Chapter 24
When Bai Yan woke up the next day, his head still ached a little.
Auntie Chen was sitting by his bed, telling him in a soft voice that he had had a slight fever last night. The weather outside had cooled down, and to avoid worsening his condition, it was best for him to rest in the main house for the next two days.
It seemed there was something going on at the company, and the Young Master would probably be back very little recently. If he needed anything prepared for the start of school, he could just tell Assistant Song.
Bai Yan had just woken up, his head still dizzy. He nodded slowly, not knowing how much he had taken in.
A wisp of orange blossom scent seemed to float in the air. Bai Yan blinked, and the faint scent quickly dissipated, as if it had never been there.
His back was numb from lying down. Bai Yan threw back the covers, slowly shuffled to the bathroom, and after a simple wash, went downstairs to sip his meat congee.
As his taste buds reawakened, his sluggish brain began to turn again.
He subconsciously glanced at the empty seat opposite him and finally realized with a dawning slowness.
Mr. Pei is gone again.
Bai Yan lowered his gaze, a strange feeling of melancholy welling up inside him. So suddenly…
Everything was fine yesterday. Was there something urgent?
Mr. Pei didn’t even mention it to him.
Could it be… that he did something wrong last night?
The young man didn’t realize that his thoughts already contained a hint of worry and grievance, far exceeding the concern one would have for a contract partner.
The boundaries were gradually blurring with their time together.
The scent of scent-blocker hung in the air, and the last trace of orange blossom pheromones had completely dissipated. The servants at Yǎyuán were all Betas and normally wouldn’t spray it so heavily.
Perhaps it was because they had entertained guests last night that they needed to clear the air.
Speaking of which, how did Mr. Qin and Brother Wen Yue leave last night? And how did he get back to his room… Why couldn’t he remember anything?
Bai Yan frowned and put his spoon back in the porcelain bowl, trying hard to focus on his memory, but it was a complete blank.
His mind felt as if it were shrouded in a fog, and he couldn’t connect his thoughts at all. He only remembered that they had just sat down for dinner last night, and then he couldn’t remember anything else.
He didn’t even have a clue what they had eaten for dinner.
His mood was a little down. The remaining meat congee suddenly seemed thick and unappetizing.
Ugh, the young man sighed. It’s probably just a side effect of the fever.
If he couldn’t remember, he might as well not think about it. Bai Yan stretched, ruffled Oz’s chubby face, and planned to go upstairs to finish the last chapter.
He didn’t have any experimental equipment, so he would have to wait until school started to continue his research on the later content.
The morning slipped away as he studied. Bai Yan put down his book and turned on his fully charged phone. It was almost eleven o’clock.
The young man stared blankly at the bare-chested male model on his wallpaper.
Today’s rotation featured an Asian model with sharp features, black hair, and black eyes, who was looking at the camera with an indifferent slant. He had a neat eight-pack and a black mole on his collarbone.
His figure and features are very similar…
His fingertips trembled violently, and the phone fell with a soft thud onto the carpet. When he picked it up, he accidentally tapped on an ad, and the screen jumped to WeChat.
The starry sky profile picture lay quietly at the top of the chat list, the conversation still at the very beginning.
[Hello, Mr. Pei. I’m Bai Yan.]
[Mm.]
Bai Yan sighed, put down his phone, and slumped back onto the table.
Mr. Pei must be busy right now.
Ugh, I wonder if I embarrassed him last night.
His soft cheek was pressed against his arm, his two eyelashes fluttering like little fans. His fingertips unconsciously fiddled with a few rose petals.
A faint floral scent tickled his nose. The climbing roses he had picked from the small garden—a small portion had been dissected for research, and the rest were in a vase.
The buds were already large and would bloom in a few days.
I wonder how the ones I gave to Mr. Pei are doing?
By the time Mr. Pei comes back… the flowers will probably be gone.
Bai Yan felt a sense of emptiness in his heart. He buried his face in his arms, his eyelashes drooping, even his jasmine pheromones feeling listless.
Oz, on the carpet, keenly noticed his state. He stood up on all fours, wriggled under the young man’s arm, and licked his soft cheek.
“Woof woof!”
“Aiyo, Oz, stop it.”
His face tickled. The young man hugged the Doberman to stop it, his eyes crinkling with a smile.
With this interruption, the inexplicable melancholy in his heart finally disappeared completely.
Bai Yan ruffled Oz’s soft ears and asked cheerfully, “Do you want to play with the ball? We can’t go outside, so how about we go to the indoor sports court on the first floor?”
“Woof woof!” Oz wagged his tail and answered excitedly.
Now when Mr. Pei comes back, he won’t be able to say I lack exercise!
After another two days at Yǎyuán, Auntie Chen finally relented and told him he could go out.
In the past, even when he was sick, he had never stayed in his room all day like this. After all, he had been busy with part-time jobs to save money.
These past few days, he had been cooped up in the house and was about to grow mold. He was actually not used to being idle.
So when Lin Yu asked him to go shopping, Bai Yan agreed without a second thought.
When he reached the intersection, the Beta boy waved at him from afar. When Bai Yan got closer, Lin Yu immediately stuffed a steaming cup of oden into his hand.
Bai Yan was pleasantly surprised, his eyes shining. He picked up a meatball and put it in his mouth, chewing happily. “How did you know I’ve been craving this for so long!”
He had been sick recently, and Auntie Chen had had the kitchen make various nutritious meals for him for several days. Although they still tasted good, eating them every day was starting to get to Bai Yan.
“I don’t know you, but I know about those upper-class society things. They must have rules about what you can and can’t eat, only allowing you to eat green foods every day. So high-maintenance.”
Bai Yan gave a sheepish smile, too embarrassed to mention that he had been sick again.
Lin Yu raised his eyebrows proudly, his face clearly pleased. “I got paid. We’re going to have fun today, my treat. By the way, you don’t have to go to your part-time job tomorrow, right?”
“No,” Bai Yan said with an equally brilliant smile. “Our milk tea shop’s vacation has been extended to next month…”
Hearing the reason, Lin Yu sighed with emotion. “Rich people are so willful.”
“We’re here, we’re here. Let’s go.” The red light turned green. He didn’t think any more about it and, linking arms with his Omega friend, walked toward the shopping mall across the street.
Lin Yu had asked Bai Yan out this time to buy a birthday gift for a senior. This senior was from his department and had helped him a lot.
The senior came from a good family and had a wide range of interests, including nature, hiking, and camping. Lin Yu was a little unsure of what to get her and had specifically asked Bai Yan for advice.
The two of them wandered around the mall. This mall was located in the city center, and the prices were shockingly high. Lin Yu saw several suitable gifts but was deterred by the high prices.
In the end, he chose a hummingbird brooch. Although the price was also relatively high, it was still within his budget.
The Beta went to the cashier to pay, his heart aching. A fox keychain on display at the front desk caught his attention.
He glanced at it a few times and casually asked about the price.
The sales associate smiled and stated a number. Keenly sensing the clear look of deterrence on his face, she added softly that this keychain was a member benefit, and there was a discount for joining the membership.
Thinking of a certain someone’s face, Lin Yu’s lips twitched. He estimated the price in his head and reluctantly said, “Okay.”
When Lin Yu came out with two paper bags, he saw Bai Yan, who had come out first, staring intently at the store opposite them.
Lin Yu followed his gaze and saw a newly opened coffee shop. Two 1.8-meter-tall male models stood at the entrance.
They had fluffy ears on their heads, wore custom-made suits, and greeted passersby with brilliant smiles. They also had mechanical tails wagging behind them.
Lin Yu raised an eyebrow in surprise, his tone teasing. “Yanyan, I didn’t expect you to have a change of heart so quickly.”
“As expected, younger is better?”
“A-Yu, what are you talking about!” Bai Yan’s face turned beet red as he pulled on his friend’s arm, his jade-white earlobes so red they looked like they were bleeding. “I was looking at the suits they were wearing!”
The black tailcoats were form-fitting, clinging to the male models’ tall, strong figures, outlining their firm, smooth waistlines. Their long legs were long and straight.
The promotional effect was clearly very good. Even passersby would cast curious glances at the store.
Sensing their gazes, the gray-haired male model with gold-rimmed glasses smiled, bowed, and blew two kisses across the street.
Lin Yu’s face suddenly turned red, and he looked away.
But Bai Yan, having been desensitized by the male models on his phone wallpaper, was successfully immune. He stared at his silver suit vest and thought single-mindedly, Mr. Pei also seems to have a good eye for suits.
He had heard Auntie Chen mention before that there was a walk-in closet on the second floor specifically for Mr. Pei’s custom suits.
In all the days he had been at Yǎyuán, he had never seen Mr. Pei wear the same suit twice.
Bai Yan pressed his lips together uncomfortably and said in a small voice, “Mr. Pei has done so much for Huixin. I was thinking of getting him a gift…”
“A-Yu, can you come with me to that suit shop we saw before?”
Lin Yu was speechless.
The Beta’s face was full of black lines. Is he helping Huixin or you, Yanyan? How can you not be clear?
Fine, I shouldn’t have asked.
Erya Private Hospital, Glandular Department
The sleek, white building was nestled among lush green plants. This place received Alpha and Omega emergencies year-round, and the concentration of scent-blocker was higher than anywhere else.
The door to the innermost VIP emergency room was tightly closed, and the bright red “In Use” warning light above it was stark and glaring.
The Alpha on the examination table was pale, his breathing ragged, his sharp features showing a hint of sickness.
The front of his shirt was half-open, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows. His arm muscles were firm, the bulging green veins clearly visible, and there were several needle marks on it.
As another shot of green medicine was pushed into his veins, the monitoring instrument beeped. The numbers on it, after a cycle of rising and falling sharply, finally returned to normal.
Li Xiaoxiao breathed a sigh of relief, wiped the fine sweat from her forehead, and removed the measuring needle.
“Mr. Pei is lucky. This sudden pheromone disorder has been brought under control. But during your rut, you absolutely cannot continue to use suppressants.”
She didn’t forget to quip, “Otherwise, not even the gods could save you.”
“Thank you,” Pei Tingyu said coolly, buttoning up his shirt nonchalantly, not even frowning.
If it weren’t for the still-bulging veins on his neck, who would have known he had just escaped a crisis?
Song Jian’s face was full of worry. This was the third day of Mr. Pei’s rut.
In just three days, his boss had already used dozens of suppressants, almost more than all the previous times combined!
But he still had no intention of returning to Yǎyuán. He had been staying in a residence near the company recently.
Last night, he had worked late at the company, which was why he had a sudden pheromone disorder during the morning meeting and was rushed to the emergency room.
If this continued, how could Mr. Pei’s body take it?
Li Xiaoxiao exchanged a look with the elite assistant and sighed. “Why are you doing this to yourself? Didn’t you marry your dear boy? Your compatibility is so high. When you’re in rut, he’ll be uncomfortable too.”
“Since you’re both uncomfortable, why not mark him?”
As the head of the glandular department at a private hospital, she usually dealt with young couples who had overindulged during their heats.
It made her have to earnestly remind them every time that Omegas were physically weak, and even during special periods, they shouldn’t exceed their physical limits.
A celibate Alpha like Mr. Pei was truly rare, unless…
A flash of inspiration struck Li Xiaoxiao. Her expression froze. No wonder she had never heard any rumors about Mr. Pei. Could it be…
He really had a certain hidden ailment?
Her prying gaze suddenly became strange.
Pei Tingyu finished tidying his clothes and, sensing her unusual gaze, glanced at her impatiently.
Li Xiaoxiao hadn’t completely abandoned her medical ethics. She quickly reminded him, “Mr. Pei, remember not to be stimulated recently. Otherwise, emotional fluctuations could still trigger a pheromone disorder.”
Pei Tingyu grunted coolly and turned to leave.
After the Alpha’s tall figure disappeared from the emergency room, Li Xiaoxiao shook her head and sighed as she packed up her instruments.
What a pity for such a cute little thing. How did he end up marrying this useless Alpha?
