But the Cyan Wolf’s eyes darted, and it smiled charmingly again: “Of course I can’t do anything to you. One-on-one, you have the Wisdom Sword, and with so many people here, even all together, big sister isn’t a match.”
Then, the Cyan Wolf casually rested its paw on its chin and lay back down: “I’ll just block the door here all day.”
Xiang Xian signaled Xiao Kun repeatedly with his eyes, but Xiao Kun didn’t get it. Xiang Xian asked again, “We can help, but shouldn’t you show some sincerity too?” As he spoke, Xiang Xian rubbed his fingers in a gesture.
“What sincerity do you want?” The Cyan Wolf saw an opening and stared at Xiang Xian.
Xiao Kun suddenly thought of something and asked, “The legends say Cyan Wolf and White Deer are gods of the Dream Realm.”
Xiang Xian also recalled the Dream Realm illusion Mu Qingshan had used in Kunlun Mountain.
“What do you want to know through dreams? Unfortunately,” the Cyan Wolf said, “the White Deer must fully cooperate with me for us to unleash our full power. Sigh.”
The two exchanged looks and returned to the Exorcism Division.
“This is their private matter,” Xiang Xian said in the courtyard. “We should give them a chance to talk it out.”
In his life, Xiao Kun had attended court, subdued demons, killed people, beaten the Crown Prince, and even drawn his blade to threaten the Emperor, but he had never handled an elopement.
“What do you think we should do?” This was a blind spot in Xiao Kun’s knowledge, so he had to ask Xiang Xian’s opinion.
“Hmm…” Xiang Xian said. “The best way is, of course, to keep the Cyan Wolf around. With her and the White Deer here, these two can help us a lot, especially now when we’re short on manpower.”
Xiao Kun glanced into the hall. Chaosheng was sprawled at the table, stirring his noodles with chopsticks. Mu Qingshan ate his noodle soup. Hulü Guang knelt sitting, learning to brew tea from Wu Yingzong.
“Chaosheng, don’t play with your food,” Xiao Kun called into the hall. “Eat up and then have tea.”
“You have to resolve this eventually,” Xiang Xian said. “If we chase her away now, she’ll keep coming back relentlessly, no matter where we go. What would that look like? In my view, better to ease things between them, let the Cyan Wolf in first, and deal with the rest step by step.”
This convinced Xiao Kun. Upon closer thought, after first meeting the White Deer in Kunlun Mountain, it had agreed to join temporarily, probably to hide from the Cyan Wolf among the exorcists.
“Right, have her set aside the fiancé business for now,” Xiao Kun thought of a solution. “No need for extra trouble. Marriage can’t be rushed.”
Xiang Xian: “We’ll split up. I’ll coax Qingshan, you convince the Cyan Wolf. If you get her inside and the White Deer doesn’t run, we’re halfway there.”
“I don’t want to face that big sis.” Xiao Kun inwardly complained.
“Then you talk to the White Deer?” Xiang Xian said. “We can switch.”
“Forget it.” Xiao Kun realized convincing Mu Qingshan would be harder than the Cyan Wolf, who at least seemed more approachable by comparison.
So the two whispered for a moment. Xiao Kun nodded in understanding, took the relatively simpler task, and went out again.
“Did you two have a betrothal?” Xiang Xian returned to the main couch and sat down casually.
Mu Qingshan warily glanced toward the door.
Hulü Guang explained, “That was from when he was a kid.”
“No one’s asking you,” Wu Yingzong said. “Master is speaking. Don’t interrupt.”
Hulü Guang fell silent. Xiang Xian waved it off, indicating it was fine.
“What do you think yourself?” Xiang Xian asked.
“I don’t know.” Mu Qingshan said frankly.
He didn’t know? Xiang Xian got an unexpected answer. He had thought Mu Qingshan would firmly refuse, but it seemed there was still hope?
Chaosheng curiously asked, “Do you hate her a lot?”
Mu Qingshan: “Not hate, exactly. But just thinking about marrying her makes me uncomfortable. She’s too self-important. What are you getting at? If you’re set on convincing me to honor the betrothal, no need. I’ll leave and not cause you trouble.”
“Don’t!” Chaosheng hurriedly said.
Xiang Xian said, “Alright, let me be direct about what I think. First off, we’re friends, right?”
Mu Qingshan pondered. In Daming Palace, the exorcists had saved his life, and they had met again in Kunlun Mountain by fate. Calling them comrades-in-arms wasn’t wrong.
“Yes.” Mu Qingshan admitted straightforwardly.
“You’ve seen the state of the Exorcism Division,” Xiang Xian said. “We need everyone’s help. To purify the Heavenly Demon, just Xiao Kun and I fighting to the death won’t cut it.
“And your fiancée there? She’s not easy to shake off. If you don’t help me out, we’ll be too busy to always watch over you. Even if she chases you to the ends of the earth, she won’t give up.”
Mu Qingshan: “If I want to leave, she can’t catch me.”
Chaosheng said, “But that doesn’t solve the problem. Are we doing this forever?”
Xiang Xian: “For the Exorcism Division, one runs, one chases, you both bolt, and Xiao Kun and I get nothing out of it. One slip-up, and you’ll get caught and married. How about this? Your humble Master here will step up and settle it for you.”
As he spoke, Xiang Xian reached to unfasten the Wisdom Sword and added, “Later, when Xiao Kun tricks her in, everyone follow my lead and beat her to death with sticks.”
Mu Qingshan jumped in fright: “Don’t do that! She’s not bad at heart!”
“Oh?” Xiang Xian observed Mu Qingshan’s expression. Mu Qingshan had to say, “If she hadn’t saved me back then, I’d be dead by now.”
