Chapter 7

The result of staying up late to climb ranks was being dog-tired for the 8 AM class the next day. Half-dead, Lin Linya slumped over his desk. He rummaged through his desk for ages before pulling out a textbook for his major, but couldn’t find a pen.

No pen meant no note-taking. He poked the sleeping man beside him. “Bro Chun, wake up. Got a pen? Lend me one, I need to copy notes.”

A sleepy but handsome face lifted from its folded arms. Chen Chun had been up all night gaming. Morning found him so exhausted he was practically nodding off. He clicked his tongue impatiently, “What the hell is wrong with you— Yaya?”

The man straightened up, reached into his bag to rummage around, yawned lazily, then smacked his forehead in frustration a moment later. “Damn, I forgot my pen too.”

“Don’t worry, Bro will borrow one from someone else for you.”

Saying this, he turned around and grinned at the girl sitting behind them. “Hey, classmate, lend us a black pen?”

The girl, who had specifically chosen a seat behind the two of them, instantly blushed. Flustered, she fished a pen out of her bag and placed it in Chen Chun’s hand.

“Thanks,” Chen Chun smiled at the girl. “Are you in our class too? I don’t really know the girls in our major. Want to exchange WeChat contacts?”

The girl also showed a shy expression, but her words hit the nail on the head. “You don’t come to class often, do you.”

“…” Chen Chun stiffened, trying to salvage the situation. “Been too busy this semester, so I’ve had to skip a lot of classes.”

Lin Linya was long used to this. Without a second glance, he took the pen. He still hadn’t finished copying the PPT slides he’d photographed last class.

Chen Chun was his roommate. Lin Linya had spent a few days living in the school dorms freshman year, and Chen Chun was the one he got along with best. A straight-as-an-arrow, ironclad straight man.

During freshman military training, many Senior Sisters had offered him water, snacks, and asked for his contact info, yet somehow, he still hadn’t managed to land a single girlfriend.

As girls put it, Chen Chun had a face that looked like it would cheat someone to death. His features were tough and ruggedly handsome—a buzz cut, a scar cutting through one eyebrow, thin lips. His smile looked roguish, like he knew how to have a good time.

Chen Chun got the girl’s WeChat, exchanged a few words, and turned back around to see Lin Linya slumped over the desk, diligently and studiously copying notes into his textbook.

That handwriting… it was hard to say if it was good or bad. Each stroke was drawn carefully, like an elementary school student’s. Yet, he was writing with extreme seriousness.

Instantly, “…”

He rubbed his own brow bone, feeling like he’d suddenly transformed from a dashing young male college student into a worrying old mother hen. He tugged the back of Lin Linya’s collar. “Stop writing. Leaning in so close is bad for your eyes.”

Lin Linya was annoyed by him. “Can’t. I’ll stop once I finish copying this section.”

When the little Young Master finally finished his notes, Chen Chun was fully awake. Remembering his purpose for coming to class today, he propped his head on one hand. “Yaya Baby, let me discuss something with you, okay?”

Lin Linya returned the pen to the girl behind him, looking puzzled. “What is it?”

“Tomorrow’s club recruitment. The Music Club at our school—their guitarist has a cold and fever, can’t make the recruitment performance. Can you fill in?”

Lin Linya was even more confused. “Didn’t you say all clubs are a waste of time and didn’t join any?”

“Ahem, ahem,” Chen Chun faked a few coughs. He took out his phone and showed him a photo. “A Junior Schoolmate from the Music Club. Exceptionally beautiful. An art student. Not only plays the piano brilliantly, but can also really hold her liquor.”

The girl in the photo was fair-skinned, slender, and had an excellent temperament. She wore a high ponytail, and her smile in the group photo with friends was shy.

Afraid Lin Linya would be fooled by her appearance, Chen Chun made a specific gesture. “She drank eight glasses by herself, mixing white liquor, red wine, and beer. At a gathering a few nights ago, she drank four guys under the table single-handedly.”

Lin Linya, who drank Wangzai milk at parties, immediately felt deep respect. “So hardcore.”

Chen Chun was going all out this time, determined to win over this unconventional beauty. “Please, Yaya. Help me out, and I’ll buy you that mechanical keyboard in your shopping cart. Deal?”

Lin Linya, however, said with simple honesty, “Bro, she’s so outstanding. I don’t think you’re good enough for her.”

Chen Chun: “…”

He was so angry his brain felt like it was buzzing. But facing Lin Linya’s obediently pretty face, he forcefully swallowed a bellyful of curses. “What do you mean? Your bro is this handsome, how could I not be good enough?”

Lin Linya furrowed his brow slightly. “Bro, do you have any other good qualities besides being handsome?”

Terrified of what other hurtful words might come out of that little mouth, Chen Chun didn’t dwell on the subject. “Just consider it helping a pretty girl out, okay? She said if this works out, she’s buying milk tea.”

“Alright, alright, just shut up.”

Lin Linya didn’t believe that a huge university like S couldn’t find a second guitarist. But the class bell had already rung, the professor had started lecturing, and Chen Chun’s constant chatter was making it impossible to listen. So he impatiently agreed.

As expected, after he agreed, Chen Chun ignored him, happily turning away to chat with the Little Junior Schoolmate.

The next day, when Lin Linya arrived at the scene with his guitar on his back, he saw the Junior Schoolmate Chen Chun had a crush on. Her name was Fang Wenxue. Sure enough, someone who could attract a handsome guy like Chen Chun was no ordinary person—not only pure and pretty, but also lively in personality.

“The guitarist got sick. We spent ages looking for a suitable replacement,” Fang Wenxue stuck out her tongue. “Here’s the sheet music. Get familiar with it first, we’ll be going on soon.”

The band had four members originally: a Lead Singer and backup guitarist, a Bassist, Fang Wenxue on keyboard, and a girl on drums. Adding Lin Linya made five.

Lin Linya obediently nodded. Hugging his guitar, he found a corner and familiarized himself with the sheet music alone, not noticing Fang Wenxue’s frequent, sneaky glances his way.

On the surface, Fang Wenxue calmly chatted with the other band members. Inside, she was screaming madly.

She was seeing a real-life Yaya! Her favorite streamer was actually her Senior Brother! What were the odds!

He didn’t even use any beauty filters during his streams! His skin was so pale, his face so small. He was slim and tall. His smile was so sweet and well-behaved. Too cute! How could he have such natural double eyelids?

It was just that there was a fly buzzing annoyingly nearby. So irritating.

“Junior Schoolmate, want some milk tea? I’ll go buy some. Junior Schoolmate, your band is so famous, there’s already a huge crowd waiting before you even start. Junior Schoolmate…”

Fang Wenxue gave a few fake smiles. “Hehe, be quiet.”

Chen Chun abruptly shut his mouth. He looked at the Junior Schoolmate—who had been chatting enthusiastically with him just yesterday, her smile so well-behaved—with disbelief and a hurt expression.

Club recruitment day was the liveliest time at Stadium 1. A Hundred Regiments Clash, every club using all their tricks to attract new Juniors. The most eye-catching of them all was the Music Club.

They opened with “Blue Bird,” instantly setting the whole place on fire, drawing countless old-school otaku to the front, waving their glowsticks and cheering wildly.

Lu Qingyuan was also dragged along by his roommate to join the fun. Hearing this BGM, the roommate felt his otaku DNA activate immediately. He found a seat near the stage. “Bro Lu, look at that Senior Sister playing the keyboard. So pretty.”

Lu Qingyuan didn’t quite get these otaku hobbies, and the noise around him was annoying. He stood with his arms crossed, initially quite impatient. But when he looked up, his gaze stuck to the guitarist and couldn’t move away.

Lin Linya’s aura was too different from the others. Though he was at the very back, observant eyes spotted him instantly. Like a beautiful youth straight out of a 2D world, he was on a completely different artistic level.

The other four were already hyped to the max. The Lead Singer’s guitar strings looked ready to spark, yet Lin Linya still sat there quietly playing, perfectly keeping up with the melody.

The oversized hoodie made him look especially small, not at all like a Senior Brother. The lights shone on his gorgeous face, making him squint his eyes briefly—just a tiny motion, but extra cute.

His roommate tugged his arm. “Bro Lu, why aren’t you saying anything?”

Lu Qingyuan lazily spoke, “Pretty? I think she’s just average. The guitarist next to her is prettier.”

“Whoa, that’s a guy,” his roommate said, hearing this. He squinted, carefully observing the guitarist sitting in the very back. After a moment, he was dumbstruck. “Seems true… kinda prettier.”

“But…” his roommate’s brow furrowed into a mess, his sexual orientation under immense challenge, “But no matter how pretty, he’s still a guy.”

A guy was perfect, as Lu Qingyuan happened to be gay.

The girls sitting nearby had long since had enough. What kind of lowlife men went around judging others like that? They rolled their eyes impatiently, about to turn around and see which prehistoric pit these troglodytes crawled out of.

But they found two very handsome Little Junior Schoolmates, especially one of them.

She silently took out her phone, snapped a stealthy photo, and sent it to her dorm group chat. [What high-quality Junior Schoolmates are these? Too bad both of them have already fallen for Senior Brother Yaya’s sweatpants. Pity all the handsome guys at S University turn out to be gay.]

[Yaya? Where’s Yaya? My Yaya, hehe.]

[I heard Yaya would be at club recruitment today. Why do I have class, why am I not there?! I’m so mad. When I get out of class, I’ll come out and kill you all.]

After “Blue Bird” finished, they switched to a more lyrical song, “South of South Mountain.” The Lead Singer’s voice was completely wrecked. Lin Linya took over the vocals. When he moved to the very front, some people in the front row gasped audibly.

New students who had just started school were frantically asking who this handsome guy was.

One Junior Schoolmate recorded this performance and posted it as a short video on platforms like SoundWave. She never expected it to go viral so unexpectedly. Within less than a day, it racked up hundreds of thousands of likes.

Although this wasn’t exactly appropriate, because of the traffic, the girl couldn’t bear to delete it and even posted more performance videos.

During his livestream that night, Lin Linya was surprised to see his viewer count suddenly spike. Normally, he only had a few thousand online. Less than half an hour into his stream, over ten thousand people had flooded in.

[SoundWave tourist group here to check in. Your wife is so pretty. Mine in a sec.]

[Yaya, are you really an S University student? Can’t believe it, wuwuwu. My little dummy streamer is actually from a prestigious university. I can’t accept this.]

[Playing and singing so beautifully is one thing, but who knew gaming could also be so… something.]

He froze completely in front of the screen, watching his alt accounts be exposed layer by layer. “What’s going on? What SoundWave? I don’t use SoundWave.”

[Wuwu, so dazed and clueless, too cute and obedient. Want to tease.]

[Baby, go check it out! Someone recorded you without permission, you’ve gone viral!]
