Only then did Lin Chuyun notice the color of the White Fox’s eyes. They were a deep, profound blue. To look into them was like staring into a deep ocean.
Strangely, however, what he felt was not the same kind of dazzling wonder. Instead, it was a powerful, overwhelming sense of familiarity.
He even had the sudden, wild urge to just go rolling around like crazy in the White Fox’s tails!
The White Fox had, of course, noticed the little trespassing beast. Originally, it wanted to just close its eyes and continue healing, but for some reason, its heart couldn’t help but feel a twinge of concern over the little thing’s tumble.
Finally, it opened its eyes again. One of the tails behind it flicked, gently curling up the little black cat and bringing it right in front of itself.
“What’s your name?” the White Fox asked, yet the language it spoke was human speech.
Lin Chuyun snapped out of his daze. He hesitated, blinking, and finally, using the method Feng Wu taught him, replied, “My name is…” Here, he paused abruptly, suddenly remembering Feng Wu’s strict warning. “…Little Black.”
Little Black…?
The White Fox’s brow furrowed slightly. It was certain it didn’t know any such Little Demon Beast. It looked Lin Chuyun up and down twice, then asked again, “How did you get in here?”
“Just… just walked in?” Lin Chuyun replied, confused.
The White Fox looked at him skeptically. This cave had been set with a Barrier by him; no one could approach without his permission. Yet, before this little Cat Demon fell, he hadn’t detected anyone entering.
Could it be because this kitten was simply too small, and thus failed to trigger the Barrier?
“What did you come here for?” The White Fox lay back down again, asking lazily.
Lin Chuyun explained the matter of the two Demon Beasts.
The White Fox let out a light laugh. “Don’t worry. The beasts on this mountain have no bad intentions. At most, they’re just curious about such a small creature.” Having said that, it leaned in closer and lowered its head to sniff at the little black cat.
“Why do you carry a human cultivator’s scent all over you?” the White Fox asked, its tone not very pleasant.
Lin Chuyun’s first reaction was that his identity had been exposed. Before he could even come up with an excuse, he heard the White Fox continue, “It smells cold and icy. Not a good smell at all.”
Cold and icy… Lin Chuyun was lost for a second, then quickly realized: the White Fox was talking about his little disciple’s scent. He had been with Feng Xixing constantly for over two months now; it was perfectly normal that he’d picked up his little disciple’s scent.
Seeing the little black cat silent, its expression clearly lost in thought, a look of understanding flashed in the White Fox’s eyes. “Is it your Master’s scent?”
“…No.” The little black cat made a feeble rebuttal. Why did all these Demon Beasts think alike? Feng Wu had also immediately assumed his little disciple was his Master.
But unlike Feng Wu, the White Fox had another answer. Seeing the little black cat deny the first guess, its expression shifted, carrying a hint of irritation. “Not your Master, then is it your Demon Mate?”
Demon Mate? His little disciple is his Demon Mate? How was that even possible?!
Lin Chuyun was almost driven delirious by these beasts’ wildly leaping logic. “No!!!”
The White Fox looked at the little black cat in front of it—that was now clearly angry—and its voice instinctively softened, even carrying a trace of appeasement. “Alright, alright, not that, not that.”
As it said this, it couldn’t help but be slightly taken aback. Why was it being so patient with this little black cat? If any other beast dared make such a racket in front of it, they’d have been smacked out by its paw long ago.
And now, not only did it have zero desire to smack the little Cat Demon out, it was actually, with great patience, starting to chat with the little black cat.
“You’re called Little Black. Did your parents give you that name?” the White Fox asked.
Lin Chuyun twitched his whiskers. “No…” A certain annoying little broken bird did.
“Then where are your parents?” the White Fox asked, uncomprehending.
The little black cat turned around on the Stone Platform, finally settling down to lie right in front of the White Fox’s head, his tail flicking gently behind him. Hearing the White Fox’s question, Lin Chuyun was suddenly stunned. For some reason, he suddenly thought of that man and woman who appeared in his dreams.
“I… don’t know…” This time, Lin Chuyun’s voice carried a note of uncertainty.
The White Fox assumed the little black cat didn’t wish to talk about its parents, so it didn’t press further, switching the topic. “Then who does that scent on you belong to?”
“It belongs to my disci… to a person I met suddenly.” He’d nearly slipped up and said “disciple”! Lin Chuyun corrected himself at lightning speed.
The White Fox was puzzled. Its tails swayed behind it. “A person you met suddenly?”
“Yes, just someone I met all of a sudden.” The little black cat blinked, seeming to think of that person, its eyes brimming with joy. “He treats me especially well.”
The White Fox’s heart felt an inexplicable, nameless prick of displeasure. It couldn’t help but press further. “How well?”
Lin Chuyun blinked, then said with absolute certainty, “He’s the person who treats me best.”
Even though Feng Xixing sometimes had a strange temper, his treatment of Lin Chuyun had always been gentle, and he took incredibly good care of him. Lin Chuyun couldn’t imagine if, when he first turned into a cat, the person beside him wasn’t Feng Xixing, would he have ever accepted the fact he was a Demon Beast so quickly?
The little black cat was clearly thinking of someone he liked. His tail swished contentedly behind him, and his green cat eyes were full of bright joy. The White Fox even suspected that if that person were here right now, the little black cat would pounce on him, rubbing against him while purring up a storm.
Thinking this, an irritation rose in the White Fox’s heart. It was the same feeling as having guarded a cub for a long, long time, only for it to be on the verge of being completely stolen away.
“So where is he now?” the White Fox asked.
If that human cultivator really treated the little black cat as well as he claimed, why was the kitten left on Spirit Beast Peak? Though the White Fox was always inside the cave healing, it knew the beasts on Spirit Beast Peak were all strays the kid Feng Wu had picked up.
Lin Chuyun hesitated for a moment, not saying that Feng Xixing was refining a sword, and instead answered evasively, “He went off to handle something. The day after tomorrow, he’ll come pick me up.”
That was clearly an excuse.
The White Fox flicked its tails behind it, pondering whether it should temporarily come out of seclusion for a bit. If that human cultivator really abandoned the little black cat, it would personally go avenge the kitten and, while at it, lure the little black cat back to its own cave to raise.
The cat and fox chatted away happily, and since the lighting in here was constantly dim, it was over two hours later when Lin Chuyun suddenly realized with a jolt that if he didn’t get out soon, Feng Wu would be back.
Thinking this, the little black cat quickly stood up, leaping down from the Stone Platform. “I have to go now. I’ll come see you again tomorrow.”
The White Fox was momentarily distracted, and just like that, it saw the little black cat dart into the tunnel from which it came and vanish from its sight. It hesitated on the Stone Platform for a moment, and then with a slight sway of its tails, its figure also instantly disappeared from the platform.
Lin Chuyun ran swiftly through the stone cave tunnels. He had just made it to the cave entrance when he heard Feng Wu’s voice outside. He instinctively slowed his steps, carefully poking his head out, and saw Feng Wu scolding two Demon Beasts.
It was those two from earlier today.
“You just refuse to listen to This King’s words, don’t you?! Now you’ve scared him off! Where is This King supposed to look for him?!” Feng Wu was absolutely livid.
The moment he got back today, he discovered Lin Chuyun was gone, and the entrance had the lingering scent of other Demon Beasts. He had clearly warned these beasts not to come near this cave, yet they just had to disobey!
And now look! Lin Chuyun was nowhere to be found!
Seeing Feng Wu so furious he was practically about to burst into flames, Lin Chuyun quickly called out, “Meow…”
I’m right here.
Feng Wu whipped his head around. Seeing Lin Chuyun standing at the cave entrance, an involuntary wave of relief washed over his heart. As for the two Demon Beasts, he was too tired to even keep scolding them, sending them straight off to find Qing Deng to receive their punishment.
“Where did you go?” Feng Wu returned to the cave entrance, bending down and scooping the little black cat into his palm.
Lin Chuyun didn’t dare say he’d met a White Fox in the deepest part of the cave. He just said that seeing those two beasts, he got scared and walked deeper into the cave, staying there until dark before finally coming out.
Feng Wu gave him a suspicious look, but didn’t dwell on it too much. After all, the one residing deep inside his cave had a temper even worse than his own. If Lin Chuyun had truly disturbed that being, he’d probably have been smacked into a meat patty by now.
Thinking of this, he still decided, out of a sense of due diligence, to give Lin Chuyun a word of warning. “There’s a really fierce Demon Beast living deep in the cave. If you disturb him, watch out or you’ll be eaten in one bite.”
Lin Chuyun, who had already met the White Fox, chatted with it all day, and was planning to go find it again tomorrow: “…Oh.”
Like I’d believe you!
