
And Teacher Xiao Song? Was her name just Xiao Song?
He blinked, and a spark of recognition flickered in his eyes.
He remembered! His brother’s name was Shen Baizhou!
Daddy had yelled at Big Brother when he got a 7 on his chemistry test:
“Shen Baizhou, are you an idiot?!”
Remembering the name, Xing Nuo quickly thought:
Shen Baizhou!
The little firefly, receiving the correct signal, brightened, flickered, and flew down the hallway.
Xing Nuo, holding his flashlight, hurried after it.
The hallway was dark, the air thick and heavy, swallowing all light.
Only the small circle illuminated by Xing Nuo’s flashlight was visible.
He walked for what felt like a long time before reaching the next classroom.
Inside, people were fighting and screaming, tearing and biting each other in a frenzy.
Fortunately, the firefly didn’t stop, and Xing Nuo, not looking inside, continued down the hallway.
He reached the end of the hallway.
The firefly hovered at the top of the stairwell, waiting for him.
But going down the stairs wasn’t easy for Xing Nuo, especially with the small wooden chair still attached to his bottom.
He frowned, thought for a moment, then lay down on his stomach and started crawling down backwards.
His small hands gripped the edge of each step, his feet carefully feeling for the next step.
Sweat dripped down his forehead, and he straightened up, panting.
He hadn’t even gone down one flight of stairs, and he was already exhausted. He sat down on his chair to rest.
He wiped his sweat, then smiled.
Good thing Zaizai brought chair!
Otherwise, climbing stairs so tiring…no place to rest.
After resting for a while, he stood up and continued crawling down.
He followed the firefly down two flights of stairs.
Finally, the firefly stopped on the third floor.
Xing Nuo watched as it floated down the hallway and sighed in relief, wiping his sweat.
Big Brother high school student…must be in classroom!
He walked down the hallway, the sound of his slippers echoing in the silence.
Suddenly, he was lifted by the back of his collar.
“Let’s see what little thing we have here.”
A female teacher with black-framed glasses, her face stern, saw Xing Nuo clearly in the dark hallway.
“Oh my, a human cub!”
The monster teacher licked her lips, her mouth watering, wanting to swallow him whole.
“Too bad you’re not from a dungeon in this school.”
Xing Nuo’s kindergarten had only been partially consumed by the energy from the horror world.
So, his dungeon wasn’t connected to the others, and the horror world monsters couldn’t directly sense or devour him.
Only after all the humans in the partially consumed areas died would that part of the real world become part of the horror world.
The monster teacher’s face lit up with a cruel smile.
“Oh, but when our school consumes more people…”
She trailed off, her laughter manic.
Xing Nuo, unable to see her face, hearing her strange laughter, struggled, kicking his little feet.
“Let me go!”
The small firefly continued to fly down the hallway, not waiting for him.
Xing Nuo watched it go, his eyes wide with anxiety, kicking his feet.
He had to find his brother!
He struggled, but the monster teacher’s grip was too strong.
“I know who you are. The little one who escaped from class earlier? Very naughty, skipping class.”
The monster teacher’s face was filled with envy.
“This dungeon, merged with the human world, actually has such a tender little cub. I should have fought for this assignment!”
But for now, she could only reluctantly carry the little one back to the male monster teacher’s classroom.
Reaching the stairwell, Xing Nuo struggled even harder.
Suddenly, the grip on his collar loosened, and he fell to the floor with a thud.
“Ow!”
He landed on his knees, scraping them badly.
He slowly got up, clutching his knees, tears welling up in his eyes, and rubbed them.
But the female teacher’s cries of pain were much louder.
She had been thrown against the wall and now lay on the floor, semi-conscious.
Xing Nuo was about to run when he heard an excited voice.
“Xing Nuo!”
His flashlight fell to the floor. He picked it up and shone it on the small monster approaching him.
His eyes widened, and he shook his head slightly.
“Who you? I no know you.”
The little zombie wore a large, oversized hoodie and grinned, running towards Xing Nuo.
“Xing Nuo, don’t you remember me?”
The little zombie, whom he had met in the zombie dungeon, his face pale and bloodless in the flashlight beam, his speech no longer as halting, his movements no longer stiff, reached Xing Nuo and grinned.
“I’m Lu Qi.”
Xing Nuo didn’t remember the little zombie who had helped him escape the zombie horde. He replied politely:
“I Xing Nuo. You know me?”
Lu Qi nodded vigorously, his black hair bouncing.
“Yes. Why Xing Nuo here?”
He remembered Xing Nuo being carried away by a large monster, leaving the horror dungeon.
Lu Qi had wanted to follow, but his body had been too damaged, and he could only watch as Shen Baizhou took Xing Nuo away.
But he had later learned that the monster was Xing Nuo’s older brother, so he hadn’t worried about Xing Nuo’s safety.
Lu Qi took Xing Nuo’s hand and asked again.
“Why Xing Nuo here?”
Shouldn’t he be back in the real world?
Xing Nuo, too young to explain, just rubbed his knee.
“I…I don’t know. But I need find Big Brother!”
The bad teacher was bullying the children, and he needed his Big Brother to save them!
Lu Qi’s dark eyes lit up.
“I help Xing Nuo find!”
He was overjoyed to see Xing Nuo again.
Xing Nuo felt a strange sense of familiarity with Lu Qi, thinking he was a classmate from another kindergarten class.
“Okay! We find Big Brother…make bad teacher go away!”
Xing Nuo turned, limping slightly, wanting to follow the firefly.
But it had already disappeared into the darkness while he was being held by the monster teacher.
“Oh no! Firefly gone!” Xing Nuo cried, taking a couple of steps forward.
Lu Qi, holding his hand, looked down at Xing Nuo’s bleeding knee, his voice serious.
“Xing Nuo, your leg bleeding.”
Xing Nuo wiped away a tear.
“It’s okay. We find Big Brother.”
Big Brother would take him to soak in the pool and make it all better.
But Lu Qi disagreed, pulling Xing Nuo in the opposite direction.
“No, we heal first!”
Losing too much blood was dangerous!
Xing Nuo, unable to resist Lu Qi’s pull, his little feet dragging on the floor, was led to a storage room.
Lu Qi, seemingly unafraid of the monster-infested school, stood on tiptoe and turned on the light.
Xing Nuo, his eyes sensitive after being in the darkness for so long, shielded them with his hand.
“Where is this?”
He peeked through his fingers, looking around the room.
Lu Qi rummaged through the storage room and found a medical prop bandage.
“This is where I live.”
He wrapped the bandage around Xing Nuo’s knee, and the pain subsided almost instantly.
Xing Nuo wiggled his leg, no longer bleeding, and asked, puzzled:
“Xiao Qi, you live in school?”
The familiar nickname startled Lu Qi. He looked at Xing Nuo, as if seeing the past through him.
He grinned and nodded.
“Yes, I have to learn human things in school.”
