Chapter 105 Part 1
[Doctor Wu is back! Even though it’s just a live stream, seeing him is reassuring.]
[?? Why are those ghosts so docile now? Afraid of Doctor Wu?]
[I doubt it. Those ghosts were vicious earlier. Is there another ghost beside him? A blurry shadow…]
Shi Xuan’s gaze was cold, his power palpable, no need for action, his presence alone enough to command obedience.
‘Those who participated in this rebellion will serve a hundred years on the Blazing Ghost Mountain. Those who harmed the living, their sentences compounded according to underworld law. And for those who continue to resist…’ his voice was chillingly calm, ‘Obliteration.’
The ghost generals behind him bowed. ‘Yes, Your Majesty.’
Hundreds of millions watched Chengde Medical Clinic’s live stream, even official media outlets broadcasting it, the decree from their new King of Hell, spreading through the ghost internet, reaching every corner of their world.
The malicious ghosts were stunned. This wasn’t the plan, wasn’t Yama dead, a new king needed? They were on the wrong side!
One, having just snatched a paper weapon from an old man, whose family huddled in a corner, he the only protector, a ghostly shield,
Seeing their only weapon taken, he shouted angrily, ‘You beasts! If you want to harm my family, devour me first!’
The ghost, glancing at the live stream on the TV, swallowed nervously, then lunged towards them, a dramatic sliding kneel before the old man, raising the paper weapon with both hands, its face filled with a forced smile,
‘You misunderstand, old man, I’m a good ghost, I was just testing your defenses. Very impressive, very strong. Here’s your weapon back.’
The old ghost: ‘…’
Really? Didn’t believe it, a ghost clinging to someone’s window, watching the underworld news, Yama’s decree, felt its world crumbling, seeing the terrified family inside staring at it. It chuckled nervously and started wiping the window mechanically. ‘New… New Year’s cleaning… just… helping out, free service, no other intentions, really…’
Seeing their continued suspicion, it quickly wrote the character “福” (fortune, blessing) on the window with its bloody finger, forcing a grin. ‘A lucky ghost, bringing blessings, Happy New Year.’
The family watched silently as blood dripped down from the character, a macabre festive greeting.
A ghost emerging from a toilet drain, encountering a terrified woman screaming, quickly glanced at the live stream, its face contorted in an embarrassed smile. ‘Don’t worry, just unclogging your drain. Seems a bit blocked,’ as it demonstrated, how considerate!
Ghosts everywhere, having learned their lesson after Yama’s decree, now acting like model citizens, their earlier arrogance gone, in just a matter of minutes, they had all surrendered.
Wu Heng looked at the person beside him, filled with admiration, his decision to send Shi Xuan back early, the right move.
A peaceful resolution, minimal casualties, the best outcome.
[The ghosts in my neighborhood ran away.]
[The ghost in my house is cleaning my floor, crying. It was trying to kill us moments ago!]
[Breaking news, they’re watching Chengde Medical Clinic’s live stream! They said it was Yama’s new decree! So, that shadowy figure beside Doctor Wu…!]
[Holy shit, I saw Yama himself! This New Year’s story will be with me for life.]
[Your Majesty, we bow before you! Doctor Wu, amazing, even bringing Yama here.]
Shi Zongguang, watching, his jaw dropping, staring at the comments in disbelief.
Yama…
His son, Shi Xuan, how could he be Yama?
Not the cursed child, bringing chaos and destruction, as predicted, but Yama, the one who commanded all ghosts?!
He dropped his phone, his breath coming in ragged gasps. If Shi Xuan was Yama… what had he done these past eighteen years, suppressing his growth, hindering him.
Could he be the reason for this supernatural resurgence?
If he hadn’t restricted him, or not taken that steward’s son’s choker, perhaps Shi Xuan would have become Yama much earlier!
He had thought his actions were for the greater good, preventing his son from becoming a monster, yet… could it be… he was the monster, the true villain?!
His world shattered, his blood boiling, he vomited a mouthful of blood and collapsed to the floor, unconscious.
The nearby officers were startled, this citizen, priorities, call an ambulance, then the police.
Wu Heng watched as Shi Xuan waved his sleeve, the lingering Yin qi in the room disappearing, and the still-dark sky, a few stars faintly visible now.
Countless ghost guards, summoned from below, effortlessly captured the wailing ghosts without the help of the practitioners and officers, decades of labor for the underworld, right there.
‘Thank you, Your Majesty. We feel reassured by your decree. It’s getting late now, we have to go back,‘ a ghostly couple said, looking at their children with longing.
New Year’s Eve wasn’t the same as the Hungry Ghost Festival, they had to leave after the reunion dinner, the gates closing at midnight.
Their daughter rushed over, pulling at their clothes, “Mom, Dad, don’t leave! It’s not the Year of the Snake yet! We haven’t even celebrated together!”
The couple exchanged glances, being able to return, seeing their children, already a blessing, how could they ask for more?
Then, on the TV, a grayscale live stream, the young King of Hell, wearing his twelve-beaded crown, a new decree: ‘The gates of hell will remain open until the rooster crows.’
The spirits rejoiced. Until the rooster crowed?
That signified dawn, about 5 a.m. here.
A few more precious hours…
“We haven’t even had our reunion dinner! Mom, Dad, stay!”
A lively little girl turned on the lights, and the room was filled with warmth, her younger brother excitedly jumping up and down, asking them to turn on the TV, they hadn’t watched TV all day, and their mother, tying on her apron, smiling at her husband, his eyes red-rimmed, “The supermarket must be open, go buy some more groceries. I’ll start cooking.”
“Okay!” He quickly grabbed his jacket and mask, not caring about the time or the darkness outside, and as the grandparents, also spirits, helped entertain the children, peeling oranges and offering candies, even helping in the kitchen, the air filled with the aroma of cooking, lights flickered on in every house, families enjoying their reunion dinners, dumplings, laughter filling their living rooms, the Spring Festival Gala playing on TV, young people playing games, winning stacks of underworld currency,
And Shi Xuan, taking Wu Heng’s hand, “Let’s go home, time for our New Year’s Eve dinner.”
Wu Heng, his heart pounding as he turned to the camera, “Happy New Year’s Eve, everyone, ending the stream now, off to enjoy my reunion dinner.”
As he ended the stream, about to leave with Shi Xuan, “I have to pick up my grandfather first.”
Wu Tai must be busy, but a reunion dinner should be possible,
Shi Xuan grabbed his hand, no wells this time, a direct path through the underworld, ‘No need, I’ve sent some ghost guards.’
They emerged in Nan Nuo, the night sky lit up by fireworks.
Shi Xuan, having changed into casual clothes, walked beside him under the shower of sparks.
He looked ahead at the stone path, a cool breeze against his face, “Wu Heng, I have something to tell you…”
Wu Heng’s heart pounded, and just as he was about to speak, the sound of firecrackers exploding, the red paper raining down.
“Happy New Year’s Eve! Welcome home, my two sons!” Wu Su, holding a string of firecrackers, rushed out.
Wu Heng: “…”
He stared at his father, speechless, “Dad, didn’t you make dinner?”
Wu Su said, “Of course I did! Ready-made meals! Just heat and eat!”
Wu Heng and Shi Xuan: “…”
Wu Su chuckled, “Just kidding! So many people cooking, they didn’t want me messing things up, so they sent me to get you two.”
He pulled them along, one on each side, “Let’s go home! New Year!”
The kitchen in Chengde Medical Clinic was indeed large. He Yunxiao and Li Hao’s parents were all busy cooking, young people helping, the air filled with delicious aromas.
Their deceased family members had also arrived to collect their offerings, now chatting and catching up, some even exploring the village.
“Wu Heng and Shi Xuan are back!”
Instantly, the clinic buzzed with activity.
Wu Heng and Shi Xuan exchanged a glance. Shi Xuan rolled up Wu Heng’s sleeves, revealing his slender arms, and they joined the others in the kitchen, dishes being carried to the tables, Wu Su pouring homemade wine for the ghostly guests.
Ghosts ate differently, absorbing the essence, and tonight, no one minded sharing a table with the spirits, family.
Several tables were set up, Wu Heng and Shi Xuan relegated to the kids’ table.
A knock on the door. A refined-looking elderly man, his face etched with wisdom and kindness, stood at the entrance, smiling faintly.
You Jin dropped his chopsticks and exclaimed, “Master, you’re back!”
Wu Heng and Shi Xuan stood up. Wu Heng hurried to greet him, “Grandpa, we’ve been waiting for you.”
Wu Tai, his face showing signs of travel, after using the clinic’s disinfectant spray, ruffled Wu Heng’s hair, tears welling up in his wrinkled eyes, “Our Xiao Heng is all grown up now, welcome home,” then turning to Shi Xuan, “Xiao Shi, right? Thanks for sending someone to pick me up.”
Shi Xuan, dismissing the ghost guards with a wave, his eyes smiling, “Hello, Grandpa. Just call me Shi Xuan, no need for thanks, we’re family now.”
Wu Tai smiled knowingly, looking at the two of them, he sat down at the table without another word, “Did I make it in time? Aaa!” Da Bai, the little white snake, slithered in, having checked with the other Well Dragon Kings and rushed back, seeing everyone seated, “Big Brother Da Bai! Over here!” Xi Xi waved from the kids table,
Da Bai slithered over, ready to cry and tell her about its journey, its hardships, how those evil spirits were so stubborn and wouldn’t let anyone into or out of their territories, there was even one that tried to bite him on his butt! It had stared the ghost down.
Looking at the voluptuous woman sitting at the table, “Who are you?” Not Wu Heng’s girlfriend, right?
Su Da Yi, her eyes glued to the chicken dishes, looked at Da Bai with disdain, “You went on one trip and became blind? Don’t you recognize your Granny Fox?”
Da Bai took a step back, stunned. That fluffy fox spirit?
Su Da Yi’s face fell, “Little snake, be careful or Granny Fox will eat you for dinner!” she snarled.
Knowing it was just a joke, the two snakes weren’t afraid, retribution would be swift, she wouldn’t be able to eat tonight.
He Yunxiao came over and poured them some juice. “Da Bai, soda or soy milk?”
Da Bai, surprised and pleased by his friendly tone, immediately replied, “Uncle He, I’ll have what Xi Xi’s having.”
He Yunxiao smiled, pouring two glasses of soy milk.
Da Bai, its heart soaring, Uncle He had finally asked!
Then, turning to Su Da Yi, who said haughtily, “Wine, or white wine is also acceptable.”
She didn’t wait for him to pour it, going to the cabinet herself, wondering if wine would make her fat, hate these feasts, but with her stunning looks, He Yunxiao and his friends, staring at her.
“Eat whatever you want,” Wu Heng said gently, and she turned to him, bewildered, wasn’t it supposed to be no carbs and plenty of exercise?
Wu Heng, looking for a drink, so many different kinds, said casually, “If you recognize your beauty in any form, you won’t gain weight just by looking at water. This is your trial.”
Su Da Yi’s eyes widened, “Really?”
Not waiting for his reply, glass of red wine in hand, she rushed to the table and started eating, Da Bai, amazed that Xi Xi had no more demonic energy, her transformation complete, the Gu Master gone from her, watched as the fox stuffed its face while maintaining a delicate appearance,
Xi Xi was no longer a monster but a true spirit, the He family’s guardian deity.
“Xi Xi, quick, eat,” Da Bai urged, and she quickly joined in.
They could also transform into humans, but Da Bai couldn’t use chopsticks very well. Its snake form was better, no manners required, unlike the vain fox.
What a happy family meal. I think it’s funny the king of hell sits at the kids table, though.
Thanks for the hard work!
