Yu Sui froze for a moment when he heard those words.
What a twisted angle. It was completely turning things upside down.
“That wasn’t me taking a shower either,” he stressed.
But Ye Mingxu saw it all as excuses. After all, Yu Sui had shown no guard at all in front of a stranger—and those were his underclothes.
Yu Sui had never even worn Ye Mingxu’s clothes.
Jealousy burned fiercely in Ye Mingxu’s heart, but he didn’t go overboard. He could sense they hadn’t gone all the way.
Still, Yu Sui lay on the bed looking utterly pitiful, tears streaming down his face. His suit was still on, just a bit disheveled.
The contrast was enough to make one’s scalp tingle.
Ye Mingxu’s throat bobbed. Without waiting for his husband to react, he leaned down and kissed his waist.
It was still lifeless down there, but Ye Mingxu stubbornly wanted to bring it back to life.
That was easier said than done.
Yu Sui sucked in a sharp breath. “Ye… Ye Mingxu, you…”
He felt completely floored.
Hearing his husband’s pained cry, Ye Mingxu looked up at his face. “Why are you so repulsed by me? Do you not want anything to do with me anymore?”
“I’m about done for,” Yu Sui gritted out, convinced the man was getting revenge on him.
Ye Mingxu faltered, then glanced down. It did seem that way…
“Is this really just some kind of dysfunction?” But he was still suspicious. “Do you react to Meng Chenxiao like that?”
“Do I have to shove the medical report in your face before you’ll drop it?” Yu Sui snapped, his face twisting as the man poked at his sore spot. “Get out!”
He was completely broken down. Lawyers really were lawyers— a few words and they could make you itch with hatred.
“I’m sorry.” Ye Mingxu realized he’d said the wrong thing and apologized at once. “I was just too anxious.”
Now that he had calmed down, fear started to creep in. How had he fallen for it? Would his husband now despise him? Would he think Meng Chenxiao was the understanding one?
Yu Sui frowned. “Get out.”
Ye Mingxu didn’t budge. “You… you’re not going to divorce me, are you?”
“I haven’t thought about it yet.” Yu Sui gazed at him. “But if you betray me…”
Ye Mingxu pressed his lips together. The one who’d betrayed their marriage was clearly this man—how could he…? But he didn’t dare argue back.
Since Yu Sui didn’t have those plans for now, Ye Mingxu let out a small breath of relief. “I’ll go get the medicine.”
Yu Sui’s face twisted again at those words.
He limped to the bathroom, locked the door on purpose, and took a shower.
When he emerged, his expression was dark.
He felt like he’d been beaten. Damn that Ye Mingxu.
His wife was back to being gentle, offering to apply the medicine for him.
Yu Sui refused. “I… I can do it myself…”
“You changed in front of him, so why can’t I look?” Ye Mingxu turned sensitive again.
Yu Sui gritted his teeth. “You’re being completely unreasonable. I already told you…”
“Yu Sui, then we…” His wife took a step forward, looking so very dangerous.
Yu Sui didn’t dare speak. He squeezed his eyes shut.
It was utterly mortifying. Once the medicine was applied, he yanked the blanket over himself. “You can go now.”
Ye Mingxu gave him two lingering looks before leaving.
But his heart didn’t relax. If anything, his worries deepened.
That Meng Chenxiao had seemed so determined to have him. Had Yu Sui promised him something?
He clenched his fists, his face grave.
Because of his injury, Yu Sui really couldn’t go to work the next day. He messaged his boss to take a sick day.
When Meng Chenxiao saw the message, jealousy twisted his features beyond recognition.
Had his words from yesterday assisted the enemy again? This time, Yu Sui hadn’t even been able to get out of bed.
He flexed his hand and replied, “Get some good rest.”
Seeing Yu Sui hobble around that morning filled Ye Mingxu with immense guilt. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have…”
“Don’t talk.” Yu Sui gave him no good look.
“I’ll stay home with you,” Ye Mingxu offered, worried about his inconvenience.
“I’m not crippled,” Yu Sui shot back, stung again, his expression darkening.
Ye Mingxu opened his mouth, then closed it. “Alright. Call me if you need anything.”
After eating, Yu Sui returned to the bedroom and flopped onto the bed, feeling utterly devoid of the will to live.
“Why do I feel like they’re ganging up on me?”
[You’re way too pitiful.] The System couldn’t bear to look.
Yu Sui was sighing in despair when he heard a knock at the door. He frowned in confusion.
Ding dong—
His phone buzzed.
It was a message from his boss, saying he was coming to visit.
Yu Sui raised a brow. What was this, a fox in the henhouse?
He shuffled slowly to the door and opened it to find Meng Chenxiao with a bag of supplements. “What’s this?”
“Are you hurt?” Meng Chenxiao looked concerned. “Just a friend checking in on you. It’s only right.”
“No need to go to such expense—and don’t you have work?” Yu Sui relented and let him in.
“Not busy.” Meng Chenxiao stepped inside, set the things down, and eyed Yu Sui.
Seeing him in such a sorry state made Meng Chenxiao’s heart ache with a mix of jealousy and envy.
He hadn’t expected Ye Mingxu to be so tolerant. Was this all part of Yu Sui’s scheme?
Meng Chenxiao sat down. Yu Sui moved to pour tea.
“You’re not convenient. Don’t trouble yourself.” Meng Chenxiao stopped him. “What happened between you two yesterday?”
Yu Sui frowned slightly at the question. “Nothing.”
Seeing he didn’t want to say more, Meng Chenxiao didn’t press. “If you’re not feeling well, rest at home a couple more days.”
Yu Sui nodded. “Thanks.”
They had nothing much to talk about, and the awkwardness made Yu Sui uncomfortable. His eyes turned as an idea struck him. “Before Mingxu left, he seemed to be chatting and laughing on the phone with someone. I’m a bit suspicious…”
He looked up at the man. “Could you help me check it out?”
Meng Chenxiao froze. He hadn’t expected Ye Mingxu to be so ruthless, even though Yu Sui loved him so deeply that he couldn’t stay away for a moment.
And now, asking him to keep tabs on his own wife? This behavior was…
Did he really not know what he was doing?
No—maybe he did it on purpose. On purpose to make him jealous, to toy with his emotions.
If that was the case, it was downright cruel.
He clenched his fists. “Sure.”
Seeing his sour expression, Yu Sui thought he was upset on Ye Mingxu’s behalf and couldn’t hold back his own look. He quickly ducked his head. “Go check it out quick.”
Meng Chenxiao stood and left.
Yu Sui watched him go. “I’m so smart.”
[You really are.] The System praised.
Meng Chenxiao drove to the vicinity of the law firm but didn’t go in. Instead, he sat there brooding.
Planning to use him as a tool and then toss him aside?
He’d make Yu Sui learn what it meant for things to backfire.
His mood lightened.
Since the man had used him first, getting revenge was only fair.
Turnabout was fair play.
The injury was in such a vulnerable spot that Yu Sui still couldn’t go to work the next day.
Ye Mingxu was wracked with guilt and kept his behavior in check.
He was back to being the humble, devoted wife from before—but inside, suspicion still lingered.
Ye Mingxu sat at his computer desk, reviewing the surveillance footage.
He discovered that Meng Chenxiao had visited both days after he’d left. The two of them sat in the living room chatting—nothing improper.
But that was enough to put him on alert.
That day, after finishing dinner and setting it on the table, he pretended to leave but slipped into his own room.
He glued his eye to the peephole, timing it.
Sure enough, the doorbell rang.
His husband didn’t seem surprised at all as he went to open the door. “What are you doing back here?”
“How’s the injury?” Meng Chenxiao had brought more supplements.
“It’s getting better.” Yu Sui changed the subject. “Aren’t you busy?”
“It’s fine.” Meng Chenxiao sat on the sofa.
Listening to their intimate chat, Ye Mingxu’s jealousy twisted his face beyond recognition.
An injury like that—and he just casually tells someone else?
Didn’t Yu Sui care about his pride? Why tell Meng Chenxiao?
After sitting a bit, Yu Sui brought up asking for help watching Ye Mingxu again.
Hearing that, Ye Mingxu frowned in confusion. What did it mean?
From their conversation, it was clear this wasn’t the first time Yu Sui had suggested it, but he hadn’t seen Meng Chenxiao the previous two days.
He furrowed his brow.
Meng Chenxiao agreed readily and left without lingering.
That only puzzled Ye Mingxu more.
Yu Sui soon returned to his bedroom to rest.
Ye Mingxu went back to the computer, propping his chin as he pondered the two of them.
It seemed Yu Sui was just asking a friend to keep an eye on his wife, afraid of betrayal.
But Meng Chenxiao hadn’t put it that way in front of him.
Were they acting because they knew he was watching?
If so…
While Yu Sui was asleep, he left the room. He bought groceries after work and came home.
Yu Sui was much better by then and didn’t give him the cold shoulder.
Ye Mingxu cooked as usual. They ate in silence, and he cleared the table.
Yu Sui had slept a lot that day but was still exhausted.
Yawning, he washed up, burrowed under the covers, and fell into a deep sleep.
Ye Mingxu pushed the door open.
He flicked on the light and walked unabashedly to the bedside, then began inspecting.
There were no extra marks anywhere.
Had he overthought it?
But…
Changing into someone else’s clothes was so intimate, and he’d warned him about it—yet Yu Sui hadn’t listened…
And Meng Chenxiao had provoked him.
Ye Mingxu straightened Yu Sui’s clothes and left.
The next day, Yu Sui went to work.
He took a cab, though—still a bit uncomfortable.
Meng Chenxiao already knew, so he skipped the subway.
They didn’t chat idly at work. At lunch, Meng Chenxiao put on a conflicted expression. “There’s something I don’t know if I should tell you.”
“What?” Yu Sui looked up, puzzled.
“Well, I saw Ye Mingxu getting pretty close with someone. They were chatting and laughing…”
Meng Chenxiao watched Yu Sui’s face as he spoke.
Yu Sui froze, his expression darkening. “Where did you see that?”
He was shocked in his heart that Meng Chenxiao would disregard Ye Mingxu’s reputation just to sow discord. “He’s really not a decent guy.”
[He’s coveting his subordinate’s wife—he’s definitely no good.] the System chimed in.
“In the afternoon, I’ll take you to see for yourself,” Meng Chenxiao said.
Yu Sui looked deadly serious and said nothing.
Meng Chenxiao sent a message to his friend.
At that moment, in a coffee shop near the law firm.
Young Master Zhang replied to the message under immense pressure. He looked up at Ye Mingxu across from him. “I have something I need your help with, Lawyer Ye. Do you have time?”
“What’s it about?” Ye Mingxu asked.
“It’s not convenient to talk about here…” Young Master Zhang’s eyes darted away. He felt like the man opposite him could see right through him.
“Is that so?” A glint of coldness flashed in Ye Mingxu’s eyes.
This guy was way too guilty, especially after replying to that message. It seemed Meng Chenxiao couldn’t hold his horses anymore.
“Where are we going?” Perfect—he wanted to see what the other man was up to.
