The plaid-shirt guy raised an eyebrow. “Your brother’s charm is unquestionable. The confessions he gets daily could rival the whole department.”
“Oh!” Zhou Chiyu eyed Gu Yuan closely, then grinned mischievously. “Brother, have you met anyone you like?”
Gu Yuan poured him a cup of hot tea and gently fed it to him. Zhou Chiyu cooperated by sipping it bit by bit, but his eyes still sparkled with curiosity.
The two stared at each other for a long while—
“I haven’t, because… I like cute ones.” Gu Yuan set the cup down, refilled it with hot tea, and took a sip himself. “Lively and cute ones.”
Zhou Chiyu’s mind was entirely on Gu Yuan’s ideal type; he completely missed Gu Yuan’s little gesture. But the girl sitting across from Gu Yuan flashed a hint of surprise in her eyes.
“Gu Yuan, do you know how the school first gossiped about you and your brother?” The plaid-shirt guy dangled the bait. “They said he was your fiancée, haha.”
“Yeah, no idea who started it.”
“I even thought you two were really a couple.”
At the table, everyone discussed animatedly. Zhou Chiyu seemed to suddenly realize something and eyed Gu Yuan suspiciously.
The originator of this rumor was probably Gu Yuan himself, right?
“Let’s grill the meat.” Gu Yuan ignored the topic and handed Zhou Chiyu a tong. “Put whatever you want on it.”
Zhou Chiyu hesitated to take it. His bright black pupils held a sneaky probe, like a kitten plotting mischief as it sized up its owner.
“What’s wrong?” Gu Yuan asked.
“Aren’t you going to grill for me?” Zhou Chiyu propped his cheek, eyes scrutinizing. “I’m afraid it’ll be hot.”
Gu Yuan paused, about to speak, but Zhou Chiyu cut him off.
“Or do you have other things to do?”
Gu Yuan slowly set down the tongs. He felt Zhou Chiyu was acting strange today.
The restaurant’s specialty was personal grills. Seeing Zhou Chiyu munching Potato Chips from hunger, Gu Yuan wanted both their grills working so Zhou Chiyu could eat meat sooner.
“Little Fish, leave it to me.” Gu Yuan planned to ask about it at home. He reached for Zhou Chiyu’s barbecue tongs, but Zhou Chiyu dodged.
“I’ll do it myself.” Zhou Chiyu’s voice was soft, tinged with quiet disappointment. “I need to practice.”
“Hm? Why practice?” Gu Yuan pressed.
“Because Brother won’t grill for me anymore in the future.” The words were so quiet only Zhou Chiyu heard them, unclear if it was reluctance or disappointment.
“Little Fish.” Gu Yuan frowned with a smile and ruffled Zhou Chiyu’s hair. “What’s going on with you today?”
“Nothing.” Zhou Chiyu stared at the meat on the grill, hands propping his face as he spaced out slightly. “Just hungry.”
He didn’t even know what was wrong with him.
He just felt unhappy.
Maybe because of his roommates’ words?
Or seeing a girl hand Gu Yuan water?
He felt like Gu Yuan was about to be snatched away.
But he knew clearly that once Gu Yuan married, he’d prioritize his family, spending less time with him.
But if they lived together…
Zhou Chiyu decided that once Gu Yuan started a family, he’d live next door and mooch meals from Gu Yuan every day.
…
Back home, Gu Lao shared news with them: tomorrow night, his friend was hosting a banquet at home and invited everyone.
Apparently, Old Master He’s grandson had just gotten engaged, and Old Master He was thrilled to show off his grandson’s fiancée to his friends.
At the bedroom door, Zhou Chiyu noticed Senior Brother Gu Yuan following him without speaking, just silently accompanying.
He turned. “Brother? Something up?”
Gu Yuan looked at him quietly. “Did you have something on your mind today?”
“No.” Zhou Chiyu thought of the Blind Box doll Gu Yuan gave him and felt his schoolbag behind his back. “I heard you got confessed to?”
“Yeah.” Gu Yuan hesitated. “Which time do you mean?”
Zhou Chiyu bristled, feeling like Gu Yuan was showing off.
“The time you accepted her gift.” Zhou Chiyu stared sourly. “Didn’t you say you don’t like anyone? If not, why accept the gift? Unless you don’t want outsiders to know?”
After the barrage of questions, Zhou Chiyu’s thoughts cleared. “If you like a girl, you should’ve told me about something this big. So not bro-code.”
“The gift?” Gu Yuan realized what Zhou Chiyu meant and looked at him leisurely. “You know about it?”
“Yeah, I’m about to have a sister-in-law, and I wouldn’t know?” Zhou Chiyu didn’t know where the nameless fire in his chest came from. He started venting at Gu Yuan. “Once you’re dating, how many times a month will you come back from the USA? But I bet it’s to see her, right? Or will you see her once for every time you see me?”
Gu Yuan’s light brown pupils reflected Zhou Chiyu’s angry face.
Zhou Chiyu resembled a kitten with its tail stepped on, eyes misty with a layer of damp fog. “Next time we BBQ together, will you still grill for me? You probably won’t even leave me scraps!”
Gu Yuan stared at Zhou Chiyu’s flushed ear tips. His cool expression suddenly softened, lips curving faintly.
“Yeah, that’s right.”
“That’s right?” Zhou Chiyu got angrier, biting his lip, unsure how to continue rebuking Gu Yuan.
“Dating?”
“I do want to pretty badly.”
Gu Yuan’s aloof aura suddenly gained a spark of liveliness.
“But I remember someone who played house as a kid and always wanted to be my wife—”
His voice was low and pleasant, laced with playfulness and teasing. “Could it be Little Fish Baby forgot?”
